thoughts that are deep but probably wrong:

saul goodman isn’t okay with people dying, he’s resigned to the idea that according to the people he loves most, he hurts people

and staring into howard’s dead eyes, he has deeply internalized this so why not suggest that badger should die? why not suggest hank go on a trip to belize?

but then people are legitimately put in danger or killed, and his eyes go big. brock getting poisoned was horrifying. mike’s disappearance gave him pause. the mass murder in the prison, when they killed dan wachsberger, is “where he draws the line”

saul goodman isn’t okay with people dying, he just thinks it’s going to be his fault anyway. “Jimmy, this is what you do. You hurt people over and over again…”

EN JANVIER 72, mon ami et client, Terence Young, le prestigieux metteur en scène de Mayerling. Soleil Rouge et des premiers James Bond m'appelle de Rome où il tourne Cosa Nostra avec Richard Bronson et Lino Ventura.

Il me charge d'organiser l'exposition des oeuvres de son amie californienne, Rodellle Karpman et d y convier tous nos amis. Elle se déroulera le 27 fevrier, Galerie de la Lumiere, rue de Medicis et sera suivie d'un diner pour une trentaine de convives,. Lui viendra de Rome avec ses deux stars.

Omar Sharif, toujours aussi séduisant, la sublîme Elga Andersen, partenaire de Steve Mc Queen dans " Le Mans ", Francis Lai, le talentueux compositeur de Love Story et d'Un Homme et une Femme, Sylvie Vartan et son frère Eddy, la pulpeuse Mylène Demongeot et son mari, le cinéaste Marc Simenon, Claudine Auger ex James Bond girl, François Chalais accueillent d'une salve d'applaudissements l'arrivee de Terence accompagné de Lino Ventura et de ...Madame Oufkir. Charles Bronson n'a pas fait le voyage.

Terence me demande de faire poser Rodelle avec les stars qui acceptent avec gentillesse. Il ne me manque que Ventura que je ne connais pas et qui, sans quitter son imper, s est isole au fond de la galerie. Je m'approche, souriante et lui demande si cela le dérange de poser avec l'artiste. " Oui, beaucoup " m'assène-t-il avec une brutalité qui me laisse sans voix. Quel mufle ! Ulcérée, j'avise Terence de son refus. Sa réponse " Ce n'est pas grave, Ventura est inconnu aux Etats Unis!" me met un peu de baume au coeur ..... Il est encore moins aimable quand, au dîner servi à l'Archestrate, j'essaie de savoir si il a apprécié les navets farçis au vinaigre et le gigôt de sept heures . Mon opinion est faite : ce mec est imbuvable !!!!

Mes diverses occupations et mon déménagement de la rue Camou à la rue François 1er me font vite oublier ces vexations.

En mars, je fais la connaissance de Jerry Lewis au Cirque d'Hiver. Il y tourne "Le Jour où le Clown Pleura " un film sur l'holocauste qui ne verra jamais le jour à cause des problèmes financiers du producteur Nathan Wachsberger .

Frédéric Rossif me présente Vangelis Papathanassiou, le leader d'Aphrodite Childs qui m'engage pour lui trouver un appartement et livrer bataille a Philips/Hollande, sa maison de disques qui, depuis un an, refuse de distribuer leur dernier album, 666 , sous prétexte que l'on y entend Irène Papas faire l'amour. Nous célèbrerons le premier anniversaire de sa non sortie !! Le retentissement de cet happening fut tel que le producteur américain ordonna la diffusion internationale de l'oeuvre qui fut un best seller.

Je présente mon amie Linda Thorson,la Tara King de " Chapeau Melon et Bottes de Cuir "à Charles Trenet qui, séduit par son entregent décide d'enregistrer un disque avec elle et le joaillier Gérard qui vient d'ouvrir son salon, avenue Montaigne, me confie ses relations publiques . Outre les magnifiques bijoux qu'il crée, il est le premier à proposer à la vente des diamants non montés sous le label "bourse du diamant".

Comme Elga Andersen et moi sommes invitées au Festival de Cannes qui ouvre le 4 mai avec "L Aventure c'est l'Aventure" de Claude Lelouch, je convaincs Mr Gérard de me confier ses plus belles parures que je ferai porter pour la montée des marches à Elga et a Simone Jurgens, la superbe épouse de Curd Jurgens chez qui nous descendons àVence.(cette idée sera reprise par tous les joailliers)

A notre arrivée, Simone m'informe que Terence a téléphoné de Rome. Il faut que je le rappelle de toute urgence.

En 1972, tout le monde, je crois, l'a oublié, les communications hors. de France passent par une opératrice et l'attente est souvent indéterminée. Nous partons pour le Festival sans que la connectio soit établie. Un souper au Carlton suit la projection. Lino, qui tourne toujours Cosa Nostra, y assiste accompagné de son épouse. Comme il est évident qu'il rejoindra le tournage le lendemain, Elga me suggère de lui confier un mot pour Terence Young demandant qu 'il me rappelle chez les Jurgens, les communications "entrantes" étant immédiates. Ses camouflets me reviennent en mémoire et c'est très mal a l'aise, que je m approche de lui quand il quitte la salle. Je lui explique brièvement mon problème, il saisit le feuillet sur lequel j'ai inscrit le téléphone des Jurgens et s'éclipse après avoir bougonné un très bref "d accord".

Le lendemain matin, au petit dejeuner, Simone m'annonce que Lino a appelé à l aube pour me communiquer le téléphone de Terence.!!!!! Les bras m'en tombent ! Je l'ai ce numéro ! Ce type est vraiment impossible ! Sa mauvaise volonté évidente m'écoeure ! C'est peut-être un grand acteur mais quel ours mal léché !

Comme Terence m'appelle un peu plus tard, j'en déduis qu'il a reçu mon message. A quoi rime alors cet appel matinal ?

Terence m'annonce que, dès la fin du tournage dejjho Cosa Nostra, il mettra en scène "Les Amazones". Il souhaite que je le rejoigne à Rome le plus tôt possible pour mettre le projet sur pied.

Rendez-vous est pris pour le dimanche à 16 heures avec un retour à Paris le lendemain. Elga m' accompagnera. Dès mon arrivée à l'hôtel, je joins Terence qui remet notre meeting à l'heure de l'apéritif à cause de la visite inopinée du veuf de Martine Carol, son ami Mike Eland puis, le diner se prolongeant, il décide que nous nous retrouverons le lendemain midi à la trattoria voisine du tournage, à 45 minutes de la ville Eternelle. Conduites par le banquier de Terence, nous y arrivons, à cause d'un problème d'essence, au moment où celui-ci, de forte méchante humeur, quitte le restaurant où il nous attend depuis plus de deux heures.! Plus de déjeuner ! Nous travaillerons entre les plans. Sur le tournage, j apercois soudain Lino assis sur une chaise adossée à un mur blanc inondé de soleil. Redevenu jovial, Terence lui donne l accolade, Elga lui serre la main. Je m approche avec une certaine appréhension, la gorge nouée. Ce type, j ignore pourquoi, me déstabilise Sans mot dire, avec un sourire tellement irrésistible qu'il me fait presque peur, il me tend la fleur jaune comme un soleil qu'il tient entre les doigts et que j'ai gardée précieusement

Stupefaite,je reste sans voix.

Dans le hangar transformé en prison, Terence me fait asseoir sur sa haute chaise de metteur en scène et, sous sa dictée, je note les modalités du concours qu'il veut organiser pour sélectionner les Amazones.

Appelé sur le plateau, il me bouscule en se retournant brusquement, mon stylo me tombe des mains, je descends les quatre marches de mon siège, le ramasse et sens soudain un regard posé sur moi.

Lino m'interpelle "Vous savez que quand vous vous baissez de la sorte on voit toute votre poitrine ?"

Je ne porte pas de soutien-gorge et me sens devenir écarlate.

Je réponds bêtement "Excusez-moi"

Sa réponse fuse "Ne vous excusez pas c' était très agréable aàregarder" suivi d'un "Que faites-vous ici ?"

Toujours persuadée qu'il ne sait pas qui je suis, je lui réponds "Je suis l'attachee de presse de Terence et.....

Il me coupe "Mais pourquoi êtes- vous ici" et ajoute "Ah c' est vous qui vous occupez de cette merde ! Et bien bravo ! " quand je lui confie mon implication dans la sélection des Amazones.

Puis, non sans ironie, il me propose de descendre de mon piedestal pour bavarder.

Cette premiere conversation est un interrogatoire.

"Depuis quand êtes-vous à Rome ?"

"Depuis hier "

"Combien de temps restez-vous ? "

"Nous repartons tout à l heure"

"Qui est nous ?"

"Elga et moi"

"Vous ne voulez pas rester a Rome ce soir et diner avec moi ?"

"Je vais consulter Elga"

Je transmets l'invitation à mon amie qui me rétorque que c'est trop compliqué car nous n'avons plus d'hôtel et des rendez-vous à Paris. Elle ajoute " Dis à Lino que nous serons ravies de diner avec lui a son retour " Je rapporte ses propos à Lino qui, surpris, me demande " C est toujours Elga qui décide ?"

Il m'avouera plus tard s'être alors posé des questions sur notre relation !!!

A l'heure sacrée du tea time, Terence m'entraîne dans son bureau pour finaliser le projet. Il est 17 heures. Elga appelle de la cour : il faut partir illico pour l'aéroport. Assise à l arrière de l'Alfa Romeo du banquier, elle me lance " Vas dire au revoir à Lino pour nous deux "

Je pénètre dans le hangar plongé dans l'obscurité et l'apercois assis dans une cellule sous la lumière crue des projecteurs. Je murmure " Monsieur Ventura, Elga et moi espérons vous revoir à Paris". Je rejoins la voiture qui démarre . Soudain Lino surgit du hangar, agrippe la portière et clame " Vous êtes folles les filles, vous allez rater ce vol ! Je vous paye des nèfles si vous arrivez à temps ! Téléphonez-moi au Hilton, nous dînerons ensemble

"yanou DOIT avoir cet avion ! " réplique Elga.

Après une course effrénée, nous arrivons à Fumicino et hors d'haleine grimpons à bord de l avion qui décolle aussitôt "

" Lino semble plus gentil avec toi ." dit soudain Elga...."Tu n'avais pas envie de rester au moins ? "

Complètement déboussolée, je réponds " Je ne sais que penser ma cherie....tout s'est passé si vite ...."

A Orly, alors que nous attendons nos bagages, Elga me propose d'appeler Lino pour lui annoncer qu il nous doit des nèfles. Il n'y a pas d'attente à cette heure tardive et l'opératrice me passe l'hôtel Hilton. Je demande Lino Ventura. Après une attente qui me semble durer une éternité, j'entends un ALLO essoufflé. Il me dit que les ascenseurs étant bloqués par les hordes de touristes déguisés en gladiateurs et en esclaves il vient de gravir dix étages au pas de course.

"Où êtes-vous ?" demande-t-il haletant

" Vous devez nous payer des nèfles, nous sommes à Orly !

"Merde ! Vous ne voulez pas revenir ?"

" Ce n'est pas possible, mais quand rentrez-vous àParis ?"

"Pourquoi ? Vous viendriez me chercher à l'aéroport ? "

" Avec plaisir si vous me prévenez "

" Mais je ne sais pas comment vous joindre ! . Donnez-moi votre téléphone ! Je ne vais quand même pas le demander à Terence ! "

Il fait nuit quand j'arrive à mon domicile et la sonnerie du téléphone me cueille à peine la porte ouverte. Je me précipite sur le combiné : c'est Lino ! Il veut s'assurer que je suis rentrée, qui m'a accueillie et pousse un soupir de soulagement quand je lui révèle que je vis seule....

Il m'appelle six fois cette nuit là et des dizaines de fois les jours suivants, à toutes les heures du jour et de la nuit. Il veut tout savoir : où j'habite, ce que je fais de mes journées, en quoi consiste mon métier, comment je suis habillée, où je déjeune, où je dine, avec qui et qui est qui ? Je ne vis plus que pour ces conversations qui deviennent de plus en plus tendres. Je ne m'etonne même pas de ce revirement . Je suis sur un nuage !

Trois semaines plus tard, le 30 mai, Lino m'annonce que son avion atterrit à Orly Sud le lendemain à 12 heures 30. Je l' attendrai à la sortie du contrôle de police.

Je ne dors pas beaucoup cette nuit là, à la fois excitée et angoissée. Comment va se passer ce premier tête-a-tête après ces longues conversations si romantiques ?

A 11 heures, ne tenant plus en place, je pars pour l 'aéroport. Trop fébrile sans doute, je casse la clé dans la serrure de la portière gauche de ma voiture et utilise donc le cote passager pour y pénétrer .
