The House of Representatives came to a decision to remove Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House, the first time such a procedure has happened in US History. The political instability within the US could possibly lead to the downfall of the Saudi-Israel deal that has been so important to international relations in the region. The Israeli government believes that enemies like Iran will take this opportunity to attack, due to the fact that there is dysfunction going on with the US government, and now would be an opportune time to sabotage the Saudi deal. Daniel Kurtzer, former US Ambassador to Israel said that he does not think McCarthy’s removal would impact a pending Saudi deal. The dysfunction of the United States internally in my opinion, will have an effect on the result of the Saudi-Israel deal. This is due to the internal polarization that Republicans on Capitol Hill will not allow for a win to happen within the Biden Administration. There is enough spite between the two parties that the McCarthy oust could cause the deal to fall flat.

Miller and Kurtzer revert to the notion that the United States must be “evenhanded” to play a role in the peace process, placing our democratic ally, Israel, on par with the anti-American, corrupt, terror-sponsoring autocrats from the Palestinian Authority. Again, that approach has a nearly eight-decade record of catastrophe.

Their assertion that Trump’s decision flouts international law is also wrong as I documented in my previous column. To briefly recap, one Carter administration official speciously concluded that settlements were illegal. Numerous legal scholars disputed this, as did Israel’s Supreme Court and President Reagan. John Kerry called them “illegitimate” and abstained but did not vote for the UN resolution labeling them illegal (which is irrelevant anyway since the UN gives political opinions not legal ones).

People like Miller and Kurtzer never admit that the policies they advocate, the same ones they pursued at the State Department, were disastrous. It kills them to see Trump finally place the onus for the absence of peace where it belongs — on the Palestinians. Instead of whitewashing Palestinian irredentism and terror, Trump is the first president to punish them for their destructive behavior. By recognizing Jerusalem and the Golan Heights, he has accepted the reality Miller and Kurtzer continue to deny, that Israel will not withdraw from either place. They still cling to the paradigm of two-states with a divided Jerusalem.

One thing Miller and Kurtzer are correct about is that the settlement decision appeals to the president’s base. That, however, does not make it wrong.

if the administration wants to increase the odds of stopping the current violence and preempting the next bloodletting, and if it wants to preserve the option of future negotiations over two states, it needs to do the following now:

• Nominate a U.S. ambassador to Israel pronto and appoint a senior representative with experience in politics and diplomacy to work the issue full time and to coordinate with the International Quartet (representatives from the U.N., EU and Russia, and the Arab Quartet (Jordan, Egypt, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates).

• Start an honest dialogue with Israel on the steps Israel must take even as the Gaza mini-war winds down: cancel home evictions of Palestinians in Shaikh Jarrah; stop demolishing houses, especially in Jerusalem; give Palestinians permits to build or add to their homes; control Israeli extremists and punish them when they break the law by provoking and assaulting Palestinians; stop expanding settlements in Jerusalem to preserve the idea of two capitals for two future states.

• Reopen a consulate general in Jerusalem, and appoint a consul general to intensify direct dialogue with the Palestinian Authority and demonstrate that the U.S. relationship with Palestinians is not derivative of U.S. relations with Israel.

• Press the Palestinian Authority to stop its authoritarian practices and human rights violations such as arbitrary arrests. Urge them to hold elections recently canceled by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas and to stop incentivizing and inciting violence.

Basically, the US has cut aid to Palestinians, including to key efforts which promote cross-cultural peaceful exchanges. The Trump / Kushner solution doesn’t address any historical contentions that have been hang-ups in previous peace attempts. It’s Orientalist in nature and even in some of the language Kushner has used. It wants to just throw money at a problem to address economic concerns that have already been identified and have been exacerbated by Israeli oppression and US cuts. And the $50 billion proposed isn’t funded and doesn’t all go to Palestine.

But don’t just take my liberal word for how bad this plan is. Listen to Daniel Kurtzer, former U.S. ambassador to Israel, under President George W. Bush (read: Republican / Conservative), who tweeted, “I would give this so-called plan a C- from an undergraduate student. The authors of the plan clearly understand nothing.”

Nothing will change until the core issues are addressed for Palestine (such as the continued stealing of West Bank land for illegal Israeli settlements) and Israel actually has an incentive to change the status quo, which it currently doesn’t have because it enjoys all of the power, control, and economic benefits.

Những chuyến bay bí mật hàng chục năm

Ai CậpRất nhiều năm sau đó, Micheal Paley, người Mỹ, vẫn nhớ tới cảm giác kỳ lạ khi ông lên chuyến bay từ Cairo tới Tel Aviv.

Năm 2007, Michael Paley tới Cairo thăm con gái Naamah, sinh viên đại học Michigan, Mỹ và đang ở Ai Cập học tiếng Arab. Vài tuần sau đó, Paley có chuyến đi tới Israel. Vì vậy, ông nhờ người đặt vé bay thẳng từ thủ đô Cairo, nơi vừa tới thăm con gái, tới Tel Aviv. Trong trí tưởng của nam hành khách Mỹ, đó là chuyến bay dài 50 phút vào một ngày đẹp trời.

Cảm giác lúc này với Paley là mình đang đi đâu đó phi pháp. Rất nhiều năm sau này, ông vẫn giữ nguyên cảm giác kỳ lạ về chuyến bay tới Tel Aviv năm đó. 

Chiếc phi cơ không thương hiệu, không logo nhưng Paley từng lên thuộc về hãng Air Sinai và chỉ bay chặng Cairo – Tel Aviv.

Năm 1979, Israel và Ai Cập đã ký hiệp ước hòa bình lịch sử, dưới sự giám sát của Mỹ. Điều này giúp Ai Cập trở thành quốc gia Arab trước tiên xác nhận quốc gia Israel. Air Sinai, được xây dựng năm 1982 mang theo nhiệm vụ hoàn thành một pháp luật trong hiệp ước ký năm 1979 đó. Và pháp luật này phải được thực hiện trong vòng 3 năm kể từ khi ký kết: nhị nước phải duy trì các chuyến bay thương nghiệp. vì thế, trong suốt nhiều năm sau, Air Sinai luôn thực hiện các chuyến bay thẳng nối nhị TP Cairo – Tel Aviv. Trên thực tế, khoảng cách giữa nhị TP này chỉ gần 400 km.

Sau hiệp ước này, nhiều nước Arab đã “tẩy chay” Ai Cập, Daniel Kurtzer, Đại sứ Mỹ tại Ai Cập từ năm 1979 tới 1982 nói. Ông cũng cho biết, sự thù địch, phản đối Israel từ trong nước khiến Ai Cập không muốn chuyến bay Cairo – Tel Aviv công khai. Đó là lý do Air Sinai ra đời. Air Sinai đã sử dụng phi công, phi cơ và tiếp viên của hãng EgyptAir. Các chuyến bay diễn ra lặng lẽ, và không ai biết. Mọi hoạt động chỉ thực hiện trên giấy. Việc bay những chuyến bay màu trắng không thương hiệu, không logo trên bầu trời sẽ giúp cho Air Sinai thêm phần kín đáo, kín.

nhường nhịn như, sự tồn tại của Air Sinai cũng ít người biết. Trong phần lớn lịch sử hình thành của hãng, bất kỳ hành khách tìm kiếm vé bay thẳng Cairo – Tel Aviv sẽ tìm thấy rất nhiều sự lựa chọn, với nhiều hãng bay khác nhau. Nhưng phần lớn là các chuyến bay nối chuyến, dừng tại thủ đô Amman, Jordan hay Istanbul, Thổ Nhĩ Kỳ.

Ngoài ra, hành khách cũng có thể tìm thấy một vài thông tin hiếm hoi về chặng bay thẳng. Và thông thường, khi muốn đặt vé quý khách sẽ phải liên hệ trực tiếp với hãng hoặc đại lý du lịch. Và du khách chỉ có thể tìm được địa chỉ này qua… truyền mồm. Lý do Air Sinai không có trang web, không có lộ trình chuyến bay công khai và không có cơ chế đặt vé trực tuyến hay số hotline để liên lạc. Dù trên thực tế, hãng trở thành đơn vị con của EgyptAir từ năm 2002, nhưng không được công khai để nhiều người biết tới rộng rãi.

Điều không giống nhau nữa là Air Sinai chỉ lấy tiền mặt, và thường là USD. Trong nhiều năm, trước khi Air Sinai chấp nhận đặt vé qua email và chuyển khoản nhà băng, hành khách sẽ phải tới văn phòng của hãng tại Tel Aviv với phong so bì tiền mặt bên trong. Cuối năm 2010, vé phi cơ của hãng này trông vẫn khá cổ điển.

Gần đây, hành khách mở đầu nhận được các email gửi thông tin chuyến bay của hãng. Thẻ tín dụng vẫn không được chấp nhận và tiền mặt là ưu tiên số một. Một du khách Mỹ gần đây khi muốn hủy chuyến bay đã phải tìm một người quý khách có tài khoản nhà băng ở Israel để hãng hoàn trả tiền vào đó. Nhiều người miêu tả về trải nghiệm đặt vé phi cơ chặng này của hãng là một sự kỳ lạ. Nó gợi nhớ tới kỷ nguyên của việc mua bán vé phi cơ trước khi có giao tiếp trực tuyến. 

Một nam hành khách bay vào tháng 6/2019 nhớ lại việc đã nhận cuộc gọi từ một người phụ nữ về việc chuyến bay bị lùi một ngày. Đây là viên chức anh đã liên lạc qua email để đặt chuyến bay. Lý do là nhóm khách hành hương người Nam Phi đã bao trọn chuyến.

tới năm 2014, EgyptAir chính thức bỏ Israel khỏi quý khách dạng đồ bay trong thời kì chiến tranh lần nhị trên dải Gaza. Đây cũng là năm nhưng sân bay quốc tế Cairo và sân bay quốc tế Ben Gurion ở Tel Aviv mở đầu cho hiển thị các chuyến bay của Air Sinai trên bảng tin điện tử tại các nhà ga.

Tháng 2/2020, trang web flyairsinai.com xuất hiện, bất kỳ ai cũng có thể đặt chuyến bay của hãng này nhưng không cần gửi mail như trước. Hành khách cũng được sử dụng thẻ tín dụng để tính sổ khi mua vé.

Ngày nay, Air Sinai vẫn tiếp tục phục vụ các doanh nhân, khách du lịch, khách hành hương kito giáo và du khách đi khắp Trung Đông. Sự xuất hiện trực tuyến của hãng nhằm thu hút sự quan tâm nhiều hơn của hành khách và không còn bị cản trở nhiều về các mối quan ngại bình an. ngày nay, du lịch Israel vẫn chưa lấy được “tư thế” như những năm 1980 hay 1990, sự tồn tại của Air Sinai vẫn nhập vai trò như một lời nhắc nhở rằng nhị quốc gia này vẫn có sự liên kết, và nó vẫn hoạt động.
