D’entrée de jeu, il rappelle l’impérialisme sournois de la langue « du dehors » contre lequel il s’est toujours insurgé. La voix virevolte sur le rythme ternaire mené par le cœur battant du tambour roulèr et le roulis saccadé des graines du kayamb, ces percussions fondamentales du maloya, emblème musical et poétique de la créolité réunionnaise. Le chanteur ouvre le sens des mots à ceux qui n’ont pas le créole dans leur vie, avec les traductions et un lexique dans le livret. Sa poésie raconte des histoires, parle tendresse et spiritualité, égrène des hommages (notamment à toutes les « monmon »). A sa voix répondent les polyphonies rayonnantes de ses musiciens. Son fils Sami Pageaux-Waro et sa femme, Florans Féliks-Waro apportent leurs couleurs, lui aux instruments, elle à la voix. Et puis, il a invité Jean-Claude Acquaviva, l’ami du groupe de polyphonies corses A Filetta qui avait participé à l’album précédent Aou Amwin (Grand Prix de l’Académie Charles Cros). Monmon paraît juste après la réédition par Ocora Radio France d’un album de Firmin Viry (Maloya), celui qui a donné le goût du maloya à Danyel Waro.
