[…] Perhaps the essence of liberal outlook could be summed up in a new decalogue, not intended to replace the old one but only to supplement it. The Ten Commandments that, as a teacher, I should wish to promulgate, might be set forth as follows:

(1) Do not feel absolutely certain of anything.

(2) Do not think it worth while to produce belief by concealing evidence, for the evidence is sure to come to light.

(3) Never try to discourage thinking, for you are sure to succeed.

(4) When you meet with opposition, even if it should be from your husband or your children, endeavour to overcome it by argument and not by authority, for a victory dependent upon authority is unreal and illusory.

(5) Have no respect for the authority of others, for there are always contrary authorities to be found.

(6) Do not use power to suppress opinions you think pernicious, for if you do the opinions will suppress you.

(7) Do not fear to be eccentric in opinion, for every opinion now accepted was once eccentric.

(8) Find more pleasure in intelligent dissent that in passive agreement, for, if you value intelligence as you should, the former implies a deeper agreement than the latter.

(9) Be scrupulously truthful, even when truth is inconvenient, for it is more inconvenient when you try to conceal it.

(10) Do not feel envious of the happiness of those who live in a fool’s paradise, for only a fool will think that it is happiness.

[HIS] […] Los diez mandamientos que, como profesor, desearía promulgar, podrían ser enunciados como sigue: (1) No te sientas absolutamente cierto (seguro) de nada. (2) No creas que vale la pena producir creencias ocultando evidencias, pues es seguro que las evidencias saldrán a la luz. (3) Nunca intentes oponerte al pensamiento, pues es seguro que lo conseguirás. (4) Cuando te encuentres con oposición, incluso si es de tu esposa o tus hijos, trata de superarla con argumentos y no por autoridad, pues una victoria que depende de la autoridad es irreal e ilusoria. (5) No tengas respeto por la autoridad de otros, pues siempre pueden encontrase autoridades contrarias. (6) No uses el poder para suprimir las opiniones que creas perniciosas, pues si lo haces las opiniones te suprimirán a ti. (7) No tengas miedo a ser de opinión excéntrica, pues todas las opiniones ahora aceptadas fueron una vez excéntricas. (8) Encuentra mayor placer en el disenso inteligente que en el asenso pasivo, pues si valoras la inteligencia como deberías, el primero implica un acuerdo más profundo que el segundo. (9) Se escrupulosamente verdadero , incluso cuando la verdad sea inconveniente, pues es más inconveniente que intentes anularla. (10) No sientas envidia de la felicidad de quienes viven en el paraíso los necios, pues sólo un necio piensa que eso es la felicidad.
