Turning Defeat into Victory
Turning Defeat into Ultimate Victory by Paul J. Hannig, Ph.D. MFT
Hillary Clinton posted a poignant and powerful "Thank You" letter to the American people on her web site post election. Below is an excerpt that examples her ability to turn "Defeat into Ultimate Victory". With this excerpt, I will teach you how to transform any situation from defeat to victory.
”Last night, I congratulated Donald Trump and offered to work with him on behalf of our country. I hope that he will be a successful president for all Americans.
This is not the outcome we wanted or we worked so hard for, and I’m sorry we did not win this election for the values we share and the vision we hold for our country.
But I feel pride and gratitude for this wonderful campaign that we built together—this vast, diverse, creative, unruly, energized campaign. You represent the best of America, and being your candidate has been one of the greatest honors of my life.
I know how disappointed you feel, because I feel it too. And so do tens of millions of Americans who invested their hopes and dreams in this effort. This is painful, and it will be for a long time. But I want you to remember this: Our campaign was never about one person or even one election. It was about the country we love—and about building an America that’s hopeful, inclusive, and big-hearted.
We have seen that our nation is more deeply divided than we thought. But I still believe in America—and I always will. And if you do, too, then we must accept this result—and then look to the future."
Then she added later...
"We’ve spent a year and a half bringing together millions of people from every corner of our country to say with one voice that we believe that the American Dream is big enough for everyone—for people of all races and religions, for men and women, for immigrants, for LGBT people, and people with disabilities.
Our responsibility as citizens is to keep doing our part to build that better, stronger, fairer America we seek. And I know you will."
"I am so grateful to stand with all of you"

The Challenge: Drawing Strength from Defeat
She took her defeat and turned it into strength. She was victorious in her stance and presentation at her most difficult time. How did she do it?
In order to do this, Hillary had to go deep into her heart and soul. She had to ruminate with her pain, wrestle with her feelings, and decide what would be best for her and her country. She chose to transform defeat and loss into an act far greater than we imaged: a Thank You letter from her heart to the hearts of America. When we "were low, she went high" ...
The Process of Transformation
I've taught transformation. I've taught going deep, then going high. I've been down and I've rose up. I've modeled it, lived it and expounded it to thousands of clients over the years. Deep insight and transformation is a process and I feel it's important to share that with you at this time. Perhaps, it will help you with your pain tonight.
Transformation 1: Pain and defeat can ultimately lead to something much higher and more extraordinary. When Hillary Clinton lost the election, there were many people who went into shock. Hillary tumbled down into deep pain. I said "Absolutely No"  I knew she would rise up. Her leadership showed us that she had the capacity to turn defeat into a powerful message. I understood that her defeat and her loss would eventually lead to something exponentially far greater and more magnificent than imagined.
Transformation 2: Feel the Pain. Phone calls were pouring into my therapy line after the election. People were dismayed, confused, worried and hurt. They were faced with the unimaginable and the prospect of a very dangerous and questionable future. Once again I said, "No." I know that Hillary Clinton, just like many others, will go deep into that pain and eventually rise up to something that will be more magical and transformative than anything she or anyone else could ever conceive. I believe that this loss is an opportunity for her and the people who shared her defeat and her pain, to eventually discover something in their lives ... something that would lead to a whole new world.
Transformation 3: Feel Low. Shoot for the High:
By going deep into one's pain, and that includes Hillary and her supporters, there is a door that leads to transmigration, transformation and entrance into those cosmic realities which signify that lives will be greatly changed because of disaster and defeat. By allowing oneself to feel the pain and the hurt, one opens a whole new arena of insight, courage, fortitude and a deep desire to move forward and transcend all obstacles.
Transformation 4: Fear is the First Defense.
When the reality hit many people that Hillary Clinton was going down, I encouraged everyone to look at a whole other side of what seemed to be a loss. I encouraged everyone to see that this defeat and this loss was really a prelude and an opening to a far greater victory and a deep shift to something far more remarkable and better for everyone.
I am not postulating Positive Psychology This is an example of what seems to appear as defeat and loss, is really an explosive opening to a whole other phase and stage of life victories. There is the old adage, "There is no gain, without pain." Open the third eye and you will see deeply and thoroughly into the ultimate reality that awaits beyond the door of defeat, loss and pain. Agony for some becomes the doorway to ecstasy.
Transformation 5: There are many different levels of reality. Each level represents a stage and a possible doorway to something different and higher. What seems real in one circumstance is really an illusion and a veil to something far more real just outside the corner of the mind.
What seems obvious on the surface is just the mere beginning of a way of seeing something far deeper and more significant. You can't get to the high road unless you feel and learn what exists on the low road. Hillary said it in her campaign, "When they go low, we go high". There are all types of visions and at any moment, your vision can lead to a whole different kind of insight, based on some hindsight and maybe a little oversight. Teaching my clients how to go from despair and pain, opens the door to the high ground. Where would we be if we did not have the low ground to show us a path to the High Way?
The Powerful Significance of Transformation
Here's what's significant: These five transformations aren't a bunch of hocus-pocus. They are absolute realities. When you make the decision to go deep inside whatever is bothering or bugging you, you turn the key, unlock the door and allow your real self and your real feelings to cleanse and purify your heart and soul. There is a music, particular to you, that opens you up and provides an aura of security around you, that with practice and determination reveals a whole new cure to the aches and pains of the world. You are your own world.
