“Take the initiative. Brave the ice,” Carl’s words echo in Buck's head.

Apparently, giving Tommy space is not working anymore. That’s why Buck goes to Tommy’s house the following day and rings the bell.

No one answers.

Buck knocks on the door.

No one answers.

Then Buck yells Tommy into the house.

No one answers.

Buck peeks into the kitchen window.

It’s as dark as the abyss.

Buck recognizes Tommy’s work schedule like the back of his hand. Pilots need a regular timetable, as fatigue is the most dangerous killer in aviation. Tommy should be off today, since his team was on duty the previous day.

Maybe Tommy’s just outside, working on his numerous hobbies, or meeting up with his cool, sexy friends.

But no, the mailbox outside of the pilot’s house is stuffed full of letters, probably due to the small parcel filling up the space. Tommy never leaves his mailbox unchecked.

Is Tommy changing up his work schedule just to avoid running into Buck at work?

There’s only one way to find out.

Buck never thought he would find himself staying low in his Jeep, outside of Harbor Station, like a creep.

Yet, the image of Tommy struggling refuses to leave his mind. He has to find out how his ex is doing. The safety of Los Angeles hangs in the hand of this masterful pilot.

So, Buck walks into the 217 station, hoping no one he knows recognizes him.

“Hi,” a seemingly young brunette in a flight suit greets Buck, “can I help you?”

“Um… yeah, I��m looking for Tommy. Is he working today?” Buck asks.

“Uh… I’m sorry, I’m new here. I don’t know everyone yet. Do you have a last name?”

“Yeah, it’s Kinard. K-I-N-A-R-D.”

“Um… It doesn’t really ring a bell…” the young woman walks towards a screen, “I can look at the roster for you.”

“Thanks,” Buck replies, “it’s Tommy, or Thomas, Kinard.”

“Hmm, are you a firefighter too?” the young woman points at Buck’s LAFD hoodie.

“Yeah, I work at the 118. Tommy is a… colleague,” Buck tries his best to sound normal. “I’m Buck, by the way, what’s your name?”

“I’m Rachel.”

Then her expression sombers.

“Um… are you sure he’s still working here?” she furrows her eyebrows. “I don’t see any Kinard on the roster this month… or next month. Maybe he transferred?”

“But — but there’s only one Air Ops in the LAFD,” anxiety hits Buck once again, only double the impact this time. Tommy’s absence is not an accident, it’s planned.

“Look, I’m gonna ask around for you. I’m sure there are people more in the know than I am,” Rachel realizes Buck’s desperation.

“No, it’s… fine,” Buck’s face pales, “I need to… go…”

Buck returns to his car and looks up Tommy on Instagram, something he’s been avoiding since Tommy dumped him. He doesn’t want to see his ex having fun, living his best life with a new man.

It soothes Buck’s heart a little, that Tommy’s Instagram page is still filled with photos and videos of aircrafts, his greatest passion.

"A new beginning. Did he really transfer? Just to avoid me?" Buck thinks to himself.

Then Buck realizes, he can browse Tommy's tagged photos to figure out where he is.

Jealousy floods Buck's head for a second, before he realizes Ashley is a woman. She would've been Buck's type in other circumstances, but at the moment, all Buck cares about is if Tommy has a new boyfriend.

It's a girl, so no new boyfriend yet. He looks good though, better than a recently single man would've looked.

Buck finally registers the geotag staring right at him.

This fic is inspired by the yellow helicopter (N211FN) in 7x03 and the black helicopter (N67TV) Tommy took Eddie to Vegas in 7x04.

They're both in Vancouver now, in a AS350 specialized shop, and their ownerships have been transferred to an aircraft trust in Delaware.

This combination usually means someone else is buying those helicopters. They're not making their way back to their original operators.

Rewarding CEOs for failure

You could not ask for a better example of the meritocratic fallacy than the treatment of CEOs of bankrupt companies. This FT article documents the multimillion-dollar "retention bonuses" paid to execs who drove their companies into bankruptcy.

And even more pointedly, Naked Capitalism's Yves Smith marks up the article to point out just how ludicrous and indefensible these payouts are.

The theory behind the bonuses is that the companies are already facing traumatic disruption as they restructure in bankruptcy, zeroing out worker pensions, destroying key suppliers by stiffing them on their bills, etc.

With all that going on, keeping the CEO on is vital to preserve continuity during difficult times.

But those difficult times are the fault of the CEO.

And before you think, "Wait, you can't blame it all on one exec," recall that if the company had thrived, all CREDIT would have accrued to the same empty suit.

Smith: "Are we to believe that the stipends these boards approve has any relationship with the market value of these CEOs, even charitably assuming someone would hire them after their companies collapses underneath them? Are we to believe there was no able lieutenant worth a battlefield promotion? No retired industry greybeard who could be engaged for an eighteen month to three year gig? No one in the ranks of turnaround expert or 'temp for hire' CEOs who would do?"

And the closer you look, the worse it gets. Brad Holly, CEO of Whiting Petroleum, signed on in Nov 2017. In April, Whiting filed for bankruptcy. Days before, the board approved a $6.4m pay package for Holly. Holly chairs the board.

Holly has announced that he will quit after the Chapter 11 restructure is done. When he does, the board will pay him another $2.53m. As Smith says: "$6.4 million for Holly for at most five months of babysitting bankruptcy lawyers? Seriously?"

Whiting's board showered millions on its execs moments before its bankruptcy: $14m looted and disbursed just before they announced that they were broke.

It's the same all over. Briggs and Stratton - engine part makers - gave its CEO $1m to stick around through the bankruptcy, part of a $5m exec payout, FOUR DAYS before it stiffed its bond holders on $6.7m in interest.

Smith: "Why are these losers who have nowhere to go being paid in advance? Why aren’t they instead getting $1 per year and working for a contingent payout to be paid when the company emerged from bankruptcy, say tiered based upon results versus specified targets?"

As Smith points out, the whole thing reeks of "fraudulent conveyance," but business-friendly courts, especially those in Delaware (where these companies maintain fictional HQs in the form of rented mailboxes) are unwilling to call it for what it is.

Smith puts a button on it: "It's clear the top echelon realizes it may well be on the receiving end of violence, hence the boom in panic rooms. It’s not clear how much further this can go, given how many Americans own guns. Sadly, we may be on track to finding out."

Legends Reborn Chapter 3

Chapter 3: Attack of the Quirk Monger

(Disclaimer! I own nothing of My Hero Academia!)

Someone was flying around the city in some kind of armor. 

Energy was charging in his body and he fired some kind of shockwaves at a building. 

“What the hell was that?” Deku asked.

There was debris falling down.

“Uraraka, look out!” Deku said. 

He did a Delaware smash knocking it away from her.

The two of them begun to run.

The stranger was following them. 

“Those two look like fun.”

He flew down knocking Deku away.

Deku opened his eyes to see people running.

Deku was face to face with the mysterious figure.

He lunged at Deku and he did an uppercut following with a kick landing him on the ground.

“Just who do you think you are?” Deku asked.

“Who am I? You’re joking right?” He asked, “I’ve been all over the news, I’m the guy who’s been stealing various quirks. And what’s more? I have a photogenic memory, meaning I can anticipate what move you’re gonna make.”

Deku came at him with a rising uppercut, and the mysterious man countered.

He then did come combo attacks hoping to catch the mysterious man off guard.

Nothing he did even dented him.

“You realize that doesn’t work anymore,” he said, “For a hero you sure don’t know what you’re doing do you?”

“Who are you?” Deku asked again.

“I am known by many names, but you can call me…. The Quirk Monger.”

He used a quirk that was similar to All Might’s mentor moving at breakneck speeds.

He then lunged at Deku knocking him out of the way. 

Quirk Monger looked at Uraraka.

“Hello my dear,” he said.

Uraraka touched a part of a building and used it to knock him away.

Quirk Monger analyzed the move.

“Looks like your quirk might come in handy,” he said.

He grabbed her arm and looked at her straight in the eye.

Deku saw Uraraka being threatened.

His body started to glow pink and he copied her quirk.

“You know, the only crime you’ve committed is not going on a…..”

Deku did the Detroit smash knocking him away.

“Get away from her,” he said.

He went to help Uraraka up.

“Are you ok?” Deku asked.

“I’m fine, thanks to you,” Uraraka said.

“Well, I didn’t realize you actually cared for this young lady,” Quirk Monger said.

“What’s your scheme?” Uraraka asked, “Why are you stealing our quirks.”

“I wouldn’t call it stealing, seeing you can still use yours,” he answered, “But sooner or later you’ll eventually find out. I’ve no time to chat. Farewell!”

Using another quirk, he teleported away.

The others met up with Deku and Uraraka. 

“Is everyone alright?” Aizawa asked.

“We’re fine,” said Deku.

“Who was that?” Uraraka asked.

“I don’t know,” Deku said, “But whoever he is, we’ll have to fight him eventually.”

Deku and company were resting up in the hotel after the events that happened earlier.

There was a news broadcast about the Quirk Monger.

“I still can’t believe I even held my own using those techniques,” Deku said, “Usually I end up injuring myself.”

He then had an idea for his costume. 

“This is it!” He said, “The last piece.”

He wrote down the list detail. 

“Alright. Now to send it to the costume designers back in U.A.”

He posted it in a mailbox.

Aizawa was watching him. 

“Well, you’ve certainly trained the boy well,” he said to All Might.

Uraraka was watching Deku training his butt off.

She smiled knowing that she would tell Deku of her feeling real soon.

Meanwhile Kirishima was talking with Mina about how cool Beta was. 

“…and we already got a cool name for him; Plasma Ninja,” Kirishima said, “Man that guy will certainly have his way with the ladies.”

“You do too,” Mina said, “You’re hard as nails, you’re supportive, and on top of that you’re funny.”

Kirishima was blushing, but it wasn’t noticeable. 

“Well I do have one problem,” Kirishima said, “It seems like I don’t get the whole thing with moving while attacking.”

Mina stopped.

“You’re kidding right?” Mina said, “Almost everyone I know moves around in combat.”

“Well except for me obviously,” Kirishima said laughing, “But….. maybe you could give me some one on one practice when we get to the next city.”

Mina turned around.

“Are you asking me out on a date?”

“Well….. if you wanna use that term, yeah.”

She smiled. How could she not, cause its obvious she likes him.

“Then yes.” 

The next day everyone was on the bus heading to the next city on their list.

Mina approached Uraraka.

“Sooooooo, how’s the plan going?”

“Well….. a few setbacks for sure, but I think everything is going smooth,” Uraraka said.

“Did you tell him yet?”

Uraraka sighed.

“No,” she said, “I don’t know what to say.”

“Come on Uraraka, all you have to do is tell him how you feel,” Mina said, “Its not that hard.”

“I’m just scared he won’t see me as anything more than a plain girl,” Uraraka said, “He seems much more attracted to other girls such as All Might’s niece.”

“Stop your worrying,” Mina said, “You’re a great match for Deku. After all, who’s his biggest supporter?”

“I am,” Uraraka answered.

“And who gave Deku his new cool hero name back in Season 2?”

“I did.”

“And who inspires Deku to keep going even when the going gets tough on a regular basis?”

“….I do.”

“And those things alone are more than enough to get Deku’s attention, cause you’re the best girl around him,” Mina said, “There ain’t no one who would make a more suitable girlfriend for Deku than you.”

“Ok.”

“Now say it.”

“There isn’t anybody….”

“Ain’t no one!” Mina corrected.

“Ain’t no one who would make a more suitable girlfriend for Deku than me.”

“Good,” Mina said.

“Well…. What about you and Kirishima?”

She winked.

“Um….. I don’t know what you’re talking about.” 

Asui and the others were grinning. 

“No,” Mina said. 

Meanwhile the guys were teasing Kirishima and his ‘crush’ on Mina.

“What are you guys talking about?” Kirishima asked.

“Its obvious you got the hots for her!” Bakugo said.

“Will you keep your fucking voice down?!”

Aizawa was trying to take his nap.

“Kids.”

Everyone got settles in the hotel in New Albany. 

Bakugo was showing off in front of his new girlfriend who didn’t seem to mind, while Deku was training.

Beta was training in the woods.

Todoroki approached Deku. 

“Hey, I think we need to have a talk,” he said.

Deku stopped.

“Your last fight against the Quirk Monger,” Todoroki said, “I witnessed it, and I have some things I wanna see for myself.”

Todoroki then got in a fighting stance.

“Come at me,” he said, “I wanna see how strong you’ve gotten.”

Doordash's breach is different

One important detail from this week's admission from Doordash that they'd suffered (and remained silent about) a breach of 4.9 million records: Doordash, by its nature, includes the home addresses of people who otherwise avoid disclosing where they live.

People at risk from doxing, swatting, stalking, and other forms of privacy invasion take great pains to keep their home addresses secret, such as renting private mailboxes and having all correspondence and deliveries sent to those addresses. Some people even register anonymous Nevada or Delaware LLCs and buy their houses through those companies, just to keep their names out of title registries.

However, there are some services that need to associate your name with your home address. It's hard to send your kid to a public school without allowing the school district to store your home address associated with your name (and school districts regularly suffer breaches). Credit bureaux are likewise impossible to keep your home address away from (o hai, Equifax).

Then there's Doordash. No one gets dinner delivered to a Mailboxes, Etc and picks it up from there. Doordash's breach blows up the physsec and opsec for a nation of at-risk people. Doordash isn't just a run-of-the-mill breach: it's a catastrophe for some of the most vulnerable people in America.

Here's a pro-tip: you can set up a Google Alert for your name and home address, which will notify you any time a data-broker puts that information up for sale on the public markets (of course, if Google Alerts is ever breached, you're screwed).
