In February 2017, GoTo Meeting became a product of LogMeIn as a result of a merger between LogMeIn and Citrix’s GoTo business. The later release of GoTo Webinar in 2006 and GoToTraining in 2010 expanded GoToMeeting capabilities to accommodate larger audiences. GoTo Meeting was developed in July 2004 using the remote access and screen sharing technology from GoToMyPC and GoToAssist to allow web conferencing. By combining a web-hosted subscription service with software installed on the host computer, transmissions can be passed through highly restrictive firewalls. Transmissions are protected with high-security encryption and optional passwords. GoTo Meeting is designed to broadcast the desktop view of a host computer to a group of computers connected to the host through the Internet. In July 2016, Citrix and LogMeIn announced plans to merge the GoTo family of products. In late 2015, Citrix announced plans to spin off the GoToMeeting business as a standalone subsidiary with a market value around $4 billion. It is an online meeting, desktop sharing, and video conferencing software package that enables the user to meet with other computer users, customers, clients or colleagues via the Internet in real time. GoTo Meeting (formerly GoToMeeting) is a web conferencing software by GoTo. Trump’s Orders on Coronavirus Relief Create Confusion (NYT) President Trump’s attempt to circumvent Congress to provide coronavirus relief in the absence of a broad agreement resulted in confusion and uncertainty on Sunday for tens of millions of unemployed Americans and countless businesses seeking aid after critical benefits lapsed. As negotiations with congressional Democrats remained at an impasse, administration officials were on the defensive a day after the president’s legally questionable executive actions, at times contradicting one another as they sought to explain how the measures would work and how quickly Americans could see any form of relief. In a series of television appearances on Sunday, they insisted that Americans would receive the aid promised by Mr. Trump, including a $400 weekly supplement to unemployment checks. But that funding will be contingent on agreement from state officials, who are already struggling amid budget shortfalls caused by the economic crisis, and the siphoning of aid from a federal fund for disaster relief in the middle of what is expected to be an active hurricane season. Because Congress has the constitutional authority to allocate federal spending, Mr. Trump—who has frequently turned to unilateral action, as opposed to wrangling through tough negotiations—is likely to need congressional agreement, and legislation, to deliver additional financial relief to American families and businesses.
US divisions (Thomas Friedman, NYT) The United States is becoming like Lebanon and other Middle East countries in two respects. First, our political differences are becoming so deep that our two parties now resemble religious sects in a zero-sum contest for power. They call theirs “Shiites and Sunnis and Maronites” or “Israelis and Palestinians.” We call ours “Democrats and Republicans,” but ours now behave just like rival tribes who believe they must rule or die. And second, as in the Middle East, so increasingly in America: Everything is now politics—even the climate, even energy, even face masks in a pandemic.
Looters descend on downtown Chicago; more than 100 arrested (AP) Hundreds of looters descended on downtown Chicago early Monday following a police shooting on the city’s South Side, with vandals smashing the windows of dozens of businesses and making off with merchandise, cash machines and anything else they could carry, police said. When police shot a man after he opened fire on officers Sunday afternoon, the incident apparently prompted a social media post hours later urging looters to converge on the business district, Police Superintendent David Brown told a news conference. Some 400 additional officers were dispatched to the area after the department spotted the post. Over the next several hours, police made more than 100 arrests and 13 officers were injured, including one who was struck in the head with a bottle. Brown dismissed any suggestion that the chaos was part of an organized protest of the shooting, instead calling it “pure criminality” that included occupants of a vehicle opening fire on police who were arresting a man they spotted carrying a cash register.
Trump weighs blocking U.S. citizens coming home if coronavirus infection feared (Reuters) The administration of U.S. President Donald Trump is considering a measure to block U.S. citizens and permanent residents from returning home if they are suspected of being infected with the new coronavirus, a senior U.S. official confirmed to Reuters. The official said a draft regulation, which has not been finalized and could change, would give the government authorization to block individuals who could “reasonably” be believed to have contracted COVID-19 or other diseases. Trump has instituted a series of sweeping immigration restrictions since the start of the coronavirus pandemic, suspending some legal immigration and allowing U.S. border authorities to rapidly deport migrants caught at the border without standard legal processes. Reuters reported in May that U.S. government officials were concerned that dual U.S.-Mexico citizens might flee to the United States if the coronavirus outbreak in Mexico worsened, putting more stress on U.S. hospitals.
‘I’d Rather Stay Home and Die’ (NYT) Mexico is battling one of the worst coronavirus outbreaks in the world, with more than 52,000 confirmed deaths, the third-highest toll of the pandemic. And its struggle has been made even harder by a pervasive phenomenon: a deeply rooted fear of hospitals. As the pandemic crushes an already weak health care system, with bodies piling up in  refrigerated trucks, many Mexicans see the Covid ward as a place where only death awaits—to be avoided at all cost. The consequences, doctors, nurses and health ministers say, are severe. Mexicans are waiting to seek medical care until their cases are so bad that doctors can do little to help them. Thousands are dying before ever seeing the inside of a hospital, government data show, succumbing to the virus in taxis on the way there or in sickbeds at home. Many Mexicans say they have good reason to be wary of hospitals: Nearly 40 percent of people hospitalized with confirmed cases of the virus in Mexico City, the epicenter of the nation’s outbreak, end up dying, government data show, a high mortality rate even when compared with some of the worst coronavirus hot spots worldwide. During the peak of the pandemic in New York City, less than 25 percent of coronavirus patients died in hospitals, studies have estimated. While the statistic may be imprecise because of limited testing, doctors and researchers confirmed that a startling number of people are dying in Mexico’s hospitals.
Innovative Mexican tunnelers (Foreign Policy) An underground tunnel stretching from Mexico to Arizona discovered last week is believed to be the most sophisticated of its kind in U.S. history. Complete with a ventilation system, water lines, electrical wiring, and a rail system, the tunnel impressed U.S. authorities in part because it ran beneath ground considered highly unconducive to tunnel-building.
Pandemic wrecks global Class of 2020’s hopes for first job (AP) British fashion school graduate Phoebe St. Leger’s dream of landing a job at a design label is on hold. Like many others in the global Class of 2020, the pandemic is clouding her career ambitions. She has applied for about 40 jobs and received only rejections. “All the jobs have all dried up—everywhere,” she said. She knows graduates from previous years who have been fired or furloughed and is prepared to get a job at a bar. “It’s still hard to be hopeful when you’re not seeing anyone doing well at the moment.” Around the world, young people armed with new degrees, diplomas and professional qualifications are struggling to enter the workforce as the pandemic pushes the global economy into recession. COVID-19 has thwarted hopes of landing first jobs—important for jumpstarting careers—as employers cut back graduate recruiting plans or even revoke job offers. U.S. careers website Glassdoor says the number of jobs advertised as “entry level” or “new grad” was down 68% in May from a year ago. In Britain, companies plan to cut student recruitment by 23% this year, according to a survey of 179 businesses by the Institute of Student Employers.
Heatwave fans fire risk for French farmers (Reuters) On a farm in France, firefighters beat down the flames that had turned a field of wheat black, but they were too late to save the combine harvester. Caught in the blaze, it belched out flames and thick smoke while the farmer looked on helpless. Crop and forest fires are a ritual of summer in France, but a warming climate has meant the risk has increased and the danger zone has expanded from southern France to the north, scientists say. The blaze in July that destroyed the combine harvester was in a district near the border with Belgium where, farmers say, worrying about wildfires is something new. Scientists say this July was the driest in about 60 years in France. “If the drought persists and if there is a lot of wind, the situation could quickly get worse,” said Eric Martin of France’s National Institute of Agriculture Research.
Belarus Says Longtime Leader Is Re-elected in Vote Critics Call Rigged (NYT) He bungled the coronavirus pandemic, alienated his longstanding foreign ally and last week faced the biggest anti-government protests in decades, but on Sunday, President Aleksandr G. Lukashenko of Belarus was on course to win his sixth term in office, in an election his critics dismissed as rigged. According to a government-sponsored exit poll released after voting ended, Mr. Lukashenko won just under 80 percent of the vote against four rivals, avoiding a runoff vote. A heavy cloak of security descended over the capital, Minsk, where internet service was cut off, phones worked only sporadically and soldiers and riot police cordoned off the central square and the main public buildings. Long before the results were announced, the opposition, predicting that the count would be illegitimate, had called for protests on Sunday night. The result of the vote, as in previous elections, was never in any real doubt: Mr. Lukashenko controls vote counting, a vast security apparatus and a noisy state media machine unwavering in its support for him and contempt for his rivals.
Hong Kong tycoon Jimmy Lai arrested under security law, bearing out ‘worst fears’ (Reuters) Hong Kong media tycoon Jimmy Lai became the highest-profile person arrested under a new national security law on Monday, detained over suspected collusion with foreign forces as around 200 police searched the offices of his Apple Daily newspaper. Mainland-born Lai, who was smuggled into Hong Kong on a fishing boat when he was a penniless 12-year-old, has been one of the most prominent democracy activists in the Chinese-ruled city and an ardent critic of Beijing. His arrest comes amid Beijing’s crackdown against pro-democracy opposition in the city and further stokes concerns about media and other freedoms promised to the former British colony when it returned to China in 1997. China imposed the sweeping new security law on Hong Kong on June 30, drawing condemnation from Western countries. The arrest “bears out the worst fears that Hong Kong’s National Security Law would be used to suppress critical pro-democracy opinion and restrict press freedom”, said Steven Butler, the Committee to Protect Journalists’ Asia programme coordinator.
Beirut protests (Foreign Policy) Political and social unrest has gripped Lebanon since last week’s deadly explosions in Beirut. Thousands of protesters took to the streets on Sunday, attacking a parliamentary precinct in the city with rubble from the blast and demanding the resignation of the government. The demonstrations turned increasingly violent as protesters attempted to gain entry into the legislature, causing security personnel to respond with force. The government has been widely blamed for the accident after it was revealed that ammonium nitrate—a highly explosive chemical which helped intensify the blast—had been stored in the city with official knowledge, despite warnings from inspectors about the danger it posed.
World donors demand change before money to rebuild Beirut (AP) World leaders and international organizations pledged nearly $300 million in emergency humanitarian aid to Beirut in the wake of the devastating explosion, but warned on Sunday that no money for rebuilding the capital will be made available until Lebanese authorities commit themselves to the political and economic reforms demanded by the people.
Lebanon’s government resigns (AP) Lebanon’s prime minister says he is stepping down from his job in the wake of the Beirut port explosion last week that triggered public fury and mass protests. In a brief televised speech, Prime Minister Hassan Diab said on Monday that he is taking “a step back” so he can stand with the people “and fight the battle for change alongside them.” He said: “I declare today the resignation of this government. May God protect Lebanon,” repeating the last phrase three times. A brief while earlier, Diab’s Cabinet resigned. The developments follow a weekend of anti-government protests in the wake of the Aug. 4 explosion in Beirut’s port that caused widespread destruction, killed at least 160 people and injured about 6,000 others.
Extreme poverty rises (AP) With the virus and its restrictions, up to 100 million more people globally could fall into the bitter existence of living on just $1.90 a day, according to the World Bank. That’s “well below any reasonable conception of a life with dignity,” the United Nations special rapporteur on extreme poverty wrote this year. And it comes on top of the 736 million people already there, half of them in just five countries: Ethiopia, India, Nigeria, Congo and Bangladesh. India is struggling with one of the world’s largest virus caseloads and the effects of a lockdown so abrupt and punishing that Prime Minister Narendra Modi asked the poor to forgive him. Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has surpassed India with the most people in extreme poverty—roughly half its citizens. And Congo remains one of the world’s most crisis-ridden countries, with outbreaks of Ebola and measles smoldering. Even China, Indonesia and South Africa are expected to have more than 1 million people each fall into extreme poverty, the World Bank says. “It’s a huge, huge setback for the entire world,” Gayle Smith, president of the ONE Campaign to end extreme poverty, told The Associated Press. Smith, a former administrator for the U.S. Agency for International Development, called the global response to the crisis “stunningly meager.”

[Second week of 2018.09] Busan Indie Connect Festival!
Sorry I was late, I had to postpone the posting one day because the schedule was so busy. So, thank you for waiting my devlog!
Hi, there!
I will try to make an important announcement before the start of devlog. Starting this week, I started to do level design, plot, and visual work.
So, coincidentally, it became impossible to avoid making it difficult to write a devlog every Sunday, so I decided to write a diary every two weeks, and decided to post a status report on another week.
However, this week is the second week, so I will fill in the details. (First, third week = status) (Second, fourth week = devlog)
Tumblr media
And the theme of this devlog is the indie game event held in Busan. In other words, I participated as an exhibitor at the Busan Indie Connect Festival.
It was a good place to meet many developers. Thanks to Waffle, the developer of ‘The Starry Night’ who was able to provide such a precious place. Let's begin.
Plot writing... and improving dialogue window...
Now, as I mentioned above, I'm working on the details of the plot in the current big-frame game, and I'm working on improving the script as well as moving the dialog window interface from the canvas to the world space.
Tumblr media
This is the situation I had working on.
Depart for Busan!
First, let me introduce the background story that I was able to participate as an exhibitor of The Starry Night.
...
Waffle, who previously worked on The Starry Night, is a close ally with me. I knew that he was not a major in programming. He was developing mobile games using RPG MAKER MV.
One day, after I finished developing, I bored and told Waffle. I was talking how about planning localizing in another language. Then Waffle said, I will copy the whole project and build a version that has changed the language. I have heard some very shocking plans for me.
So, from that moment on, I've become a developer of text localization plugins using JSON, and I've become a developer who has helped to develop a pretty important part of the game.
Because MV is an engine that uses JavaScript, I implemented it right away. It's very easy to use compared to other localization plug-ins. I thought it was good.
Then one day in August I received a phone call. It was a phone call from Waffle, and I was offered a suggestion from Waffle to go to BIC and meet with the developers there.
I think now that the game being developed is very early in the game, and if it is not now, it's hard to make a chance. I was ready to talk with you right away.
So on the 12th of September...
Tumblr media
We took the exhibition model of Tia, the protagonist of The Starry Night(...)
Tumblr media
Then we arrived at the hostel's hostel. Two people were free, and the next person had to pay $ 20 per night for a discounted price. I think it is well worth going out because it is something I can not easily experience where I go.
Tumblr media
Receiving the exhibitor ID card...
Tumblr media
It was before the start, but we went ahead and watched. It's one of the biggest gaming events in the Hall of Fame.
Tumblr media
The entrance has a BIC title on the container. I feel something different.
Tumblr media
At the end of the day, we moved to Haeundae, and we watched the beach. The beach where the pigeons go, rather than the seagulls, feels different lol
Tumblr media
And when I came back to my accommodation, this BIC platinum sponsor, Nicalis, welcomed the exhibitors with a very impressive font(...).
Tumblr media
It is the appearance of the Haeundae market. It feels very different.
First Schedule - Conference Day
It is the day when the exhibitors of BIC gather in the movie theater and give a lecture to people gathered in various fields all day.
It's time to share and learn important and useful information about indie games.
It is the day when BIC exhibitors come together in a movie theater and lectures gathered in various fields all day. It's time to share and learn important and useful information about indie games.
Tumblr media
After the conference schedule, there was a network party hosted by Nicholas. Unfortunately, due to some kind of reason, I could not participate...
Tumblr media
Still, Waffle went to the party and brought a Hamburger called Nicalis Touch(?).
Second Schedule - Business Day
Business Day is a time to prepare booths and communicate with the developers again before the exhibition.
Tumblr media
B-15, The Starry Night's booth. And we check out the equipment we requested...
Tumblr media
We hastened to prepare the booth. Waffle made many preparations for this exhibition.
Tumblr media
And I have seen 8 Doors that show this time again since Unite Seoul 2017. The game has changed a lot. I was surprised to see that the development was progressing to some extent and that the game was also a more well-caught frame. I will expect it!
Tumblr media
And as the developers of 8Doors have used RPG MAKER since before, so he interested and have also come to The Starry Night. he was talked a lot about Waffle and MV.
In the meantime, LSH, a representative of Psychoflux, came and talked for a moment.
Tumblr media
And this is an analog game that was personally the most expected.
youtube
As you can see, I expected that it was a game that had both sound effects and game play with the idea that it can not be tried anywhere because it is not software and play video alone.
Tumblr media
When completed the game, it is shown play time of game. The number of red dots in the center is minutes, and the red dots on the outside are seconds. It took four minutes and 45 seconds. It was a really fun game.
Tumblr media
SHE and the light bearer is a conversational point and click adventure game. Overall, the art style was cute, too, and the characters had a unique voice in the conversation. To briefly summarize, it is said that a firefly leaves the adventure in search of a lost mother.
Tumblr media
Nicalis has been able to play Crystal Crisis, RemiLore, The binding of Issac: Repentance, Dungreed's Nintendo Switch version, Blade Strangers. The binding of Issac: Repentance confrimed can do Co-Op play by ask question. The demo ends on the third floor.
Tumblr media
It is a very difficult boss rush game, SACRED STONES. I thought it would have been nice to have a headset or a speaker for experince but there's doesn't have, anyway I think the game itself is really cool.
Tumblr media
IndigoBlue Game Studio's Blindia, famous for SPLIT BULLET and Vectorium. This game has DARK ECHO's style and with the action and strategic aspects are highlighted. I can shoot a gun!
youtube
Dance of fire and ice was also seen by the developers themselves. I can see that the developer has changed from Flash to Unity and the graphics have improved significantly, but I have not been able to shoot properly with the camera. In addition to what you can see in the video, and some pretty interesting variations such as a diagonal column.
Tumblr media
It's called MagiCat, and I played the game for a while. Oh my gosh... It's impressive that if you like cats, you might be stunned. It was also a good game design.
So the schedule is over...
Tumblr media
And it is the opening ceremony informing the start of the event!
Tumblr media
A variety of food from the support of the Canadian government was displayed at the front. I ate taco with sauce at first time!
Three, Fourth Schedule - Public Visit
Now, the weekend is finally here to can communicate with players and gamers.
Tumblr media
But I did not make The Starry Night directly, so I helped organize the booth and guide and introduce foreign guests. Photo shows I had Aseprite's source code build(...)
Tumblr media
By the way...
At first, Aseprite has laggy were caught. I initially thought this was due to the fact that it works in debug mode, but the real reason was the 4K resolution(...)
Tumblr media
Anyway, if change the target to system in Program > Properties > Compatibility > DPI then can use it normally.
Tumblr media
I heard from the end, but there was a story that there were many speculations that this BIC would have come more people.
Tumblr media
Waffle surprisingly made the demo quite long. It's hard for many to enjoy, but I think this will help people know what game is.
Tumblr media
This is Muse dash. It was an impressive game because the animations were made to fit well into the beat.
Tumblr media
Wow, there was a place to show the development. He is a developer of the rhythm doctor, Dance of fire and ice.
During the exhibition, one developer has shared a leaflet.
"Let's have an informal party and get together at Haeundae in front of the hostel at 9PM!"
So we arrived at Haeundae and it was 9PM, but I could not see people, so I gave up and tried to return. However, I found a person wearing an ID card on the other side of the traffic light, and the developers who were wandering around looking for a party place gathered one by one and the party proceeded.
It was a good time to talk to a lot of developers here. I had talked with LSH again, and he says I have been watching the development journal steadily, and I was surprised to see you doing the animation work.
Tumblr media
I had a schedule to perform the awards ceremony and the LAN party once again from 5:00 on the last Sunday, but unfortunately I came back as soon as 6 o'clock due to personal reason.
But this opportunity is not uncommon, so I think it makes sense.
Oh my legs!
Tumblr media
I am still making a small part of the plot and game system, and still keeping one commit per day. In the future, the amount of development journals will decrease. Because, as I mentioned at the beginning of this devlog, there are a lot of things I'm working on that are hard to disclose. I'm sad.
LSH said for that "most of the indie game developers when if keep writing the devlog, they arrive at this point, the devlog's post date term is getting longer." And he said, "that is a natural process. if you are worried about the devlog's quantity, how about put up a devlog every two week?" So I decided to try this part of the time.
One day I will improve my perfection until the day I show my game from there.
See you in next week, thank you :)

Facebook unveils "metaverse" app that seeks to move work meetings to VR
Facebook is pitching a new option for distant coworkers who want to gather and regain some of the spontaneous creative space lost in a world of Zoom meetings: Strap on a VR headset.
Why it matters: Facebook is debuting Horizon Workrooms, a free app that is part of the company's effort to create a broad "metaverse" in which physical distance is removed as a barrier for those who want to interact with one another.
How it works:
The app, being released in beta form today, allows people with an Oculus Quest 2 headset to gather in a conference room-like space using the headset's internal cameras to replicate hand motions and other visual cues.
It also uses spatial audio to link each person to their physical spot in the virtual room, another way to make it feel more like a real gathering.
Participants can collaborate on a shared whiteboard as well as bring in photos and other documents.
People can also bring their PC or Mac screen into the experience and take notes on the keyboard, using the device's pass-through camera to see their fingers typing.
Doing so allows people to take notes as well as do the other things they would at an in-person meeting — like surreptitiously surf the web when the boss starts yammering on. (Others can't see what you are doing on your virtual computer.)
Participants without headsets can also join in Workroom gatherings, appearing as a video chat on a large display within the virtual conference room.
In a briefing with reporters this week, Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg dropped in, first via video chat and then in VR using his avatar. "We shouldn't really have to physically be together to feel present or collaborate or brainstorm," Zuckerberg said. "We think it is going to be a big use case for VR."
Tumblr media
Participants can bring a virtual version of their computer screen and keyboard into a meeting, allowing for note-taking and web browsing. Image: Facebook
Between the lines: The technology is clearly in beta for a reason. When Zuckerberg initially entered the VR meeting, his mouth wasn't moving, which another Facebook executive said was creepy. He encouraged his boss to exit and re-enter — which he did, solving the problem.
Battery life remains a significant issue for VR headsets, with my demo unit down to a quarter of its charge by the end of the hourlong meeting.
On the other hand, it does serve as an effective way to prevent long meetings.
The big picture: Facebook sees office meetings as just one type of social interaction that will move to the world of mixed reality, with entertainment and other personal activities being as much or more of the company's focus when it comes to the "metaverse."
Zuckerberg said he now thinks of Facebook as more of a metaverse company than as a social media business.
Nor is Facebook alone in seeing the potential of VR to improve remote meetings. We've written a bunch about Spatial, a startup taking a similar approach to meetings. Its platform supports Oculus Quest, Microsoft Hololens and other headsets, as well as those joining from a phone or PC. (Here's a video of me trying out their technology.)
Go deeper: Here is a video of Zuckerberg showing off the technology and touting its promise.

LG Smartphone Business to Become Profitable by 2021, CEO Suggests

phone in India, and LG Electronics CEO Kwon Bong-seok has announced that the company plans to make the smartphone business profitable by 2021. He didn’t detail on how the company will manage to make that happen, but said that it looks to expand its “mobile lineup and steadily release new [smartphones] attached with some wow factors to woo consumers.”
The CEO spoke to reporters at a CES press conference in Las Vegas, claiming that the dwindling smartphone will become profitable once again. He claimed that this feat will be achieved by 2021. “LG Electronics mobile business is going to be profitable by 2021. I can say we can make that happen as LG Electronics will expand our mobile lineup and steadily release new ones attached with some wow factors to woo consumers,” he said (via Korea Times). He didn’t go into detail on what those ‘wow factors’ may be, and didn’t want to dwell on the tanking profit numbers either.
The report says that LG is expected to generate KRW 98.6 billion in operating profit for Q4 2019, much less that the KRW 270 billion operating profit that was predicted by market analysts. As part of its cost cutting efforts, the company even relocated its smartphone production unit from Pyeongtaek in South of Seoul to Haiphong in Vietnam in 2019.
He also spoke about the emerging 8K TV segment, and said that it will still take time to get an ‘explosive response’. “The reason why we put up the banner of ‘OLED first’ is to suggest using OLED panels for 8K TV is the right direction. We don’t expect an explosive response for an 8K TV in the market. It needs more time given broadcasters are not ready yet (to broadcast their content in 8K resolution),” he said. He also confirmed that the rollable TV demoed at CES 2020 will be launched in the first half or latest by the third quarter of 2020.

Google officially unveiled its new flagship ‘Pixel 4’ smartphone today.
With a camera that captures detail that others can’t, a new way to use your phone without touching it, a new Google Assistant, and a fast and responsive display, Pixel 4 packs new technology into a new design. Best of all, Pixel includes the latest version of Android, which gets better with each update.
Google’s Pixel 4 and 4 XL have been leaked so often, and so thoroughly, that it’s hard to imagine it contains any surprises at all. Thankfully, that’s not completely true. Yes, early reports — including dispatches from Google itself — have exposed just about every component the folks in Mountain View used here. What most of them couldn’t fully describe was how different it feels from any of Google’s other phones. That’s partly because of their tweaked designs, but also because Google is trying to define the Pixels by more than just clean software and great cameras.
The basics
As usual, the Pixel 4 and 4 XL share a common foundation: They both use Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 855 chipset with 6GB of RAM, they both come with either 64GB or 128GB of storage. The rest of those leaks were spot-on, too. The Pixel 4 and 4XL come in three colors (including a fetching new orange that’s easily this year’s fashionista pick), and have big triple-camera arrays sitting high on their backs.
With the possible exception of the charming “panda” 2 XL, Google’s smartphones have never really been known for their striking designs. That streak continues this year, too — their designs still come off a little utilitarian compared to some of its rivals. Some people might balk at the phones’ simple aesthetic, but I can’t say I mind; after all, the Pixels have always tended to prioritize substance over style.
It certainly doesn’t hurt that Google has completely changed the way these phones feel — if you’re considering one of the black models, get ready for a glossy, piano-like finish. Only the white and orange variants have matte glass backs, and because of that, they’re easily my favorites of the bunch. No matter which Pixel strikes your fancy, though, all of them now have what feel like grippy plastic running around their edges. It was a little disconcerting at first, and even now I can’t help but think they feel a little cheap, but at least I didn’t have to worry about dropping a demo phone.
Both of these phones also pack what 19:9 “Smooth” displays, which can refresh as quickly as 90 times per second in certain situations — say, when you’re scrolling through long chunks of text. It’s not always the most noticeable change, but when you do spot it, it’s hard not to wish the screen moved that fast all the time.
Tumblr media
More control
As always, you can poke at the Pixel 4’s touchscreen, or squeeze its body if you want to invoke Google’s updated Assistant. (More on that in a bit.) Thanks to the company’s incredibly tiny Soli radar sensor, though, you can now just wave your hand in front of a Pixel 4 to control it. It’s all very Jedi when it works.
At least, in theory, the Pixel 4’s Soli system works a lot like the LG G8’s Z Camera: some extra hardware spots your hand in front of the phone and prompts the phone to react to your hand gestures. The difference is, using Soli doesn’t make me want to tear my hair out. In my very limited time playing with it, Soli did a much better job of recognizing mid-air swipes in front of the phone than the Z Camera ever did, which I guess shouldn’t be much surprise.
That said, I am a little surprised at how limited Soli feels right now — at least on the demo units made available to us, you could flick back and forth between songs using those flicks I mentioned, or disable an alarm by moving your hand closer to the phone. Soli also helps the Pixel 4’s face unlock happen faster, by using radar readings to determine when to fire up the front-facing camera. Sure, that’s helpful, but hardly what I’d call an exciting use-case. With all that said, though, it’s far too early to make a call on Soli’s overall helpfulness — Google had to start somewhere, and it’ll take time for developers to embrace it. (Or, you know, decide not to embrace it. We’ll see.)
Tumblr media
Google’s Assistant got a big update here, too — one that makes it terribly small. As Google said back at its I/O developer conference, the company shrank down its Assistant model to the point where it actually fits inside a smartphone; the benefit here is that many common Assistant commands can be processed without being farmed out to some to the remote server. It’s a great idea in theory and Google’s demos paint an ambitious picture of what the new Assistant can do, but my quick demo experience wasn’t nearly as fruitful — the Pixel 4 had trouble remembering an earlier command when I gave it a new one, so I couldn’t have the sorts of lightning-fast conversations I’d hoped for. We’ll try this again when we’re outside a massively crowded demo room to see if that fixes things.
Tumblr media
The camera
Unfortunately, there’s only so much we can test about the camera in a crowded demo area, but one thing I can definitely say is that Google’s implementation of zoom is extremely impressive. Last year, Google used computational photography to account for the lack of a dedicated telephoto lens like its competitors have, but this year Google added a second lens and paired it with its AI smarts. At first glance, it’s an impressive combination. You don’t even need to worry about switching between the Pixel 4’s two back lenses, you just slide the zoom bar to where you like, shoot the photo, and Google’s software takes care of the rest.
Google’s implementation dual sliders to let you capture more detail in both dark and light parts of a frame is simple in practice but should be very handy for anyone who wants a little more flexibility in how they shoot. Other features, like shooting a night sky to capture a dark, detailed star field we’ll obviously have to try out on our own.
Everything else
That Recorder app: I’ve long relied on an AI transcription app called Otter.ai to do the exact same thing the Pixel’s new Recorder app does, and Google’s live transcriptions work well enough that I just might have to cancel my Otter subscription. Sorry guys, no hard feelings!
These batteries: Reports published prior to the event claimed the smaller Pixel would pack a 2,800mAh battery, and that the XL would use a 3,700mAh cell. I haven’t been able to confirm that just yet, but if true, we could be looking at another year of disappointing Pixel battery life. There’s no word yet on how much power the Soli radar requires, but driving these displays at 90Hz is no small feat, and devices like the OnePlus 7 Pro and Razer Phone 2 with similarly fast screens pack bigger batteries to cope. This would also mean the Pixel 4 has a slightly lower capacity battery than last year’s Pixel 3, which, yeah, doesn’t feel great.

Defining quotation styles with the <q> tag
When styling your site you may be happy with the "default, straight quotation style", but if you're keen on getting your typography just right then there is a way to ensure your quotation marks are “smart” via CSS.
As explained here, the HTML <q> element signals that the contained text is a short inline quotation. Most browsers implement this by surrounding the text in "quotation marks". You can, however, add a style to modify what automatically appears around the text:
q {  quotes: "“" "”"; }
It may be hard to make out in email, but this rule will wrap your inline quote with alternative 'smart' quotation marks. This blog post expands on how this simple tip can be used for multilingual sites, such as using differing quotation rules for different languages (like German).
Another idea is outlined in this recent blog post from Michael Lazarski, who shows how this technique can even be used with emoji for an 🙌 altogether different 🙌 approach.

Our Expectations from INTERSPEECH 2019
Tumblr media
In less than a month, from Sep. 15–19, 2019, Graz, Austria will become home for INTERSPEECH, the world‘s most prominent conference on spoken language processing. The conference unites the science and technology under one roof and becomes a platform for over 2000 participants who will share their insights, listen to eminent speakers, and attend tutorials, challenges, exhibitions and satellite events.
What are our expectations of it as participants and presenters?
Keynotes
Tanja Schultz, the spokesperson of the University Bremen area “Minds, Media, Machines”, will talk on biosignal processing for human-machine interaction. As human interaction involves a wide range of biosignals from speech, gestures, motion, and brain activities, it is crucial to correctly interpret all of them to ensure truly effective human-machine interaction. We are waiting for Tanja Schultz to describe her work on Silent Speech Interfaces that rely on articulatory muscle movement to recognize and synthesize silently produced speech, Brain Computer Interfaces that use brain activity to recognize speech and convert electrocortical signals into audible speech. Let’s move the the new era of brain-to-text and brain-to-speech technology!
Manfred Kaltenbacher of Vienna University of Technology will discuss physiology and physics of voice production. This talk has a more medical slant, as it looks at voice production from the point of view of physiology and physics. At the same time, it will discuss current computer simulations for pre-surgical predictions of voice quality, and development of examination and training of voice professionals — an interesting step from usual technology-oriented talks.
Mirella Lapata, Professor of natural language processing in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh, will talk about learning natural language interfaces with neural models. Back to technology and AI, the talk will address the structured prediction problem of mapping natural language onto machine-interpretable representations. We definitely think that it will be useful for any NLP specialist to know more about a neural network-based general modeling framework — the most promising approach of recent years.
Tumblr media
Tutorials
There are eight of them and we love them all! The tutorials tackle diverse topics, but they all discuss the most interesting recent developments and breakthroughs.
Two tutorials concern Generative adversarial networks, showing once again the power of this approach. The tutorial we are going to is offered by National Taiwan University and Academia Sinica. It is dedicated to speech signal processing, including speech enhancement, voice conversion, speech synthesis and, more specifically, sentence generation. Moreover, we can expect real-life GAN algorithms for text style transformation, machine translation and abstractive summarization without paired data.
The second tutorial by Carnegie Mellon University and Bar-Ilan University shows how GANs can be used for speech and speaker recognition and other systems. The tutorial will discuss whether it is possible to fool systems with carefully crafted inputs and how to identify and avoid attacks of such crafted “adversarial” inputs. Finally, we will discuss recent work on introducing “backdoors” into systems through poisoned training examples, such that the system can be triggered into false behaviors when provided specific types of inputs, but not otherwise.
We are also waiting for the tutorial on another popular technique in speech processing, the end-to-end approach. We are expecting from the tutorial by Mitsubishi, Nagoya University, NTT and Johns Hopkins University some interesting insights into advanced methods for neural end-to-end speech processing, namely, unification, integration, and implementation. The tutorial will explore a new open source toolkit ESPnet (end-to-end speech processing toolkit) used on the unified framework and integrated systems.
Nagoya University specialists will offer a tutorial on statistical voice conversion with direct waveform modelling. The tutorial will give an overview of this approach and introduce freely-available software, “sprocket” as a statistical VC toolkit and “PytorchWaveNetVocoder” as a neural vocoder toolkit. It looks like a good chance to try your hand on voice conversion.
Google AI is preparing a tutorial on another hot topic, neural machine translation. However, the tutorial looks more like an overview of the history, mainstream techniques and recent advancements.
Expanding the keynote speech, specialists from Université Grenoble Alpes and Maastricht University will present biosignal-based speech processing, including silent speech to brain-computer interfaces with real data and code.
Uber AI will present their approach to modelling and deploying dialog systems with open-source tools from scratch.
Finally, Paderborn University and NTT will present their insights into microphone array signal processing and deep learning for speech enhancement with hybrid techniques uniting signal processing and neural networks.

Special events and challenges
Special sessions and challenges constitute a separate part of the conference and focus on relevant ‘special’ topics, ranging from computational paralinguistics, distant speech recognition and zero resource speech processing to processing of child’s speech, emotional speech and code switching. All papers are already submitted, but it will be very interesting to see the finals and discuss the winners’ approaches.
Besides from challenges, there will be much more special events and satellite conferences to meet the needs of all specialists working in the field of speech processing: from a workshop for young female researchers to a special event for high school teachers. Participant will be able to join the first ever INTERSPEECH Hackathon, or choose between nine specialized conferences and satellite workshops.
SLaTE
A special event that is the most important for us is the workshop held by the Special Interest Group (SIG) of the International Speech Communication Association (ISCA) as a part of Speech and Language Technology in Education (SLaTE) events. The event brings together practitioners and researchers working on the use of speech and natural language processing for education. This year’s workshop will not only have an extensive general session with 19 papers, but also it will feature a special session about the Spoken CALL Shared Task (version 3) with 4 papers, and 4 demo papers.
Tumblr media
Our poster
Our biggest expectation is, of course, our participation! The article written by our stellar specialists Ievgen Karaulov and Dmytro Tkanov entitled “Attention model for articulatory features detection” was approved for a poster session. Our approach is a variation of end-to-end speech processing. The article proves that using binary phonological features in the Listen, Attend and Spell (LAS) architecture can show good results for phones recognition even on a small training set like TIMIT. More specifically, the attention model is used to train manners and places of articulation detectors end-to-end and to explore joint phones recognition and articulatory features detection in multitask learning settings.
Our SLaTE paper
Yes, we present not just one paper! Since our solution showed the best result in the text subset of CALL v3 shared task, we wrote a paper exploring our approach and now we are going to present it at SLaTE. The paper called “Embedding-based system for the text part of CALL v3 shared task” by four our team members (Volodymyr Sokhatskyi, Olga Zvyeryeva, Ievgen Karaulov, and Dmytro Tkanov) focuses on NNLM and BERT text embeddings and their use in a scoring system to measure grammatical and semantic correctness of students’ phrases. Our approach does not rely on the reference grammar file for scoring proving the possibility to achieve highest results without a predefined set of correct answers.
Even now we already anticipate this INTERSPEECH to be a gala event that will give us more knowledge, ideas and inspiration — and a great adventure for our teammates.

Building a Conference Schedule with CSS Grid
It’s hard to beat the feeling of finding a perfect use for a new technology. You can read every handy primer under the sun and ooh-and-ahh at flashy demos, but the first time you use it on your own project… that’s when things really click.
I gained a new appreciation for CSS Grid when building a flexible layout for a conference schedule. The needs of the project aligned perfectly with grid’s strengths: a two-dimensional (vertical and horizontal) layout with complex placement of child elements. In the process of building a proof of concept, I found a few techniques that made the code highly readable and outright fun to work with.
The resulting demo included some interesting uses of CSS Grid features and forced me to grapple with some details of grid you don’t run into in every day.
Before we get started, it might be a good idea to keep another tab open with the CSS-Tricks guide to CSS Grid to reference the concepts we cover throughout the post.
Defining our layout requirements
I set out to create the following layout thanks to WordCamp, the hundreds of WordPress-focused conferences that happen around the world each year. These varied events range in size and format, yet all use the same schedule layout tool.
Tumblr media
The final layout we’ll build.
I helped schedule a couple WordCamps and styled a WordCamp website, so I knew the shortcomings of the existing HTML table layout. If your schedule didn’t fit in a uniform grid, well…¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Setting out to find a better way, I started by listing the layout requirements:
Sessions of variable length (limited to set time increments) Imagine back-to-back one-hour talks in three rooms alongside a two-hour workshop in another.
Sessions spanning one or more "Tracks"Tracks are usually associated with a specific room in the venue. In the case of my local WordCamp in Seattle, the venue can literally remove a wall to combine two rooms!
Schedule can include empty space A last-minute cancellation or extra-short session creates gaps in a schedule.
Design is easy to customize with CSS WordCamp websites allow theming only via CSS.
Layout can be automatically generated from CMS content Since we’re building a layout from structured session data on thousands of websites, we can’t rely on any HTML or CSS that’s too clever or bespoke.
Getting started: Solid HTML
Before I write any CSS, I always start with rock-solid HTML.
The top-level <div> will have a class of .schedule and serve as the grid parent. Each unique start time gets its own heading followed by all sessions starting at that time. The markup for each session isn’t very important, but make sure that seeing the layout isn’t required to understand when and where a session happens. (You’ll see why in a moment.)
<h2>Conference Schedule</h2> <div class="schedule"> <h3 class="time-slot">8:00am</h3> <div class="session session-1 track-1"> <h4 class="session-title"><a href="#">Session Title</a></h4> <span class="session-time">8:00am - 9:00am</span> <span class="session-track">Track 1</span> <span class="session-presenter">Presenter Name</span> </div> <!-- Sessions 2, 3, 4 --> <h3 class="time-slot">9:00am</h3> <div class="session session-5 track-1"> <h4 class="session-title"><a href="#">Session Title</a></h4> <span class="session-time">9:00am - 10:00am</span> <span class="session-track">Track 1</span> <span class="session-presenter">Presenter Name</span> </div> <!-- Sessions 6, 7, 8 --> <!-- etc... --> </div> <!-- end .schedule -->
Mobile layout and grid fallback complete!
Adding in a bit of up-to-you CSS to make things pretty, our mobile layout and fallback for browsers that don’t support CSS Grid is already complete!
Here’s how mine looks with the colors I used:
Tumblr media
People on phones, zooming in their browsers, or even using Internet Explorer will have no problem finding their favorite sessions at this conference!
Adding the grid layout
Now for the actual CSS Grid part!
My ah-ha moment when building this came from reading Robin’s article here on CSS-Tricks, "Making a Bar Chart with CSS Grid." TL;DR: One grid row represents 1% of the chart's height, so a bar spans the same number of rows as the percentage it represents.
.chart { display: grid; grid-template-rows: repeat(100, 1fr); /* 1 row = 1%! */ } .fifty-percent-bar { grid-row: 51 / 101; /* 101 - 51 = 50 => 50% */ }
That helped me realize that grid is perfect for any layout tied to some regular incremental unit. In the case of a schedule, that unit is time! For this demo, we’ll use increments of 30 minutes, but do whatever makes sense for you. (Just watch out for the Chrome bug that limits Grid layouts to 1000 rows.)
The first version I tried used similar syntax to the bar chart in Robin’s and some basic math to place the sessions. We’re using eight rows because there are eight 30-minute increments between 8 a.m. and 12 p.m. Remember that implicit grid line numbers start at one (not zero), so the grid rows are numbered one through nine.
Tumblr media
A rudimentary version of a single column schedule with numbered grid lines. (View Demo: Numbered Gridlines vs. Named Gridlines)
.schedule { display: grid; grid-template-rows: repeat(8, 1fr); } .session-1 { grid-row: 1 / 3; /* 8am - 9am, 3 - 1 = 2 30-minute increment */ } .session-2 { grid-row: 3 / 6; /* 9am - 10:30am, 6-3 = 3 30-minute increments */ }
The problem with this technique is that placing items on a grid with a lot of rows is very abstract and confusing. (This issue added a ton of complexity to Robin’s bar chart demo, too.)
This is where named grid lines come to the rescue! Instead of relying on grid line numbers, we can give each line a predictable name based on the corresponding time of day.
Tumblr media
By using named grid lines for the schedule, it becomes much easier to place a session. (View Demo: Numbered Gridlines vs. Named Gridlines)
.schedule { display: grid; grid-template-rows: [time-0800] 1fr [time-0830] 1fr [time-0900] 1fr [time-0930] 1fr; /* etc... Note: Use 24-hour time for line names */ } .session-1 { grid-row: time-0800 / time-0900; } .session-2 { grid-row: time-0900 / time-1030; }
That is gloriously easy to understand. There is no complicated math to figure out how many rows there are before and after a session starts or ends. Even better, we can generate grid line names and session layout styles with information stored in WordPress. Throw a start and end time at the grid, and you’re good to go!
Since the schedule has multiple tracks, we’ll need a column for each one. The tracks work in a similar way to the times, using named track lines for each grid column line. There’s also an extra first column for the start time headings.
.schedule { /* continued */ grid-template-columns: [times] 4em [track-1-start] 1fr [track-1-end track-2-start] 1fr [track-2-end track-3-start] 1fr [track-3-end track-4-start] 1fr [track-4-end]; }
Here though, we take named grid lines one step further. Each line gets two names: one for the track it starts and one for the track it ends. This isn’t strictly necessary, but it makes the code much clearer, especially when a session spans more than one column.
With the time- and track-based grid lines defined, we can now place any session we want just from knowing it’s time and track!
.session-8 { grid-row: time-1030 / time-1100; grid-column: track-2-start / track-3-end; /* spanning two tracks! */ }
Putting that all together, we get some lengthy but extremely readable code that is a real joy to work with.
@media screen and (min-width: 700px) { .schedule { display: grid; grid-gap: 1em; grid-template-rows: [tracks] auto /* Foreshadowing! */ [time-0800] 1fr [time-0830] 1fr [time-0900] 1fr [time-0930] 1fr [time-1000] 1fr [time-1030] 1fr [time-1100] 1fr [time-1130] 1fr [time-1200] 1fr; grid-template-columns: [times] 4em [track-1-start] 1fr [track-1-end track-2-start] 1fr [track-2-end track-3-start] 1fr [track-3-end track-4-start] 1fr [track-4-end]; } .time-slot { grid-column: times; } }
<div class="session session-1 track-1" style="grid-column: track-1; grid-row: time-0800 / time-0900;"> <!-- details --> </div> <div class="session session-2 track-2" style="grid-column: track-2; grid-row: time-0800 / time-0900"> <!-- details --> </div> <!-- etc... -->
The final code uses inline styles for session placement which feels right to me. If you don’t like this and are working with more modern browsers, you could pass the line names to CSS via CSS variables.
Quick note: using fr units versus the auto value for row heights
One detail worth noting is the use of the fr unit for defining row heights.
When using 1fr to determine row heights, all rows have the same height. That height is determined by the content of the tallest row in the schedule. (I had to read the W3C spec for fr to figure this out!) That produces a beautiful schedule where height is proportional to time, but can also lead to a very tall layout.
Tumblr media
Using 1fr produces equal-height rows determined by the tallest row in the grid. (View Demo: Grid row heights 1fr vs auto)
For example, if your schedule grid has 15-minute increments from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., that’s a total of 48 grid rows. In that case, you probably want to use auto for your row height because the schedule is much more compact with each grid row's height determined by its content.
Tumblr media
Using auto makes each row the height of its content. (View Demo: Grid row heights 1fr vs auto)
A word about accessibility
There are real concerns about the accessibility of certain CSS Grid techniques. Specifically, the ability to change the order of information visually in ways that don’t match the source order causes problems for people using keyboard navigation.
This layout uses that ability to arbitrarily place items on a grid, so some caution is warranted. However, because the heading and source order align with the visualization of start times, this seems like a safe use to me.
If you’re inspired to do something similar, carefully consider accessibility. It makes sense to order information by time in this case, but I can imagine a legitimate case for TAB order to go down columns rather than across rows. (Modifying this demo to do that shouldn’t be too hard!)
Whatever you do, always consider accessibility.
Adding sticky track names
Finally, it’s time to add in the track names that look like table headers at the top of each column. Since a session’s track is already visible, I chose to hide the "headers" from assistive technology with aria-hidden="true".
The track names go in the first grid row, conveniently named "tracks." As long as you don’t have any weird overflow issues, position: sticky keeps those in view while you scroll.
<span class="track-slot" aria-hidden="true" style="grid-column: track-1;">Track 1</span> <span class="track-slot" aria-hidden="true" style="grid-column: track-2;">Track 2</span> <span class="track-slot" aria-hidden="true" style="grid-column: track-3;">Track 3</span> <span class="track-slot" aria-hidden="true" style="grid-column: track-4;">Track 4</span>
.track-slot { display: none; /* only visible with Grid layout */ } @supports( display:grid ) { @media screen and (min-width:700px) { .track-slot { grid-row: tracks; display: block; position: sticky; top: 0; z-index: 1000; background-color: rgba(255,255,255,.9); } } }
It’s a slick little finishing touch to the final demo. ✨
The result
Here’s how things look with everything we’ve covered put together!
See the Pen Conference Schedule with CSS Grid by Mark Root-Wiley (@mrwweb) on CodePen.
We’re just getting started
This schedule is definitely the most satisfying use of CSS Grid I’ve ever made. I love how "data-driven" and semantic the line naming is, and the accessibility and CMS requirements fit in perfectly without any inconvenience.
The only question left for me is what other types of "data-driven" grids are out there to build? I’ve seen some great calendar layouts and here’s a Monopoly board layout. What about a football field, a timeline, restaurant tables, or theater seats? What else?

Samsung and LG to demo 5G smartphones at MWC 2019
AI was the hottest trend in 2018, but now 2019 and 5G will be the buzzword. All major manufacturers are going for the gigabit speeds, including Xiaomi, which is planning to introduce Mi Mix 3 5G around late February. This is when MWC 2019 is happening, and according to industry sources from South Korea, domestic players Samsung and LG are also going to be delivering 5G-enabled phones then. Both companies will demo their units during the conference, along with other expected phones. Samsung is preparing for the anniversary of its Galaxy flagships and the Galaxy S10 is going to...

E3 2017 predictions
E3 predictions
In general these come from my thoughts, but also include ideas I’ve heard floated around the web which I completely agree with. Avoiding the already announced/leaked stuff, since that’s not fun!
I’ve sort predictions for all main presentations into 3 different categories based on likelihood (“Lock it in, Reggie” (very confident), “50/50” and “swinging for the fences” (super unlikely but I gotta go all in)). Also, because I’m Connell, this skews Nintendo, but I do have thoughts on everyone! And almost entirely positive ones!
These are in order of the presentation times, hence Nintendo being last. Oh, and a shadow drop is an unannounced game or feature being available for download immediately.
General Predictions/Trends:
- One final push for remastered collections.
- The PC gaming show will be a shit-show again.
- After “Seven Nation Army” did so well for the Battlefield 1 trailer, at LEAST 3 other trailers will use a contemporary song for a game set in another time.
EA:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Need for Speed will have a Cops vs Racers mode. Because it is always the best thing. Shutting down fools for daring to turn MY roads into a race track is always the best.
- FIFA presentation will not mention the Switch version at all. Info will only be turned up at the show floor, with 2-3 units available. There will be a very simple token minigame so they can justify it as being “built for switch”, but it is 99% the PS3/360 version.
50/50:
- Mass Effect 1-3 Remastered collection, for PS4 and Xbox one. Designed to win back trust from gamers who were burned hard by Andromeda, which really damaged the brand. This leads to my further prediction (not for this though) that ME5 then connects both stories together, where the Andromeda crew find a device that allows them to send a message with information back in time to Shephards brain and bam, you’re playing with the character’s people liked again.
- Sim City. It’s been long enough since the last Sim City, which was disastrous. Time for EA to show they learned from their mistakes and can take on city: skylines
 Singing for the fences:
- Mass Effect Trilogy also for the Switch. Despite the only support being a terrible FIFA game thus far, the actual sales of the system will be seen as an opportunity… to sell old games again with very little extra work. Perhaps some token amiibo functionality in the character creator.
Microsoft:
Obviously, this will be all about Scorpio. Every game will make a point to include something about how the Scorpio version is enhanced. Also apologies, don’t really have much
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Forza 5.
- Scorpio will have VR featured heavily
 50/50:
- Scorpio’s final name will be: Xbox Scorpio. Microsoft is done with numbers.
 50/50:
- It will be revealed that Scorpio, unlike PS4Pro, will have games exclusive to it.
 Swinging for the fences:
- Crackdown demo shadow drop
- Exclusive John Wick videogame for scorpio
- BATTLETOADS
Bethesda:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Wolfenstein Titan(?) official reveal.
- Prey DLC chapters.
 50/50:
- Switch Skyrim has Zelda content in it. Because why else would someone pay $60 US for this game for a third time?
- Elder Scrolls VI revealed. Will feature at least 2 of the regions. Possibly Elsweyr and Valenwood
 Swinging for the fences:
- Elder Scrolls finally bring back the Dwemer, either by reviving them or setting it in the distant past.
Ubisoft:
So… most of this conference is already leaked, but still…. Uh… hm. Well here’s a few somethings.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Rabbids/Mario will have a CG teaser. Gameplay saved for Nintendo.
 50/50:
- On stage reveal for Farcry will include not only making fun of the people who got so angry that the villians are a white Christian cult, but there will be an embarrassing on-stage play where people pretend to be storming the stage to protest the treatment of horrible people.
 Swinging for the fences:
- A switch exclusive Assassin’s Creed side-story, much like they did for Vita around Assassin’s Creed 3.
- Rabbids/Mario features a cover of “All Star”, covered by Rabbids themselves, because this game will be drowning in memes. And I will hate this while secretly loving this.
Sony:
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Sony saves IO interactive, Hitman 2 will be PS4 exclusive. Microsoft SHOULD do this, but… this feels more like a Sony move.
- MASSIVE Spiderman blowout, including a lot of show floor stuff. Playable demo. No tie in to the movie, but instead a new story with Goblin and the sinister 6 as the villians. And there’ll be some shitty day 1 pre-order crap, probably involving a Black Cat side story. F4 will cameo, but play no major roles – however Insomniac will be building a shared games universe. Yes, even with the Squaresoft stuff.
- Bloodborne 2. It will happen.
50/50:
- A real, honest to god Kingdom Hearts 3 trailer, with worlds revealed, including Moana and Frozen.
- Shenmue 1+2 Remastered announced. With Shenmue 3 delayed (and that having been inevitable for some time), this would be a smart move to capitalise on the clear demand for more Ryo.
- Another Last of Us Part 2 teaser, but no gameplay yet.
- English Dragon Quest XI release date, mid 2018.
- Red Dead 2 trailer, first with actual gameplay. I also think this will reveal that Zelda-like free climbing is being implemented.
 Swinging for the fences:
- The vita returns as a phone. The switch has shown portable games are still viable, vita has some life in Asian territories, and Sony want to keep the remote play train going. Destined to still fail? Probably! But let’s not let reality kill HYPE.
- Last of Us Part 2 prelude chapter available now, for free. One hour of set up, basically a demo. But that’s what they do to get the kids excited.
- Spyro Trilogy remastered. Activision gotta do something with the guy.
- Red Dead 2 trailer showcases a train heist. I LOVE train heists.
Nintendo:
In general, there won’t be much or any 3DS. They’re getting a lot of that out of the way this week already.
Lock it in, Reggie:
- Xenoblade 2 is not delayed, December 2018. Playable on show floor.
- Mario Odyssey for October 2017. Massive show floor presence.
- Mario Kart DLC, same format as for WiiU – 2 packs of tracks, but this time it’s 8 racing and 2 battle tracks, as well as 3 characters and karts each. A shadow drop of the ability to buy the
- Zelda DLC part 1 shadow drop. Teaser for the rest of the DLC.
- Picross Switch, available now. Not Picross 3D though, they’ll hold off on that.
- Rabbids/Mario gameplay demo
- Dragon Quest XI for Switch officially announced
- Everyone on stage will wear goofy hats because of Mario Odyssey, because hats is a big thing in that game. Hats will grant abilities.
- Splatoon 2 test fire round 2 will be announced to begin the next weekend, with significant tweaks.
- New ARMs content announced, with new ARMs avaialable immediately and
50/50:
- Massive update to switch UI, shadow dropped. Includes multiple UI styles, with Badge arcade built in for further customisation, folders, linking to old Nintendo friends lists, musical themes. Further themes will be on eshop going forward, like 3DS. And finally, this also includes the new online system, hence the new details revealed about it last week.
- Animal Crossing Switch. Early 2018, with much improved social features. Massive amiibo functionality, much like New Leaf now has. It’ll have a new hook, not sure what though. My guess is some Sim City style mayoral stuff like setting up and supplying utilities.
- Warioware Switch, holiday 2017. It’s been a while for the Rhythm Heaven/Warioware team. I NEED THIS ONE NINTENDO.
- Smash Brothers 4 Switch, Q2 2018, rereleased with the best levels from the WiiU and 3DS levels, plus an expanded single player mode. It’s just too crowded for this game yet, but they don’t need to hold off for too long, because it’ll be an evergreen. There will be a teaser though, starring Inklings, Ice Climbers and Spring Man.
- Mario Maker Switch for Q1 2018. It can’t release this year, it needs space away from Mario Odyssey. The game will include a new “switch” block which when hit in game alternates the game style. There will also be playable Mario, Luigi, Peach and Toad for each game type, each with different styles, and a different switch block or pipe that changes your character mid-level.
- Skyward Sword HD for switch, with optional non-motion controls for boring people. Q2 2018.
- Partnership with Activision to make an Amiibo action game. You might think this is a swing for the fence, but: Toys for Bob is out of a gig right now. And this would sell better than any recent Skylanders game. Activision would release special versions of select characters, so they can get their cut from the toy sales.
- Donkey Kong Country Returns 3, Q1 2018, by Monster Games. They’ve been quiet for a while, they ported Returns to 3DS, they assisted Retro on Tropical Freeze, this is what they’ve been working towards.
- Dead Cells announced for Switch.
- Layton Collection announced… for phone. Lady Layton western release date.
- Retro’s game. And it’s NOT Metroid, but a sci-fi Western RPG.
- This is a long shot, but T2 is relatively impressed by the switch, so: GTA5 for Switch. With a chunk of the DLC included.
- Switch Sports, holiday 2017. The return of the king. All the games as released for WiiU, plus a few from Wii Sports resort (airplane), with additional modes for each sport. I do have a “swinging for the fence” on this though…
 Swinging for the fences:
- …Wuhu World. Remember Pilotwings 64? Where Little USA was a huge island with different activities, sights to see, and so on? Well, take Wuhu Island, scoot up the detail and resolution, include the small surrounding golf islands, and add a few other themed islands the same size as Wuhu (snow island, city island, etc). It’s a free game where you get the islands and one activity per island, and can walk/drive around each island. Dotted around each is various locations that count as home bases for various sports/vehicles from Wii Sports, Pilotwings and some new items. Each of these is paid, and comes with various different modes and missions. This could be further expanded over time, and allows Nintendo to make money from series that could no longer be sold alone.
- Mario Kart DLC includes mission mode, which is available day 1 with missions on existing courses and expands with the DLC.
- New 2D Metroid by a small team from within Retro. There is a 3D game teased to be in the works also, but not from Retro.
- Splatoon 2 Octoling content and Amiibo, including Octoling mascots. I need this, Nintendo.
- EXCITE. TRUCK. 2.
- Nintendo Pinball. Remember Pokemon Pinball? And Metroid Prime Pinball? That but across multiple Nintendo series.
- Sonic and Mario All Stars Racing Transformed. Sumo has to have been making something aside from Snake Pass, and Sonic Racing 2 sold extremely well on the switch.
- Assault Android Cactus Deluxe for Switch. I believe in you Tim! Even if you aren’t even attempting this!

VIDEO EDITING PORTFOLIO
Hey! Welcome to my video editing portfolio. Feel free to click the links below. I have edited narrative style videos (mock commercials and short films), motion graphics videos (tv show bumpers), and other random videos I’ve edited for friends’ projects. Some of these I also directed. I also snuck in some mock radio advertisements I edited for class.
2021
Happy Donghyun Day - A fan edit I made for a KPOP idol. It seems funny, but I really did put a lot of effort into this.
Donghyun’s Greatest Hits Spotify Playlist - Another fan edit, inspired by Spotify’s video preview feature.
Presenting GOLDEN CHILD - A fan edit for Golden Child’s 4th anniversary.
2019
IGP Entertainment Inc. Demo Reel - A short reel of IGP Entertainment’s works. All footage belong to them, I only collated the videos together.
IGP Entertainment Inc. Stunts & Rigging Reel - A collection of stunts and rigging footage shot by IGP Entertainment Inc.
2018
The Rising News - This is a 20-minute mock news show we did for our Broadcast Journalism class. Some of the segments were edited by other group mates of mine (like the nat package), but generally, I animated and stitched together this final cut.
“Alon” Trailer - This short film is probably my greatest work of both direction and narrative editing. But since I still intend to submit this film to festivals, please do check out the trailer for it by clicking on the link!
Manila Biennale Stand-Upper - This was for my Broadcast Journalism class, and I gotta admit that I really enjoyed being a reporter.
2017
“Locally’s New Summer Flavors!” Mock Radio Advertisement, Locally Galing, Galing Locally Campaign - This is part of my block’s submission for our course’s interclass competition, IMC Quest 2017 where we won first place.
CFC-FFL Promotional Video - I am a member of a Catholic youth group called CFC-YFL, and I was part of the creative team for an event called the South Area Youth Conference. I edited a bunch of video presentations that were shown at the event, and this was one of them.
Little Dreams Short Film - This was a stop motion short film me and my groupmates made for our Film Theories class. I directed and edited this one.
EdTech Digital Broadcasting Unit Station ID - This was the proposed station ID for UST EDBU when it was launched last year, 2017. I directed and edited the final cut.
