Blanche (1971)
"To love, but to take one's secret to the grave - that is the real art."
#Blanche#walerian borowczyk#french cinema#1971#films i done watched#Ligia Branice#michel simon#jacques perrin#Lawrence Trimble#Georges Wilson#Denise Péronne#Michel Delahaye#Jean Gras#Genevieve Graves#Stanley Barry#Guy Bonnafoux#Juliusz Slowacki#Utterly‚ hauntingly‚ desolately beautiful. A medieval tapestry come to life. Borowczyk presents a flat canvas of earthy‚ austere realism#But swirls it through with a sense of fairy tale fantasy. It's beautiful but it's morose: a quiet‚ desperate‚ sad thing of a film. It all#Feels quite hopeless and then just as soon as your hopes are raised they're dashed again. The cast are all excellent. Simon was near the#End of his life but he's as imperious and powerful as ever. Trimble is wonderful‚ a forlorn‚ broken man quite literally sick with love#And Branice.... She's perfect. If there is a flaw here it's that this is a film which seems to set up the question 'what is the role of a#Woman in a society that is built in every sense against her'. Blanche is the title character but she is utterly powerless‚ denied agency‚ a#Voice‚ trust. She is described as saintly and idolised by the men in her society; but they idolise her body‚ and it's as an object that she#Is discussed‚ dissected‚ appraised. She's a passenger in her own narrative‚ dragged onward by the men around her; men that she has cause to#Fear but upon whom she must also depend for her own safety. Borowczyk allows space for all this to grow but then never really comments on#It. Blanche ends as powerless as she begins‚ and the final tragedy seems to be a shared one‚ when it is really hers alone.#The comparison between the Blanches of his medieval fantasy and the Blanches of 1971 was there for the grabbing too but again it's left to#Dangle; a dissatisfying and frustrating aspect of an otherwise beautifully intricate dolls house of a film
