Limits of well. ....everything.
I got interested in a forum on ASR about what older gear is still good.
I tripped over it as I saw some treasure in a local used equipment store and wanted more opinions. So I looked on the internoise and this came up.
I went through several pages and was fascinated by two things. One of course was the idea of what is good. The other was conflict about how you determine it. And all these guys are measurement people.
ASR is all about measurements. I think they are honest and reliable.
I also think they can get tied up in the trivial. If one device measures just a wee bit better than another is it really better. I find myself thinking does it sound better? Oh dear I am one of "those" people?
There is an extended dialog in there where two people argue about noise and class D and on and on. Is anything agreed? Nope. My least favorite phrase appears "agree to disagree." Even then it did not stop.
In the grossest sense there is no STATE OF THE ART. Is anything perfect? NO! How close is the best to perfect? Define perfect! Oh dear bring out the weapons.
One thing ASR makes plain is that every Tube Amp they have tested ranks very poorly. (If I am wrong please tell me) This is not surprising in that vacuum tube audio uses 1% or even 2% distortion to rate performance while current solid state devices are far less. Less by a factor of a hundred or even more.
Yet many audiophiles will consider only vacuum tube amplifiers as good and better.
Conflict and contradiction.
It is not even a question of test instruments do not measure what people hear. They certainly do. It is what we like to hear clean sound? How clean?
I had hopes that forum thread would lead to a few suggestions of old gear that was good. Good as in good enough to enjoy. Several nominations of course. Good enough to not really compromise the performance with, I am not sure what.
Navigation through the weeds in that forum I came out with reliability being good. Many older Japanese products were good. Many old American products were good. Most I am familiar with. Those that were still around are obviously reliable because they are still around.
How good is good enough? My old Franken-Amp is old and does a lot of things well. Yes it is tweaked. I think it is good enough. My ARC tube amp is high end as judged by Golden Ears back in the day and is really close in most ways to the F-A. Is good enough by 1990s standards still good enough?
Arguably (Hell I said this months ago) every method and topology dates back many decades. All that is happened in the last 50 years is copying, or refinement and perhaps better semiconductors. For all that was a line passed years ago that actually is good enough?
I think so.
Why buy new very expensive stuff when old stuff is good enough.
I still hold that I have not heard a better system than the one in my house. Of course what is better?
