How much do you know about Dien Bien Phu? I, as a typical American, know almost nothing except that it was a major French disaster, that eventually led to the American Vietnam war. However, i fell into a YoutTube rabbit hole, and it changed my perspective. I think it was one of the most impressive marvels of combat logistics, planning, and ingenuity in military history.
The French made some major blunders, but i think it's important to un derstand why they put a major airstrip in a valley surrounded by mountains: The French Foreign Legion considered it a complete impossibility that the Vietnamese could put artillery on the mountains. From that persepctive, the fortress at Dien Bien Phu was an amazing idea. A well-supplied forward air base that is basically impregnable allows you to completely dominant the war. The French could have operated with impunity. The battle-hardened French military and engineers were absolutely certain that no one could move artillery up to the rim of the bowl - at least without modern equipment. Its not like these were guys fresh out of the academy, these dudes built the Maginot line, they fought a full-scale modern war, they were phenomenal engineers. They climbed the Alps, the fought in Fortress Europa. They knew their business. They were safe in their elevated bowl.
Instead, those hard little fuckers in the pajamas pulled post-WW2 field artillery pieces and modern AA batteries up mountains with their bare hands and some effing ropes. They did the impossible. They proved, once again, that wars are won by planning, logistics, and hard fucking work. Bravery is great. Genius is great. Strategic and tactical mastery of excellent skills. But being a good logistician and being willing to dig forever will win more wars than anything.
That, and SPEED. The moment the French extended themselves too far, the Viet Minh were ready. They exploited the advantage lighting fast.
I am just so impressed by the Viet Minh achievement at Dien Bien Phu, and would love to find more information on their side of things. Just incredible what they did.
Sounds like you know more than me! You can just make this your own reblog you know, no need to bury your essay in the illusion of the ask ^_^ We like essays here!
For my own thoughts I know some, I guess I can share a few:
-Okay, bear with me; there is a Malcom Gladwell essay about the Full Court Press strategy in college basketball from 2009 (absolutely *chef kiss* start here) which digs into the "effort vs ability" paradigm. Now Gladwell is as always full of shit, don't listen to him on the object level question of how effective the FCP strat is, but the paradigm is a good theoretical tool - that in a lot of places you don't expect, effort can substitute for a lack of ability and close disparities. In the essay he discusses T. E. Lawrence's attack on the city of Aqaba (which he overly credits to Lawrence over Auda Abu Tayi or the other British advisor, Stewart Newcombe, but w/e), which was heavily defended on the coast but its artillery batteries didn't cover the desert in the rear - why would it, its hundreds of miles of barren wasteland. The insight of the Arab Revolt forces barely counts as an insight until you see it the right way - just cross it anyway! The enemy has a greater 'ability' in firepower, which can cover a dozen approaches, but not all of them - so if you ignore the gigantic human cost of crossing the desert, you obviously attack the weak point. They just didn't conceive of enemy willing to essentially suffer that much, the Arab Revolt's true strength was apply effort in quantities the Ottomans were unwilling to consider. Dien Bien Phu is the same - the French were essentially correct that hand-dragging artillery pieces into the mountain ridges was virtually impossible, the British or the Chinese wouldn't have done it. Insurgencies are built on the principle of effort overcoming ability, though - if they had the ability they wouldn't be the insurgency. These are the gaps that insurgencies hunt for, where the enemy treats you like a 'normal' army and assumes you wont simply grind away at the problem. Dien Bien Phu is the moment where that gap emerged, and the Vietminh were ready for it.
-The other point is to downplay this a bit, in that whenever you see a stellar victory you should always look at the other perspective; if it happened, maybe it wasn't that low odds. The French in Vietnam were a classic case of War Without Strategy - after WW2 France was a broken state being built from the ground up, America had ruthlessly pushed the Western European powers into paring back their imperial ambitions, and the domestic populace was sketchy in its support at best. France had set up the State of Vietnam as a quasi-free nation, something they did have hopes for in the 1940's but by 1954 its lack of viability was on the wall, yet France could not diplomatically admit to that fact. As such into the 1950's France had minimal strategy - French commanders were simply aiming to not-lose and save face for their eventual return to Europe.
Individual ideas would bubble up - like the idea behind Dien Bien Phu, baiting the Vietminh into taking huge casualties attacking it as part of the "hedgehog" strategy a la Na San in 1952. But notice how this...isn't a strategy? If *inflicting casualties* was gonna win France the war it would have been over 5 years ago. It has a hint of a strategy, sure, but in the main its an idea born of the fact that France was unwilling to commit the resources needed to actually have a chance of winning, but was unwilling to admit defeat, and was filling the gap with hail mary's.
The fact that the Vietminh had already fought a similar battle at Na San, lost, and was able to learn lessons for when France offered a repeat is telling; their victory is maybe not that surprising in this light. France could afford few defeats and had no capacity to end the war, the Vietnamese could afford endless defeats and were bent on fighting for the long haul. Of course such a grind would eventually, probabilistically, tip in Vietnam's favour and hand them the victory they needed; in a sense France was hoping for just that, an excuse to withdraw. Dien Bien Phu is the logical culmination of the politico-strategic balance of the two forces.

If this story makes me smile when I think of Jerry O’Malley and Ed Payne, as I knew them personally growing up with their daughters, was a frequent guest at their homes .
As told by Paul F Crickmore in his book Lockheed SR-71 Operations in the Far East, having deployed ‘976’ to Kadena air base, on the Japanese island of Okinawa, 11 days earlier, Maj Jerry O’Malley and Capt Ed Payne duly flew the same aircraft on the Senior Crown (codename for the SR-71 programme) operational debut. They coasted in on a heading of 284 degrees at 78,000 ft (23,774 m) and Mach 3.17, passing over Haiphong. In just 12 minutes they had overflown Hanoi – then the most highly defended city on earth – with impunity, the jet’s sensors recording dozens of high-value targets, before exiting hostile airspace in the vicinity of Dien Bien Phu. Decelerating and descending over Thailand, the crew rendezvoused with several KC-135Q tankers and took on 80,000 lbs of JP-7 from two of them. With fuel in the tanks, Maj O’Malley quickly reached the SR-71’s optimum speed and altitude and headed back over North Vietnam, before plotting a course for ‘home-plate’ – Kadena air base, on Okinawa.
On contact with Kadena, Approach Control, they were dismayed to find that the base was completely ‘fogged in’. The pilot talked to the tower controller and then to Col Charlie Minter, who agreed to allow them to attempt a low visibility approach for a visual landing.
O’Malley never saw the runway, and pushed the throttles forward to go back ‘upstairs’ to contemplate further options. Low on fuel, he called for the standby tanker that had been launched earlier just in case the weather at Kadena turned nasty. After link-up, he took on 25,000 lbs of fuel, while Payne copied a two-figure encoded number that told them the location of their divert airfield — Ku Kuan, on the island of Taiwan.
Two additional KC-135s were launched to accompany ‘976’ to Nationalist China, the SR-71 adopting a tanker call sign as the number `two’ aircraft in a three-ship formation. This deception was undertaken to hide the inter-island diversion from SlGINT monitors on the Chinese mainland. As they made their way `low and slow’ with the tankers, the destination airfield’s non-directional beacon returned. As they made their way `low and slow’ with the tankers, the destination airfield’s non-directional beacon returned the unexpected Morse Code identity signal of CCK. The tanker crew soon resolved this problem, however.
It turned out that Ku Kuan had recently been re-named Ching Chuan Kang!
O’Malley asked the CCK tower for permission to land, and made a straight-in visual approach at 175 knots, before performing a smooth touch-down. After clearing the runway and lining up behind the lead tanker, he sandwiched ‘976’ between two KC-135s as they taxied in. This unusual sight caused considerable confusion in the tower, particularly when one controller asked for the call-sign of ‘the little black aircraft between the two tankers, which had replied with a tanker call sign’. While Payne was talking to the tower people, O’Malley dialled up the radio frequency of the SAC Command Post that had recently opened on CCK. He asked for the aircraft to be ‘hangared’ (for security. A crowd of at least 500 Taiwanese gathered 15-deep along a 300-yard section of the fence, all of whom were fascinated to see such a futuristic jet standing on their airfield almost within touching distance. *Note years later, when General O’Malley was a PACAF Commander he found out that SR 71 pilot David Peters was having trouble finding a hangar for his SR 71. O’Malley made a phone call minutes later a hangar became available for Lt.Col Peters. I’m sure he was remembering this moment when he needed a hangar.. second and third photograph are of O’Malley and Payne. The last one is a Charles Minter.

Spoil Spores
A potentially fatal disease caused by the spores of the bacterium Bacillus anthracis, anthrax is often discussed for its potential as a sinister biological weapon. Yet typical infection routes are more mundane, through contact with contaminated water, soil, or infected animals. In particular, herbivores like cattle can ingest naturally-occurring spores in soil while grazing. Vaccines provide effective protection against infection, but spores can remain dormant in soil for several years, so livestock should be regularly vaccinated wherever anthrax was once present. In northern Vietnam, where domesticated water buffalo (Bubalus bubalis, pictured) are major hosts for B. anthracis, recent records show substantial overlap between anthrax cases in humans and livestock, while virtually all cases with sufficient information involved contact with sick or dead animals, or meat. More happily, fewer human cases were reported when livestock vaccination rates were high, demonstrating the importance of vaccination for protecting animals, humans and their livelihoods.

TOP TIPS FOR RIDING A MOTORBIKE IN VIETNAM
Tumblr media
Riding a Vietnam motorbike tours is a dream of many riders who have a great passion of riding around the world. However, to make the dream become true, they have to spend much time studying the necessary things for the trip. To help riders get closer to this dream, this article will be the useful guide to prepare for riding a motorbike in Vietnam, what will need and how should prepare, etc.
1st Step: Searching for the useful information for riding a motorbike in Vietnam
Searching for general information to make a plan of riding a motorbike in Vietnam is the first step you should do carefully because it affects on the whole program, the way of travel and the expense of the trip. So, with this step, you have to understand the basic information about culture, people and geography of our country. Which destinations you should visit? Do and Don’t in Vietnam etc.
Once riders get an overview of Vietnam and know where to go, what to do, riders can work out the dates, travel style and prepare the budget. Don’t have much time but still want peace of mind? Find out a Vietnam motorbike tour operator to arrange the ride is the good idea. However, that is not the way for real motorcyclists who want to explore and experience everything by them-self. For them, life is a journey not a destination so building a program, buying a motorbike then making the journey in their own way would be great.

3rd Step: Buying, renting or importing a motorbike to Vietnam? Which is a better choice?
You should buy or rent a Vietnam motorcycle tours or you should import your motorbike from your hometown to this country? It will be the matter that you should put into your consideration. So, what is the procedure for importing a used motorbike? Or where you can buy or rent a motorbike in Vietnam?  Should buy a new or old one? How much is it? There are a lot of questions that make you feel confused. And here is our advice:
Renting a motorbike in Vietnam
Renting a motorbike in Vietnam is very easy and convenient. Riders need only a copy of passport, pay for the rent and make a deposit for the bike. If riders want to rent a motorbike in Ho Chi Minh City, you can go to Pham Ngu Lao str., Cong Quynh str. in the District 1 where it has many bike for rent. Renting a motorbike in Hanoi is simpler and easier with tons of rental shops in Hanoi Old Quarter area.
The rental rate is depended on the kind, the quality of the motorbike, the length of rental and your bargaining power. If you need a scooter or semi automatic motorbike, riders only pay $7 to $10/day. For a dirt bike, it costs from $25/day for a Honda XR150 or $55/day for a Honda CRF250L. The longer rental term is, the lower rental rate is, and of course, also easily bargain with the lessor.
Buying A Motorbike in Vietnam
The huge disadvantage of renting is returning the bike after finishing the trip. It has no choice, riders have to come back to the rental shop to return the motorbike then get the deposit because all of rental shop has only office in big city. Renting a motorbike in Vietnam is very convenient in terms of procedures, but it is not suitable for a one-way trip in the country with the length of nearly 2,000km. Therefore, many riders have a consideration of buying a motorbike in Vietnam.
Vietnam is one of the countries with the highest number of motorcycles in the world, therefore the riders have no difficulty on buying a motorbike in Vietnam. However, to buy a suitable one with good quality, you should have a good knowledge in this field. If not, you will be overpaid or even get low quality bike. There are so many people who have to pay quite a lot of money but do not have a good motorbike.
The first step in buying a motorbike in Vietnam is to choose the most suitable kind of motorbike which is match with your riding skill and body. If you are not tall and do not have a good skill of controlling a manual bike, a second hand scooter or semi automatic motorbike for $300 is not a bad idea. However, if you are an experienced manual bike rider, and want to have a really fun and fabulous motorbike journey, spend your time and money to buy for yourself a dirt bike to have a true adventure. The price for a dirt bike is quite expensive, ranging from $2,500 to $8,000. Expensive, but you will get what you pay for.
If you still want a motorbike which is not too weak and you can afford, with many backpackers, Chinese Honda Win 110cc is an optimal choice. In Vietnam, you can go to the shops which are located in the Hanoi Old Quarter such as in Ta Hien, Dao Duy Tu, Luong Ngoc Quyen str., etc to buy old motorbikes which are maintained by the mechanics. However, you should check thoroughly if you do not want to buy a poor quality one. Besides, if you have time and want to save your money, you can buy the used motorbikes from other backpackers who have just finished their riding a motorbike in Vietnam and ready to through their bike with dirt-cheap price. The price of such a motorbike is only $100-$200, even cheaper. However, please think carefully because the quality of such motorbikes is not always good and we have to spend a lot of money to maintain them.
Importing a Motorcycle into Vietnam
Importing a Motorcycle into Vietnam from abroad must follow a very complicated process and cost significantly. Riders need the help of a travel agency to go through legal procedures in Vietnam. In our country, the reality of practicing is often much more complicated than what to be listed in the guiding documents and it may lead to long-lasting case that makes you miss your plans for riding a motorbike in Vietnam.
According to the decree No.152/2013/ND-CP on management of motor vehicles brought into Vietnam by foreign tourists which has been taken into effect since December 25th 2013, foreign travelers can bring foreign vehicles into Vietnam for tourism purposes for not over 30 days, and maximum 10 days in the case of extension. The travelers must prove that they have booked the motorcycle tour before and have travel itinerary arranged by Vietnamese travel agents or Vietnam-based tour operators.
The temporary motorbike importation into Vietnam for traveling purpose must be approved by Vietnam international travel agencies which will deal with all of approval procedures. To get the approval, the tourists must be foreigners, have passport or alternative other documents in more than 6 months valid from entry date; have visa complying with temporary residence in Vietnam law (except for visa exemption); and their registration number plates have finished in oversea.
Besides, the tourist has to prepare the necessary documents as below:
Valid certification about the safety of engineering for control or environment granted by authority officer in countries taking place the registration number plates.
When joining the traffic in Vietnam, tourists must obey the Vietnamese traffic law, bring all the above documents and must be leaded by local direct vehicles: motors or cars which arranged by Vietnam International Travel Agencies.

Description: In September 1962, when Martin Dockery landed in Saigon, he was a young, determined, idealistic U.S. Army first lieutenant convinced of America’s imminent victory in Vietnam. While most of the twelve thousand U.S. military advisors in-country at the time filled support positions in Saigon and other major cities, Dockery was one of a handful of advisors assigned to Army of the Republic of Vietnam (ARVN) combat units. For eight months Dockery lived and fought in the heart of the Mekong Delta with an ARVN infantry battalion on missions and operations that often lasted several days. And for most of that time, whether tramping through the steaming, leech-infested jungle, hiking across canals, or engaging in sudden firefights, Dockery was the only American soldier with the unit. Dockery’s solitary assignment with ARVN during the infancy of U.S. involvement in Southeast Asia afforded him an understanding of Vietnam far more profound than most other Americans. Lost in Translation is his riveting account of the largely overlooked role of American combat advisors in the war. As he vividly evokes the sounds, smells, and vistas of the country and its people, Dockery depicts an army poorly trained, incompetent, and unwilling to fight for a government every bit as corrupt as that of the French colonial empire it replaced. Yet even worse than his daily fare of isolation, frustration, and danger was Dockery’s growing conviction that the advisory program was doomed. Though these dedicated, highly motivated advisors would do their best and persevere under the most trying circumstances, they would not succeed. The author’s eyewitness testimony provides inescapable evidence that as early as 1962 the writing was already on the wall concerning the outcome of the Vietnam War. Although it would take U.S. leaders more than a decade to divine what the young officer learned in a single year, Dockery’s personal and penetrating analysis of the war—which he presented in a lecture at a Special Forces facility in Germany one week after his tour in Vietnam ended—proved chillingly accurate. Those who send soldiers to war should consider the realities and truths within these pages.

TOP TALLEST SKYSCRAPER (BUILDINGS) IN VIETNAM 2023
With the development of economy and society, the rapid urbanization speed has more and more skyscrapers, becoming symbols for big cities as well as the whole country. This is evident in the large fluctuations in the list of tallest buildings in Vietnam.
After 8 years of holding the top position in terms of height, the Keangnam Hanoi Landmark Tower building had to “give up” the top position to Landmark 81 in Ho Chi Minh City. Swift Airborne Operation ends in Success for the French!!
A report from the British Broadcasting Corporation (22th Nov 1953):
The Indochina War has lasted some 7 years and counting ever since its start back in December 1946 with no clear winner in sight. This has come at the devastating cost of significant bloodshed experienced by the French expeditionary forces, Viet Minh battling for control over the very future of the region with the suffering of civilians made abundantly clear. This might just change with the recent surprising developments regarding the city of Dien Bien Phu.
The latest reports coming in have stated that the French had launched a swift and massive airborne operation, codenamed Operation Castor, that saw French Airborne forces secure an airstrip and fortify the region into an outpost in a matter of two days. Clearly, the French are showing their determination to hold onto Indochina as their colony.
As we now await the responses by the Viet Minh, the world watches on with bated breath.
