Tutorial: Symmetry
Chapter 3, starting with Exercise 2: Symmetry With Passive Negative Space, follow through to Exercise 7.
https://openoregon.pressbooks.pub/digitalfoundations/part/chapter-3/
If you know Illustrator and speed through the exercise, make an advanced figure and ground composition. Here are two prompts: Choose one simple object, like a square, a circle, or a triangle. Create a series of six square compositions in which you experiment with the way your object (a figure) changes perceptually in relation to its ground. Alternate: Create a series of six square compositions in which you experiment with Josef Albers' interest in fluctuating figure and ground patterns. Can you make what Albers called the negative or the subtractive elements active? Check out this article: http://www.blackmountainstudiesjournal.org/wp/?page_id=48 and look up "Greek Meander" with an image search for an illustration.

Tutorial: Illustrator
Digital Foundations, Chapters 1 and 3.
https://openoregon.pressbooks.pub/digitalfoundations/part/chapter-1-the-metaphor-of-using-graphics-applications/
For Chapter 1, starting with Exercise 3: Creating a Dynamic Composition, you can follow the tutorial with the Egon Schiele image of "The Poet," or you can use one of the Gestalt images in our Drive folder titled "Work Files" Drive > NYU Design 2 Work Files > Dynamic Composition Tutorial > Gestalt Images. You should spend about 20-25 minutes on this. If you know Illustrator well, use your time to exaggerate Gestalt principals, or create two competing compositions, based on the same foundation image, that highlight distinct formal ideas. For example, you might want to turn the image from the Sistine Chapel into a pattern with repetition and variation, or perhaps change the colors of the Monument Valley screenshot to change the focal point.
