A tale of Dirkhan in the Desert
SULA’S SONG : Part 70 : WORK IN PROGRESS
World of Sea
PRINCESS ROWAN
Tales of Sir Neva Mar
About THE MERCHANT'S CURSE! he observed :
I am curious as to the idea of counterfeit coins in this setting. I imagine that since they are gold and silver the coins' worth would be determined by their weight. If so, why would counterfeiting be a problem? Perhaps weight is strictly regulated by the particular dies used by the local government to prevent underweight coins? I am very intrigued.
Both gold and silver are easily adulterated by other cheap metals like copper and still retain their appearance as gold or silver. They can be up to over fifty percent base metals in silver and with gold the situation is even worse. It can be up to 80% base metal. The counterfeiter pocketing the gold and silver not in his coins. The other issue is simply economic. Too many debased coins in circulation can ruin or weaken an economy.
of SULA’S SONG he noticed :
Picking off the watchers before they raise alarm by appearing to be small and harmless until it is too late.
Ingenious and devious. I love it!
You are so right. By the time that you can see the Avenger clearly, she don't look harmless at all! Something about that monster catapult gives her away. Of course by the time that you can see that, it is too late to get away for nearly all boats on Sea.
of PRINCESS ROWAN he thought :
You know, if not for Sir Neva's very (unusually for the time) open mind, he likely would have never been seen again. Oh, I do hope that her idiot father TRIES to enter these lands to take some form of revenge. I believe that many, many dragons will take offense to that!
That last is true, but it sadly would not actually happen. The folks thereabouts are VERY well aware of the problems that can follow upsetting not merely one, but many dragons! Truth be told, Rowan's father actually does love her, but is caught in the web of the social rules that govern Royal behavior.

About IN THE DESERT he observed :
Beware of your wording when making deals with gods. They love to make sure you get EXACTLY what you ask for!
Well, actually, Uman did not know that he was dealing with a god when he mad the basic offer and, to be fair, Skrald Iden in no way cheated him. To Uman's credit, he kept his part too, and did guide others to his temple hidden in the desert . . . For a modest fee, of course. He did make out pretty will on the whole deal.
Why would he bother? He has dealt with not only the whole Nine True Gods, but enough of the lesser gods to know better than to break a promise to any of them.

Return to Dirkhan in the Desert
About THE LOTTERY he observed :
"Luck go with you!" Ah yes, she certainly did! I do hope that Ahkin will give generously at the temple of the goddess of luck in return for his good fortune! Hopefully she will be well pleased...
Come to think of it, though... Was that the goddess of luck, or the goddess of kharma? XD
The two may be considered as one. What is certain is that she is one of the True Gods. Her temple is distinguished by its absence. There is always a place for her temple wherever the Temples of the Eight are built but the space for hers is always empty. She has no priests but MANY worshipers! It is considered as worship to hold games of chance where her temple would be . . . and WOE BETIDE any who try to cheat at a game held there.

Return to Dirkhan in the Desert
About THE HOLY DAY he observed :
If you're in a world with active gods and you choose to worship one, do it properly! They take that kind of thing VERY seriously! XD
It is worse when they DON'T! I mean, seeing a follower screw up like Skor did and playing a prank on him, just to remind him who he follows and, incidentally, remind others that proper activities are a good idea! Skor returned to his usual self at the end of Ranton's Holy Day.
Of course there were a few details that needed sorting out. Like following up a neat rat hole and returning to his normal self in a cell of Magistrate Jumpar's jail! Without his clothes. I mean, after all, Ranton is the God of Theft and general disasters.

About THE  GOD’S FANGS he observed :
Ah, I remember and do truly love this tale. Corruption in government and religion both turned on their heads and used against them! Truly a lesson I wish that more here in the real world would learn!
True indeed! Not to mention dealing with security issues! That was actually inspired by a person long ago, who commented, "Their site security is so bad that my dog could get in as an administrator."

About Carnelian Carvings, both the poem and the story that it inspired.
Tumblr media
@nevermord READ, LIKED and
REBLOGGED
Carnelian Carvings, both the poem
and the story that it inspired, both set
in DIRKHAN IN THE DESERT
of the poem he said this :
Oooo, I remember the story that was based on this one! Merchants getting what they deserved!
Specifically greedy and evil ones!
of the story he said this :
You know, given that the merchants seemed to be the lifeblood of this place, I often wonder how Derkhan-in-the-Desert survived this bout of vengeance!
It was anemic for a while but Dirkhan is a caravan crossroads for the whole of the desert of Skrald Iden, having the only water in the central part of the desert.
Was vengeance taken? Yes. Did the merchant princes learn anything? Not really.
