Andreas Kostenberger & Michael Kruger's recent work on Christian origins actually had me asking why they focused so much on W. Bauer's original thesis and B. Ehrman's later reformulation, as if debunking the origin and its most recent popularization is enough to actually overturn the myriad of scholarly work that developed in between.

More so, the binary framing which K & K took (orthodoxy vs heresy) falls into a false dichotomy having ignored discussions about another equally important variable -'#heterodoxy' (which they didn't address nor discuss in their book). I think, this unnecessary polarization had them ignore the line of work taken by scholars such as Dr. Andrew Walls and former archbishop of Canterbury, Rowan Williàms, regarding the viability of diverse expressions of Christian beliefs centering on the risen Christ. Williams put it well when he observed that diversity was equated to heresy only when the capacity to persecute and outlaw dissenting perspectives were put firmly in place (see his magnum opus, 'Arius: Tradition and Heresy,' SPCK: 2001).

I think, K & K have pressed their case (and cause) a bit too much so that they can push for their preoccupation with 'singular' orthodoxy in the early church which led them to downplay the glaring diversity in the early church. It seems to me that their arguments are shaped more by their fear of plurality, indifference to fluidity, disdain for #postmodernism, in general, rather than an earnest appraisal of NT scholarship.

I'd rather take the conclusion made by NT scholar James DG Dunn when he said, "We dishonor the unique centrality of Christ when we demand a larger unity and refuse to acknowledge the diversity through which the commitment to Christ can be expressed."

For Dunn, the #unity that exists in the early church is better understood this way, "a unity that consists and is possible only because the members of body are all different and have different functions; that is, a unity that is NOT a unity of sameness, not a unity threatened by differences, but a unity that can only function as such by reason of such differences; a unity that involves recognition of and living out a mutual interdependence by each on the other; a unity that can only thrive by integrated and co-ordinated #diversity" (Unity and Diversity in the NT, 3rd Ed.).

In other words, if you want to establish the unity of the early church, it cannot come by disparaging the significant diversity that exists among the different Christian communities of the 1st-2nd century (as K & K did in their book). Instead you do it by upholding it and celebrating the texture such a diversity adds to understanding the person of Jesus.
