Dope Skum Invoke “Folk Magic” in Fuzzy New Burner
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Poster by Novendrika Setyawan Pratama
When I lived in the South as a child, I remember fondly the mesmerizing sounds of the cicada on balmy summer evenings in rural East Texas. Their chorus surrounded us on walks through the neighboring pasture. And every so often I'd see one up close, after they had mated and fallen to the ground.
It is said cicadas symbolize a new beginning, and it's easy to see why. Once born, these mysterious insects fall from their tree branches and burrow into the ground where they feast on the roots for some thirteen to even seventeen years. They are buried in one form and then rise from the underground to fly away, reborn a new creature.
Chattanooga's DOPE SKUM summon the cicada's cry as their latest track begins. In fact, the cymbals even start to sound like cicadas as the song goes on. Guitar strings strum ambiently and percussion taps ritualistically. Then all three musicians emerge for a swampy blues riff, the only lyrics being: "Folk Magic."
Frontman/guitarist Cody Landress-Gibson gives us the dowlow:
Growing up in a small rural town in Appalachia, there were always older folks in town that could help remedy illnesses with herbs and fauna of the region. Once when I was a child, I had a wart on my finger that wouldn't go away. My mother took me to a local elder, who had taken a wart off her when she was younger.
When I went to see the man for my wart he rubbed some sort of small stick on the wart, whispered some words under his breath, and then told me to not think about or mess with the wart for a week. I'm not saying it's magic, but low and behold, a week later the wart had gone completely and there are no remnants of the wart on my finger. Maybe it would have gone away naturally, but I like to think there was something supernatural going on.
This story is similar to other stories that come from Appalachia and the surrounding areas of granny witches or granny witchcraft being used to cure or alleviate ailments of the community. It was this experience and the tales of others that influenced naming the song "Folk Magic" and incorporating some of the sounds you hear on the track. Real or not, I wanted to pay homage to the granny witches of new and old for bringing healing and peace to the foothills and mountains.
Hell yeah. Let's give it a listen. This is the Doomed & Stoned world premiere.

19. Faceless Stalker/Hulk - Pathfinder, PF2E
Tumblr media
There is an ancient evil that stirs beneath the oceans and in the deep aquatic dark of the many worlds of D&D, one that will only continue to be spoken about in the future and come to this list some day.  But for now it lurks beneath the surf, with those in power believing them to be dead or scheming.  And while these creatures are certainly always a valid threat, on occasion it serves better to have creatures that can break the veil of being ancient and beyond approach, that can walk amidst those of this world, and be the schemers amongst men.  Or sometimes, to simply bear the scars of their creators, and make their own bizarre futures in a world pitted against them.
There are many dozens of creations and minions to the aboleth or alghollthu that have appeared through several different editions, and I have searched throughout to find one that might be a suitable harbinger, zealot, or explorative devotee to their cause.  The skum are far too simple and dull, the chuul not quite versatile enough, the cloakers have a lore that has become their own and only meets with theirs in some variants, and the deep walker simply doesn’t have enough lore.  The one that stands above the rest however, with the intellect, versatility, determination, and lore to carry both the weight of themselves and the legacy of the aboleth, are the faceless stalkers, or as I will continue to call them by their proper title, the ugothol.
Full disclosure, I love the ugothol.  That is all.  I’ll continue now.  As a basic structural analysis, the ugothol is a doppelganger that goes a step down in terms of its abilities mainly because it needs a long time to manifest a new disguise and this causes it pain, though apparently not enough to bother it much.  It does gain greater benefits from a surprise attack however and gains a couple added benefits including an additional bonus against spells or abilities that deal with senses on account of not having a face, some limited damage reduction, a very slow blood drain ability, and the constant ability to know and speak all languages which lets it bypass the will save doppelgangers need to work with to become an effective information gatherer.  This still leaves them with a fairly manageable canvas of CR 4 for further classing or advancing.  It also has a singular variant called the faceless hulk for disguising as large sentient creatures, which doppelfangers can’t manage, and this larger form gains the additional function to expand like a sponge and push people away.  I know.  Pretty dope right.  Sponge boi.
Naturally dwelling in swamps in the absence of their old master, the ugothols can set out on a variety of wide reaching goals either for themselves or this long lasting connection, something which they follow more ardently than any other allgholthu creation.  Crafted initially to infiltrate humanoid settlements on behalf of their alghollthu masters, many also now remain scattered in secret communes across the world.  Even still their is still a call within many of them to plant seeds for the return of the ocean and to deconstruct governmental bodies from the inside out.  All the while, the ugothol subsist on the blood of victims, which they will often leave conscious but helpless to witness their own slow demise.  This does leave them vulnerable to one telltale sign of their trickery though, as they cannot digest solid food matter, regardless of the disguise they take.
Their is one very specific way however in which the ugothol differentiate from their masters and that is found in their approach to religion.  Where aboleth are largely atheistic, or at least not revering of any God, but rather elder evils, the ugothol seek the practice of faith whether they retain or are repulsed by their following of the alghollthu.  This sense of attempted individuality is a unique quality that could link into many separate paths for them, though admittedly many of the gods they choose to adher to are Chaotic Evil.
There are so many ways that a big bad ugothol can play into your campaign, either by attempting to bring back its masters from its ancient slumber, distinguish itself from its creators, continuing sowing discord on their behalf, or forming a cult to some depraved god or entity.  Even any plot you could consider a doppelganger for, you may also think to consider an ugothol first as their disguises allow them to basically inhabit any niche or story of your game.

Tennessee’s DOPE SKUM Drops 4/20 EP ‘Gutter South’
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
We once again greet DOPE SKUM in the heat of summer, the chicada's growl prefacing the rough 'n' tumble Chattanooga trio's "Folk Magic," which starts the new EP, 'Gutter South' (2023).
The band's previous EP (reviewed here) introduced us to the band's vibrant, humid, and grimacing brand of stoner-doom. Now Dope Skum doubles down on dank with five more songs. We gave you a listen and talked at length about the opening track, which was revealed as a single back in November (read review).
A banjo and guitar interlude separates it from the tracks that follow. The deep south and religion going hand in hand, it was not entirely surprising to hear a voice-over quoting Jesus Christ's fiery words of doom and wonder from the Gospel of Mark. This song serves not only as interlude, but prelude to the damning "Feast of Snakes" which follows and further elucidates the sentiment, inviting listeners to "kill your ego." "Belly Lint" is a lumbering sludge beast, of the same ilk as Bongzilla and Weedeater, while final number "The Cycle" hurries the pace with swampy doom meets jazz-punk and quasi-tribal undertones.
Mark your calendars for April 21st, when Dope Skum's Gutter South drops on all major streaming platforms (get it here).

Gutter South by Dope Skum
SOME BUZZ
Chattanooga sludge band, Dope Skum, is back with their highly anticipated sophomore EP, Gutter South, set to release on April 21, 2023. The five-track album showcases the band’s evolution, highlighting a shift in direction and sound. This release is bound to take their followers and fans of the sludge, grunge, and stoner metal genres on a trip down south with its fuzz-laden, groove-oriented, heavy, yet dynamic songs.
Written with a new line-up featuring Cody Landress-Gibson (guitar/vocals) and Scott Keil (drums), Gutter South builds on Dope Skum’s solid foundation, staying true to their roots while offering a fresh perspective on their sound. The EP’s first single, “Folk Magic,” was released in November 2022, paying homage to Appalachian tradition and granny witches, folk healers known in the mountains to cure ailments with herbalism and home remedies.
The single received praise from several heavy music-oriented blogs, including Doomed & Stoned, Sleeping Village, and Outlaws of The Sun. The second single, “Belly Lint,” to be released on March 10, 2023, takes a different approach, tackling addiction and the resilience of the human spirit.
Gutter South is a testament to Dope Skum’s growth and versatility. With a unique blend of old-time influences, as seen in the interlude track, and heavy sludge, the EP marks a significant milestone in the band’s journey. While holding on to and acknowledging their roots in their debut EP Tanasi, Gutter South captures a fresh new spin on their sound and brand of sludge. Gutter South is the next chapter of Dope Skum.

Chattanooga’s Dope Skum Drop Gritty First Spin
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
Stompin' southern stoner riffs and great big beats collide with punkish vocals in 'Tanasi' (2021). It's the debut EP from Chattanooga's DOPE SKUM. These guys know it's about to get hot as we transition from winter to spring and on into summer, too. Oh those muggy days in Tennessee! What I miss most about spending time in the Deep South are the cicada at sunset, the smell of honeysuckle during evening strolls, and those damned thunderstorms -- the kind that loom large and loud and'll put the fear of Zeus right in ya.
So new that they're not yet in the oft-referenced Encyclopaedia Metallum, Dope Skum attracted my attention earlier this month when we met on Instagram -- a platform I avoided for years, but have finally come to embrace, if for no better reason than these kinds of spontaneous encounters. They're another child born of the Great Lockdown, a two-piecer with Cody Landress-Gibson on guitar and voice and James Silber on drums. Like many of the duos we've visited recently in this humble rag, Dope Skum bring impressive heft that could easily fool the common bystander into believing they're dang near twice the size.
Tumblr media
Cody Landress-Gibson of Dope Skum
Drawn together by their affinity for punk rock and the heaviest of metal, Dope Skum have a distinctive, if eccentric sound that kinda reminds me of Portland's LáGoon, at least in the crooning department. If you look at the history of sludge metal, bands of this kind typically start out as lo-fi punk or thrash and just get slower, meaner, deeper, and heavier over time (I'm thinking of an outfit just one state over, NC's Buzzov*en).
Dope Skum describe their sound as "nastier than an old timer's moonshine mash," which made me wince. Standing on a "rock-solid foundation of sludgy stoner metal with a notable punky inflection" the band is influenced by the likes of Weedeater, Iron Monkey, Eyehategod, and Toke. This is rude, crude, raucous terrain we're entering, people. And I'm sure the guys are just itching like an ankle full of chiggers to take the act to the stage, if they haven't gotten busted for an illegal house show by now.
Tumblr media
James Silber of Dope Skum
'Tanasi' (2021) is their 5-track debut, and while trying to look up the meaning of the word -- temporarily mistaking it for the Japanese "Tansai" (which I thought might be a reference to some to some "lightly colored" strain of weed) -- it finally hit me that Tanasi might be referring how folks generations deep in Chattanooga pronounce Tennessee, with characteristic Southern drawl. As if the state-shaped logo on the album cover wasn't clue enough. Truth be told, Tanasi is actually the Native American/Cherokee word that Tennessee is derived from.
Dope Skum are only happy to let the unique character of their surroundings and its fascinating, tangled history leak into the songcraft too, which the guys quip, "recalls simplistic fiddle tunes of yore." They go on describe their first opus to us:
Exuding a gritty DIY ethos and an anti-establishment attitude, 'Tanasi' is deliberately rough around the edges, and doesn’t play by any particular set of rules. There is no ulterior motive, no grand artistic vision. Dope Skum simply play engaging music that appeals to their interests and their roots.
I can definitely get behind that. If you like riffs that can really rumble, honest lyrics delivered with vocals that sting like an onary hornet's nest, and rhythms that swing wide and heavy with stomping Southern swagger, you'll be saying Tanasi in no time! "We wanted to try and create something that was southern, punky, and sludgy," the band concludes. "I think we accomplished that."
Look for the EP to drop this weekend in digital format. I'm sure if you guys dig it, 'twill find its way to a suitable label for a physical release in the near future. I'm currently stuck on a loop between "Anxiety" and "Chickamauga" as my tracks of choice. Doomed & Stoned is pleased to give you a first listen to Dope Skum's Tanasi and let you find a few favs of your own.
Give ear...
Tanasi EP by Dope Skum
Dope Skum Take Us On Tour Of 'Tanasi'
Tumblr media
How did Dope Skum become a thing and what tools did you use to create 'Tanasi' (2021)?
Dope Skum started in late-2020 with myself, Cody Landress-Gibson, on guitar and James Silber on drums. Our gear really isn't anything to write home about. On the EP, I played a Harley Benton DC Junior with a single P90 pickup running through a Rat ProCo, Orange Fur Coat Fuzz, and EarthQuaker Devices Ghost Echo at times into a Marshall MG50CFX. James plays a Yamaha drum set with PA Meinl Classics cymbals. It's pretty "working class" gear, nothing too fancy.
What's the story behind the new record?
James and I started jamming and both had a pretty solid idea of the sound we were going for. We wanted something in the same vein as Weedeater, but maintain the ability to throw in elements of different influences we have. I had already written some riffs, and we threw them together to what became the EP. We recorded, mixed, and mastered everything ourselves at my house/garage in Chattanooga.
We'd love a guided tour through the new EP. Can you give us insight into the themes explored in these five monster tracks?
Feast of Snakes: The title was inspired by a Harry Crews novel, but the song doesn't pull from the novel at all. It's essentially an anti-authoritarian song. Politicians, kings, people in power tend to be snakes in the grass. There are also some religious metaphors used, as well, throughout the song.
Anxiety: The idea behind this one lyrically and musically was to try and put that emotion/feeling into a musical context. It's why the lyrics don't start until the second time into the verse riff. You're waiting, and you know you need to act, but something is just holding you back -- you just feel kind of stuck.
Chickamauga: This one is all instrumental. I had written the main riff that is throughout the song one night and brought it to James at a practice. We really didn't know where to go with it, so for the EP we recorded it live and just let whatever came up get included on the EP. I named it "Chickamauga" after the second bloodiest battle in the Civil War that took place just south of Chattanooga. With the build-up in the song, it's kind of like a soldier waiting for the battle to take place, then the chaos, then silence either from surviving the melee or dying. It's probably one of the tracks that will stick out the most because it doesn't really fit the "genre."
The Levee: I wrote this song with the thought of losing someone you love, the death of a close partner or family member. That one person you feel like you can't live without. I also love the riffs in this song. They groove well and the ending riff is super fun to play.
Mountain Cur: The final track on the EP is essentially about a lone wolf or stray dog that roams the mountains and hills. The intention was to use it as a metaphor for loneliness. This dog is all alone and has no one. He's committing these acts of violence as cry out for help and companionship. Don't know if it comes across this way, but that was the intention! Also, at the beginning is audio from a scene in Lawless (2012), which is a film about the Bondurant brothers who were outlaws moonshiners in rural Virginia in the '20s during Prohibition.

Interview with Photography / videography duo “Reel Dope”
1. Who is reel dope , what is reel dope and when did the idea come about ?
Reel Dope is me (Joe Marchetti) and John Bechtold. We’re both photographers and videographers and we’ve both also been working on very similar work for a long time. We’re both really into hip hop and the culture as a whole so we were both shooting music videos and photos of musicians pretty often. We realized one day that we could accomplish a lot more together than we could on our own so we decided to start Reel Dope. We wanted it to be more than just a music video company though. Our goal was to do everything from making the music videos, the photos, promotion, covering events, making merch, and hopefully even throwing events in the near future. We only started it about three months ago so we still have a lot to do but we’re on our way.
2. In what ways have you guys noticed how your contributions have impacted the Rochester hip hop scene ?
I don’t know if we can say we’ve made a huge impact per say. People seem to really fuck with what were doing but it’s hard to build up a massive following quick in a smaller city. That being said we’re just gonna keep making dope videos and covering events and trying to put people on and continuing to grow. It’s really been one of the main goals from the start to just focus on putting dope people on. It’s much easier to grow together as a team than alone and that applies to anyone in the industry from the musicians to the producers to the videographer and photographers and event planners and anyone else you could think of. You can only do some much on your own, but when we come together and collaborate on something we can make something big, and that’s really what helps build a community.
3. Who’s been some of your favorite artist to work with ?
Honestly everyone we’ve worked with has been dope. Negus IRap, SacheeSB, MF Skum, KZA K Lee, Sha GBZ, L Nesu, and everyone involved in the Bring Your Own Beats series. Everyone’s been so much fun to work with and we’ve come up with a lot of cool ideas. Every project has taken a good bit of planning and pooling resources together so it’s been a fun ride so far.
4. What artist would you like to work with from Rochester or in the music industry in general?
In the industry in general it would be crazy to work with people like ASAP Rocky or Tyler mostly just because they both play such a large role in concepting and directing their videos that it would be a lot of fun to work with them. Would also be stoked to work with ProducerTrentTaylor, LUCKI, J.I.D., I could go on forever honestly. There’s too many crazy dope artists.
5. What do you guys have in store for the rest of 2018-2019?
Just grinding honestly. We’re just trying to keep working on videos and photos and putting people on. Our biggest short term goal for the next year or so is just to branch out of Rochester. There’s a lot of really great talent here but we’re hoping to make Reel Dope a global brand and getting out of Rochester is the first step.
6. What’s your overall goal with the reel dope brand ?
We envision creating a multimedia platform built on crowd fusion from different artists we work with. Our hope is that by bringing everyone to one place to watch content it will help shed light on other artists we work with and eventually help bring the whole scene up.
7. Can you see yourselves expanding outside of the hip hop realm and working with artist of different mediums ?
That’s a tough one honestly. We’re both big hip hop heads but we listen to a lot of different music and a lot of our videos could be applied to a lot of different genres. The trouble with that though is that it affects our brand image and our audience and I think we would lose sight of what we really are at the core. To grow the platform we envision we really need to focus on one genre, at least for now. Who knows what the future will hold.
8. Where can artist who want to work inquire about a shoot ?
Hit us up at:
IG: @reel_dope
Send us any tracks, concepts, or anything else you’re trying to work on.
