Battling Medical Gaslighting for Empowered Healthcare
Missouri Clinic Shines a Light on Patient Advocacy
A recent survey uncovered a staggering statistic: 71% of women have been told by a physician that their symptoms were merely imagined.”
— Dr. David Clark
Increasingly, women are being told that their health symptoms are simply “all in their head,” a disturbing trend known as medical gaslighting. Leading the charge against this insidious issue is Health+Plus, a holistic medicine provider pioneering an initiative focused on listening to patients, validating their experiences, and providing comprehensive evaluations.
Tumblr media
“Health+Plus firmly rejects this practice. It has no place in medicine,” he said. Instead, his facility insists on empowering patients, offering a platform where their concerns are taken seriously, and their symptoms thoroughly investigated.
“Your voice matters,” Dr Clark said. “We approach patient consultations with deep empathy, acknowledging the validity of symptoms and committing to understanding the discomfort they’re experiencing.”
A Chiropractic Internist [DABCI] and a Naturopath [NMD], Dr. Clark has been in private practice since 1975. People from all over the country began to hear good reports of Dr. Clark’s success in treating chronic illness with a natural approach began traveling to his little office in Oak Grove. Since 1999, he more than quadrupled the size of that office to accommodate the needs of his patients who seek a natural, caring health approach to their healthcare. Dr. Clark is dedicated to conducting comprehensive evaluations for every new patient, performing an array of medical tests to uncover the root causes of health problems. This thorough examination of the ‘whole person’ helps ensure that no potential health issue is overlooked.
“At Health+Plus, we understand that health problems can stem from a variety of factors, and they endeavor to address all possible underlying causes – from hormonal imbalances to harmful lifestyle choices,” Dr. Clark added. “The facility provides tailored recommendations based on our findings to help improve patients’ overall well-being. It starts, however, with listening and not being dismissive.”
While they cannot guarantee success in every case, Health+Plus underscores its commitment to taking every patient seriously.
“At Health+Plus, we greatly value the trust of our patients and strive to create a safe space where they can openly share their concerns,” says Melissa Abramovitz, APRN/FNP-BC, who collaborates closely with Dr. Clark in providing patient care. “The foundation of that trust is built on actively listening to our patients and taking their experiences seriously.”
“Gaslighting has to go,” Dr. Clark said.

Men In Christ Ministry hold 14th Annual MLK Jr Commemorative Breakfast at Stone Center
Tumblr media
Rev. Graylin Carlton, (above left) a Wilkes native, who is minister at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Walktertown, was among those who spoke during the Reflection of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. during Monday morning’s, annual tribute to King held at the Stone Center in North Wilkesboro. Also shown are his parents, mother, Perry, and father, Evon, who are Wilkes residents. The event is hosted and organized by Men in Christ Ministry. Record photo by Heather Dean

The morning’s message was clear - do your best to continue the love and compassion that gives way to change, in every aspect of your life every day.
The room was full at Men In Christ Ministry’s 14th annual Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Breakfast at the Stone Center in North Wilkesboro
Some came from as far away as Charlotte.
Rev. Winford Griffin, from Clarks Chapel Baptist Church in Statesville, said in the event’s opening prayer “Thank you Lord for this day that we have never seen and will never see again, and help us to do our best in your name.”
Dr. Rev Terry Hunt, from Life Center, in Lenoir read from Matthew Chapter 5, and admonished those in attendance to “keep in our hearts those that have gone before us.”
Brother Craig Tidline played the piano as the audience joined in singing Lift Every Voice and Sing, before breakfast was served.
After breakfast, Rev. Richard K. Watts from Rickards Chapel AME Zion welcomed the crowd. “We are here to reflect, not only on the man, but to reflect on his speeches, to reflect that today is a day is a day for change, inspired to be better, inspired to love, inspired to forgive, inspired to do justice, inspired to make all those dreams a reality.
Brother Kenneth Turner, from First Baptist Church, said “Just look at this crowd. We are so grateful to you. It was 24 degrees at my house this morning, and I’m sure it would have been a nice day to sleep in and stay home warm. But just look- as my daddy would have said, “who would have thunk it?” Thank you for coming out, and a special thank you to Wilkes Communications that donated $500 to go into our fund for those in need.” Turner then recognized North Wilkesboro Mayor, Robert Johnson, and Mark Byrd, Superintendent of Wilkes County Schools. The Men in Christ Ministry (MICM) presented Byrd with a check from the society and thanked him for taking care of the children in Wilkes. Turner said “We (MICM) are very passionate about the children of the world today. How we act as adults, and how we support the children and how we support the schools are our legacy.”
Byrd then thanked the MICM for the example they set for the kids, and he asked for the continued thoughts and prayers for the children and schools in of Wilkes County.
The Beulah Presbyterian Church Choir, led by Brother Craig Tidline, along with Rev. Steve Snipes from Wilkesboro Presbyterian Chapel, sang “Let it Start In Me” before the memorial ceremony. Brother Paul Robinson, from Rickards Chapel AME Zion led the memorial ceremony. He said “We are lucky and blessed to have three members who made it to 100. Sisters Gilreath and Barber, and Brother Howell…that’s what I call success! We need to sit with them and learn their wisdom. Things we now take for granted weren’t even invented yet. If you are lucky to have grandparents, great-grandparents, or just elders in your congregation- sit and talk with them, don’t let that wisdom be lost.” Last year’s memorial ceremony they called the names of members they had lost, but Robinson said they wanted to do it differently, and honor everyone, across denominations and the community. So he asked those who had lost someone to please stand and say their name aloud, and after all the names were spoken, he asked the crowd to stand with those grieving, and all took a moment of silent prayer and remembrance for them.
Ernest Coles, from Watco Cleaning, gave the MICM $500 in honor of his brother, Billy, who is a member, but was unwell and not able to attend the days ceremonies.
Reflections on Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., were by Rev. Graylin Carlton, Wilkes native, now at Oak Grove Missionary Baptist in Walkertown; Rev. William Fulp, Jr., Beulah Presbyterian Church in North Wilkesboro; Rev. Elliott Boston, Liberty Grove Baptist, in Taylorsville.
Carlton said “I put a lot of prayer into this- I didn’t even know where to start. I listened to and read every speech I could find. But his last one, on March 31, 1968, not knowing that he only had four days left on this earth, was called “Remaining Awake through a Great Revolution.” He used Rip Van Winkle as an example of staying aware of our challenges. When Rip Van Winkle awoke after a 20 year sleep, he realized that he had slept through a revolution. George Washington now replaced King George.
King challenged us to stay awake, even though our human instinct is to hit the snooze button on many social issues, to wait, to not say anything until someone else does. We need to remember that Jesus did not censor himself, he confronted injustice, he fought the status quo, and he started a revolution. It’s time to put our differences away, religious and otherwise, it’s time to cross boundaries and love and help one another. We must stay awake and accept our community challenges. In Matthew chapter 22, Jesus was asked “what is the greatest commandment?” We were told to LOVE. Love thy neighbor, all of them, the revolution is not over!”
Fulp said “It was the day after Bloody Sunday. King said “A man dies when he refuses to stand up for that which is right, for justice, when he refuses to take a stand for that which is true. Like Christ and Moses, King was spreading an unpopular message for his day. But we have to get over this notion that he did it for only one race- no, he did it for all- the underpaid, the poor, the woman, the children of all races. The definition of oppression is a prolonged cruel or unjust treatment. God only sees two races, his children, and those who are lost.
Complacency is a disease that is spreading now, through out lives and through the church, and it is as dangerous as being labeled a renegade.  We have gotten to the point that we don’t stand up for anything unless it affects us personally. Complacency is being lukewarm, and you know what Jesus said about that.  Psalms says that complacency is for fools. Complacency has no place in the Christian home or the Christian Church. We must walk in love, standing up for freedom, justice, truth, for all of our neighbors. When will you stand up?
Boston said “I listened to the memorial service of Dr Martin Luther King. And in it, you could hear someone shout “we’ve lost the last good one.” And that made me think: God is not asking us to be someone else. He is not asking us to be MLK. He is asking us to be our best that we can be and to keep doing good. Hate leads to fear, and we have fear because we don’t know each other. Kings sermon “A knock at midnight” was taken from Luke’s parable in chapter 11. King told us it was midnight in the social order, on the national order. . Friends, it is still midnight. I know that I must do my part to be practical, to live what I preach. And we can pray with confidence that he hears us. Keep praying and be patient, god will restore us.”
Brother Sonny Golden, Pleasant Hill Baptist Church, introduced keynote speaker, Steve Snipes, from Wilkesboro Presbyterian Chapel. He said “This crowd shows that our God is at work.”
Snipes said “The path of friendship is a long and winding road, and it is one I have enjoyed one step at a time. I look different than the other speakers up here, but I thank you for seeing me as a friend, allowing me to be a friend, I am humbled to stand before you It is one of the greatest honors given to me and I have been excited to speak. Thank you for your reflections on Dr. King.
“Dr King had a dream for our entire nation, but I want to ask you a question. Are we still dreaming? Are we still trying to do better or are we simply sitting and enjoying other work that came before us? Are we still passing the torch? As recipients of his hard work and martyrdom, are we still seeking to influence society, to seek the well being of life, justice and equality?
“I am richly blesses in more ways than I can count or acknowledge. Yet I was raised in a culture and conditioned to be a certain way. It wasn’t until my teen years that I learned the truth- I was a racist. I have been fighting every day since, and making amends for what I had been conditioned to be. We see it everyday, the elitist, the violent, the arrogant, and it’s easy not to see it in ourselves. We have to reset the mindset. We have to challenge ourselves, to be kind, in all of our conversations and activities. When we serve the least, we are demonstrating kindness and compassion, We must convince ourselves and others to be the best and most authentic versions of ourselves we can be.
“We need to confront the sad actions of the past and to acknowledge that it was wrong. We must commit to see all human beings as children of God. There were centuries of bad theology and that created a hierarchy; we must fight though the centuries of systematic injustice. We have turned that page of history without saying how wrong it was to attack humans with fire hoses, to bomb a Sunday school class, to kill innocent children...” Then, with tears in his eyes, Snipes said “I have no authority but my own, but I want to tell you I am sorry. I am so sorry for everything that happened. There was so much that we (white people) brought about and it was so wrong.”
“We have a new day, and a new future together through Christ. And maybe not everyone will agree with me, but I’m at the point that I don’t care. We can change others through Christ.
The event ended with the crowd singing “We Shall Overcome,” and the ending prayer by Rev. Michael Gillespie, from Denny Grove AME Zion Church.
-We must live together as brothers or perish together as fools.”
Martin Luther King, Jr.

Schilke, Kathryn Pearl 98 Oct. 21, 1918 Dec. 29, 2016 Kathryn "Grandma Kay" Schilke went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after an accident in her Beaverton home on Dec. 29, 2016.
She was 98 years old, still living independently in her own home, caring for her beautiful flower garden, driving and active in her church and neighborhood.
Born in Garfield Township, S.D. on Oct. 21, 1918 to Herman Hoekman and Kathryn deNeui Hoekman, she graduated from Milbank High School in 1937. After a year of teacher training college, she was married to Harold Bleeker, a farmer in Emery, S.D., and taught in a one-room country school until she was widowed 18 months later due to a farming accident. She then attended Bob Jones University for one year in 1941-42 before marrying the Rev. Dr. Richard Schilke, a Canadian minister. She supported him in his work pastoring churches in Minitonas, MB, Edmonton, AB, and Anaheim, Calif.
In 1951, they moved to Oak Park, Ill, where Richard served as the General Missions Secretary for the North American Baptist Conference for over 30 years.
With her deep faith and warm, outgoing personality, Kay was the perfect pastor's wife and then a wonderful hostess for the many missionaries who passed through their home. She was the loving mother of four children, was active in various roles at Forest Park Baptist Church for 50 years and worked part-time as a receptionist for more than 30 years. After 58 years of marriage, following Richard's death in 2001 due to a house fire, Kay moved to Beaverton to be near family where she made friends with everyone she met. Whether at an airport or grocery store, she reached out to anyone God put in her path. She was famously known for her hugs.
Kay is survived by her sister, Florence Schulte of Canton, S.D.; and her four children and their spouses, Dr. Clifford Schilke (Pat Furey) of Chapel Hill, N.C., Dianne Schilke Davis (Fred E. Davis III) of Hamden, Conn,, Dr. Donald Schilke (Svetlana Schilke) of Yuma, Ariz., and Linda Schilke Kinnier (Jim Kinnier) of Portland. She has seven grandchildren, Kathryn Davis Clarke, Robert Davis, Daniel Schilke, Thomas Schilke, Sara Schilke Rountree, Sindri Kinnier and Hannah Kinnier McLeod; and one great-grandchild, Curtis Davis Oliver Clarke.
A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, 2017 at the Bethany Baptist Church, 4545 NW Kaiser Rd., Portland. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to North American Baptist Missions, 1219 Pleasant Grove Blvd., Roseville, CA 95678.

Predicting the Future
Tumblr media
Functional medicine testing is a similar type of forecast. It can help us be aware of possible increased risk of certain health challenges. For example, it is possible to determine when there is an increased possibility of developing diabetes, cardiovascular disease, osteoporosis, kidney disease, and other health issues.
Modern functional medicine is able to predict a high probability of developing chronic health conditions. Laboratory tests and other medical examination procedures can detect problems before they become serious, which allows us to make positive changes.
Pre-diabetes is a good example. A person who is pre-diabetic is at least two and a half times more likely to become fully diabetic. The good news is, with modifications in diet, exercise, and nutritional support this can almost always be turned around.
Holistic health care, as practiced here at Health+Plus Clinic, provides you with insight into possible future health problems and recommendations to potentially avoid serious health problems.
WHAT IS HOLISTIC HEALTH CARE?
Holistic health care is an approach to wellness that emphasizes the interconnectedness of the mind, body, and spirit. It goes beyond treating symptoms and aims to address the root causes of health issues by considering the whole person and their lifestyle. In this comprehensive approach, practitioners consider various factors such as physical, mental, emotional, social, and environmental aspects of an individual’s life.
To that end, one of the significant benefits of holistic health care is its focus on prevention and proactive measures to maintain overall well-being. By considering the interconnectedness of various aspects of health, holistic practitioners can provide insights into potential future health problems that may arise based on an individual’s current health status, lifestyle choices, and other factors.
Through a detailed assessment and analysis, holistic health care practitioners can identify risk factors, early signs, and markers that indicate the possibility of developing serious health conditions in the future. This holistic approach allows for a more comprehensive understanding of a person’s health, beyond the immediate symptoms or concerns they may have.
With the knowledge of potential future health problems, holistic health care practitioners can provide personalized recommendations and interventions to help individuals potentially avoid or minimize the impact of those health issues. These recommendations often encompass a wide range of strategies, including lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, stress management techniques, physical activity, natural remedies, and complementary therapies.
For example, if we, as a holistic health care practitioner, identify certain risk factors for cardiovascular disease in a patient, we may suggest dietary modifications such as reducing saturated fat intake, increasing fiber consumption, and recommending regular exercise to improve cardiovascular health. Additionally, we may also recommend stress reduction techniques, such as meditation or yoga, to support overall well-being.
By adopting these proactive measures and making necessary lifestyle changes, our patients can potentially reduce their risk of developing serious health problems in the future. Holistic health care’s emphasis on prevention and early intervention aligns with the notion that taking care of one’s overall well-being can lead to better long-term health outcomes.
If you are interested in learning more about what we have to offer at Health+Plus Clinic here in the Kansas City area, or you want to schedule your physical exam and get started, call 816-625-4497 or use our contact page. We would love to meet you!

What Do NATURAL, ALTERNATIVE, and HOLISTIC Mean, Anyway?
“Natural” isn’t always what you think it is
‘Natural’ may be applied to a substance or process that exists on its own in nature – that are not manufactured by humans. Herbs, for example, are natural. This sounds better than using man-made chemicals, right?
‘Natural’ isn’t always good, though. Remember that poison ivy and rattlesnake venom are natural. So, when a label says ‘all natural’ it doesn’t necessarily mean that it’s healthy for you.
“Alternative” swaps one thing for another
‘Alternative’ means using one thing in place of another. In this case it means replacing a drug with an herb or vitamin, for example. For some people, taking a garlic supplement may effectively replace blood pressure prescription. Diet, exercise, and nutritional supplements may be effective options for diabetic medication.
“Holistic” and the whole person
‘Holistic’ means considering the ‘whole person’. Current standard medical care is ‘problem-focused’. One symptom or health concern per appointment, please. ‘Holistic’ means listening and caring for the whole person. Lifestyle factors, traumas, stresses, diet, etc. all have an influence on one’s well-being. The holistic practitioner is considering all these elements of the patient’s life.

What Are Vitamin Infusions?
Many of the people who visit Health+Plus Clinic in Oak Grove, Missouri receive intravenous infusions of vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. The purposes for this include replenishing deficiencies, re-hydrating, improving circulation, optimizing metabolism, and improving symptoms.
Patients receive a mixture of nutrients that are specific to their particular condition. Some infusions help boost energy, while others focus on stimulating the immune system, removing toxins, improving brain and nerve function, or improving circulation. All are replenishing essential nutrients that the body needs in order to be as healthy as possible.
Tumblr media
B12/B-Complex Injections
Vitamin B12 is necessary for normal energy production, healthy nerve and brain function, mental alertness, formation of normal red blood cells, health immune function, physical strength, and hormone production.
It has been estimated that at least 50% of adult Americans have less than ideal levels of B Vitamins. Why so many? Because many medications block the absorption of B12. Also, as digestion becomes less efficient with aging, we simply don’t absorb them as well.
How it Works
Vitamin B12 is a water-soluble vitamin, which means it dissolves in water and can be excreted in the urine. It is absorbed in the small intestine, where it is transported to the liver and other tissues. Vitamin B12 is then converted into a form that is used by the body to carry out its many functions.
Benefits
Vitamin B12 is essential for many important bodily functions, including:
Energy production: Vitamin B12 is necessary for the conversion of food into energy.
Nerve and brain function: Vitamin B12 is important for the proper functioning of the nervous system.
Mental alertness: Vitamin B12 is important for mental alertness. It helps to improve memory and concentration.
Red blood cell formation: Vitamin B12 is necessary for the formation of red blood cells. Red blood cells carry oxygen to the tissues and remove carbon dioxide.
Immune function: Vitamin B12 helps to boost the immune system. It helps to fight off infection and disease.
Physical strength: Vitamin B12 is important for physical strength. It helps to increase muscle mass and strength.
Hormone production: Vitamin B12 is important for the production of hormones. It helps to regulate metabolism, fertility, and mood.
How to Get B Vitamins Naturally
Vitamin B12 is found in animal products, such as meat, fish, poultry, and eggs. Other B Vitamins mainly come from grains.
Deficiency
If you cannot get it naturally from your diet, a deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause a number of problems, including:
Anemia: A deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause anemia, a condition in which the body does not have enough red blood cells.
Fatigue: A deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause fatigue.
Impaired nerve function: A deficiency of vitamin B12 can impair nerve function, causing numbness and tingling in the hands and feet.
Memory loss: A deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause memory loss.
Depression: A deficiency of vitamin B12 can cause depression.
We Can Help
B vitamins are an essential nutrient that plays a role in many important bodily functions. It is important to get enough B vitamins from food and/or supplements. However, a B Vitamin IV may be necessary to quickly boost your levels if you are not getting enough B Vitamins from your diet. Contact us today to learn more. Just call 816-625-4497 or use our contact page.

About Covid “Leftovers”
Unfortunately, everyone knows someone who had COVID. Most people know of someone dealing with ‘long COVID.” No matter your opinion of the origin, political response, and social reaction to COVID, it is a very real and potentially deadly virus that caused permanent damage to millions.
Tumblr media
Typical Covid Leftovers
1. Disruption of the Immune System:
COVID-19 can trigger an overactive immune response, leading to a dysregulated immune system even after recovery. This can result in a heightened risk of autoimmune disorders, chronic inflammation, and increased vulnerability to other infections.
2. Hormonal Imbalances:
The virus can disrupt the delicate balance of hormones within the body. This disruption may lead to irregularities in the menstrual cycle, fertility challenges, and hormonal imbalances that impact overall well-being.
3. Thyroid and Pituitary Gland Dysfunction:
COVID-19 has been associated with thyroid dysfunction, including both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism. Moreover, the virus can affect the pituitary gland, which plays a crucial role in regulating hormone production throughout the body.
4. Brain and Neurological Effects:
Emerging evidence suggests that COVID-19 can penetrate the central nervous system, potentially leading to neurological complications. These may manifest as persistent brain fog, memory issues, headaches, mood disorders, and even neurological conditions such as Guillain-Barré syndrome.
5. Liver Damage:
The virus can cause inflammation and injury to the liver, ranging from mild abnormalities in liver function tests to more severe conditions such as hepatitis and liver failure. Prolonged liver damage can have long-term implications for overall health and well-being.
6. Lung Injury and Respiratory Complications:
Even in individuals who did not require hospitalization, COVID-19 can leave lasting damage to the lungs. Conditions such as pulmonary fibrosis, scarring, and reduced lung capacity have been observed, leading to persistent respiratory symptoms and decreased quality of life.
Understanding the Connection:
Given the range of long-term health issues associated with COVID-19, it is crucial for individuals experiencing health challenges around the same time as their infection to consider a potential connection. If you are grappling with persistent symptoms following COVID-19, it is highly recommended to undergo a thorough wellness screening., which we offer here at Health+Plus Clinic in Oak Grove, Missouri.
Seeking Support and Treatment:
Discovering a connection between your health challenges and a previous COVID-19 infection can provide crucial insights for targeted treatment and management strategies. We can develop personalized plans to improve the functioning of affected systems and mitigate the long-term consequences.
Conclusion:
Sadly, COVID-19 is far from being just a temporary illness. Its long-term consequences can impact various systems in the body, causing persistent health challenges for many individuals. If you have a health challenge that began at about the same time as COVID, you should suspect a connection.
Health+Plus Clinic in Oak Grove, Missouri offers a thorough wellness screening that checks your lungs, circulation, hormones, thyroid, liver, etc. It is definitely recommended if you have long-term symptoms. If a dysfunction is found, there are most likely steps that can be taken to improve how your body functions.  If you are interested in learning more or you want to schedule your wellness screening, call 816-625-4497 or use our contact page. Our Treatment Philosophy
Health+Plus is committed to providing the best possible care for our patients, offering a variety of services and treatments that can help people improve their overall health and well-being.
Whether you’re chronically sick and need to restore your health, want to customize your wellness, prevent future illness, are in pain and need relief, and/or want to reduce the effects of the stresses in your life… Health+Plus has alternative health solutions for you!
At Health+Plus clinic we do not treat specific diseases, we treat people. We provide re-hydration, replenishment of vitamin and mineral deficiencies and other therapies to support the body as it self-heals.
We combine the latest scientific methods with holistic and traditional approaches to discover the root causes of your health challenges. Your body has inborn systems and strategies for optimal health. However, dietary, lifestyle, environmental and emotional stresses, and traumas may inhibit or prevent you from being healthy.
At Health+Plus it’s all about you. We focus on you and your needs in a friendly and caring way. You’re always in charge of your health care. The providers and staff make time to explain your conditions, the treatments that are recommended, and answer questions so you can understand before you decide on a treatment plan.
We see people from all walks of life. We help people with chronic illnesses and people who just want to live a healthier lifestyle and be as healthy as they can be. Sometimes we see people that are looking for alternative health solutions to the traditional medical field or are in search of a second opinion.
Fees and Insurance
Our fees are affordable. Health+Plus does not accept insurance, we are a pay-per-service facility. We believe that healthcare is a deeply personal matter, and insurance companies should not dictate the types of treatments and therapies a patient needs. Please note that many of our treatments are also not covered by insurance at any clinic, anywhere.
What to Expect
Our providers are also strong advocates of wellness exams; meaning that every day they see patients who come for an ‘annual exam’ or want to be checked ‘just because they are 40’ or because a sister found out she has cancer.
When you come to Health+Plus you will begin with a general physical examination, extensive laboratory tests, EKG, lung function testing, vein and artery screening, and an extensive health and history with a provider.
You will have a personal consultation with the provider. We will listen to your symptoms and concerns and ask questions about your condition and health history. The extent of your consultation will depend on your individual situation.
After your initial examination a treatment plan will be decided for you based on your laboratory and examination findings. This treatment plan will outline recommended treatments and the optimal timeframe to complete treatments.
Some people wrongly believe that they can ‘drop off’ their body at the clinic and pick it back up later- something like dropping off dry-cleaning, or a vehicle for a tire-change. Ideal health isn’t that simple, it requires time and partnership. Click here to learn more.
Your Health, Your Choice
You can choose what types of alternative health care you want. At Health+Plus we promote wellness and encourage people to strive for optimal health. Some people are interested only in symptom relief. Others are seeking better overall health. Some want to have a specific alternative treatment they have heard about. We’re ready to help you feel better, live better and we will help you create your own plan for wellness.
The need for treatment is based on history, examination findings and laboratory results. Your treatment will be monitored by repeat tests to track your progress.
Keep in Mind
Wellness is a process- it doesn’t happen in a day.
If you are interested in learning more about what we have to offer at Health+Plus Clinic here in the Kansas City area, or you want to schedule your physical exam and get started, call 816-625-4497 or use our contact page. We would love to meet you!

The Protein Predicament: Animal, Plant, or Both?
By Dr. David B. Clark DABCI, NMD, DC
The importance of protein in our diet is a well-accepted fact. It’s crucial for growth, cellular repair, and immune function. However, as much as health experts agree on the necessity of protein, the ‘how much’ and ‘what kind’ of protein are points of disagreement. Should we get our protein solely from plants, animals, or a combination of both? How much protein is ideal?
Tumblr media
Understanding Protein
Protein is a macronutrient made up of smaller units known as amino acids. These amino acids are categorized as essential (cannot be synthesized by the body) and non-essential (can be synthesized by the body). The primary point of divergence between animal and plant proteins lies in their amino acid profiles and other associated nutrients.
Animal Protein
Animal-source proteins, including meat, poultry, fish, eggs, and dairy foods, are often referred to as complete proteins. This means they contain all essential amino acids in sufficient quantities. Moreover, they are rich in essential nutrients like vitamin B12, iron, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids.
Plant Protein
Plant proteins, derived from legumes, grains, nuts, and seeds, are generally not considered complete proteins because they lack one or more essential amino acids. However, by combining different sources of plant protein, you can still obtain a complete amino acid profile. Additionally, plant proteins are rich in fiber, antioxidants, and are generally lower in saturated fats.
Digestibility
It’s true that plant proteins typically require more effort to be completely digested compared to animal proteins. This is due to the presence of certain anti-nutrients like phytates and oxalates that can inhibit absorption. However, cooking, fermenting, or sprouting plant foods can significantly improve nutrient availability.
Nutritional Requirements
The average adult should consume between 3 to 4 ounces (approximately 80 to 110 grams) of protein daily. For pregnant or nursing women and individuals over 65, the higher end of this scale is recommended. Around one-third of your daily caloric intake should ideally come from protein sources, whether animal-based, plant-based, or a mix of both.
Ethical and Environmental Considerations
Beyond the nutritional aspects, many people consider the ethical and environmental implications of their protein choices. Animal farming often has a more significant environmental impact in terms of land use, water consumption, and greenhouse gas emissions. On the other hand, a diet overly reliant on monocrops like soy can also pose sustainability challenges.
Whether animal or plant protein is better for you can depend on numerous factors such as lifestyle, pre-existing health conditions, ethical beliefs, and nutritional needs. There is no one-size-fits-all answer.
At Health+Plus Clinic, we recommend a balanced approach to diet and nutrition, focusing on whole, unprocessed foods. If you have specific dietary concerns or health conditions, consulting with a healthcare provider for personalized guidance is always the best course of action.
Contact us today at 816-625-4497 or visit our contact page to schedule a consultation and learn more. Wherever you are in the Kansas City area—Oak Grove, Independence, Grain Valley—we’re just a short drive away!

Hormone Therapy: Do You Need It?
By Melissa Abramovitz APRN/FNP-BC
Tumblr media
Alarming Trend
Recent studies have highlighted an alarming trend. Over the past few decades, hormone production in individuals has seen a significant reduction compared to historical levels. Take testosterone, for instance, a hormone often associated with male sexual health but also essential for women. In the last 50 years, men’s average testosterone production has fallen by a shocking 50 percent. Concurrently, the healthy equilibrium between various hormones has been disturbed, impacting overall health and wellness.
The complex interplay between hormones is a dance of fine balance. A drop in certain hormones like estrogen or testosterone, for instance, increases the risk of conditions like diabetes. Research among Type 2 diabetics has shown that elevating these hormones to healthier levels can significantly improve blood sugar control. Moreover, maintaining optimal hormone levels can reduce the risk of serious health issues, such as dementia, Alzheimer’s disease, and cardiovascular diseases, demonstrating the holistic role hormones play in our bodies.
Notably, our external environment and lifestyle choices can significantly affect hormone production. Chronic stress can reduce most hormone production, suppressing the immune system over time. Similarly, depression can lead to lowered hormone levels, further impacting overall well-being. Dietary habits, such as high consumption of sugars and other carbohydrates, can disrupt your body’s hormone balance.
Environmental Concerns
We also need to be mindful of the numerous environmental toxins that result in hormonal imbalances. Certain herbicides mimic estrogen, confusing our bodily systems, while various food additives and chemicals used in manufacturing processes can upset the delicate hormonal equilibrium.
Do You Need Hormone Therapy?
So, do you need hormone therapy? It’s a question worth considering, given the critical role hormones play in our health. If you’re experiencing symptoms of hormone imbalance, such as unexplained weight changes, mood swings, changes in appetite, or fatigue, it might be worth having your hormones tested.
At Health+Plus, we have experienced Health Care Providers ready to guide you. They can help assess your hormone levels and recommend personalized treatment plans, which may include hormone therapy, if necessary.
Remember, maintaining a balanced hormone level is not just about mitigating symptoms; it’s about optimizing your health and enhancing your quality of life. Don’t wait until symptoms worsen.
If you are interested in learning more, call 816-625-4497 or use our contact page. We would love to help you take proactive steps today to ensure a healthier tomorrow.
