Warnings: Language, mentions of sexual activity
Summary: Chapter 5 of The Freshman Series from Choices.

Ch. 5
Tumblr media
On Wednesday, Lacey and Zack and Tyler were just getting out of their math lecture, thankfully a little early.
"... I'll expect those problem sets completed and emailed to me by Friday,” Dr. Atiyah said, over the din of students packing up.  Lacey hated when students did that.  Granted, she’d only had a few classes in college in her life, so she didn’t necessarily know how bad it was.  She knew she was annoyed now, though.  Dr. Atiyah was still talking.  She also looked annoyed, so Lacey made eye contact with her sympathetically.
"Ugh, who knew college was going to be so much work?" Zack moaned, shoving his calculator in his bag.  It was a large problem set, but it seemed like it would be easy enough.
"Are you kidding me?  I can't wait to get started!" Tyler said.  Lacey hadn’t known him long, but he definitely had a strong math background.  Luckily for Lacey, he was her roommate and classmate, so she would most likely do well in her class.
"Maybe we could form a little study group!  That would make the work more fun!" Lacey exclaimed, hopeful that Tyler would bite.  She was good at math, but it was obviously clear that Tyler was brilliant after just two classes.
"Study Buddies!” Tyler exclaimed a bit loudly.  Hopefully that meant he was excited to do some math, and help her with some math, “I wish I hadn't just said that so enthusiastically."
"Have I ever told you how adorably nerdy you are? Study buddies it is,” Zack said with a smile as they walked back to their suite together.  Today she was heading back and working on a short story for her Fiction Writing class, and then putting together some notes on the college basketball game of her choice.  Her professor hadn’t explicitly said men’s or women’s, so she was doing it on the 1998 Harvard v. Stanford game when the first 16 seed ever upset a 1 seed in the NCAA tournament.
As they exited the lecture hall, Lacey spotted Abbie walking back toward the suite.  She noticed that Tyler and Zack exchanged a glance.
"I'm uh... gonna go catch up to her.  Talk to you guys later, okay?" Tyler said, sauntering off towards Abbie.
"Aw.  He's like a puppy in love with another puppy.  Speaking of which... how are things with you and Chris?" Zack asked, nudging her shoulder as they sauntered across campus.  The night before, it had rained and Lacey had sat up on the roof, holding her umbrella and enjoying the pitter patter on the railing.  She jumped over a remaining puddle as she pondered her answer.
"I... I don't know what you're talking about,” Lacey said, hoping Zack would drop it. Yes she slept with him, but it meant nothing to her.
"Oh really?" Zack did not believe her.
"Okay, I'll tell you,” she was weak.  Plus, she figured everyone needed to know before Chris said something about it.  He might make it out to be something that it wasn’t, “So, we kind of, slept together.”
"Wow!  You work fast!  I figured it would take at least a week for you two to end up in bed together!" Zack exclaimed, giddy.  She could see the wheels turning in his head, and she could only imagine what he was thinking.
"Not so loud!  It was only casual and it means nothing more to me now.  But the worst part is, I have to talk to Chris for Professor Vasquez's assignment.  And it's going to be so awkward,” Lacey groaned.
"Oh don't be such a baby.  I'm sure he'll be eager to see you!  Very eager,” Zack winked over at her.
"Zack..." Lacey groaned, not knowing how she was supposed to explain this to Zack in a way that would make him hear that she didn’t want Chris.  But, he really wanted her and Chris to get together, so she didn’t know that he would listen.  She didn’t know if she should mention how she felt about James to him. He was a gossip, and she didn’t want everyone in the world to know before James knew.
"Fine.  I'll stop teasing you.  For now.  But just be honest with me for a sec.  How do you feel about Chris?" Zack asked.
"He's just a friend.  It meant nothing to me.  Just a casual fling,” Lacey shrugged.
"Well, if he's your friend, then talking to him should be no big deal, right?" Zack asked.
"I guess you have a point..." Lacey agreed.  Okay, now Zack was seeming to come around to seeing her view on this. She could rest easy now, pretty sure he wouldn’t be misrepresenting what she said.
"Of course I do.  It's best to learn this about me now: I'm always right.  Now come on!  Chris should be in the middle of practice!  You can watch him in action and then ask him a few questions about life as a football player.  And in the meantime, I can make sure you don't embarrass yourself,” Zack smiled, and Lacey knew he was thinking about how good the football players were going to look.  She wasn’t going to lie, she was thinking about it too.  And she’d be lying if she said she didn’t like the idea of Chris, dripping with sweat, running his hands through his hair, drinking water… Oh no, she wasn’t as over as him she had thought.
"How thoughtful of you..." Lacey murmured, now unable to get the thought of a sweaty, athletic Chris out of her head.  She smiled softly, thinking of the last time she saw sweaty, athletic Chris in her bed.  He was super hot, and seemingly a very sweet guy.  But, he did seem a tad emotionally unavailable, especially with the whole ex-girlfriend thing.  And she did not want to deal with the Becca stuff.  And James… if she could draw up her perfect man, it would probably be someone like James.
They walked towards the field, chatting briefly, a couple of times laughing about a joke they had cracked.  Lacey glanced over at Zack with a grin, then noticed that James was walking by.  She raised her hand and waved to him.  He grinned, and waved back.  Zack looked between Lacey and James, then gave her a knowing smile.  She didn’t say anything.  A few minutes later, they arrived at the stadium and found the team on the field, practicing drills.
"Oh wow... look at Captain America over there by the sideline.  Wait... I recognize that face!  It's Darren Taylor!  He's our school's starting quarterback!" Zack grinned, his eyes roaming over Darren.
"I thought Chris was our starting quarterback,” Lacey said, seeming to remember that Chris had mentioned being the quarterback.
"Is that what he told you? Chris is only a freshman.  He's our backup,” Zack said, looking over at Darren still.
"I don't see Chris around... maybe I should ask Darren a few questions about football life,” Lacey said, thinking maybe he would be a good second option if she couldn’t find Chris.
She walked up to Darren and found him chatting with a pair of all-too familiar girls...
"What are you doing here?" Becca sneered at her.  Lacey didn’t really want people knowing she’d slept with Chris, but in this moment she entertained dropping a hint to Becca, if only to wipe that smirk off of her face.
 "Breathing? Existing?" Lacey said instead.
"Well, go exist somewhere else.  Madison and I are having a deep conversation with Darren!" Becca snarked.
"He was just telling us about how to handle getting tackled...  Maybe you could show me your technique later, Darren!  I'm super curious,” Madison flirted.
"It's all about squaring your hips and getting low to the ground,” Darren demonstrated, Madison and Becca’s eyes roaming over his hips.  Lacey looked and approved too.
 "Sounds like fun!" Madison giggled.
"Actually... I was sort of hoping I could ask Darren a question.  For a project, you know?" Lacey interjected.
"Go right ahead, new girl.  Don't be shy,” Darren grinned softly at her.
"I want to ask, do you get a lot of girls?" Lacey knew that was the type of question Vasquez would want her to ask.  He wanted drama, she would try to get him some drama.
"Wow, rude much?" Becca asked snarkily.  Perfect, Lacey thought, the drama she was asking for.
"Let's just say I'm not hurting for attention.  Life is good,” Darren grinned, looking Lacey up and down.  Lacey appreciated the attention, but was not really interested.
"Not everyone on the team seems so happy-go-lucky..." Zack gestured over toward the bench at the far end of the field, where Chris sat by himself, hanging his head.
"I'll go talk to him... see how he's doing,” Lacey grimaced, knowing she cared about him and wanted him to be okay, but not necessarily to spend the night with him.  Well, maybe just the night.  He was really good in bed.
"Good luck.  He's super moody.  He wouldn't even talk to me.  And I'm me!" Becca exclaimed.  Lacey thought she might know why Chris didn’t want to talk to her.  It may have something to do with what happened between their legs the other night.  Instead of telling that to Becca, Lacey walked away towards Chris.
"Hey there... you doing okay?" Lacey asked him.
"Oh!  Lacey!  I'm solid.  Just a little winded from all the drills,” Chris plastered on a fake smile.  Lacey could see through it all.  He was bummed.
"Really?  Aren't you bummed about being a bench-warmer?" Lacey asked, sitting down next to him on the bench.
"You can see right through me.  It's just... I knew I'd be on the bench behind Darren, but I wasn't really prepared for the reality of it.  I can't stand the idea of not being able to help my teammates get a win, you know?  All through high school, I lived for Friday nights.  That rush of adrenaline as our team sprinted out onto the field... nothing else even comes close.  I just feel like... if I'm not on the field, then who am I?” Chris groaned, rubbing his face with his hands.
"You're Chris Powell, conqueror of women and football.  Most handsome man as far as the eye can see.”
"I guess I am if you say I am,” Chris laughed.
He reached out to take Lacey’s hand.  Lacey took a step back, and she saw the hurt in his eyes.
"I... uh..." he moved away from her, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Sorry.  Ugh.  What a day..." Lacey moaned.  She shouldn’t have flirted.  She didn’t mean it, but Chris obviously took it to be more than it was.
"Chris!  Coach is asking for you.  Ready to get in some reps?" Logan ran over, looking Lacey up and down.
"Looks like I'm up.  See you later, Lacey,” Chris picked up his helmet and took off.  Logan winked at her, then ran off too.  She glanced down at her outfit and realized that you could see her breasts really nice in her shirt, and her midriff was showing.  It was apparently a good look, if the entire football team was checking her out.
"Sure thing!  Good luck out there!" Lacey called after him.
Zack walked up to her just then, "So... how's our golden boy?"
"Feeling less than golden, I think,” Lacey sighed.
"Sounds like it's up to us to cheer him up.  Don't worry.  We'll think of something,” Zack grinned.
 …
That Friday night, the night before the first game of the season, Lacey was sitting at the table in the kitchen with Zack and Tyler working on their math homework. She was breezing through it, so was Tyler, and Zack was doing pretty well with it.
"This problem set is actually harder than I thought!" Tyler said, stuck on the final problem.  Lacey laughed, knowing he was going to figure it out.
"That's why you need... study buddies!" Zack exclaimed, adding jazz hands for effect.
"You're never going to let me forget saying that, are you?" Tyler groaned.
As the three continued to work, Abbie walked past, headed for the living room.
"I'll be sitting in front of my laptop waiting for the new episode of The Crown and The Flame if anyone needs me,” Abbie plopped down on the couch, grabbing a magazine from the coffee table.
"So Tyler, what are you waiting for?" Zack nudged him.
"What are you talking about?" Tyler asked incredulously.
"You and Abbie!  When are you going to ask her out?" Zack whispered.
"Ask her out?  No way, I'd just embarrass myself.  Right, Lacey?" Tyler looked to Lacey for validation.
"Maybe you should go talk to her Lacey, you've got the female connection.  Spend some time with Abbie, talk to her about Tyler, and I know you can help them get together," Zack pleaded.
"Okay... Let me talk to Abbie.  Maybe I could feel her out.  But I will not tell you everything she says to me. Girl code,” Lacey said hesitantly.
"Girl recon.  I love it!" Zack chirped.  Lacey could see the gossip wheels turning.
"I owe you one, Lacey!" Tyler smiled at her.
"Yeah, I'm going to cash in on that one later,” Lacey gestured to their math homework.
She got up and approached Abbie, "Hey Abbie!  I'm coming down with a serious case of cabin fever.  Want to head out and get some air?"
"Eh sure.  My show isn't on for another half hour... I've got some time to kill."
"So... I didn't know you were into fantasy stuff,” Lacey said as they began walking across the campus.
"I guess I have pretty eclectic tastes...  I try not to judge things by standards of cool or nerdy.  Just... do I like it, you know?" Abbie said, taking a seat on a bench.
"Oh!  Of course!  Speaking of, uh, stuff you like... What do you think of nerdy guys?" Lacey tried asking.
"I don't know... I'm not exactly sure what kind of guys I like,” Abbie admitted, she surely knew that Abbie was onto her.
"Oh!  So... you're more into girls?" Lacey asked, curious, wondering if Abbie would bite and admit something.
"No... I mean... I'm pretty sure I'm not into girls either.  I guess... I'm just a little confused about what I want."
"Huh.  Do you have like, a celebrity crush?"
"Not really...  Honestly, I think if I ever fall for someone, it'll be because of his personality.  The thing is, I've never fallen in love.  So... I don't know what it'll take to make that happen."
"Maybe you just haven't met the right guy yet. Or maybe you have!"
"What's that supposed to mean?" Abbie asked in shock.
"I'm talking about Tyler!" Lacey made eye contact with Abbie and smiled.
"Tyler, huh?  I hadn't even considered dating him."
"Really? Harsh,” Lacey was surprised.  The two of them spent a lot of time together.
"I didn't mean it like that.  It's just... he doesn't really seem that interested in me.  Sometimes I think he's scared to talk to me,” Abbie said softly.
"So... what do you think you'd do if he did ask you out?"
"Honestly?  I have no idea." Abbie chuckled.  At least she didn’t seem completely closed off to the idea.
"Well... just think about it, I guess.  You never know what might happen,” Lacey smiled over at her.
"I'll think about it.  I guess... I barely know who I am.  Much less who I want to date."
"Sometimes... I think life has a way of forcing us to decide who we are.  Like... we only find out who we are when a crucial moment arrives."
"In that case... I guess I'm just waiting for my moment.  What about you Lacey?  I know something happened with you and Chris.  I can see it in the way he looks at you,” Abbie asked warily.
"He looks at me?" Lacey asked, fully aware that he looked at her.  She knew exactly what Abbie was talking about.  He looked at her like she was a star in the night sky.
"Oh yeah.  All night when we stayed up typing our asses off, he couldn't keep his eyes off of you.”
"Okay, fine, you got me.  We slept together the first night we were here,” Lacey admitted.
"Oh, damn.  So you guys are a thing?" Abbie asked.
"No, not at all.  I told him I just wanted to be friend, that it meant nothing,” Lacey said.
 "But?" Abbie asked.
"No buts.  I'm kind of interested in someone else though..." Lacey’s thoughts went to James.  She smiled softly thinking about him.
 "Really? Who?"
"Umm, his name is James.  He's this guy that I work with.  He's so witty, and smart, and his writing makes me swoon.  And, Abbie, he is straight-up, the hottest guy I've ever seen in my life.  But I don't think he's interested in me.  He always gets super sarcastic when I'm around.  Okay, I say always like we've interacted a lot.  We've talked and hung out a few times, and I'm already smitten!  Listen to me, Abbie.  I don't even know him and I'm acting like a love struck child."
"He sounds great, Lacey.  I would love to meet him sometime."
"I would love that too.  Mostly because it would mean that I would have hung out with him for enough time to introduce him to my friends."
"Okay... as much as I want to dish with you about hot guys, maybe we should get back.  It's a bit chilly, and my show is starting."
She and Abbie got up and walked back to the suite together.  Lacey smiled and sat down next to the boys to attack her last three problems.
"See you guys later, I'll be in my room,” Abbie waved, squeezing Lacey’s shoulder as she walked away.
Lacey decided that she wasn’t going to tell all of Abbie’s secrets, just that she was going to encourage Tyler to get to know her better.
"Okay... so Abbie and I just had an interesting conversation,” Lacey started.
"Tell. Us. Everything,” Zack rested his chin on his hands, looking over at her as if she was going to reveal the cure for cancer.
“I’m not going to tell you everything, I’m going to respect the girl code, but Tyler, I really think you should get to know her better.  Don’t worry about impressing her or being nervous, just be you.”
"Wow... okay.  At least it sounds like I might have a shot!  Thanks, Lacey!” Tyler exclaimed.
"So when are you going to ask her out?" Zack asked Tyler.  Did he literally not hear anything Lacey had said?
"Tell you what, I promise I'll make a move... by the end of the quarter,” Tyler promised.
"Interesting.  How's this for a deal...  You ask out Abbie... and I'll promise to ask out Brandon too,” Zack added.
"I'm pretty sure you were going to do that anyway,” Tyler teased.
 "Guilty as charged."
"See? Flirting is easy for you,” Tyler moaned.
"Flirting is never easy,” Zack stated matter-of-factly.
"Tell you what.  We'll make a pact.  By the end of the quarter, we'll both make a move,” Tyler agreed.
"What about you, Lacey?  Want in on the deal?" Zack asked her.  Her thoughts went to James immediately.
"I promise to ask out... someone,” Lacey’s mind was on the tall, dark, handsome man she worked with.
"Keeping your options open... I like it,” Zack winked, knowing it was James.
 "It's a pact!" Tyler grinned.
Lacey finished studying with them, then rushed off to finish some writing in the library. Once there, she found a seat in an alcove of bookshelves, hidden and private.  Without hesitation, she began working on her assignments, trying to get ahead on some of her assignments she had just been assigned this week.  She was just finishing her final paragraph of her sports-writing article when someone set down their bag next to her. She glanced up and saw James. With a grin, he took the place next to her.
“Hey, how are you James?” she tried to mask how excited she was to get to see him, and talk to him again.
“Good. How about you?” he responded as he tugged his laptop out of his bag.  They made eye contact and held it for a beat, until Lacey looked away, a blush tinting her cheeks.
“I’m doing okay,” she grinned through the blush.
 “Got any plans for tomorrow?”
“Oh, Chris has a game tomorrow.  I’m going to go to it,” she smiled.  “I don’t know if there are any after parties, but I’m sure my roommates will want to go and get hammered.  I’ll probably go with them to make sure they don’t do anything stupid.”
“Cool. I’m sure you’ll have a good time.”
“Oh, yeah. I’m sure I will.  You going?”
 “Yeah, definitely not.”
“Oh, okay. But you definitely should.  I’ll even save you a seat at the game if you want to join.”
He looked over at her, then said, “Can I ask you something?”
She closed her laptop and nodded, a bit nervous.
“What’s the deal with you and Chris?  There seems to be something going on there.”
“Oh, well,” she started, knowing she should probably come clean, “I mean, we slept together, casually, but I’m not into him for anything more than that.  We’re really just friends.  And roommates.”
“So, you’re single?” he looked over her with a smile, seemingly unfazed by her revelation that she had slept with Chris.
“Who’s asking?” she winked at him and hoped he was wanting to end her single status.
 “Just curious.”
“Hmm,” she added.  They made eye contact, and grinned at each other.  They sat together working for an hour or so, before Lacey decided she was tired and needed to go.  She started packing up, and James looked over at her.
 “You heading out?”
“Yeah, I’m pretty tired,” Lacey said with a sleepy smile.
“Well, good night.  Maybe I’ll hit you up at one of those after parties?” he asked hopefully.
“I’d like that,” she said, squeezing his shoulder and walking away to go back to her room.
 …
The next day, she was in the kitchen brewing some coffee, ready to face the day and spend the afternoon outside at a football game.  It had been awhile since she’d been to a college football game, but she was excited to watch it.  The Hartfeld team was pretty good, and watching Darren work was going to be fun.
"Hey, Lacey,” Chris smiled at her, walking out with his duffel bag.
"Ready for the big game?" Lacey asked, smiling back.
"Yeah... ready to keep the bench nice and warm,” Chris said sadly.
He walked away, sadly, and Lacey frowned.  Kaitlyn slid into a stool in front of her.
"Looks like someone's got his shoulder pads up in a twist.  What's up with him?" Kaitlyn asked.
"I think he just needs a boost... he's not used to playing backup,” Lacey said, sipping her coffee.
"Then let's remind him how awesome he is!  Assemble the housemates!  It's time to launch Operation Fan Club!  We're going to need five poster boards, a ten-pack of colored markers, and some body paint!" Kaitlyn exclaimed, a bit too loudly for only one sip of coffee.
"What are you planning?" Lacey managed to get out.
 "You'll see!" Kaitlyn grinned.
After a few hours of decorating signs, and body paint, later, Lacey pulled on a black bra and a cropped Hartfeld tee.  She pulled on a pair of black jeans, white Keds, and pulled her hair up in a party pony. At the end of getting ready, she decided to throw on some extra highlighter just for the heck of it.  She rushed out to the living room to grab her sign and wallet.
“Hot damn, Lacey Jae Morgan.  You look sexy,” Abbie said, throwing her arm around her waist.
Lacey laughed, hugging Abbie to her.  Abbie had her hair in two buns on top of her head, a Hartfeld tank, and ripped black jeans like Lacey’s.  She grinned down at her new friend.  They waltzed out of the suite with their other friends down to the field.
Once they arrived, early, they grabbed the seats in the front row, getting ready to cheer on their guy.  The teams were out on the field warming up, and while they warmed up, Lacey and Abbie chatted intermittently about football.  Abbie knew more than Lacey would have guessed, but Lacey loved how Abbie just liked what she liked, and held onto her passions tightly.  They laughed, they smiled, they were ready for the game to begin.  The teams ran back out and Lacey started, "Go Chris!"
She lifted her sign, which read ‘Chris is Number One!’
"I can't believe you convinced me to paint an R on my stomach,” Tyler said, lifting his shirt a little and glancing down at it.
"I hear you.  I want it noted that I'm only doing this for Chris's sake,” Abbie smirked.  Lacey grinned to herself as the two of them shared a mini-moment.
Her attention was drawn away from her friends as the team ran out onto the field. Lacey spotted Chris near the front of the pack.  He looked really happy, and Lacey was glad that the excitement of running onto the field for the first time was getting him amped up.  He deserved to be happy.
"Here he comes!  Shirts off everyone!" Kaitlyn shouted.
They all took off their shirts and revealed C-H-R-I-S painted across their stomachs!
"Whoo hoo!  Go Chris!” Lacey shouted.
"Oh... wow.  Thanks guys,” Chris said, glancing over at them sitting in the front row of the bleachers.
The band came on the field, the anthem played, the game began, and Chris took his seat on the bench.
"Looking good, Knights!" Becca exclaimed from the row behind Lacey.
"We love you, Darren!" Madison shouted, waving a red and white pom in the air. Lacey sort of wished she had one to wave, but figured her sign and stomach were enough.
Darren ran out on the field to the captain’s meeting in the center of the field.  The other team won, deferred, and the Knights got to receive.
"Go Knights!" Kaitlyn cheered as the ball sailed out the back of the end zone on the kickoff.
After the kickoff, the offense took the field.
"Omaha.  Fifty-two black,” Darren called, his team setting up the offense. Lacey scanned the defense, seeing they were lined up in a zone.  She hoped Logan was the type of receiver who excelled against a zone defense.  But she assumed the coaches had figured out how their teams were best suited to attack the game today, so she didn’t spend much time analyzing it.  Besides, it wasn’t fun to pay attention to those things in football.  Too many people on the field to worry about.  Not like basketball.  Ten total was just right.
Luckily, in the first quarter, the Knights dominated the game!  Logan scored a couple of touchdowns right away, off of the arm of Darren, answering the question about how he handled zone defense.
But the team seemed to lose focus the second quarter.  Logan and Darren looked on as their running back fumbled the ball twice.
"Come on Knights..." Kaitlyn said uneasily.
"Do the thing with the ball!" Zack attempted to cheer them on.  What he lacked in knowledge, he made up for in enthusiasm.
After a few more minutes of play, halftime found the score knotted at 21-21.
"Who knew sports could be so stressful?" Abbie joked as Zack and Kaitlyn paced nervously throughout the third quarter.  It was relatively uneventful, the opposing team only scoring one field goal. Through the fourth quarter, the score didn’t change.
As the game wound to a close, Hartfeld was down 24-21 with only a minute left to play!
"Let's do this Knights!  We can still win this thing!" Darren motivated his team for one final push to win the game, after a scoreless forty-four minutes.
Darren dropped back, looking for an opening...
"Holy crap!  They're blitzing,” Tyler looked away.  Lacey looked over approvingly.  Abbie had been explaining football terms to Tyler all game long, and he was quickly picking it up.
The opposing team rushed Darren in a sudden charge!  He took a vicious sack!
The crowd quieted, and everyone could here Darren groaning in pain.  He writhed around on the ground as the trainers rushed onto the field, just shouting “My ankle!” over and over.
"I definitely heard something snap...  I think I'm going to be sick,” Abbie leaned into Lacey’s shoulder.
“You should comfort Tyler,” Lacey whispered to Abbie.  Abbie shoved her, and they chuckled together.
"How is that even legal?" Tyler asked, looking to Abbie for an answer. But she had none, the whole crowd was fixated on the trainers attending to Darren.
As the crowd watched in stunned silence, Darren was carted off the field.
"Oh no,” Lacey moaned.  It was never good to see someone carted off, but Darren was sitting up on the gater with his ankle up.  She was relieved he was at least sitting up.
"Poor Darren... I hope he gets better soon,” Zack sighed.
"In the meantime, we've got a few seconds left to play,” Kaitlyn gestured back towards the forty yard line.
"It's next man up... and that man is Chris!" Lacey exclaimed.  She gripped Abbie’s arm.  The two of them clung to each other, hoping their friend would do okay.  Well, more than okay.  They were hoping he would be the hero.
Chris ran onto the field, taking Darren's place in the huddle.  They had a few seconds on the play clock.  Lacey could only imagine what was going through Chris’s head. She hoped he would be okay.  He needed this.
"Come on guys, let's get the crowd fired up! Go Knights!" Lacey shouted.
 "Yeah!" Kaitlyn joined in.
"And go... Chris!" Lacey shouted, encouraging her friend.
The crowd joined in, cheering for Chris.
"Okay... let's do this.  For Darren!" Chris said to his huddle.
The next play started.  Chris dropped back, looking for an opening...
"Hey, rookie!  I'm open!" Logan called.
Chris threw the ball, letting it loose with perfect form and a tight spiral, and...
"Touchdown, baby!" Logan exclaimed, dancing into the end zone.  The crowd roared, everyone screaming, and hugging. The band playing the fight song, the students dancing and singing, everyone else from the community fired up as well.
"What a throw!" Tyler grabbed Abbie’s arm.
 "That's our boy!" Kaitlyn shouted.
A while later, after the big win, Lacey and the suitemates waited for Chris on the main quad outside the stadium.
"There he is!" Zack shouted at them, sprinting over to Chris and hugging him.
"Whoo hoo!  That's our superstar!" Kaitlyn followed him.
"Hey guys!  Thanks so much for being there for me today!" Chris hugged them back, but looked over at Lacey.
"Of course! You're our... friend,” Lacey smiled, giving him a side hug.
"Lacey, I-" Chris whispered, reaching for her hand.
He was interrupted as Becca and Madison approached him.
"Wow.  That home run on the sixth and long? Amazing,” Lacey was unsure if Madison was being serious or joking…
"I can't even begin to tell you how wrong that sentence was…” Chris chuckled.
"The point Maddie is trying to make is, you need to come celebrate your victory with us,” Becca smiled softly at him.
"You should listen to them bro.  Kappa Phi Sigma house parties are epic.  The whole team is going, and that definitely has to include the new quarterback!" Logan clapped his hands on Chris’s shoulder, glancing down at Lacey and shooting her a wink.
Chris looked over at Lacey, then smiled and said, "Sure... I'd love to come.  As long as my friends are invited too.”
"You mean that bunch of- Uh, I mean, of course they're invited,” Becca smiled sickly.
"Sounds like fun.  I'll see you there,” Chris stood next to Lacey and waved at Becca and Madison.
"No way.  I'm not letting you out of my sight.  You're coming with me,” Becca gripped his sleeve and pulled him towards the Kappa house.
"Uh... I guess I'll see you there, guys,” Chris waved to Lacey.
 "Aggressive much?" Kaitlyn scoffed.
"I hate to say it, but I think our boy needs a rescue.  Those girls looked like trouble,” Zack grimaced.
"So... now it's time for Operation Rescue Chris from the Evil Sorority Girl?” Kaitlyn proposed.
"Maybe he doesn't want to be rescued?" Tyler asked, finally someone was making sense.  Lacey could tell that he was a bit interested in Becca and Madison, and that their presence wasn’t the worst thing.
"Trust me.  He does,” Abbie groaned angrily.
Everyone looked at Lacey, who cleared her throat.  She could tell her friends wanted to go to the party, and it seemed like everyone was going to be there.  What if James would be there?  He had mentioned something about finding her at an after party.  On the off chance he was going to be there, Lacey agreed with her friends.
"We need to rescue him!" Lacey exclaimed.
"Game on!  Kappa party, here we come!" Kaitlyn cheered.

Fats Waller
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Thomas Wright "Fats" Waller (May 21, 1904 – December 15, 1943) was an American jazz pianist, organist, composer, singer, and comedic entertainer. His innovations to the Harlem stride style laid the groundwork for modern jazz piano. His best-known compositions, "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Honeysuckle Rose", were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 1984 and 1999.
Early life
Waller was the youngest of 11 children (five of whom survived childhood) born to Adeline Locket Waller and the Reverend Edward Martin Waller in New York City. He started playing the piano when he was six and graduated to playing the organ at his father's church four years later. His mother instructed him when he was a youth. At the age of 14 he was playing the organ at the Lincoln Theater, in Harlem, and within 12 months he had composed his first rag. Waller's first piano solos ("Muscle Shoals Blues" and "Birmingham Blues") were recorded in October 1922, when he was 18 years old.
He was the prize pupil and later the friend and colleague of the stride pianist James P. Johnson.
Career
Against the opposition of his father, a clergyman, Waller became a professional pianist at the age of 15, working in cabarets and theaters. In 1918 he won a talent contest playing Johnson's "Carolina Shout", a song he learned from watching a player piano play it.
Waller became one of the most popular performers of his era, finding critical and commercial success in the United States and Europe. He was also a prolific songwriter, and many songs he wrote or co-wrote are still popular, such as "Honeysuckle Rose", "Ain't Misbehavin'" and "Squeeze Me". Fellow pianist and composer Oscar Levant dubbed Waller "the black Horowitz". Waller is believed to have composed many novelty tunes in the 1920s and 1930s and sold them for small sums, attributed to another composer and lyricist.
Standards attributed to Waller, sometimes controversially, include "I Can't Give You Anything but Love, Baby". Biographer Barry Singer conjectured that this jazz classic was written by Waller and lyricist Andy Razaf and provided a description of the sale given by Waller to the New York Post in 1929—he sold the song for $500 to a white songwriter, ultimately for use in a financially successful show (consistent with Jimmy McHugh's contributions to Harry Delmar’s Revels, 1927, and then to Blackbirds of 1928). He further supports the conjecture, noting that early handwritten manuscripts in the Dana Library Institute of Jazz Studies of "Spreadin' Rhythm Around" (Jimmy McHugh ©1935) are in Waller's hand. Jazz historian P.S. Machlin comments that the Singer conjecture has "considerable [historical] justification". Waller's son Maurice wrote in his 1977 biography of his father that Waller had once complained on hearing the song, and came from upstairs to admonish him never to play it in his hearing because he had had to sell it when he needed money. Maurice Waller's biography similarly notes his father's objections to hearing "On the Sunny Side of the Street" playing on the radio. Waller recorded "I Can't Give You…" in 1938, playing the tune but making fun of the lyrics; the recording was with Adelaide Hall who had introduced the song to the world at Les Ambassadeurs Club in New York in 1928.
The anonymous sleeve notes on the 1960 RCA Victor album Handful of Keys state that Waller copyrighted over 400 songs, many of them co-written with his closest collaborator, Andy Razaf. Razaf described his partner as "the soul of melody... a man who made the piano sing... both big in body and in mind... known for his generosity... a bubbling bundle of joy". Gene Sedric, a clarinetist who played with Waller on some of his 1930s recordings, is quoted in these sleeve notes recalling Waller's recording technique with considerable admiration: "Fats was the most relaxed man I ever saw in a studio, and so he made everybody else relaxed. After a balance had been taken, we'd just need one take to make a side, unless it was a kind of difficult number."
Waller played with many performers, from Nathaniel Shilkret (on Victor 21298-A) and Gene Austin to Erskine Tate, Fletcher Henderson, McKinney's Cotton Pickers and Adelaide Hall, but his greatest success came with his own five- or six-piece combo, "Fats Waller and his Rhythm".
On one occasion his playing seemed to have put him at risk of injury. Waller was kidnapped in Chicago leaving a performance in 1926. Four men bundled him into a car and took him to the Hawthorne Inn, owned by Al Capone. Waller was ordered inside the building, and found a party in full swing. Gun to his back, he was pushed towards a piano, and told to play. A terrified Waller realized he was the "surprise guest" at Capone's birthday party, and took comfort that the gangsters did not intend to kill him. It is rumored that Waller stayed at the Hawthorne Inn for three days and left very drunk, extremely tired, and had earned thousands of dollars in cash from Capone and other party-goers as tips.
In 1926, Waller began his recording association with the Victor Talking Machine Company/RCA Victor, his principal record company for the rest of his life, with the organ solos "St. Louis Blues" and his own composition, "Lenox Avenue Blues". Although he recorded with various groups, including Morris's Hot Babes (1927), Fats Waller's Buddies (1929) (one of the earliest multiracial groups to record), and McKinney's Cotton Pickers (1929), his most important contribution to the Harlem stride piano tradition was a series of solo recordings of his own compositions: "Handful of Keys", "Smashing Thirds", "Numb Fumblin'", and "Valentine Stomp" (1929). After sessions with Ted Lewis (1931), Jack Teagarden (1931) and Billy Banks' Rhythmakers (1932), he began in May 1934 the voluminous series of recordings with a small band known as Fats Waller and his Rhythm. This six-piece group usually included Herman Autrey (sometimes replaced by Bill Coleman or John "Bugs" Hamilton), Gene Sedric or Rudy Powell, and Al Casey.
Waller wrote "Squeeze Me" (1919), "Keepin' Out of Mischief Now", "Ain't Misbehavin'" (1929), "Blue Turning Grey Over You", "I've Got a Feeling I'm Falling" (1929), "Honeysuckle Rose" (1929) and "Jitterbug Waltz" (1942). He composed stride piano display pieces such as "Handful of Keys", "Valentine Stomp" and "Viper's Drag".
He enjoyed success touring the United Kingdom and Ireland in the 1930s. He appeared in one of the first BBC television broadcasts. While in Britain, Waller also recorded a number of songs for EMI on their Compton Theatre organ located in their Abbey Road Studios in St John's Wood. He appeared in several feature films and short subject films, most notably Stormy Weather in 1943, which was released July 21, just months before his death. For the hit Broadway show Hot Chocolates, he and Razaf wrote "(What Did I Do to Be So) Black and Blue" (1929), which became a hit for Ethel Waters and Louis Armstrong.
Waller performed Bach organ pieces for small groups on occasion. Waller influenced many pre-bebop jazz pianists; Count Basie and Erroll Garner have both reanimated his hit songs. In addition to his playing, Waller was known for his many quips during his performances.
Between 1926 and the end of 1927, Waller recorded a series of pipe organ solo records. These represent the first time syncopated jazz compositions were performed on a full-sized church organ.
Death
Waller contracted pneumonia and died on a cross-country train trip near Kansas City, Missouri, on December 15, 1943. His final recording session was with an interracial group in Detroit, Michigan, that included white trumpeter Don Hirleman. Waller was returning to New York City from Los Angeles, after the smash success of Stormy Weather, and after a successful engagement at the Zanzibar Room, in Santa Monica California, during which he had fallen ill. More than 4,000 people attended his funeral in Harlem, which prompted Dr. Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., who delivered the eulogy, to say that Fats Waller "always played to a packed house." Afterwards he was cremated and his ashes were scattered, from an airplane piloted by an unidentified World War I black aviator, over Harlem. One of his surviving relatives is former Georgia Tech Yellow Jacket and current Baltimore Ravens tight end Darren Waller, who is Fats' paternal great-grandson.
Revival and awards
A Broadway musical revue showcasing Waller tunes entitled Ain't Misbehavin' was produced in 1978. (The show and a star of the show, Nell Carter, won Tony Awards.) The show opened at the Longacre Theatre and ran for more than 1600 performances. It was revived on Broadway in 1988. Performed by five African-American actors, the show included such songs as "Honeysuckle Rose", "This Joint Is Jumpin'", and "Ain't Misbehavin'".
Recordings of Fats Waller were inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame which is a special Grammy Award established in 1973 to honour recordings that are at least 25 years old and that have "qualitative or historical significance".
Probably the most talented pianist to keep the music of "Fats" Waller alive in the years after his death was Ralph Sutton, who focused his career on playing stride piano. Sutton was a great admirer of Waller, saying "I've never heard a piano man swing any better than Fats – or swing a band better than he could. I never get tired of him. Fats has been with me from the first, and he'll be with me as long as I live."
Actor and band leader Conrad Janis also did a lot to keep the stride piano music of "Fats" Waller and James P. Johnson alive. In 1949, as an 18-year-old, Janis put together a band of aging jazz greats, consisting of James P. Johnson (piano), Henry Goodwin (trumpet), Edmond Hall (clarinet), Pops Foster (bass) and Baby Dodds (drums), with Janis on trombone.

From Bach to the Beatles:
Musicians Julie Adams and Rick Smith, will perform on Thursday, January 17 at the Old Courthouse Museum in Inverness. Can you imagine a full orchestra playing in your living room? Alternatively, two lovers flirting in a symphony hall? It is a little bit of both that you get from world-renowned finger style guitarist Richard Smith and his wife, versatile cellist Julie Adams – and they serve up so much more. Julie Adams is one of the most diverse cellists on the music scene today. Raised in Dayton, Ohio, and classically trained at Interlochen Center for the Arts and the Cincinnati Conservatory, she has won many competitions and played in the most diverse musical settings. She has performed with orchestras in Chicago, Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati and Vero Beach. Richard started playing the guitar at age 5 and has never looked back. Focusing early on with the fingerstyle guitar of Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, he began transcribing classical music, Jazz, the gypsy style of Django Reinhardt, bluegrass, ragtime and the blues to Sousa marches. Their repertoire includes Scott Joplin rags, Sousa marches, Chopin, Mozart, and fiddle tunes. It ranges from jazz standards Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed and to Django Reinhardt gypsy swing, not to mention their intriguing originals. Richard and Julie deliver both, lightning fast barn-burners and beautiful ballads, occasionally spiced with gentle and witty vocals.
