Carrbridge Packhorse Bridge, Carrbridge
Tumblr media
One of the most iconic visitor attractions in the Cairngorms, the old packhorse bridge across the River Dulnain at Carrbridge was built in 1717. The bridge was built to allow funeral processions to access Duthil Church when the river was in spate. Because of this, the bridge was known locally as 'the coffin bridge'.It is the oldest known stone bridge in the Highlands.

I found this in a woodland the other week, and as usual when I find things like this in woodlands, I found myself thinking......"at what point does annoying litter become fascinating archaeology"?

Old Pack Horse Bridge, Scotland
The Old Packhorse Bridge, Carrbridge is one of the most popular attractions in the Cairngorms. Built in 1717, it is the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands. It has stood in its current state since 1829 after it was damaged by floods. Since then, it has stood up to the full force of the River Dulnain from snow thaw and many severe storms, that have seen water levels rise over the parapets.

The old packhorse bridge in Carrbridge in the Cairngorms National Park is the oldest stone bridge in the Highlands. The plaque near the viewpoint reads as follows: “At the beginning of the eighteenth century, to the inconvenience of both travellers and local people, there was no point at which the River Dulnain could be crossed when it was in spate, and burials at the Church of Duthil were often delayed. Brigadier-General Alexander Grant of Grant, Clan Chief, commissioned John Niccelsone, a mason from Ballindaloch, to build a bridge at Lynne of Dalrachney. Built between May and November 1717, the bridge was paid for out of stipends of the Parish of Duthill. Its parapets and side walls were badly damaged in the 18th century and again in the famous flood of August 1829, giving the appearance it still has today.” Sources: Instagram and scotlandinfo.eu

Here it changes from a gentle 1-in-500 through the station to 1-in-100 as the five mile climb to Slochd Summit commences. Soon it will stiffen further to 1-in-60, followed by a short one mile respite to 1-in-92 prior to the final two mile slog to the top at 1-in-70. River Dulnain bridged:
“Crossing the DulnainBR’s removal of the bridge over the River Dulnain made a significant physical gap in the line but from the earliest days of the railway it has also been a psychological and procedural obstacle. For example, the Highlands and Islands Development Board’s backing of the project was hampered by the fact that at the time the land north of the river was in the County of Moray, which was not part of the area in which the Board could operate. Replacing the bridge would therefore not just be a small physical step nearer to Grantown but also a leap into new procedural territory. Because of the remoteness of the site from roads and the environmental sensitivity of the river (part of a Special Protection Area) it would also be a challenging piece of construction.
The bridge design was undertaken by current advisor Mike Tough and planning permission obtained from the National Park Authority in 2012. The design was based on the re-use of a redundant railway bridge from Motherwell, where it had carried the railway line into Ravenscraig steelworks over the A725.
The bridge became an example of the goodwill and support which the railway enjoys in the local community and the professional railway world. A local engineering company adapted the girders to suit the Dulnain span’s length and alignment then shotblasted and painted the components free of charge; a local quarry operator donated ballast; and rail infrastructure company Corus Rail loaned us one of their most powerful rail-mounted cranes and its staff to erect the main spans.
After four working weekends during which volunteers took the track right up to the edge of the gap, the Corus crane erected the main spans on Valentine’s Day 2014 – coincidentally the same day on which the new Borders Railway’s Hardengreen Viaduct was erected!
Over the remainder of 2014 and through 2015 volunteer work parties completed the installation and fastening of cross beams to the main spans; the laying of a temporary work deck; installation of metal troughing and wooden longitudinal beams to carry the rails; laying and fastening of rails across the bridge; and conversion of the temporary decking timbers to permanent fixed safety decking.
The plan drawings of the bridge over the River Dulnain can be viewed on Highland Council’s website by clicking HERE or by searching the planning page of the Council’s website using application case reference 12/02438/FUL.
The Rails to Grantown section of the railway’s website [email protected] constains a number of images of the preparation, erection and completion of the bridge.”

After a break of a month or so it was lovely to be back out with a Ramblers group today and to get that #warmfuzzypostramblersfeeling again :) Badenoch & Strathspey Ramblers are the 53rd Ramblers Scotland group I've walked with since taking up the role of president, which means there is now just one to go before I step down from the position in six weeks' time! I think I might actually do it!!
And I must admit, I've missed those gorgeous, well-drained Cairngorms pine woodlands since leaving Mar Lodge, so it was lovely to be back amongst the pines today around Dulnain Bridge on Speyside.
Badenoch & Strathspey are a friendly bunch, and their home patch includes the Monadhliath, the high tops of the Cairngorms, the birch and pine woodlands of the Spey Valley from Laggan to beyond Grantown on Spey, beautiful Glen Feshie, and much more besides. Their next walk is Saturday 8th Feb when they'll be walking from Aviemore to Kincraig. Newbies most welcome!

There is a viewing area at street level above the bridge and steps down the bank of the river to a lower viewing platform almost at water level. You can also get a very good view of the bridge from the modern road bridge immediately to the east.
There is a footpath along the riverbank on the northern end of the bridge where you can catch glimpses of the bridge approach through the trees.
It really is a must see, and if you are travelling along the a9 going to, or coming back from Inverness, is only a short detour and a great place to stop off, stretch your legs and grab some photos.
