Plant of the Day
Saturday 8 June 2024
On the garden cottage in the Walled Garden, Gordon Castle, Scotland, the vigorous Rosa 'Albertine' (rose, rambler) was in full flower. The clusters of double, salmon-pink flowers were very fragrant on a warm June evening. This rambler grows best in an open, sunny site in moist but well-drained soil with an annual mulch of well-rotted manure or compost.

hi friends my friend sent this tik tok to me and i would like to ask you all to follow this link https://greens.scot/flamingoland and object to the destruction of Loch Lomond if you have the time and mental energy x
excerpt from the campaign below
[Flamingo Land are back. Over two years since they were forced to withdraw their application as a result of our campaign, the Yorkshire-based theme park operator have submitted new plans for a 'tourist resort' on the shores of Loch Lomond at Balloch. With your help, we can stop this – lodge an objection to their plans today.
Once again, their aim is to build a ‘resort’ on a massive scale, with 104 woodland lodges, water park, hotels, monorail and much more. This is far larger than the National Park’s Local Development Plan allows. It will add even more traffic to an existing congestion hot-spot, and turn open greenspace - popular with locals and visitors alike - into a branded holiday park.
While our campaign has been successful in saving most of the ancient woodland on site, planning permission being granted will result in all of the ancient woodland being sold to Flamingo Land, so there is no guarantee it will be safe in the long term.
Loch Lomond is world famous for its natural beauty. We must do all we can to preserve it. Many local people have already lodged an objection, as have the Woodland Trust and Ramblers Scotland.
Last time we lodged a record 60,000 objections, making this the most unpopular application in Scottish history. They were instrumental in forcing Flamingo Land to withdraw their plans. But as this is a new application, none of those objections will be counted this time, meaning you must lodge a new objection.]

Horror moment off-leash dog mauls helpless cows as ramblers watch…after outrage over American Bully biting police horse
A SHOCKING video shows the moment an out-of-control dog attacks Highland cows and their calves just days after an American Bully savagely attacked a police horse. The footage was filmed at Pollok Country Park in Glasgow, Scotland, and shows the dog relentlessly biting at the legs and tail of one of the cows before turning […]

Walking group fighting fresh plans for Coul Links golf course in the Highlands 'that will cross John o'Groats Trail' | UK News
A walking group has launched a petition to challenge fresh plans to build a golf course within an area of sand dunes in the Scottish Highlands. Ramblers Scotland said it is “shocked and extremely concerned” over the proposal to develop an 18-hole course at Coul Links near Embo. It said the plans would permanently transform the area, harm the natural landscape, and affect access. The group claim…

I just read TTS and let me tell you that your story has made me read again and like literature again, your fic is so special so thank you thank you. Did you ever think about writing it from harry pov or doing a secuel?
omg thank you <333 that's such a lovely thing to say. i love reading the most and i know how special those works that make us enjoy it again after a drought are, so it means a lot to me that tts had that effect on you.
tbh i'm really proud of tts and i'm really happy with where i left the story so revisiting it is not something i'm particularly interested in. yk i wrote it while i was living in edinburgh and it became my love letter to scotland in many ways. it's a snapshot of my time there and filled with easter eggs only i can understand. to touch that again wouldn't feel right now that i've left, if that makes sense? as for a harry pov.... i don't know... i picked louis as the pov character because that's what felt right for the story and, for sure, i think there would be a great story hidden in harry's point of view, not to mention as a writing exercise it could be challenging, but for now i don't see myself doing it. which isn't to say i never would... as i said, i think it could be a cool challenge, but i'd really have to reimmerse myself into tts. it's been so long since i wrote it.
but for now, i'm almost 90k deep into a social network fic (that virtually no one is interested in but I'm having fun with it!) that i really want to finish since it's the most i've written in like... 3 years. and i have an original romance idea that i'd like to develop after that. it's a bit tts vibe so i think some of you guys might enjoy it if i write it!! if yall are willing to follow me into ~original fiction land i guess haha. so yeah, it's not really a project for now, but it's not a firm ~ no forever kind of thing.
well, the sequel idea is mostly a no forever tbh. i'm happy with where i left tts. i'm proud of the ending <3 harry pov is a shrug we'll see if i get tickled by the challenge eventually.
anyways thank you for the lovely compliment, hope that answers your questions. sorry i'm a bit of a rambler x

So here it is, a collection of piccies from my walk with Bute Ramblers on Thursday. The weather was foul on the way to Weymss Bay and over to Rothesay, and although it got windier as the day progressed, the frontal rain cleared to sunshine and showers......which meant stunning west coast views coming in and out of torrential hail in that very west coast way ;-)
This particular walk wasn't part of the main programme of winter walks, rather it was a recce that some of the group's members were doing for the annual Ramblers Scotland walking festival, The Gathering......which is being hosted by Bute Ramblers this year :) We walked from the Glenburn Hotel, along the seafront from Rothesay to Port Bannatyne, before heading west along the West Island Way and doubling back along a nice ridge line to Ettrick Bay :)
I'd not done much walking on Bute before, other than the southern tip of the island, so to see a bit more of the place was great. The west side feels so different to the more sheltered east.....made all the more special by the looming presence of Arran on the near horizon.
Such a nice walk in great company. Bute Ramblers walk every Saturday, sometimes on a Thursday as well, and all newcomers are welcome: https://www.buteramblers.org.uk/

The fragrant double, salmon-pink flowers of Rosa 'Albertine' (rose) always look good against the soft tones of an old brick wall. This is a large and vigorous rambler rose with strong thorny, reddish stems and dark, glossy foliage.

Blackness and the Bridges
Blackness and the Bridges

One of our Ramblers walks in January started and ended in Abercorn, West Lothian and took us past Hopetoun House, along the River Forth foreshore with views of Blackness Castle and past a small settlement called Society. Our return route brought us back past Midhope Castle, which seems to have gained some recent prominence as one of the filming locations for Outlander.

The different locations we…

Happy 92nd Birthday singer and TV personality  Jimmie Macgregor.
Because of his age, I give a sigh of relief every year this birthday comes along.....
Jimmie Macgregor was born in Springburn, Glasgow, and grew up in a tenement and then a council house, about which he has said: “Our house was a focus for people to gather and make music…. I had aunties and cousins who were chorus girls.” After doing his national service, he studied at Glasgow School of Art, graduating in the mid-1950s and becoming a potter and teacher.
It’s hard to separate Jimmie from his musical partner Robin Hall, who wiki say met in 1960, but a wee bit digging I found out they actually met in 1959 in Vienna at a youth music festival. Although they didn’t know each other back then, they were sent on stage together, their voices blended well enough to attract praise from the legendary American singer and political activist Paul Robeson, who was appearing on the same concert.
Only too aware of the significance of Robeson’s patronage, MacGregor suggested that they should continue as a duo and pooling their resources and experience – MacGregor had sung with the Chas McDevitt Skiffle Group, the Steve Benbow Folk Four and The City Ramblers; Hall had already recorded a series of EPs and shared MacGregor’s passion for blues, skiffle, jazz and folk music – they launched themselves on the London folk scene.
Their big break came when their agent phoned BBC TV’s Tonight show and suggested that what this popular tea-time current affairs programme needed for Burns Night was a song by Scotland’s national bard – and he could provide two Scottish singers who were tailor-made for the job. It was a lie. Neither Hall nor MacGregor, despite their wide repertoires, knew a single Burns song. So they rehearsed Rantin’ Rovin’ Robin in the taxi on the way to the studio and on the strength of their performance on the programme that night they were given a week’s trial that led to a ten-year residency. they went from singing to around 50 in the cellar bar folk singing circles in London to an audience of millions overnight.
The release of the Decca single “Football Crazy” in 1960 received a great deal of airplay and became one of their most popular songs, which they In the early sixties Robin and Jimmie regularly (though not exclusively) performed as part of the Galliards, a quartet made up of Hall, MacGregor, Shirley Bland and Leon Rosselson. Jimmie and Shirley married in the mid 50’s and subsequently were both members of the City Ramblers. Leon Rosselson was responsible for all of the of the group’s arrangements. Leon went on to become one the UK’s best songwriters and solo performers.
From 1961 to 1964, Robin and Jimmie performed (with and without The Galliards), appearing regularly on radio, and are particularly remembered for the series Hullabaloo. They went on to tour the world, record more than 20 albums, and appear on countless television programs. Other series’ that brought them great acclaim and recognition were The White Heather Club, which they hosted for five years, and Out and About with Robin and Jimmie. With superb harmonies, Hall and MacGregor’s large repertoire of songs, many of which they introduced during this period, have gone on to become folk standards; and yet their contribution to the folk scene has gone seemingly unnoticed in many circles.
In 1981 the duo called it quits, primarily Robins decision; he had never enjoyed good health, and didn’t really like performing.
Macgregor went on to make television programmes, many on long-distance walking. These included The West Highland Way, In the footsteps of Bonnie Prince Charlie and Macgregor’s Gathering, a long-running show for Radio Scotland. He has been involved in various conservation organisations, among them the Association for the Protection of Rural Scotland.
From what I can gather Jimmie is enjoying his retirement, there has not been many stories about him in the news lately, they all date a few years back. His Facebook page has not been up since December 2016, wherever you are and and whatever you are doing enjoy your birthday Jimmie and I look forward to announcing your 93rd next March.
I unashamedly have chosen another Burns song..........A Man's A Man......
