Saturday, July 6th
This morning I went to a cafe to make a game plan for the next few weeks. Surprisingly I’m not super jet lagged other than waking up at 6am.
The last two times I was here I saw the major tourist sites like the palaces. This visit I’m determined to visit more off the beaten track places. I’m particularly really interested in Korean history, especially in the past century. They were violently invaded by Japan in 1910 and regained independence in 1948, only to almost immediately be plunged into the Korean War by the USSR and the US, and afterwards endured a US implemented military dictatorship, only becoming free from this in the late 80’s and early 90’s.
I’ve been learning a lot about Korean history this past year. Korea has such a painful history and such a beautiful, proud, and strong culture, and I want to learn more about it.
The first place I visited today was Tapgol Park, which was the site where Korea first declared independence from Japan during the March 1st Movement of 1919. The initial protest in this park sparked a series of over 1,800 peaceful protests against Japan with over 2 million participants, they were violently suppressed with over 7,500 deaths.
After visiting there I walked around the Insadong neighborhood and did some shopping. There’s a trend of having nonsensical English phrases on shirts here which I find hilarious, I’m pretty sure they make these shirts strange on purpose as a gimmick, but they are still hilarious. By total happenstance I ended up at a cafe that I visited during my first visit to Seoul in 2016, a poop themed cafe where all the drinks are served in toilet bowl shaped mugs 😂
Then I was supposed to go on a food tour at Gwangjang Market but I got off at the wrong metro stop and was 5 minutes late and the tour left without me. So I wandered around the market by myself. Gwangjang Market is a huge market, one half is a textile market, the other half is a food market that started out just selling street food to workers but eventually expanded into one of the biggest markets in Seoul for street food. I had 잡채 (japchae, glass noodles) and 김치만두 (kimchi mandu, dumplings with kimchi inside). It was very good.
Then I made a fool of myself by trying to buy juice and then realizing too late that I didn’t have enough cash so I apologized to the worker and ran down the street to the atm to get more cash. Ugh.
Then I headed over to the Hongdae neighborhood and did some more shopping and got caught in the torrential rain. It’s rainy season in July here, and currently there is a monsoon going by until at least Wednesday. The rain itself isn’t too bad most of the time, but walking in puddles for several hours is definitely not fun for my feet.

Qatar's Fusion Feast: Blending Cultures in Food Services
Tumblr media
Qatar, a small but vibrant nation on the northeastern coast of the Arabian Peninsula, is renowned for its rich cultural tapestry and rapid modernization. One of the most fascinating aspects of this cultural amalgamation is reflected in its food service market. The Qatar food service market has emerged as a dynamic arena where diverse culinary traditions converge, creating a unique and flavorful fusion feast.
A Melting Pot of Flavors
Qatar's strategic location as a global hub and its booming expatriate population have significantly influenced its culinary landscape. The food service market in Qatar is a testament to the country's openness to different cultures and cuisines. From traditional Qatari dishes to international delicacies, the gastronomic offerings are as varied as they are delicious.
The Rise of Fusion Cuisine
Fusion cuisine has become a defining trend in Qatar's food service market. Restaurants and eateries are increasingly experimenting with blending local ingredients and flavours with those from other cultures. This creative culinary approach not only satisfies the diverse palate of residents and visitors but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the rich culinary heritage of different regions.
Popular examples of fusion cuisine in Qatar include:
Qatari-Asian Fusion: Combining the spices and cooking techniques of Qatari cuisine with the fresh and vibrant flavours of Asian dishes.
Mediterranean-Arabic Fusion: Merging the healthy and light elements of Mediterranean food with the hearty and aromatic components of Arabic cuisine.
Western-Middle Eastern Fusion: Integrating Western cooking styles and ingredients with traditional Middle Eastern recipes, resulting in innovative and delectable dishes.
The Influence of Global Brands
The Qatar food service market has also seen an influx of global food chains and franchises, each bringing its unique culinary traditions to the local scene. These international brands adapt their menus to cater to local tastes while introducing new flavours and dining experiences. This cross-cultural exchange enriches the food service market, making it a melting pot of global gastronomy.
Traditional Meets Modern
While fusion cuisine and international brands play a significant role in the Qatar food service market, traditional Qatari food remains a cornerstone. Local dishes such as Machbous (a spiced rice dish with meat or fish), Harees (a porridge-like dish made of wheat and meat), and Luqaimat (sweet dumplings) are cherished by both locals and tourists. These traditional foods often find their way into fusion dishes, creating a delightful blend of the old and the new.
Sustainability and Local Sourcing
As the food service market in Qatar continues to evolve, there is a growing emphasis on sustainability and local sourcing. Chefs and restaurateurs are increasingly turning to locally produced ingredients, not only to support local farmers but also to ensure the freshness and quality of their dishes. This trend is particularly evident in the rise of farm-to-table dining experiences, where the journey from farm to plate is celebrated.
The Future of Qatar's Food Service Market
Looking ahead, the Qatar food service market is poised for continued growth and innovation. The fusion of cultures will remain a driving force, with new culinary trends emerging as the country continues to welcome people from all over the world. The focus on sustainability and local sourcing is likely to intensify, reflecting a global shift towards more environmentally conscious dining practices.
In conclusion, Qatar's food service market is a vibrant and ever-evolving tapestry of flavours, cultures, and culinary traditions. The fusion feast that characterises this market not only delights the taste buds but also tells the story of a nation that embraces diversity and innovation. As Qatar continues to blend cultures in its food services, it sets a delectable example for the world to follow.

Fractals, Fabulosity, and Funky Mathematics: The Ultimate Guide to Becoming a Geometric Picasso
Ladies, gentlemen, and my beloved pixelated pancake pals, gather 'round as we embark on a journey of mathematical madness, fractal fantasies, and algorithmic absurdities! Today, we’re diving headfirst into the wildly wonderful world of mathematical art and fractal geometry—where numbers meet artistry and produce visuals that would make even Salvador Dali question his sanity.
First off, let’s talk fractals. Imagine your life as a series of TikTok challenges, each one more bizarre and addictive than the last. Now, picture those challenges repeating infinitely, like a never-ending loop of “Renegade” dances. That, my dear digital dumplings, is the essence of fractal geometry—patterns that replicate themselves on every conceivable scale, from the minuscule to the monstrous. And trust me, it’s not just mind-blowing; it’s like seeing your kale salad morph into a hyper-dimensional dragon while you’re still trying to figure out the latest Snapchat filter.
Now, grab your algebraic abacus and let’s conjure up some chaos. We’re diving into the mathematical cauldron to cook up visual masterpieces using nothing but equations and algorithms. Yes, my curious cacti, you heard right. Equations—the same dread-inducing beasts that haunted your high school nightmares—can transform into magical wands of artistic brilliance. It’s like Hermione Granger discovered an alternative career as an avant-garde artist, waving her wand to summon spirals and swirls out of thin air.
But hold your existential dread—this isn’t your grandmother’s math class. We’re talking about equations with the pizzazz of Tony Stark’s latest tech, the complexity of Loki’s schemes, and the aesthetic appeal of a perfectly filtered Instagram post. Take the Mandelbrot set, for example. Named after the legend himself, Benoît B. Mandelbrot, this set is like the Marvel Cinematic Universe of mathematics—an infinite saga of intrigue, drama, and endless detail. Zoom into one part of the Mandelbrot set, and you'll find an identical pattern, just like when you zoom in on celebrity drama and find more drama.
Speaking of celebrities, let’s pause for a hot second to imagine if Kim Kardashian were a fractal. Every time you zoomed in on her life, you’d find a new layer of glam, gossip, and grandeur—kind of like her Instagram feed, only with more mathematical rigor. The same goes for fractal art. Each zoom reveals more layers, more depth, and more opportunities to lose your mind in a labyrinth of logarithms.
Now, let’s get our hands dirty with some practical applications. You, yes you, can create your own fractal art with nothing more than a computer, some fancy software, and a sprinkle of creative insanity. Programs like Apophysis or Mandelbulb 3D allow you to play god (or at least a very eccentric deity) in your digital universe. Want to create a swirling vortex of colors that looks like it was pulled straight out of Doctor Strange’s spellbook? Go ahead! Feel like summoning a forest of fractal trees that’d make J.R.R. Tolkien weep with envy? The power is yours, my pixelated Picasso.
But wait, there’s more! The wonders of fractal geometry aren’t confined to your computer screen. No, siree! These psychedelic patterns can be found all around you, from the spiraling shells of snails to the branching networks of your neurons. It’s like the universe is one giant, infinitely complex canvas, painted by a mad artist with a penchant for repetition and a flair for the dramatic.
For those of you still skeptically sipping your overpriced lattes, consider this: fractal geometry isn’t just a nerdy hobby for math geeks and art freaks. It’s a tool with real-world applications that’ll blow your unassuming minds. From predicting stock market trends (yeah, Wall Street has a fractal fetish) to modeling the growth patterns of cities, fractals are everywhere. They’re the unsung heroes of science and art, bridging the gap between logic and creativity in a way that’s as beautiful as it is baffling.
Now, let’s talk pop culture, because what’s a deep dive into the mathematical abyss without a few nods to our favorite distractions? If you’ve ever watched “Rick and Morty,” you’ve seen fractals in action. Remember the time-traveling snake episode? The concept of time loops within loops is a playful nod to fractal geometry. Or take the mind-bending visuals in “Inception.” Those infinite staircases and recursive dream layers? Pure fractal genius. Even the dizzying special effects in the “Doctor Strange” movies owe a debt to our fractal friends.
But let’s bring it home with a personal touch. Imagine you, yes you, as the proud owner of a fractal masterpiece. You could hang it on your wall and impress your friends, who will think you’ve suddenly become some sort of artistic genius. Or better yet, create a fractal-based fashion line. Picture yourself strutting down the street in a jacket that looks like it was designed by Escher on acid. You’ll be the talk of the town, the toast of TikTok, the meme that keeps on giving.
So, my fractal-loving friends, the next time you’re bored and contemplating the mysteries of the universe—or just scrolling through your endless social media feeds—remember this: mathematical art and fractal geometry aren’t just brainy buzzwords. They’re your ticket to a world of endless creativity, mind-bending beauty, and a never-ending supply of nerdy street cred. Embrace the chaos, dive into the fractals, and unleash your inner geometric Picasso. Because in the grand, infinite loop of life, we’re all just patterns waiting to be discovered.

Exploring the Enduring Legacy of Chinese Culture: A Tapestry of Tradition and Influence
Tumblr media
According to "The Beauty of Asia" blog,
"Chinese culture is deeply rooted in tradition and has influenced neighboring countries in areas such as language, cuisine, martial arts, and traditional medicine. The Chinese language, Mandarin, is the most widely spoken language in the world."
In the vast tapestry of global culture, few threads are as intricate and enduring as that of Chinese tradition. Stretching back millennia, the rich heritage of China has woven its way into the very fabric of neighboring countries, leaving an indelible mark on everything from language and cuisine to martial arts and medicine.
Language: The Towering Pillar of Communication
At the heart of Chinese culture lies its language, a linguistic tapestry as diverse and nuanced as the nation itself. With a history spanning over 3,000 years, Chinese characters not only serve as a means of communication but also as a vessel for cultural transmission. From the sprawling metropolises of Beijing and Shanghai to the remote villages of rural China, the language serves as a unifying force, binding together people from all walks of life.
Yet, its influence extends far beyond China's borders. Through centuries of trade and cultural exchange, Chinese characters have seeped into the lexicons of neighboring countries such as Japan, Korea, and Vietnam, shaping the very foundation of their written languages and imbuing them with a sense of shared heritage.
Cuisine: A Symphony of Flavors
No exploration of Chinese culture would be complete without delving into its world-renowned cuisine. From the fiery spices of Sichuan to the delicate flavors of Cantonese cuisine, Chinese food is as diverse as the country itself. Rooted in centuries-old culinary traditions, Chinese cuisine reflects the nation's agricultural abundance, regional diversity, and cultural heritage.
But the influence of Chinese cuisine doesn't stop at the country's borders. Throughout Asia and beyond, dishes like dumplings, noodles, and stir-fries have become beloved staples, their flavors adapted and reinterpreted to suit local palates. Whether enjoyed in a bustling street market or a Michelin-starred restaurant, Chinese cuisine continues to captivate taste buds and inspire culinary innovation around the globe.
Martial Arts: The Art of Discipline
From the graceful movements of Tai Chi to the lightning-fast strikes of Kung Fu, martial arts occupy a central place in Chinese culture. Rooted in ancient traditions of self-defense and spiritual cultivation, these disciplines are more than just physical exercises—they are paths to self-discovery and enlightenment.
But the influence of Chinese martial arts extends far beyond the dojo. Throughout Asia and beyond, practitioners have spread the teachings of Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and other styles, influencing everything from Hollywood blockbusters to modern fitness trends. Yet, at its core, the practice remains a testament to the enduring power of tradition and the human spirit.
Traditional Medicine: Healing Body and Soul
In the realm of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the body is seen not as a collection of separate parts, but as a holistic system in which balance is key. Drawing on centuries of accumulated knowledge, TCM encompasses a wide array of practices, from acupuncture and herbal medicine to massage and qigong.
Yet, the influence of TCM extends far beyond the realm of medicine. In recent years, practices like acupuncture and herbalism have gained popularity around the world, offering holistic alternatives to Western medical approaches. Rooted in ancient wisdom and guided by principles of balance and harmony, traditional Chinese medicine continues to offer healing and hope to millions.
The influence of Chinese culture stretches far and wide, shaping the lives and landscapes of people around the world. From the language we speak to the food we eat, the traditions of China continue to enrich and inspire, weaving a tapestry of diversity, resilience, and shared humanity.

大家好! Pa had a stomach upset last weekend, so we pushed back our meal and I began my exploring adventure early. After exercise and a cool shower on Saturday, I walked to a popular coffee shop along the main road, a 5 - 8 minute walk either way. Our country isn't known as the 'Garden City' for nothing (Joseph Borrell comes to mind); trees and shrubs line walkways and streets, beautiful against blue skies and poofy clouds. The greenery keeps the surrounding air cool, making a walk pleasant despite our tropical climate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
At the coffee shop, the queue at the cai fan (mixed veggie rice) stall stretched far back, so I looked around to see what else there was to eat. A stall selling soy sauce chicken rice made my mouth water and I had to order from them. The meal was delicious and nutritionally balanced, with steamed chicken, steamed egg, cucumber, oyster sauce bak choy, fluffy rice and a bowl of chicken broth. After eating, I relaxed with an iced local coffee before strolling home. The experience was so pleasant that I decided to do the same on Sunday.
Tumblr media
Breakfast food here tends to be less healthy if we dine out, except for, maybe zhou (porridge) or dumpling soup. I found this to be true at the coffee shop. Fish is only available at the cai fan stall from lunch time onwards; their breakfast dishes were oily and didn't appeal to me, thus, I chose xiao guo tang (mini wok soup). Fish and pork balls, fish cake slices, veggies, her keow (fish dumplings), lean pork and an egg were served in clear broth, kept hot by a small fire lit under the tiny pot. It was the healthiest Sunday breakfast I found at the coffee shop (yummy too!) and it was good enough.
Tumblr media
I was determined to eat from the cai fan stall, so on Monday, the final day of the wonderful long weekend, I walked back to the coffee shop. The only fish dishes available were fried or sweet and sour (yuck); I chose the lesser of the 2 evils. Besides that, I selected fu rong dan (a tasty shredded carrot and bean sprout omelette) as well as stir fried okra to go with my zhou. Not as healthy as I would've liked the meal to be (would've been better with steamed fish), but it was nutritious and balanced, and that will have to do. It was a very hot afternoon, perfect for iced local coffee before strolling home.
Tumblr media
It was a fabulous long weekend; I caught up on rest, danced up a sweat and did some walking on top of my daily exercise routine. I also found meals at the coffee shop which, whilst not the epitome of clean eating, were still moderately healthy. Similar dining places line the road and across the street, and I'll keep them in mind the next time I explore my country in search of easily accessible, moderately healthy food. I've had fun and hope you find the health articles helpful. 下次见!
