where would one actually watch critical role? I see you (and some others) talk about it a lot and it seems really good
The VODS are on YouTube. Campaign 1 and early Campaign 2 is on Geek & Sundry's channel. The rest are on Critical Role's. Live streams are Thursday at 7 pm PST/PDT on Twitch (CriticalRole) or YouTube.
If you watch everything in order you'll get more jokes and the significance of some characters, but it's literally longer than all of the Dr. Who TV series and all of Star Trek combined. They've also gotten a lot better over the years.
So I'd say start with campaign 3, watch The Legend of Vox Machina cartoon (Amazon Prime). It's loosely based on Campaign 1 but they were heavily involved in every state of production and making what they believe is a tighter version. It hits all the really key beats but how it gets between them is different. It's very funny, more overtly queer, very violent, pretty scary in places, very bad ass, and also so heartfelt.
There's also an aftershow for Campaign 3 called 4-Sided dive that I highly recommend watching as you goo because it helps clarify where there characters are at with their decisions and get background that doesn't fit directly into the show. (They're was an aftershow for C1 & C2 called Talks Machina, but the host turned out to be a dangerous abuser and the show has been pulled.)
If you do watch Campaign 1, know that there's a really distributive and rude player names Orion that started with them that has main character syndrome. Many people recommend just starting at E24 to avoid most of him before he was fired. (Even the cartoon invents events to set up the first two episodes and comes into canon around E24) I do think there's some good stuff in those early episodes, but if you just need to be rid of him most people these days skip it.

ELIZABETH TAYLOR
February 27, 1932
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Rosemond Taylor was born on February 27, 1932, in Hampstead Garden Suburb, London. She received dual British-American citizenship at birth, as her parents were United States citizens. The family lived in London during Taylor's childhood. In early 1939, the Taylors returned to the United States due to fear of impending war in Europe.
Tumblr media
In California, Taylor's mother (a former stage actress) was frequently told that her daughter should audition for films. She made her screen debut in There’s One Born Every Minute (1942). She was ten years old. Two years later she played the leading role in National Velvet.  This launched a meteoric film career that won her two Oscars (1961 and 1967).
Lucille Ball first met Elizabeth Taylor in an arranged ‘set visit’ during the shooting of 1953′s The Long, Long Trailer.  After that, they appeared twice on the same television shows, but did not share screen time.
“’A Star Is Born’ World Premiere” (1954) ~ a live television broadcast of the red carpet interviews before film’s world premiere.
“Sunday Showcase: A Tribute to Eleanor Roosevelt on Her Diamond Jubilee” (1959)
Tumblr media
Although she started appearing on television in the early 1950s, her scripted TV debut came in 1970 when Lucille Ball invited her to appear (along with her priceless engagement ring and her actor husband, Richard Burton) on a very special episode of “Here’s Lucy” titled “Lucy Meets the Burtons” (HL S3;E1).
Tumblr media
For this show, a special Guest Star credit was created. Liz got top billing!    Although this episode kicked off the third season, it was filmed much later and moved up as the season premiere airing on September 14, 1970.
Tumblr media
It ultimately became CBS’s highest rated show on the air for the 1971-72 television season.  It was also the best remembered episode of the entire series.
Tumblr media
This show’s plot was built around the real-life publicity achieved when Richard Burton bought his wife Elizabeth Taylor a 68 carat Cartier diamond ring worth over a million dollars. Property Master Ken Westcott created two replica rings for the medium and long shots which were crafted from chandelier crystals. Although he wanted to keep one after the shoot, Ball took one and Taylor took the other.
Tumblr media
A thirty minute documentary film “Lucy Meets the Burtons: A Comedic Gem” was included on DVD release of “Here’s Lucy” season 3. It includes interviews with Lucie Arnaz, Carole Cook, and behind the scenes footage.
Although this was their first and last time acting together, Taylor and Ball appeared on several television specials together, although they usually did not share screen time.
“Dinah!” (1977) ~ Dinah Shore interviews the First Ladies of Entertainment. Taylor is interviewed via remote telephone connection.
“Happy Birthday, Bob” (1978) ~ 75th birthday salute to Bob Hope at the Kennedy Center in Washington D.C. Taylor talks about the previous evening’s reception featuring President Jimmy Carter and reads a message from Prince Philip, The Duke of Edinburgh. Taylor talks about Hope’s contributions to the USO.
“General Electric's All-Star Anniversary” (1978)
“Women I Love: Beautiful But Funny” (1982) ~ Bob Hope takes a look back at the beautiful and funny women he has worked with over the years.
“Bob Hope's Unrehearsed Antics of the Stars” (1984)
“Bob Hope's High-Flying Birthday” (1987)
Tumblr media
Elizabeth Taylor’s personal life was no less dramatic than her on screen roles. She was married eight times to seven men, marrying Richard Burton twice.
Larry Fortensky (1991-1996)
John Warner (1976-1982)
Richard Burton (1975-1976)
Richard Burton (1964-1974) 1 child
Eddie Fisher (1959-1964)
Mike Todd (1957-1958, his death) 1 child
Michael Wilding (1952-1957) 2 children
Conrad Hilton (1950-1951)
Taylor’s later years were spent doing philanthropic work, concentrating on AIDS and LGBTQ rights. Following her conversion to Judaism, Taylor became an active supporter of Jewish and Zionist causes.
In 2000, Taylor was designated a dame, the female equivalent of knight, on the queen's coveted New Year's list of titles and awards.
"Well, I've always been a 'broad.' Now it's a great honor to be a dame!"
Dame Elizabeth Taylor died on March 23, 2011 of congestive heart failure at age 79.
Tumblr media
TAYLOR MADE!
Although she may not have appeared, Elizabeth Taylor’s name was mentioned on Lucille Ball’s sitcoms many times.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy is Matchmaker” (ILL S2;E27 ~ May 25, 1953) Elizabeth Taylor’s name is not mentioned, but her face is quickly seen on camera on the cover of a magazine in a newsstand!
Tumblr media
Although her name is never stated, Elizabeth Taylor was clearly one of the influences when Lucy donned “The Black Wig” (ILL S3;E26 ~ April 19, 1954). Taylor sported short dark hair throughout much of the 1950s, including in her latest film at the time, The Girl Who Had Everything. Instead, Lucy gives Italian actresses like Gina Lollobridgida and Anna Magnani the credit.
Tumblr media
In “Ricky’s Movie Offer” (ILL S4;E6 – November 8, 1954) Lucy and Ethel accidentally knock out talent scout Ben Benjamin. Lucy revives him and tries to act casual, as if in mid-conversation. “Do you mean to tell me that Elizabeth Taylor looks just as pretty off screen as she does on?”
Tumblr media
In “Hollywood Anniversary” (ILL S4;E24 ~ April 4, 1955) the list of celebrity guests supposedly coming to Lucy’s anniversary party includes Elizabeth Taylor and Michael Wilding, her second husband.
Tumblr media
Incredibly (or perhaps legally), Liz Taylor’s name IS NOT explicitly mentioned in “Lucy Plays Cleopatra” (TLS S2;E1 ~ September 30, 1963) although the premise was clearly influenced by the smash hit film that came out that same year starring Taylor as Cleo. She was the third to play the Egyptian queen on film, after Theda Bara (1917) and Claudette Colbert (1934).
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Goes to a Hollywood Premiere” (TLS S4;E20 ~ February 7, 1966) one of Lucy’s rare movie magazines has a (fictional) article titled “Marriage is Not for Me” (supposedly) written by Elizabeth Taylor when she was 12 years old! By that time, Taylor’s love life was fodder for Hollywood gossip mongers and tabloids.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Dates Dean Martin” (TLS S4;E21 ~ February 14, 1966)  Eddie Feldman (Dean Martin) says that while Lucy is attractive, she is no Liz Taylor. Or Gina Lollobrigida. Or Brigitte Bardot.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and the Starmaker” (TLS S6;E4 ~ October 2, 1967), after singing for Lucy, Tommy (Frankie Avalon) says he never thought he had more than an average voice. Lucy replies “if that is an average voice Elizabeth Taylor is an average housewife.”
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and Robert Goulet” (TLS S6;E8 ~ October 30, 1967) Lucy Carmichael says she once entered an Elizabeth Taylor look-alike contest and never even heard from them!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy and the Lost Star” (TLS S6;E22 ~ February 26, 1968) starring Joan Crawford, Lucy says that “Mr. Mooney wouldn’t lend a dime to Richard Burton even if he left Elizabeth Taylor as collateral.”
Tumblr media
In “A Date For Lucy” (HL S1;E19 ~ February 10, 1969) Lucy and Mary Jane fantasize about dream dates for an upcoming soiree. They mention Richard Burton, but add that Elizabeth Taylor wouldn’t approve.
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Stunt Man” (TLS S4;E5 ~ October 18, 1965), Mr. Mooney jokingly says that he’s testing for the male lead in Liz Taylor’s next picture!
Tumblr media
In “Lcuy Goes on Her Last Blind Date” (HL S5;E16 ~ January 8, 1973), when Vanda is trying on the engagement ring Ben gave Lucy, she says “Liz Taylor, eat your heart out.”
Tumblr media
In “Milton Berle is the Life of the Party” (HL S6;E19 ~ February 11, 1974) Elizabeth Taylor is just one of the more than 15 celebrity names mentioned!

❍❍ TV MOVIE ❍❍❍ The first television shows were experimental, sporadic broadcasts viewable only within a very short range from the broadcast tower starting in the 1930s. Televised events such as the 1936 Summer Olympics in Germany, the 19340 coronation of King George VI in the UK, and David Sarnoff’s famous introduction at the 1939 New York World’s Fair in the US spurred a growth in the medium, but World War II put a halt to development until after the war. The 19440 World MOVIE inspired many Americans to buy their first television set and then in 1948, the popular radio show Texaco Star Theater made the move and became the first weekly televised variety show, earning host Milton Berle the name “Mr Television” and demonstrating that the medium was a stable, modern form of entertainment which could attract advertisers. The first national live television broadcast in the US took place on September 4, 1951 when President Harry Truman’s speech at the Japanese Peace Treaty Conference in San Francisco was transmitted over AT&T’s transcontinental cable and microwave radio relay system to broadcast stations in local markets. The first national color broadcast (the 1954 Tournament of Roses Parade) in the US occurred on January 1, 1954. During the following ten years most network broadcasts, and nearly all local programming, continued to be in black-and-white. A color transition was announced for the fall of 1965, during which over half of all network prime-time programming would be broadcast in color. The first all-color prime-time season came just one year later. In 19402, the last holdout among daytime network shows converted to color, resulting in the first completely all-color network season. ❍❍❍ Formats and Genres ❍❍❍ See also: List of genres § Film and television formats and genres Television shows are more varied than most other forms of media due to the wide variety of formats and genres that can be presented. A show may be fictional (as in comedies and dramas), or non-fictional (as in documentary, news, and reality television). It may be topical (as in the case of a local newscast and some made-for-television films), or historical (as in the case of many documentaries and fictional MOVIE). They could be primarily instructional or educational, or entertaining as is the case in situation comedy and game shows.[citation needed] A drama program usually features a set of actors playing characters in a historical or contemporary setting. The program follows their lives and adventures. Before the 1980s, shows (except for soap opera-type serials) typically remained static without story arcs, and the main characters and premise changed little.[citation needed] If some change happened to the characters’ lives during the episode, it was usually undone by the end. Because of this, the episodes could be broadcast in any order.[citation needed] Since the 1980s, many MOVIE feature progressive change in the plot, the characters, or both. For instance, Hill Street Blues and St. Elsewhere were two of the first American prime time drama television MOVIE to have this kind of dramatic structure,[4][better source needed] while the later MOVIE Babylon 5 further exemplifies such structure in that it had a predetermined story running over its intended five-season run.[citation needed] In 2012, it was reported that television was growing into a larger component of major media companies’ revenues than film.[5] Some also noted the increase in quality of some television programs. In 2012, Academy-Award-winning film director Steven Soderbergh, commenting on ambiguity and complexity of character and narrative, stated: “I think those qualities are now being seen on television and that people who want to see stories that have those kinds of qualities are watching television. ❍❍❍ Thank’s For All And Happy Watching❍❍❍ Find all the movies that you can stream online, including those that were screened this week. i LOVE the sitcom the King of Queens. It’s really sexist and fatphobic and awful in all the way sitcoms from the era are, but i’ve been watching it since I was a kid and i love it despite the flaws
however, since i moved out of my parents house and don’t have access to regular cable i have only watched it a handful of times. since october of 2016, maybe four times.
every single time has been the Bubka Penis episode
this is not by choice. it is by pure coincidence that when i go to Hulu’s live TV and find the King of Queens playing, it is S06 E24 “Awful Bigamy” (TV-PG, 21 mins, aired May 19, 2004) and i watch Kevin James try to make various women laugh at the name Bubka Penis
i have seen every episode a hundred times. i don’t pay loads of attention to it when it’s on but just the sounds are a comforting layer of nostalgia. i could turn an episode on tomorrow or in two years, I can;t tell you when i’ll think to look for it again. but i CAN guarantee one thing
it will be Bubka Penis

COME ON, KISS ME AGAIN!』

DICK PATTERSON
April 11, 1929
Tumblr media
Dick Patterson was born Richard Neal Patterson in Clear Lake, Iowa, in 1929.  In 1961, he got his ‘big break’ on Broadway replacing Dick Van Dyke in the original cast of the musical Bye Bye Birdie.  His Broadway debut was in the short-lived Vintage ‘60. Next he was seen opposite Ken Berry in The Billy Barnes People, the show where Lucille Ball claims to have ‘discovered’ Berry. In between Vintage and Barnes, Lucille Ball appeared on Broadway, too, in Wildcat.
Tumblr media
In 1964, he played opposite Carol Burnett in Fade Out - Fade In on Broadway.
He made his television debut in 1958 on “The Ed Sullivan Show,” which was filmed in New York City, and often featured Broadway performers.
Tumblr media
On March 22, 1965, he was made his first appearance opposite Lucille Ball in “Lucy and the Beauty Doctor” (TLS S3;E24). As usual in cases like this, Patterson was not really playing himself, just using his own name and aspects of his personality. He was never the host of a hidden camera show.
Tumblr media
He returned to “The Lucy Show” on November 1, 1965 for “Lucy Helps Danny Thomas” (TLS S4;E7). He played Marty King, director of Thomas’s television show.
Tumblr media
The hallways of the studio (presumably CBS) are decorated with photos of television stars like Jim Nabors of “Gomer Pyle USMC”, which was filmed on the Desilu backlot.
Tumblr media
Coincidentally, in January 1969, Dick Patterson appeared on an episode of the series “Win-A-Date” playing the host of a TV dating show.  In 1966, “The Lucy Show” did a cross-over episode featuring Jim Nabors in a cameo.
Tumblr media
In September 1966, Patterson and his wife Gita were seen on “Lucy Week” of the game show “Password” along with other “Lucy Show” performers.  Patterson tells host Allen Ludden that Lucy first saw him in a play in 1960.
Tumblr media
In addition to working with Lucy, he also was on the Desilu lot for a 1963 episode of “My Three Sons” with William Frawley, and a 1964 episode of “The Dick Van Dyke Show” (above), reuniting him with the man he replaced in Bye Bye Birdie.  After filming “The Lucy Show” he starred in an episode of Desilu’s “Vacation Playhouse” titled “My Son the Doctor” (1966).
Tumblr media
Patterson appeared on “Here’s Lucy” as Mr. Morton of the Select-A-Spouse Dating Service in “Lucy, The Matchmaker” (HL S1;E12) in December 1968. Morton was Lucille Ball’s married name!
Tumblr media
In “Lucy’s Lucky Day” (HL S4;E15) in December 1971, Patterson was once again cast as a TV show host. This time he was Dick Dunkirk, host of the game show “The Milky Way To Riches.”
Tumblr media
For a change of pace, he played a football coach in “Lucy and Joe Namath” (HL S5;E5) airing on October 9, 1972.
Tumblr media
In his final appearance on the series, he played the director of a pickle commercial, Steve Thompson, wearing a goatee and using an accent.  “Lucy is Really in a Pickle” (HL S5;E15) aired on January 1, 1973.
Tumblr media
He attempted a return to Broadway in 1977, but the show only lasted one night. He tried once more in 1986 with the musical Smile, but that lasted only 48 performances.
From 1974 to 1976 he reunited with his Broadway co-star Carol Burnett on a dozen episodes of her television show, although none of the episodes also featured Lucille Ball. One of the shows, however, featured Ken Berry, another of his Broadway co-stars.
Tumblr media
He was in the film musicals Can’t Stop the Music (1980), Grease (1978), and Grease 2 (1982).  His final screen appearance was a December 1991 episode of “Columbo” playing an Emcee.
He died on September 20, 1999 at the age of 70.  He was married twice and had two children.

LOOK: FALL  TV FORECAST
September 17, 1957
Tumblr media
Look Magazine (volume 21, #19) featured the 1957 Fall TV Forecast on the cover, including a photograph of Lucille Ball, Desi Arnaz, and Richard Keith (aka Keith Thibodeaux) by Bob Vose.
Tumblr media
At the time of publication, “I Love Lucy” had ended its half-hour format and was about to launch an hour-long show airing every other month. It would become known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”  Fred, Ethel, and Little Ricky would be back for the new iteration, including the first one, “Lucy Takes A Cruise To Havana” (LDCH S1;E1) in November 1957.
Tumblr media
The trio previously appeared on the cover of Look in December 1956, just ten months earlier, also photographed by Bob Vose. Vose was a regular contributor to the magazine.
Tumblr media
The article (page 72) was titled Fall TV Forecast: New Labels...Old Ideas.
Tumblr media
On page 52, there is question and answer column with Norman Vincent Peale. It is well known that Lucille Ball was an inveterate disciple of Peale’s and strongly believed in his philosophy of living. Lucille and Gary Morton were even married by Dr. Peale (author of the best-seller The Power of Positive Thinking) in an intimate ceremony at his Marble Collegiate Church in November 1961.
Others On The Cover:
Tumblr media
Clint Walker and Venetia Stevenson (photo by Maurice Terrell) ~ Walker played the title character in “Cheyenne” a western then entering its third season on ABC. The series continued for seven seasons, ending in 1963. Stevenson did only one episode of the series, in October 1957. The series returned on September 24, 1957.
Tumblr media
In 1965 Clint Walker played Frank Winslow, Lucy’s hunky boyfriend, in “Lucy and the Sleeping Beauty” (TLS S4;E9) and “Lucy and Clint Walker” (TLS S4;E24).
Tumblr media
Alfred Hitchcock (photo by Maurice Terrell) ~ was also entering his third season on television, as host of the anthology series “Alfred Hitchcock Presents” (1955-62).
Tumblr media
In “Lucy Meets the Mustache” (LDCH S3;E3) Lucy wants to open a sealed letter Ricky has written to his Uncle Carlos in Cuba, so she tries a inserting a knitting needle under the flap, a method she says she saw in an Alfred Hitchcock movie. The scene is underscored with “Funeral March of a Marionette” by Charles Gounod, which served as the theme tune of "Alfred Hitchcock Presents”.
Tumblr media
Gisele MacKenzie (photo by Philip Harrington) ~ was a Canadian-American singer best known for her appearances on “Your Hit Parade.” She made her last appearance on the show ten days before this issue was published. She premiered “The Gisele MacKenzie Show” on September 28, 1957. The live show ran only one season on NBC.
Tumblr media
In November 1952, Gisele MacKenzie and Lucille Ball were both part of “Stars in the Eye” a televised celebration of the opening of CBS Television City in Hollywood. At the time, MacKenzie was a newcomer and Ball was representing “I Love Lucy.” A year before this magazine was published, Lucy, Desi, and MacKenzie were guests on the same “Toast of the Town” with Ed Sullivan.
Tumblr media
Perry Como (photo by Philip Harrington) - hosted a weekly hour-long variety show called “The Perry Como Show”, which premiered in September 1955. It was so popular that in the 1956-57 television season it reached ninth in the Nielsen ratings, the only show on NBC that season to land in the top ten. It was then entering its third season and would end in 1959.
Tumblr media
In a 1972 episode of “Here’s Lucy” starring pregnant Petula Clark, Lucy insists that that the British songbird be allowed to sit during her recording session, saying that Bing Crosby, Perry Como, and Frank Sinatra all sat down when singing!  Early in his career, Como was a spokesman for Chesterfields, Lucille Ball’s favorite brand of cigarettes. The only time they were seen on the same screen was at the 1987 Kennedy Center Honors induction of Como, although Ball was there to introduce fellow honoree Sammy Davis Jr.

FRED MACMURRAY
August 30, 1908
Tumblr media
Frederick Martin MacMurray was born in Kankakee, Illinois. His aunt was a vaudeville performer and actress. Before MacMurray was two years old, his family moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where his father was a music teacher. He later attended school in Quincy, Illinois before earning a full scholarship to Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. At Carroll, MacMurray played the saxophone in numerous local bands. He did not graduate from the college. Before signing with Paramount Pictures in 1934, he appeared on Broadway in Three's a Crowd (1930) and alongside Bob Hope in Roberta (1933).
Tumblr media
Fred MacMurray (1908-91) appeared in over 100 films in his career. He is perhaps best remembered for the film Double Indemnity (1944).
MacMurray’s name was first mentioned by Ethel in 1953 in “The Black Eye” (ILL S2;E20) when flowers arrive for Lucy mistakenly signed “Eternally yours, Fred.”
Tumblr media
LUCY: “Oh, now, Ethel, you certainly don’t think that these are from Fred Mertz, do you?” ETHEL: “Well, this card certainly wasn’t written by Fred MacMurray.”
Tumblr media
MacMurray’s 1954 film The Caine Mutiny was often mentioned on “Lucy” sitcoms, often in the context of the film’s source material, a book and a play. In “Lucy Writes A Novel” (ILL S3;E24), Lucy plans to name the sequel to her novel “Sugar Cane Mutiny,” a pun on Cuba’s main export and the title of the (then) recently released film. In “Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (HL S1;E11) Van Johnson orders security guards to escort Lucy Carter out of the studio. A bitter Lucy says that now she’s glad he got court martialed The Caine Mutiny.
Tumblr media
The first time that MacMurray appeared on screen with Lucille Ball was in “Lucy Hunts Uranium” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” set in the Nevada desert and Las Vegas. MacMurray played himself, and was briefly joined by his real-life second wife, June Haver. The storyline has MacMurray competing with Lucy for a claim on Uranium discovered in the desert.
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball later said that MacMurray was “fine enough” in this episode, but she really had to work with him on his comic timing, especially in the telephone booth scene. Ball and MacMurray clearly had different styles.
MY THREE SONS
Tumblr media
MacMurray is perhaps best remembered for playing Steve Douglas on “My Three Sons” (1960-72).
Tumblr media
MacMurray and the long-running show was on the cover of TV Guide nine times!
Tumblr media
From 1960 to 1965, MacMurray was joined by William Frawley as Bub O’Casey, the family’s live-in maternal grandfather.
Tumblr media
When Frawley left the show due to ill-health he was replaced by another Desilu alumni, William Demarest, as Uncle Charley. Demarest did three films with Lucille Ball. For Christmas 1959, Frawley and Demarest both appeared with Lucy and Desi in “The Desilu Revue”. At the time, Demarest was working on the Desilu lot appearing in NBC’s “Love and Marriage.”
Tumblr media
On “My Three Sons” two of  Steve Douglas’ “sons” had been seen on “The Lucy Show”: Don Grady (Robbie Douglas) had played Chris Carmichael’s friend Bill and Barry Livingston (Ernie Douglas) had played Mr. Mooney’s son Arnold. Ted Eccles, who assumed the role of Arnold Mooney when Barry Livingston was busy on “My Three Sons,” also did an episode. Ralph Hart (who played Viv Bagley’s son Sherman), Jimmy Garrett (Jerry Carmichael) and Candy Moore (Lucy Carmichael’s daughter Chris) were also on the show.
Other “Lucy” performers on “My Three Sons” include: Mary Wickes, Doris Singleton, Shirley Mitchell, Barbara Pepper, Verna Felton, Kathleen Freeman, Jerry Hausner, Reta Shaw, Elvia Allman, Eleanor Audley, Burt Mustin, Olan Soule, Alberto Morin, Herb Vigran, Bill Quinn, Barbara Perry, Nancy Kulp, George Neise, Maxine Semon, Flip Mark, Roy Roberts, Lou Krugman, Ted Eccles, Richard Reeves, Dorothy Konrad, Ed Begley, Gail Bonney, Jay North, Rolfe Sedan, Tyler McVey, J. Pat O’Malley, Paul Picerni, Sandra Gould, Richard Deacon, Mabel Albertson, Joan Blondell, Leon Belasco, Dayton Lummis, Lurene Tuttle, Robert Foulk, Dick Patterson, Jamie Farr, Larry J. Blake, Amzie Strickland, Barbara Morrison, Louis Nicoletti, Frank Gerstle, Willy Lally, Gil Perkins, Tommy Ferrell, Eve McVeagh, Remo Pisani, Dub Taylor, Frank J. Scannell, Ray Kellogg, Romo Vincent, Stafford Repp, Jay Novello, and Leoda Richards.
Tumblr media
The show’s Dialogue Coach / Director was Adele Sliff, whose name was used in the dialogue of “In Palm Springs” when Rock Hudson tells Lucy and Ethel a sad story.  Adele was also the “I Love Lucy” script clerk.
Tumblr media
In 1961, MacMurray took part in “This is Your Life: William Frawley” in tribute to his co-star. Naturally, Lucille Ball also took part in the show.
Tumblr media
MacMurray was cast as Frank Beardsley in Yours, Mine and Ours (1968) opposite Lucille Ball, but withdrew and the role went to Henry Fonda.
Tumblr media
In 1978, Lucy and MacMurray took to the dais to tribute Henry Fonda in “AFI Salutes Henry Fonda”.
Tumblr media
Two months later, Lucy and Fred were both seen in “Happy Birthday, Bob: A Salute to Bob Hope’s 75th Birthday” taped at the John F. Kennedy Center.
Tumblr media
In 1986, they were both back for “AFI Achievement Award: A Tribute to Billy Wilder”. Curiously, neither MacMurray nor Ball had ever worked with Wilder.
Tumblr media
The last time Lucy and MacMurray shared the small screen (with June Haver) was at the “All-Star Party for Clint Eastwood” in 1986.
He married Lillian Lamont on June 20, 1936, and the couple adopted two children.
Tumblr media
After Lamont died of cancer on June 22, 1953, he married actress June Haver the following year. The couple adopted two more children in 1956. MacMurray and Haver's marriage lasted 37 years, until Fred's death at age 83 in 1991.

RAY KELLOGG
November 12, 1919
Tumblr media
Ray Kellogg was born on November 12, 1919. He was a big, burly character actor who appeared in more than 130 TV and film projects from 1942 to 1972.
Tumblr media
From 1942 to 1954 he appeared uncredited in seven feature films. He made his television debut in a November 1954 episode of “I Love Lucy” titled “Ricky’s Screen Test” (ILL S4;E7). Kellogg plays the Assistant Director who startles Lucy with his loud “Quiet on the set!”.
Tumblr media
Once in Hollywood, Kellogg appeared in “Bullfight Dance” (ILL S4;E22) as the props man in charge of Lucy’s bull costume.
Tumblr media
His third and final series appearance was as a uniformed TWA airline crew member in “Return Home From Europe” (ILL S5;E26) in 1956.  He is called to the cabin when Lucy’s baby is revealed to be a cheese, causing mid-air chaos!
Tumblr media
In October 1957, Kellogg did an episode of the Desilu series “December Bride”. Desi Arnaz made an appearance as himself on his show in 1956.
Tumblr media
In March 1960, Kellogg played a policeman on Desilu’s “The Untouchables”. This was just one of his many appearances as a uniformed law enforcement official. The episode also featured “Lucy” cast members Eleanor Audley, Hazel Pierce, and George DeNormand. In March 1966 “The Lucy Show” did a satire on “The Untouchables” that featured its stars Robert Stack, Bruce Gordon, Steve London, and Walter Winchell.
Tumblr media
Between 1958 and 1962, Kellogg made four appearances on Desilu’s “The Real McCoys” - two of which wearing blue.
Tumblr media
From 1954 to 1963, Kellogg made three appearances on “Make Room for Daddy” aka “The Danny Thomas Show” - all as policemen.  His 1954 appearance also featured Doris Singleton (Caroline Appleby). In 1958, the series switched from ABC to CBS and did reciprocal crossover episodes with “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
Tumblr media
In 1963 he did an episode of Desilu’s short-lives series “Glynis” that also featured Saverio LoMedico, who played the Roman Bellboy in “Lucy’s Italian Movie” (ILL S5;E23).
Tumblr media
In early 1964, Kellogg was on the Desilu backlot to film an episode of “The Andy Griffith Show” in which he played a truck driver.
Tumblr media
That same year, Kellogg reteamed with Lucille Ball on “The Lucy Show”. First, he played a country club doorman, who announces Mrs. Carmichael - on roller skates - in “Lucy the Good Skate” (TLS S3;E1).
Tumblr media
In “Lucy the Coin Collector” (TLS S3;E13) Kellogg is back in blue to console Lucy and Viv when a valuable collectible coin slips down the gutter in the street.
Tumblr media
Three months later he was yet another doorman in “Lucy Meets Danny Kaye” (TLS S3;E15). Mrs. Carmichael buys Henderson the doorman’s uniform to sneak into the hotel to see Kaye.
Tumblr media
Officer Kellogg is back when Lucy is put to test in “Lucy and Art Linkletter” (TLS S4;E16) in 1966. Is he a real cop, or an actor hired by Linkletter?
Tumblr media
In the middle of his “Lucy Show” run of appearances, Kellogg appeared in Bob Hope’s special "15 of My Leading Ladies" or "Richard Burton Eat Your Heart Out".  He played the director of a film starring Dina Merrill and had no scenes with Lucille Ball.
Tumblr media
Kellogg was back on the beat in “Lucy and the Ring-a-Ding Ring” (TLS S5;E5) in 1966.
Tumblr media
He gets a motorcycle when “Viv Visits Lucy” (TLS S5;E5) in January 1967. He is joined by John J. Fox as a Sunset Strip patrolman.
Tumblr media
In his final series appearance in January 1968, Kellogg (along with Fox) must apprehend “Lucy and the Stolen Stole” (TLS S6;E19), although she’s innocent of all charges.
Tumblr media
In February 1965, he took a break from playing policemen on “My Three Sons”, filmed on the Desilu lot.
Tumblr media
Between 1962 and 1965, Kellogg did six appearances on “The Dick Van Dyke Show” also filmed at Desilu. In one, he traded his police blues for army khakis. In one, of course, he played a cop.
Tumblr media
From 1964 to 1969, he did four episodes of “Gomer Pyle U.S.M.C.” as various characters (but no policemen). The series was originally filmed at Desilu and did a quick crossover with “The Lucy Show” in “Lucy Gets Caught Up In The Draft” (TLS S5;E9) in 1966.
Tumblr media
He was back with Lucille Ball on “Here’s Lucy” as a party guest in “Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (HL S1;E11) in December 1968 with guest star Van Johnson.
Tumblr media
His final appearance with Lucille Ball three months later was (again) as a motorcycle cop in “Lucy Helps Craig Get a Driver’s License” (HL S1;E24) in 1969, although a month earlier he was seen on a “Jack Benny” special that also featured Lucille Ball but the two did not share any screen time.
Tumblr media
Kellogg’s final role was as a bartender (not a policeman) on three episodes of “Maude” in 1972.
Ray Kellogg died on September 26, 1981 in Olympia, Washington, at age 61.
[Note: Due to confusion with visual effects artist Ray Kellogg (1905-76), finding specific personal information about Kellogg through online sources is unreliable.]

TRYING TO CASH THE PRIZE CHECK
December 9, 1950
Tumblr media
“Trying To Cash The Prize Check” (aka “The ‘Everybody Wins’ Prize Check”) is episode #109 of the radio series MY FAVORITE HUSBAND broadcast on December 9, 1950.
Synopsis ~ Liz goes on the radio quiz show and wins a check for $500, but she only gets to keep it if she can cash it within 25 minutes, and the banks are all closed!
This was the 15th episode of the third season of MY FAVORITE HUSBAND. There were 43 new episodes, with the season ending on June 25, 1950.
Tumblr media
“My Favorite Husband” was based on the novels Mr. and Mrs. Cugat, the Record of a Happy Marriage (1940) and Outside Eden (1945) by Isabel Scott Rorick, which had previously been adapted into the film Are Husbands Necessary? (1942). “My Favorite Husband” was first broadcast as a one-time special on July 5, 1948. Lucille Ball and Lee Bowman played the characters of Liz and George Cugat, and a positive response to this broadcast convinced CBS to launch “My Favorite Husband” as a series. Bowman was not available Richard Denning was cast as George. On January 7, 1949, confusion with bandleader Xavier Cugat prompted a name change to Cooper. On this same episode Jell-O became its sponsor. A total of 124 episodes of the program aired from July 23, 1948 through March 31, 1951. After about ten episodes had been written, writers Fox and Davenport departed and three new writers took over – Bob Carroll, Jr., Madelyn Pugh, and head writer/producer Jess Oppenheimer. In March 1949 Gale Gordon took over the existing role of George’s boss, Rudolph Atterbury, and Bea Benaderet was added as his wife, Iris. CBS brought “My Favorite Husband” to television in 1953, starring Joan Caulfield and Barry Nelson as Liz and George Cooper. The television version ran two-and-a-half seasons, from September 1953 through December 1955, running concurrently with “I Love Lucy.” It was produced live at CBS Television City for most of its run, until switching to film for a truncated third season filmed (ironically) at Desilu and recasting Liz Cooper with Vanessa Brown.
MAIN CAST
Tumblr media
Lucille Ball (Liz Cooper) was born on August 6, 1911 in Jamestown, New York. She began her screen career in 1933 and was known in Hollywood as ‘Queen of the B’s’ due to her many appearances in ‘B’ movies. With Richard Denning, she starred in a radio program titled “My Favorite Husband” which eventually led to the creation of “I Love Lucy,” a television situation comedy in which she co-starred with her real-life husband, Latin bandleader Desi Arnaz. The program was phenomenally successful, allowing the couple to purchase what was once RKO Studios, re-naming it Desilu. When the show ended in 1960 (in an hour-long format known as “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour”) so did Lucy and Desi’s marriage. In 1962, hoping to keep Desilu financially solvent, Lucy returned to the sitcom format with “The Lucy Show,” which lasted six seasons. She followed that with a similar sitcom “Here’s Lucy” co-starring with her real-life children, Lucie and Desi Jr., as well as Gale Gordon, who had joined the cast of “The Lucy Show” during season two. Before her death in 1989, Lucy made one more attempt at a sitcom with “Life With Lucy,” also with Gordon.
Richard Denning (George Cooper) was born Louis Albert Heindrich Denninger Jr., in Poughkeepsie, New York. When he was 18 months old, his family moved to Los Angeles. Plans called for him to take over his father’s garment manufacturing business, but he developed an interest in acting. Denning enlisted in the US Navy during World War II. He is best known for his  roles in various science fiction and horror films of the 1950s. Although he teamed with Lucille Ball on radio in “My Favorite Husband,” the two never acted together on screen. While “I Love Lucy” was on the air, he was seen on another CBS TV series, “Mr. & Mrs. North.” From 1968 to 1980 he played the Governor on “Hawaii 5-0″, his final role. He died in 1998 at age 84.
Gale Gordon (Rudolph Atterbury) had worked with Lucille Ball on “The Wonder Show” on radio in 1938. One of the front-runners to play Fred Mertz on “I Love Lucy,” he eventually played Alvin Littlefield, owner of the Tropicana, during two episodes in 1952. After playing a Judge in an episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” in 1958, he would re-team with Lucy for all of her subsequent series’: as Theodore J. Mooney in ”The Lucy Show”; as Harrison Otis Carter in “Here’s Lucy”; and as Curtis McGibbon on “Life with Lucy.” Gordon died in 1995 at the age of 89.
Bea Benadaret (Iris Atterbury) was considered the front-runner to be cast as Ethel Mertz but when “I Love Lucy” was ready to start production she was already playing a similar role on TV’s “The George Burns and Gracie Allen Show” so Vivian Vance was cast instead. On “I Love Lucy” she was cast as Lucy Ricardo’s spinster neighbor, Miss Lewis, in “Lucy Plays Cupid” (ILL S1;E15) in early 1952. Later, she was a success in her own show, “Petticoat Junction” as Shady Rest Hotel proprietress Kate Bradley. She starred in the series until her death in 1968.
Bob LeMond (Announcer) also served as the announcer for the pilot episode of “I Love Lucy”. When the long-lost pilot was finally discovered in 1990, a few moments of the opening narration were damaged and lost, so LeMond – fifty years later – recreated the narration for the CBS special and subsequent DVD release.
Ruth Perrott (Katie, the Maid) does not appear in this episode.
GUEST CAST
Tumblr media
Frank Nelson (’Happy’ Hal Brubaker) was born on May 6, 1911 (three months before Lucille Ball) in Colorado Springs, Colorado. He started working as a radio announcer at the age of 15. He later appeared on such popular radio shows as “The Great Gildersleeve,” “Burns and Allen,” and “Fibber McGee & Molly”.  Aside from Lucille Ball, Nelson is perhaps most associated with Jack Benny and was a fifteen-year regular on his radio and television programs. His trademark was playing clerks and other working stiffs, suddenly turning to Benny with a drawn out “Yeeeeeeeeees?” Nelson appeared in 11 episodes of “I Love Lucy”, including three as quiz master Freddy Fillmore, and two as Ralph Ramsey, plus appearance on “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” - making him the only actor to play two different recurring roles on “I Love Lucy.” Nelson returned to the role of the frazzled Train Conductor for an episode of “The Lucy Show” in 1963. This marked his final appearance on a Lucille Ball sitcom.
Nelson adds one more quizmaster to his list of credits with ‘Happy’ Hal Brubaker. He joins Smiley Stembottom and Freddy Fillmore.
Tumblr media
Bobby Jellison (Mr. Uh-Uh-Uh) will play the recurring character of Bobby the bellboy throughout the Hollywood episodes of “I Love Lucy”.  Viewers may also remember him as the milkman in “The Gossip” (S1;E24). He makes one more appearance as another luggage jockey in “Lucy Hunts Uranium,” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy–Desi Comedy Hour”.
Tumblr media
Jerry Hausner (Loan Store Clerk) was best known as Ricky Ricardo’s agent in “I Love Lucy” and as the voice of Waldo in “Mr. Magoo” and several characters such as Hemlock Holmes, The Mole, Broodles and Itchy in “The Dick Tracy Show.”  On Broadway, Hausner had the role of Sammy Schmaltz in Queer People (1934). On radio, he was a regular on such shows as “Blondie”, “The Jim Backus Show”, “The Judy Canova Show”, “Too Many Cooks”, and “Young Love”. Hausner died of heart failure on April 1, 1993. He was 83 years old.
Tumblr media
Wally Maher (Mr. Trimble, the Grocer) was born on August 4, 1908 in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was known for Mystery Street (1950), The Reformer and the Redhead (1950) and Hollywood Hotel (1937). He was heard with Lucille Ball in the Lux Radio Theatre version of “The Dark Corner” (1947), taking the role originated on film by William Bendix. He died on December 27, 1951.
Tumblr media
Sandra Gould (Woman in Audience) is probably best remembered as the second actor to play Gladys Kravitz on “Bewitched” (1966-71). On “I Love Lucy,” she played Nancy Johnson in “Oil Wells” (ILL S3;E18) and makes a brief appearance as an alarmed strap-hanger in “Lucy and the Loving Cup” (ILL S6;E12). In 1962 she appeared in the fourth episode of “The Lucy Show” as a bank secretary.
EPISODE
ANNOUNCER: “As we look in on the Coopers this morning, they’re at breakfast, and from the way Liz is looking at George, she’s either madly in love or has some ulterior motive in mind.”
Liz wants to buy a new dress to wear to the club dance on Saturday, which costs $89.50. George won’t allow it but Liz is determined to get it by hook or by crook.
Later the doorbell rings and it is Iris Atterbury. A downbeat Liz tells Iris about the dress she wants. Iris is going to a radio broadcast and wants Liz to go along to cheer herself up - and possibly win enough money to buy the new dress.
Tumblr media
The show is called “Everybody Wins” hosted by ‘Happy’ Hal Brubaker (Frank Nelson), a local radio game show. It is sponsored by Grandma Grimes Cold Cream.  The first contestant is the woman with the reddest hair - Liz Cooper! Another woman in the audience (Sandra Gould) objects!
WOMAN: “Are you kiddin’ sister? At home, I’m a redhead. Next to you, I’m a brunette!”
Liz wins a $500 check just for stating her name. The catch is, Liz must cash the check in 25 minutes without telling anyone it is a stunt for a radio show.  She’s assigned a man (Bobby Jellison) to watch her to be sure. Liz confesses that her husband is a banker. Brubaker reminds her that the show went on the air at 3pm when the banks close.
Tumblr media
Liz and Iris tear out of the studio toward the bank. They bang on the door to get the guard’s attention. Liz sees George but can’t tell him why she needs to get in. Their watchdog chaperone intervenes with a warning “Uh uh uh!” every time Liz starts to explain. Mr. Atterbury comes by and Iris asks him to cash the check, but Mr. Atterbury says to come back in the morning.  Liz pleads with him, but Mr. Atterbury cites state law. Liz stages a fake stick-up to get the cash. Mr. Atterbury points out that she hasn’t got a gun.
With twelve minutes left, Liz and Iris start out to look for somewhere else to cash the check.
End of Part One
Tumblr media
Bob LeMond does a Jell-O commercial that gives a recipe for a quick dessert during the holidays.
ANNOUNCER: “As we look in on the Coopers again, Liz and Iris have just left the bank to try to find another place to cash the $500 check from ‘Everybody Wins’ which Liz can keep if she can cash it in the next 15 minutes. George and Mr. Atterbury have prepared to return to their work.”
At the bank, Mr. Atterbury and George are alone. He turns on the radio.
MR. ATTERBURY: “I wouldn’t want anyone to know that we go over the books with ‘Arthur Godfrey’”!
Tumblr media
Arthur Godfrey (1903-83) was a tremendously popular host and entertainer. His CBS morning radio show “Arthur Godfrey Time” aired five times a week. He also had an evening program titled “Arthur Godfrey’s Talent Scouts” which soon transitioned to television. It was the lead-in to “I Love Lucy” in 1951 and promoted Godfrey did on-air promotion for “Lucy.”  Many years later Godfrey guest-starred as himself on “The Lucy Show.”  Although tremendously popular whenever he aired, Godfrey was noticeably absent from afternoons, so it is unlikely that George and Mr. Atterbury tune in to his program at 3pm.
When the radio comes on, however, it is tuned to “Everybody Wins”, not Arthur Godfrey.
HAPPY HAL BRUBAKER (over radio): “Thank you, Mrs. Malone for being such a good sport and jumping off the high ladder with an umbrella. You missed the mattress so you don’t get a prize. Thanks anyway, and we hope that little old leg of yours mends soon!”
Tumblr media
This verbal gag is brought vividly to life on television with the appearance of a heavily bandaged former winner Mrs. Peterson (Hazel Pierce) who went over Niagara Falls in a barrel!
George and Mr. Atterbury tune in just in time to hear Hal Brubaker report that Liz Cooper has not yet returned from cashing her check!  They realize what all her secrecy was about and, after a brief disagreement, they fill their pockets with cash and race off to find her!
Tumblr media
Liz and Iris see a loan shop sign “Do You Need Money? Hmmm?” in neon. The clerk (Jerry Hausner) tells them he will deduct the interest and the carrying charges giving her $14.32 with $50 weekly re-payments for 36 weeks! To get $500 they need to borrow $13,000!
They run out of the shop with only six minutes left. George and Mr. Atterbury spot them, but rather than explain and waste time, the girls duck into a taxi to go to Trimble’s Grocery, where Liz is sure Mr. Trimble will give her the cash.
Elderly grocer Mr. Trimble (Wally Maher) is in a chatty mood, wanting to talk about a mushy eggplant he sold her. He agrees to cash the check but is slow counting out the money from the cash drawer, making Liz a nervous wreck. He finally finishes, only to misread the check and count out $5.00 instead of five hundred!
Tumblr media
Liz and Iris give up and go back to the radio station. Meanwhile, George and Mr. Atterbury give up chasing Liz and Iris and decide to go to the radio station.  Liz arrives with a minute and a half to go. Defeated, she tears up the check just as the boys come racing in with the $500 cash.  With 45 seconds to go they scramble to reassemble the check!  Liz finds the final piece just as time expires.
Brubaker reveals that he tricked her. The “Uh Uh Uh” man had the money all the time and would have cashed the check had Liz just asked. George is outraged and punches Brubaker in his ‘Happy’ face!  As a consolation, George agrees to give Liz the money anyway - plus $89.50 for the new dress.
LIZ: “Oh, George!  You really are my favorite husband!”
Tumblr media
In the final live Jell-O commercial, Lucille Ball takes on the character of a famous lady novelist and Bob LeMond is her interviewer. Lucy adopts a nasal voice as Elizabeth Dopplefinger Hopenshmice. The voice is similar to the one she will do as Isabella Clump in “The Million Dollar Idea” (ILL S3;E13). Elizabeth says she first imagines a book cover and then writes a story around it.  Bob LeMond says he would like to see a bowl of Jell-O on the cover of a book, but Elizabeth prefers a more romantic cover and kisses him. LeMond still wants Jell-O on the cover.
Tumblr media
Bob LeMond reads the credits. There is a recorded message from Instant Sanka.
