How Does E-Waste Affect Us?

With the ever-growing presence of technology in everyday life, society consumes more and more electronic devices.  For instance, in 2014, 1.9 billion mobiles phones were shipped all around the world. Of course, the importance accorded to electronic devices in the modern society has impacts on the planet. Furthermore, I am going to explain what exactly electronic waste is and how it affects the environment.

Heavy metals

A cellphone can contain up to 1000 components of various materials, some of them toxic. Heavy metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and beryllium can be found in electronic devices and are known to have damaging repercussions on the planet as well as the people. Mainly, the exposition and inhalation of these metals can cause kidney damage, lung damage, eczema, oral lichen, acute psychosis, cancer and, in extreme cases, death. Emissions of these metals have been around for decades, but e-waste increases even more this phenomenon that challenges humans’ health.

 Chemicals

Hazardous chemicals are also present in electronic devices. The most prominent are brominated flame retardants. They do not break down easily and build up in the environment. They have been located in various locations, often far away from their initial location and have been detected in plants and wildlife throughout the food chain, in human tissues, blood serum and breast milk.

 Third-world countries

Another issue that is not often talked about is that the people most affected by e-waste are the ones who live in third-world countries. Indeed, instead of finding solutions to recycle most of the electronic waste, America ships them to these countries. For instance, it is estimated that 70% of e-waste in India comes from exterior countries. Not only does the environmental situation of these countries languishes because of it, but the people living there are the most exposed and likely to be affected by the consequences named earlier.

 Need for change

E-waste is an expanding issue that affects more and more the planet, especially if we do not act upon the worries we should have. The best way to begin a movement to solve this world-wide problem is to bring awareness to it and to do simple actions such as recycling our used devices.
