Santo Domingo de la Calzada, Spain (No. 4)

The hermitage stands on the south side of the Plaza del Santo and tradition says that it was built on the old and humble oratory made by Domingo García 'El Santo'. In 1487 the stonemasons Sancho and Pero Gil built two walls and changed the position of the façade. In 1527 the Master Hernando made the doors and the stonemason Yñigo the roofs. Thus it was raised until it was finished with the current appearance in 1710.

The hermitage had several destinations since it served as the first dwelling of the Cistercian Nuns until finishing their monastery and was the headquarters of the Brotherhood of the Saint.

The Virgen de la Plaza is the patron saint of the city, whose feast is celebrated on August 5 and her image, with that of the founder, go out in procession on September 18, Thanksgiving Day in the town.
