Grounding Problems
Colonel Bayshore called me into his office. “Max we have a problem at the new Alternate Support Headquarters (ASH) in England and need you on a plane.”  “What’s the problem?”  “A grounding issue.” “Ummm, I don’t know anything about grounding.”  “None of us do. Here is the manual.” In 1988 and Cath and I were stationed in Germany with the Information Systems Engineering Command (ISEC).  I was a…

After the end of the Second World War, the US Army took over and expanded numerous military bases in Germany. Prof. David Vine of the American University in Washington D.C. speaks of 119 (!) military locations; as of 2021. Germany, specifically Stuttgart-Vaihingen, is home to the strategic headquarters of the United States’ European Command (EUCOM) and that of NATO’s supreme allied commander: Supreme Allied Commander Europe. They command all US forces “in 51 predominantly European countries”. Also in Germany, is AFRICOM, the supreme command over US military operations on the African continent with the exception of Egypt and Djibouti, which was established in 2007. No African state made itself available as a location for this. The majority of the population is probably not aware of the enormous strategic military presence of the USA in Germany and it probably has little to do with friendly relations (as is always claimed in the media). Lord Ismay, the first Secretary General of NATO, once said that the aim of the Western defense alliance was “to keep the Americans in, the Russians out and the Germans down”. This sums up Washington’s intention to maintain a permanent presence in a subservient Germany and thus at the same time to adopt a hostile position towards Russia. Worldwide, the US maintains over 750 (!!!) military bases and has more than 173,000 soldiers in 159 countries. By comparison, Russia and China each have less than 20 foreign bases. Up to 2019 this cost the American and German taxpayer 51.5 billion US dollars per year just for the construction and maintenance of the infrastructure used abroad and another 150 billion US dollars per year for the bases including personnel. According to the United Nations, only one fifth of this sum – i.e. 30 billion US dollars – would be enough to end world hunger.... Historical review Since the end of World War II, our thinking in Germany has been shaped to accept the USA as a necessary organizing power that protects the world from the threat of Russia and, since 9/11, from the danger of terrorism. Germany is becoming more and more actively involved in the military actions of NATO, the Pentagon’s strategic arm in Europe. More Information in English -- https://www.kla.tv/25138 My Words: What hardly anyone knows: After World War II, Russia signed a peace treaty with Germany. As far as I know, America never signed a peace treaty with Germany. Our country was doing well before the Ukraine war, until our politicians imposed sanctions on Russia and sold our country to foreign countries. It's a shame that my country is being so humiliated by German politicians (who have sold their honor and soul).

abcnews go com/International/several-us-military-bases-europe-heightened-state-alert/story?id=111560635
Several U.S. military bases across Europe are now operating under a heightened state of alert, ABC News has confirmed.
The alert level of Force Protection Condition (FPCON) "Charlie" was put in place over the weekend, according to two U.S. officials.
According to the U.S. Army, Charlie is the second highest state of alert that "applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely."
In a statement provided to reporters, U.S. European Command said it's "constantly assessing a variety of factors" on security and safety.
"For operational security reasons, we will not get into specific measures, but we remain vigilant," EUCOM wrote, in part.
The development was first reported by Stars and Stripes, an independent military publication.

USAF F-16 fighters train in Bosnia on alert against "separatist activity"
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 01/11/2024 - 16:00 in Military, War Zones
Two U.S. Air Force F-16 Fighting Falcons conducted bilateral air-to-ground training with joint terminal attack controllers (JTACs) from the U.S. Special Operations Command in Europe and the Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed Forces JTACs near Tuzla, Bosnia and Herzegovina, on January 8, 2024.
This bilateral formation is an example of advanced cooperation between the military that contributes to peace and security in the Western Balkans and throughout Europe. It is also a show of force aimed at deterring the "separatist activity" of Bosnian Serbs that is in disagreement with the U.S.-mediated peace agreements, the U.S. government said.
Tumblr media
The exercise aimed to support America's commitment to Bosnia's territorial integrity, amid growing tensions inflamed by Bosnian Serb nationalist leader Milorad Dodik, whom Russia supports.
January 9 is celebrated as Republika Srpska Day by Bosnian Serbs and marks the anniversary of the declaration of independence that started the conflict in Bosnia in 1992, which killed more than 100,000 people and led to ethnic cleansing and the massacre of civilians.
Tumblr media
“Joint military events like this are a demonstration of the U.S.' lasting partnership with the Bosnia and Herzegovina Armed Forces,” said U.S. Air Force Lieutenant General Steven L. Basham, deputy commander of the U.S. European Command.
"American support for the Armed Forces of Bosnia and Herzegovina is inflexible, forged over years of close cooperation. For twenty years, the Armed Forces of our two countries maintained a remarkable and robust military relationship between the military," added Basham. "The United States continues to provide assistance that will help its armed forces modernize and become a contributor to security, both regionally and globally.”
The training was part of the routine efforts of U.S. forces to exchange tactics, techniques and procedures with the forces of partner countries.
Tumblr media
The mission of the F-16 fighters assigned to the 31ª Fighter Wing of Aviano Air Base, Italy, was supported by a KC-135 Stratotanker from the 100ª Air Refueling Wing, from the RAF Base in Mildenhall, United Kingdom, which provided air refueling for the F-16s and contributed to fulfilling all training objectives.
The U.S. Department of Defense and the Bosnian and Herzegovina Armed Forces share a common goal of contributing to continued stability in the region and are natural partners in their global commitment to global security.
Tumblr media
In the 1990s, NATO intervened with military force, first through the beginning of Operation Deny Flight, which aimed to impose a United Nations no-fly zone during the conflict in the Balkans, and later Operation Deliberate Force, an air campaign against the Bosnian Serbian Army. In 1995, the US mediated the Dayton Agreements, agreed at Wright-Patterson Air Base, Ohio, with Republika Srpska, of a Serbian majority, and the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, of Bosnian and Croatian majority, agreeing to peace as a single state.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg warned in November that the alliance was “concerned about secessionist and divisionist rhetoric, as well as evil foreign interference, including Russia”.
After the celebration of Republika Srpska Day on January 9, the U.S. Embassy in Sarajevo condemned the actions.

“The United States has acted to address anti-Dayton actions like this in the past and will not hesitate to do so again in the future,” the U.S. Embassy said in a statement on January 9.
EUCOM said that the Air Force exercise held on January 8 aimed to strengthen peace in the Balkans.

U.S. military bases throughout Europe have been put on heightened alert status due to a potential terrorist attack.
There is credible intel pointing to an attack against U.S. bases over the next week or so.
The U.S. bases have raised the status of the alert level to, “Force Protection Charlie,” which means the Pentagon has received credible intelligence indicating some form of a terrorist attack is in the works.
The new alert applies to all U.S. military facilities and personnel in Europe, including facilities in Germany, Italy, Romanian and Bulgaria, per reporting from Stars and Stripes.
Stars and Stripes: The Charlie threat level “applies when an incident occurs or intelligence is received indicating some form of terrorist action or targeting against personnel or facilities is likely,” according to the Army’s website. Service members and others should anticipate significant delays at gate entry points because of increased security, according to the alerts. U.S. Army garrison in Stuttgart referred questions about the change in force protection to EUCOM.

Hi Parm! I’m looking at your OC’s intro post again, and I love all the details you included🖤 I was wondering what the patch on her jacket means? It’s super interesting! - @lostloveletters
HELLO BATTIE!!! very glad you asked this question, the patch is not super common knowledge so i'm excited to talk about it.
TL;DR she's a WAC, and the patch is ETOUSA (european theater of operations, united states army) specifically the patch iteration pre-1944.
historical ramblings about the ETOUSA under the cut :)
Tumblr media
The origins of the ETOUSA trace back to early 1941, before the US had "officially" entered the war. At this point the US portrays themselves as a neutral power because they want to keep their military operations a secret. To be prepared, they send a small group of military personnel to Britain to observe how the government was using American lend-lease supplies, should there ever be a time that the US will need to do the same on home soil. This small group of personnel were known as SPOBS, or the US Army Special Observer Group. The US joins the war in December 1941, and the SPOBS converts into the US Army Forces in the British Isles, or USAFBI. Their whole mission was to coordinate US forces in the British Isles in conjunction with the British, but the theater is changing so quickly that they end up throwing that plan out the window, and now the USFABI is sort of a sitting duck. (source, source) In June of 1942 the US Department of War decides to take the USFABI and turn it into ETOUSA (European Theater of Operations, United States Army). The brand-new department's job was to administrate, plan, and operate control over US forces in the European Theater. (source) Members of the ETOUSA included Generals (like General Patton!) to lower-ranking officials. Most of their domain was in the Communications Zone of the war rather than the front lines. With such a broad scope of administrative duties, a lot of manpower and womanpower was needed to manage it all-- enter our lovely WACs!! The Women's Army Corporation had a huge part in the ETOUSA as a whole, but many could also be found in their headquarters. (source, source, source) Without revealing too much about her story, my OC (who I don't have a set name for yet, oops) works with administrative duties related to the strategic planning of attacks. Now, the patch. While I was cooking her up this website was a saving grace for me, it's got such good info on WAC uniform guidelines/regulations-- this section features the information on the ETOUSA patch that I referenced.
Tumblr media
In her illustration she's sporting the first design of the ETOUSA patch from September 1943. You might notice how there's also a version of the ETOUSA patch with the service forces star atop it. Let me get into that. So now it's February 1944, the US had been making some pretty big strides across Europe (especially France), and now they want to focus on western Europe; so they make sure there's enough forces over there to justify a new command post. This new organization is called the SHAEF, or the Supreme Headquarters Allied Expeditionary Force, whose job was to administrate, plan, and operate control over US forces in the European Theater...which is currently the ETOUSA's job. But we're dealing with western Europe now, so they split the job down the middle; SHAEF takes the commanding part and the ETOUSA settles in France with the administrative and supplying part. Befitting of the new rebrand they modify their patch to the second iteration, the one that includes the service forces star, in February of 1944. The ETOUSA continues with these duties until shortly after Germany surrenders on May 7, 1945, and on July 1, 1945 it is redesignated as the USFET, the United States Forces European Theater. It retains that name until March 15, 1947, when it is redesignated as the EUCOM, Headquarters European Command. The EUCOM would be absorbed into the United States European Command (USEUCOM) on August 1, 1952. The end.
***Obviously I'm not a historian, so if somebody reads this and spots a place where I've gotten info wrong or misunderstood something important let me know and I'll add a footnote asap👍
Tumblr media
Thank you for reading!! 💗💗💗💗 My apologies because I know this is very long-winded but I really appreciate the interest Battie <3 You reminded me I need to get on it and write a formal intro post for her tbh... but both the ETOUSA and SHAEF are in this OC's future... i got stuff brewing. let me cook

What are you talking about, you idiot?
EUCOM is at Selfridge Air National Guard Base just outside Detroit.
That was to be my original duty station. I’ve already explained this on beingpeople.tumblr.com
One might suspect the interest coming from England here to Italy might have something to do with my OSINT geopolitical training briefing on Iran in the post-seizure period just prior to the assassination of Soleimani, with an intent to position itself as the most appropriate final destination for my political asylum, at which point they’ll just lock me in a room with a cat with a bowtie or something.

US military aircraft accident in the Mediterranean
The Pentagon insists that the mysterious "accident" happened during a routine training flight.
Fernando Valduga By Fernando Valduga 11/12/2023 - 12:11am Aeronautical Accidents, Military
An unspecified American military aircraft crashed on Friday (10/11) at night in the eastern Mediterranean, the U.S. European Command announced on Saturday. Washington recently sent two groups of aircraft carriers to the region as a deterrent in the midst of the ongoing Israeli war in the Gaza Strip.
The U.S. military aircraft was on a training flight on Friday night, when it “suffered an accident and crashed,” EUCOM said in a brief statement. The Pentagon did not provide any additional information about the type of aircraft, how many people were on board or whether the incident occurred by land or by sea.
“However, we can say with certainty that the out of the aircraft was purely related to training and there is no evidence of hostile activity,” EUCOM added. "Out of respect for the affected families, we will not disclose more information about the personnel involved at this time."
Tumblr media
In addition to several air bases in the region, the U.S. military also has the Boarded Attack Group (CSG) USS Gerald R. Ford operating in the eastern Mediterranean. The second attack group, led by USS Dwight D. Eisenhower has also been in the area recently, but has since passed through the Suez Canal to the Middle East to better "deter hostile actions against Israel or any efforts to extend this war after Hamas' attack on Israel."
In another accident last year, an F/A-18 Super Hornet embarked on the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman “exploded when he fell into the sea” due to “unexpected weather conditions” during a refueling mission in the Mediterranean. The jet sank hundreds of meters into the seabed, but was recovered a month later.
