BBNJ Treaty - The Race for Ratification.
The race for ratification of the BBNJ Treaty is the perfect example of how, by working together around the world, we can accelerate action to deliver the SDGs.
Side Event at the SDG Action Weekend organized by IUCN, Sierra Leone, European Union, Republic of Korea, Chile, Republic of Vanuatu, Birdlife International, Asociación Interamericana para la Defensa del Ambiente (AIDA), High Seas Alliance, EarthEcho, Greenpeace.
To maximize the 2023 SDG Summit's impact, the Secretary General is convening an SDG Action Weekend, which will generate opportunities for stakeholders, United Nations entities, and Member States to convene inside the United Nations Headquarters and set out specific commitments and contributions to drive SDG transformation between now and 2030.
The SDG Action Weekend will consist of the SDG Mobilization Day on Saturday, 16 September, and the SDG Acceleration Day on Sunday, 17 September at UNHQ in New York.
The SDG Action Weekend includes a select number of high-level side-events identified through an open call that concluded in August. They are jointly organized by coalitions of Member States, UN agencies and other international organizations, and global stakeholder networks.

Thought this was important to share. It's important to note that many of these species went extinct before this year--they were simply removed from the Endangered Species List in 2023. But because nothing can improve unless we believe that things can change, here are some things you can do to benefit local biodiversity:
Pollinators have been declining globally for the past several years--research local pollinator plants or native plants in general and join local restoration organizations (checking the websites of nearby open space parks/reserves and seeing if they have any volunteer days helpful)
Organize and implement your own native garden--it can be in a yard or a balcony if that is viable, or you can plant it at a local park/school in order to raise awareness. From experience, this takes a lot more work and logistics, but it's such a wonderful way to build community.
Participate in citizen science! Apps/websites like iNaturalist can help you document and contribute to scientific data, and local natural history/science museums sometimes offer citizen science programs as well.
If you live near the coast, research public comment opportunities for any MPAs (marine protected areas) and submit a comment! You can also email/call your local politicians about coastal and wetland restoration if you think they aren't making it a priority.
If the above seems daunting, join an organization, forum, or community! GenSea (a branch of EarthEcho International, a non-profit founded by the grandson of Jacques Cousteau) helped me a lot in my activism journey.
Spread the word. Through conversation, planting a garden, putting up posters. You can't do this alone, so try and get others engaged.
Finally, if you do something you love and intersect it with advocacy, that is when you achieve the most change. You don't have to call your reps or attend protests if that isn't you things. Tell stories; through writing, film, art, music, you name it. Do what you love--and learn to love the world around you because of it.

Xylem Watermark and EarthEcho International Lead the Clean Water Movement on World Water Monitoring Day, September 18th
In celebration of World Water Monitoring Day on September 18, Xylem Watermark is collaborating with environmental youth leadership organization EarthEcho International to host youth-led events nationwide that will help communities around the world be part of a clean water future for our planet.
As part of the EarthEcho Water Challenge, this year’s World Water Monitoring Day will include a special event in Renton, Washington, on September 18th, where local students will learn about water monitoring and how to improve water health for native salmon populations.  The Water Challenge, which runs annually from World Water Day through the end of the year, is comprised of three easy steps: Test water quality in communities; Share findings, data, stories and photos of quality testing; and Protect local water sources.
To kick-off events on World Monitoring Day, Xylem Watermark is partnering with EarthEcho’s Philippe Cousteau Jr., the Environmental Science Center, and the Nooksack Salmon Enhancement Association to host approximately eighty-five 4th grade students from Sartori Elementary School. Students will learn about the Cedar River, their local watersheds and how they can take action to protect these important waterways. Utilizing Xylem Watermark and EarthEcho’s water monitoring tools and resources, student attendees will test and record water quality and take part in hands-on activities focused on preserving salmon populations, stream health and environmental stewardship.  Volunteers from Xylem and industry partner Whitney Equipment Company, Inc will be present to lead educational activities with the participating students.
“The water we depend on every day is a precious resource that deserves our attention and protection,” said EarthEcho International Founder Philippe Cousteau, Jr. “We can’t afford to take our streams, rivers and watersheds for granted -- we can all play a role in conserving and improving the health of the natural water resources that feed our communities and the EarthEcho Water Challenge helps anyone be part of the solution.”
“Xylem Watermark is proud to continue Solving Water in communities through our partnership collaboration with EarthEcho. With the support of Xylem employees and stakeholders, educating the next generation, is core to our mission to provide and protect safe water resources for communities around the world and educate people about water issues,” says Jamie Saxe, Senior Director, Xylem Watermark Corporate Social Investment.  “Clean water and clean air makes for more fish and happier people,” says Jay Meena, President Whitney Equipment Company, Inc.
Learn more about the EarthEcho Water Challenge and how to Test, Share and Protect your waterways:
Test – It all begins by understanding the state of water quality in your community. Get started by purchasing a simple test kit at www.monitorwater.org;
Share – Participants can enter their data online through the EarthEcho Water Challenge  database and share their stories and photos on our website at www.monitorwater.org  or though social media using #MonitorWater; and
Protect – Armed with knowledge about local water resources, participants can use the information and tools available at www.monitorwater.org to protect local water resources every day.
The EarthEcho Water Challenge is made possible through the generous support of Xylem Watermark.

Celebrity Flora Launched
Celebrity Cruises has officially launched Celebrity Flora, a 100-guest, all-suites mega yacht designed specifically to sail the Galapagos Islands.
Celebrity Flora is also one of the most energy-efficient ships in hers class, with a 15 percent reduction of fuel consumption thanks to the introduction of an advanced propulsion system, hull configuration and specially designed diesel engines. Celebrity Flora's dynamic positioning system is a first in the Galapagos and will be used instead of anchors to protect the sea floor, with zero speed stabilizers for smooth sailing.
Celebrity Flora will have in-room water filtration stations and the ability to reuse air conditioning condensation to provide water to the shipboard laundry facilities. Reverse osmosis equipment will be used, so the ship can process sea water into fresh water to supply 100 percent of her needs. Plus, any materials that can be recycled, reused or donated will be as part of a strict waste management system.
Unique to Celebrity Flora are the first-ever glamping experience at sea, new dining venues, an open-air stargazing platform, expert-led ecological seminars and custom-designed Novurania yacht tenders.
"Every once in a while, a unique ship comes along in the industry and changes things, and Celebrity Flora is that ship," said Richard D. Fain, Chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd. "The Galapagos is a truly unique destination and deserved a ship with sustainability at its core. Today was an incredibly special day, with a very special Godmother. Yolanda Kakabadse has been a moral force for sustainability, in Ecuador and around the world, and we are honored to have her inspiration as Celebrity Flora sets sail."
Kakabadse is an environmental advocate and former World Wildlife Fund International President. "Being here in the beautiful Galapagos Islands on board Celebrity Flora has reminded me of one of my favorite quotes by Charles Darwin: 'In the long history of humankind those who learned to collaborate and improvise most effectively have prevailed,'" said Kakabadse. "Darwin was right; this is the time to collaborate with all sectors of society, and permanently innovate to seek new ways to address development challenges. Tourism can be at the center and Celebrity Flora is at the forefront."
In a unique nod to sustainability and the uniqueness of the vessel, the traditional bottle-breaking was triggered by a ceremonial ribbon-cutting that used a hand-crafted ribbon made from green banana core crafted by a collective of local female artisans known as Manos Magicas. In addition, the Ecuadorian national anthem was sung by two schoolchildren from Ecuador.
During the event, a partnership was revealed with EarthEcho International. Celebrity and the team at the non-profit will work together to introduce a comprehensive and customized youth strategy, designed to empower a new generation of environmental advocates both in the local communities of the Galapagos, as well as aboard Celebrity Flora and Celebrity Xpedition in the region. The program will include youth focused, environmental sustainability projects in the Galapagos Islands and activities for youth as part of Celebrity's onboard program.
By training, engaging and investing in youth and the local community, Celebrity and EarthEcho International will work to inspire champions for the protection of the Galapagos Islands. Over time, the goal is to explore opportunities to expand this partnership to other regions around the world. Philippe Cousteau Jr., Co-Founder, EarthEcho International, said: "The launch of Celebrity Flora presents an incredible opportunity for EarthEcho International and Celebrity to jointly develop a meaningful and impactful initiative that will engage and empower young environmental leaders both on board and in the communities of the Galapagos Islands."
With the launch of their newest ship, Celebrity had the opportunity to blend exploration and research by making Celebrity Flora the first vessel in the Galapagos to be equipped with cutting-edge oceanographic research equipment, known as Oceanscope. The program builds on a more than 20-year relationship with University of Miami's Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science that benefits from a cruise ship's consistent itinerary to create a perfect and cost-effective way for scientists to gather and measure ocean circulation dynamics.
The system will track and map the region while measuring sea-surface temperatures and gathering data critical to research prediction of El Niño and La Niña. All findings gathered by Celebrity Flora will become open source data – globally accessible to research.
Celebrity Flora will sail from Baltra year-round, making its first sailing on June 30, 2019.

His honour, W. Thomas (Tom) Molloy, O.C., S.O.M., Q.C., LL.B, LL.D. Lieutenant Governor of Saskatchewan hosted at Top of the Inn Ballroom, Sheraton Cavalier Hotel the Saskatoon Book Launch November 20 of Paul Hanley’s Biographical book, Man of the Trees. Richard St. Barbe Baker, the First Global Conservationist. By Paul Hanley Foreword by HRH The Prince of Wales Introduction by Jane Goodall.
His honour was the 12th Chancellor of the University of Saskatchewan in 2006 – 2007 and is now Chancellor Emeritus, as well he was on the board of the Meewasin Valley Foundation where he first heard of Richard St. Barbe Baker.
“I am very pleased to join with the University of Regina Press in launching this exciting new book about an extraordinary man.  I want to thank Paul Hanley for writing about Richard St. Barbe Baker…Although he was a  pioneering environmentalist who’s helped to save billions of trees, not many people have heard of him before.  This book is a welcome tribute to an internationally important figure who has very strong ties to our province…As you know Prince Charles has been a life long proponent of conservation and was such a big fan of St Barbe, he planted an avenue of Lime Trees at High Grove in his memory.” His honour, W. Thomas (Tom) Molloy
“Baker inspired many outstanding figures in the forest conservation and reforestation movement, including Felix Finkbeiner (Founder, Plant-for-the-Planet), Scott Poynton (Founder,The Forest Trust), Sunderlal Bahuguna (Founder, Chipko), Tony Rinaudo (Founder, Farmer Managed Natural Regeneration), Vance Martin (President, WILD Foundation), and Hugh Locke (President, Smallholder Farmers Alliance). Through the ripple effect of his indefatigable efforts to promote conservation and reforestation, billions of trees have been planted. He has been recognized as one of the outstanding figures of the conservation movement by environmental leaders such as Prince Charles, Jane Goodall, Wanjira Maathai (Green Belt Movement), Philippe Cousteau (EarthEcho International), Richard Leaky (International Centre for Research in Agroforestry), Sir Ghillian Prance (International Tree Foundation), Elizabeth Dowdeswell (Lieutenant Governor of Ontario, UN Under Secretary General, UNEP), and Peter Wohlleben (forester, author The Hidden Life of Trees). In 1969, The World Wildlife Fund appointed Baker its first Member of Honour.” Office of His honour, W. Thomas (Tom) Molloy
Just days before his death Richard St. Barbe Baker planted his last tree on the grounds of the University of Saskatchewan near the gravesite of his friend, The Right Honourable John George Diefenbaker PC CH QC who was the 13th Prime Minister of Canada.  At the time Richard St. Barbe Baker was working on his thirty-first book. This last tree can be seen from the window of the Top of the Inn at the Sheraton Cavalier when you look towards the University of Saskatchewan.  A memorial marker dedicated by Meewasin Valley Authority and the Saskatoon Baha’i community honours Baker’s last tree planting which took place on World Environment Day June 5, 1982 and the interpretive sign pays tribute to the legacy of tree planting initiated internationally by Richard St. Barbe Baker. Saskatoon City Council in 1979 celebrated the achievement and distinction of Baker naming the afforestation area preserved in perpetuity in Saskatoon [south of the CNR station] in his honour ~ the Richard St. Barbe Baker Afforestation Area.  Richard St. Barbe Baker’s papers, manuscripts, personal correspondence, forestry and conservation activities, photographs and fonds are preserved at the University of Saskatchewan Archives and Special Collections room. Baker Road in the Rural Municipality of Corman Park No. 344 is located near the two homestead lands of Richard St. Barbe Baker and his brother James Scott St. Barbe Baker.  St. Barbe Baker died on 9 June 1982 in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan where he is buried at Woodlawn Cemetery.*

“On asked if he would become a patron of the United Nations Year of the Tree, he replied, “I will accept only on condition that it becomes the first year of a Decade of the Tree. You’ve got to have ten years of urgent tree planning to become effective. Our felling has been ruthless over the past 50 years – as we have felled, so we must plant.” ~Richard St. Barbe Baker
