Even if it's technically better, lol). I grew up watching Mark "Big Mac" McGwire set world records (...controversy aside), walking past statues of Stan Musial, and listening to my parents wax eloquent about watching Ozzie Smith make incredible leaps and catches. I grew up on names like So Taguchi and Alan Wainwright and Albert Pujols and J. D. Drew and Edgar Renteria and Jim Edmonds. I grew up on the smell of popcorn and spilled bear and hot pretzels that were too expensive to actually buy, and the taste of White Castle milkshakes after the game, and the sounds of buskers playing saxophone while the crowds streamed out of the stadium. My name and favorite color are Red.

I am a Cardinals fan for life.

And the Cubs are The Biggest Rivals of the Cards Ever (just barely beating out the New York Mets. Pond scum. Derogatory. /hj) and one of my favorite memories is sitting in the broiling sun of a 105*F St. Louis afternoon and watching the Cards smash the Cubs just before St. Louis went on to win the 2011 World Series. (The Cubs won in 2016. GG I guess, but the Cards still VASTLY outweigh them in terms of wins.)

So yes. I have things to say about the Cubs. BUT.

Because I am a loyal Hermitcraft fan even over being a loyal Cards fan.... I will still say that Cubfan is a great person and I don't hold his taste in sports teams against him. Mostly. ;P

La alineación más apilada del Milenio se perdió los Playoffs

Con los MVP Cody Bellinger y Mookie Betts compartiendo una alineación con jugadores como Justin Turner, Max Muncy y Corey Seager, la alineación de los Dodgers de Los Ángeles está apilada. Son cinco jugadores que han demostrado ser capaces de publicar 5-6 temporadas de WAR. Incluso podemos incluir a A.J. Pollock en ese grupo (6.8 fWAR en 2015) si somos generosos, aunque abriría algunos ojos para ver a Pollack producir a ese nivel nuevamente (incluso para un lapso de 60 juegos). El límite máximo no se ha establecido para jóvenes como Will Smith y Gavin Lux, que podrían ingresar a ese territorio de élite con el mejor desarrollo futuro. No se puede negar que los Dodgers tienen una alineación cargada, pero ¿ha habido una alineación más cargada de MVP en la historia reciente? Albert Pujols (9,5 fWAR), Jim Edmonds (6,3 fWAR), Edgar Renteria (6,3 fWAR) y Scott Rolen (6,2 fWAR) organizaron temporadas "similares a MVP" en 2003. Pujols, de 23 años, habría tenido ha sido fanático de enganchar al MVP real de la Liga Nacional, pero esa fue la era de la supernova Barry Bonds, quien ganó su tercera de cuatro MVP consecutivos (10.2 fWAR) esa temporada. Los Cardenales terminaron quinto en las mayores en carreras anotadas con 876, segundo en total fWAR en ataque, cuarto en wRC +. J.D. Terminaron 19º en efectividad, 22º en FIP y 26º en cuadrangulares por nueve entradas. El bullpen fue un desastre particular, terminando la temporada en último lugar en las mayores con -1.8 fWAR. La rotación contaba con armas legítimas en Woody Williams, Matt Morris y, menos aún, Brett Tomko. Dan Haren hizo un buen debut en Grandes Ligas con 14 aperturas y 5.08 ERA / 4.57 FIP. Dicho esto, podrían haberlo hecho sin las 55 aperturas de Garrett Stephenson, en lo que sería su último golpe como lanzador de la MLB, Sterling Hitchcock en su penúltima temporada, Jeff Fassero, de 40 años, y Jason Simontacchi, quien venía de una temporada de novatos sorprendentemente decente a los 28 años. Guess MLB’s foreign-born hit leaders with this quiz

Over 40 countries around the world have players that have at least one hit in MLB. Can you guess who leads each country?

Adrian Beltre became the all-time foreign-born hits leader last week, passing Ichiro Suzuki with a double off of Kenta Maeda. It was a great moment for Beltre, but also made me wonder just who the hit leaders from various countries are. Over 40 countries (and a few unincorporated territories) have had players in MLB at some point who managed to get at least one hit in the bigs. Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to guess who all of the players leading those countries in hits are in this Sporcle Quiz.

We were going to just make another map like we did for the the hit leaders from each state last year, but I didn’t have a good explanation for why Ichiro Suzuki was going to be both the hit leader from Japan and the United States. Oh well, I’ll keep workshopping that one.

Your post-game notes

One player ever was born in Afghanistan — Jeff Bronkey — and they finished their career with zero MLB hits.

American Samoa is an unincorporated territory, not a country, but Tony Solaita’s 336 hits still merit a mention given he’s the lone player born there to make it to the majors.

One player, Ed Porray, was born at sea. This merman did not pick up any hits in MLB.

Australian Joe Quinn played from 1884 to 1901, amassing 1,804 hits, and not a single Australian player has come close to that total since. Dave Nilsson, whose career spanned most of the 90s, is second with just 789.

Dutch Ulrich is the hits leader from Austria as well as its most prolific pitcher, despite just three years in MLB.

This isn’t about hitting, but all three pitchers that have ever come from Brazil have reached the majors during the second-half of this decade.

Canada is a significant enough baseball country to have put 249 players in MLB, to regularly appear in the World Baseball Classic, to be the home country of Joey Votto, but they haven’t come close to producing anyone with 3,000 career hits yet. They do have one Hall of Fame pitcher (Fergie Jenkins), though, and he was nearly a 300-game winner!

Add China to the list of countries with just one player and no MLB hits. You would think that will change sometime in the near future, given China’s increased presence in the international baseball scene.

It is very weird to me that Edgar Renteria has more career hits than Larry Walker, but Colombia will take it.

Cuba’s Rafael Palmeiro is one of just five foreign-born players with at least 3,000 hits, and the lone Cuban to achieve the feat. Yasiel Puig needs to pick up the pace.

Andruw Jones is the lone player from Curacao with even 1,000 hits, but Andrelton Simmons (833) is going to change that in a hurry.

Elmer Valo has 1,420 hits, and 1,413 more than the next-most from the Czech Republic. That record has stood since 1961, and sure seems like it’ll be safe for some time more. (Valo is also on top for Slovakia — have fun going through Wikipedia to trace that after you finish this.)

Of course Adrian Beltre is tops among Dominican-born players: he’s at the top of the list of all foreign-born players. Before Beltre took over in the Dominican, it was Albert Pujols, and before that Hall of Famer Vladimir Guerrero. Beltre is also fifth all-time in homers among Dominican players, with 464.

San Francisco Giants manager Bruce Bochy is second among players born in France with 192 knocks.

Guam is also an unincorporated territory of the United States, and John Hattig is its hit leader with eight.

Just one of the 47 Irish-born players in MLB history was born in the 20th century. That’s Joe Cleary, who was born in 1918 a month after World War I ended, and then debuted in the majors a month before the end of World War II. Also, Patsy Donovan, Ireland’s hits leader, has more hits than Larry Walker.

Chili Davis played in the majors for 19 years. One of just four Jamaican-born players ever, he also has more career hits than Larry Walker.

You already knew Ichiro Suzuki has the most hits among Japanese players. He has the most hits of anyone!

It’s going to take Christian Villanueva a long time to catch up to childhood hero Vinny Castilla.

Didi Gregorius and Xander Bogaerts are teammates on the Netherlands’ World Baseball Classic squad, but that’s because of how territorial control plays into roster-building in that tournament. Gregorius is from the Netherlands itself, while Bogaerts is from Aruba, a constituent country of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. They‘re Yankees/Red Sox rivals at shortstop and Dutch empire rivals, basically.

Everth Cabrera briefly looked like he might wrest the crown from Marvin Benard for Nicaragua: between Cabrera’s fall and Cheslor Cuthbert being a zero offensively, Benard’s total might be safe for some time.

Players like John Anderson are always a little funny, since he’s one guy from over 100 years ago that you’ve probably never heard of, from a country you maybe weren’t aware ever produced a big-league player. But there he is, repping Norway with 1,843 Dead Ball hits.

Rod Carew is another member of the foreign-born 3,000 hit club, as the Panamanian logged 3,053 of them, earning a mention in a Beastie Boys track for his efforts.

Bobby Chouinard picked up a single hit in his career, making him the leader from the Philippines. He did more in the majors than that, as he was a reliever who appeared in 111 games. So even one hit is kind of a miracle: he had just nine plate appearances in his five years.

Dammit, Moe Drabowski, you couldn’t have managed just one more hit?

Frank Thompson has the only hits in Portugal’s history, and they gave him a career line of .130/.130/.174. Someone, anyone from Portugal: the bar is low, and it is yours for the taking.

Roberto Clemente finished his career with exactly 3,000 hits, and while Puerto Rico is also an unincorporated territory of the United States, it’s one with 264 players instead of one, and it gets a spot in the quiz, okay?

Craig Stansberry is the only hitter from Saudi Arabia; Alex Wilson the only pitcher. ”There sure are a lot of United States military bases in the world!” is the observation I wanted to make, but Stansberry’s dad worked for a “building materials” company and Wilson’s was a geologist, so I can’t. Still, there are like, so many, even if these dads won’t support me anecdotally.

Gift Ngoepe might have just 13 hits, but he’s 28 years old and still active. He’ll need to start hitting at Triple-A again to get another shot, though.

Shin-Soo Choo is one of 23 players from South Korea to make it to the majors, but he kind of stands alone on the hit list: his 1,423 is about 1,200 more than the next-highest.

To come back around on previous topics, the U.S. Virgin Islands were actually sold to the United States by the Kingdom of Denmark-Norway: Denmark and Norway have combined to produce four major leaguers, while the U.S. Virgin Islands alone have 14. This was poor financial decision-making, when you think of it like that.

There are fewer MLB players from the United Kingdom than credited actors from the United Kingdom in any season of the American-produced Game of Thrones. Makes you think.

Venezuela has produced the third-most MLB players of any country, behind only the United States and the Dominican Republic. Miguel Cabrera (2,676) will eventually take this top spot from Omar Vizquel, but he‘ll have to wait until 2019 to get going on that again thanks to a season-ending injury.

So today, we're going to try to guess the next Hall of Famer to wear each team's hat on his plaque. Some of these will be obvious, some of them will be stretches, and some of them will be absolute Hail Marys. But eventually, everyone will get another one. Here's our stabs at who it will be.

AMERICAN LEAGUE

EAST

Blue Jays: Vladimir Guerrero Jr., 3B Since we are assuming Halladay is getting in, it's safe to assume that Toronto's next Hall of Famer has not even played in a Major League game yet. It might not be Guerrero. But it's almost definitely someone you haven't seen yet.

Orioles: Mike Mussina, RHP Mussina has not said whether he'll wear a Yankees cap or an Orioles cap into the Hall; he could always pull a Tony La Russa and pick neither. But he was with Baltimore for two more seasons than he was with New York, and he was better there, too.

Rays: Evan Longoria, 3B To be honest: We don't think Longoria is going to get in, and we're not sure he should. But he's not that far off the JAWS average at the position, and he's got a few years left to compile some stats. (It would help if Scott Rolen could get in.) But find us a more likely Ray. The answer here is probably "person whose name we don't know yet."

Red Sox: Roger Clemens, RHP He and Barry Bonds are getting closer and closer -- both their vote totals to 75 percent, and them to their final year on the ballot in 2022. The guess here is that there's a surge in that last year and Clemens gets in. If it's not him, though, it'll obviously be David Ortiz.

Yankees: Derek Jeter, SS He hits the ballot next year. Will he surpass Rivera's vote total?

CENTRAL

Indians: Francisco Lindor There was a little bit of a temptation here to say "Kenny Lofton," with the idea that he was unappreciated in his time and could get Harold Baines'd in, but the Tribe member who looks most likely to be in the Hall someday still seems like Lindor.

Royals: Salvador Perez, C Here's a guy who will be watching Yadier Molina's eventual vote totals very closely. It would help if he wins another World Series someday.

Tigers: Miguel Cabrera, 1B It's him or Justin Verlander, and it kind of depends who retires first.

Twins: Joe Mauer, C The case for him is stronger than it might have seemed while he was active. He'll be quite the debate in five years.

White Sox: Chris Sale, LHP He'll need some amazing years over the next half-decade -- maybe finally winning one of those Cy Youngs would help -- but he's unlikely to pitch in any one place longer than his seven years in Chicago.

WEST

Angels: Mike Trout, CF The only danger is if he ends up playing somewhere else and puts up another 10 historic seasons. One should not put it past him.

Astros: Jose Altuve, 2B Assuming there isn't a sudden surge in voting for Lance Berkman, Altuve will sail in when he finally retires … which, considering he's 28 now, could be in another 15 years.

Athletics: Matt Chapman, 3B Chapman had an 8.2 bWAR last year at the age of 25. Keep that up -- we make it sound so easy -- and he could be our next Adrian Beltre.

Mariners: Ichiro Suzuki, RF Of course, this will require him officially retiring at some point.

Rangers: Adrian Beltre, 3B It's still strange and sad that we're going to have a baseball season without him in 2019.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

EAST

Braves: Dale Murphy, CF Murphy is perhaps the most beloved non-Hall of Famer on earth (now that Mariano is about to be in); if the Veterans' Committee is opening the doors for Harold Baines, it has to open them for Dale, too.

Marlins: Giancarlo Stanton, OF This comes down to whether or not you think he will get to 500 homers (he's at 305) and spend seven or more seasons in the Bronx.

Mets: Carlos Beltran, CF He played as many seasons in Kansas City as he did in New York, but his numbers were better in Queens across the board.

Nationals: Max Scherzer, RHP Whether Bryce Harper stays with the Nats or not, Scherzer will retire first … and could benefit from what's going to be a changing standard for starting pitchers.

Phillies: Curt Schilling, RHP Even with his off-the-field controversies, based on growing vote totals, it appears he'll eventually get in.

CENTRAL

Brewers: Ryan Braun It's a long shot -- and the PED suspension isn't going to help -- but his case is a little better than many think it is.

Cardinals: Albert Pujols, 1B The healing process will begin this June, when Albert plays at Busch Stadium for the first time since he left town. Services contracts aside, it'll be the STL on his plaque.

Cubs: Kris Bryant, 3B If Clemens and Bonds get in, there could be a "how do you tell the story of baseball without Sammy Sosa?" Veterans Committee pick of Sosa. If not, Bryant is the pick -- that is, unless Anthony Rizzo has a late-career surge that takes his baseball card stats to a new level.

Pirates: Andrew McCutchen, OF Beyond the Box Score gave him a 40 percent chance before last season, which is maybe a little high. One wonders if he would receive more support someday if he had played his whole career in Pittsburgh.

Reds: Joey Votto, 1B Is Votto already a HOF lock? It's perhaps a lot closer of a discussion than you might think.

WEST

D-backs: Paul Goldschmidt The late start to his career put him behind from the beginning, but another eight years even close to his first eight years would be quite the compelling case. And D-backs fans can take solace knowing he'd go in wearing their hat.

Dodgers: Clayton Kershaw, LHP The only question is whether it will say "World Series Champion" on his plaque.

Giants: Bonds, OF In the same boat as Clemens, with 2022 as the last-chance year. Talk radio in 2022 is going to be difficult to listen to, one suspects.

Padres: Fernando Tatis Jr., SS Like the Jays and Vlad Jr., there is not a more obvious suggestion.

Rockies: Larry Walker, RF He's headed for a huge uptick in votes this year; it really looks like it's going to happen.
