TRIPITAKA - the lost spiritual sequel to Cosmology of Kyoto was found
This post is a compilation of a series of tweets I have composed over a period of weeks during this summer.
For years, it was uncertain whether TRIPITAKA 玄奘三蔵求法の旅, by Soft Edge, had in fact ever been published. I remind the more absent-minded readers that this is the studio responsible for the mythical CD-ROM Cosmology of Kyoto, originally released in Japan in 1993, later published in the United States by Yano Electric in 1995. Knowledge of this their second and final production comes solely from the online CVs of producers Hiroshi Ōnishi and Mori Kōichi. No other information could be found online, and no actual copy of the game was known to exist.
Earlier this year, this disc surfaced at Yahoo Auctions. It sold for nearly $300 after 24 bids.
As suggested by its tile, which translates to Xuanzang Sanzo's Dharma-Seeking Journey, it was always assumed that the game illustrated episodes of the life of the celebrated Chinese Buddhist monk, particularly his 7th century pilgrimage to India. The captures printed on the back not only show a character highly reminiscent of the ancient scholar, they depict a variety of scenes taking place in China and India.
According to the severely incomplete archived version of PD Inc's website, the Japanese publisher responsible for this digipack, it was available for sale at museums hosting the 1999 Silk Road Journey To The West exhibition, which suitably matches the date printed on the back cover. However, this date presents yet another open question, as the Ōnishi-San and Kōichi-San bios both list it as a 1995 production.
The technical specifications may provide an enlightening clue, as they refer to Windows 95, 640x480px resolution and an 8-Bit color mode. This indicates that TRIPITAKA was indeed developed sometime between 1993 and 1995, although it was never published in the CD-ROM game circuit, certainly not in the immediate years after its development was completed. Combined with the data retrieved from the publisher's website, the edition shown here appears to have been produced solely for the occasion, as a means to diversify the museum shop catalog for this major exhibit, given the shared theme.
It would have been nearly impossible, had the program been in fact published in 1995, for a single copy to not have been spotted or mentioned online by the many Japanese collectors who have attempted to locate it for decades, unsuccessfully. On the other hand, a CD-ROM that was sold at a museum exhibit is likely to be purchased by visitors who were entirely unaware of the item's relevance as an elusive multimedia gem.
If a tangent is permitted here, both productions are inextricably linked with the museum space, and as far as I can speculate, Cosmology of Kyoto was, itself, also published with the intention of being made available in gallery stores in addition to computer game retailers. I say this because this was a production made possible by collaborative efforts including a variety of Japanese museums, to the extent these are referenced by name in the game's credits.
Considering the price at which the item was sold at auction, I was fairly certain that it was purchased by one such video game collector who knew exactly what they were bidding for. Later in July, I was able to locate the buyer and establish contact. Initially, the buyer was only able to produce this screenshot of the disc program launcher. The title reads "Cosmology of Asia", validating the claims that Soft Edge was in effect planning for series of edutainment software prior to its demise in the mid-90s.
In my second contact with the owner, I asked if he was available to produce a disc image and share it online for purposes of software preservation. The owner politely declined, stating that this was not something he was willing to do but offered to record the following gameplay video instead.

At a glance, the art style of Tripitaka is unsurprisingly similar to that of Cosmology. Most of its episodes occur during the day, whereas the latter was mostly played under the dark cover of night. The first scene depicts a dying Xuanzang reminiscing on his journeys in the company of a young chronicler. Structurally, both games are also nearly indistinguishable from one another, producing ample historical information for context, including detailed maps and chronologies.
TRIPITAKA was considered to be lost media for decades. As such, the importance of this footage could hardly be overstated. I would not hesitate to compare this development to the unearthing of Osamu Sato's Chu-Teng, the Eastern Mind sequel that was also deemed lost for many years, miraculously found during the time this blog was inactive.
I am delighted to have played a minor role in the unraveling of this thirty year old mystery, and can hardly contain my enthusiasm, as I now find myself equipped with sufficient information to produce a full post concerning a game about which I could not have written more than a sentence, just last year.

For your TFA OP is Megatron's child, what does he do when he realizes? Does he tell anyone, does he deny it? Does he go and hide from the world for a while? Or does he pretend not to see the resemblance and start "tracing" what happened to "the sparkling" (it'll give him more time)? Or is it more like he does several of these?
He's in a state of shock at first. He doesn't believe it, this can't be true! He- His first memories are of waking up with his batchmates when he was first brought online as a protoform, this is impossible! He was constructed cold, just as everyone was, he- he isn't... he's not a...
But the evidence is right there in front of him. He quietly shuts off the datapad and deletes his trail of research. This can't be happening! He leaves early that day, hurrying home to his apartment and locking the doors + windows. His servos are shaking and by the time he realizes it, he barely has time to plop down into a chair before a full blown wave of panic crashes over his body. His vents spin out of control as he struggles to cool his rapidly heating frame, optics taken over by tinnitus as he curls into himself.
He was so little when they took him, sparklinghood amnesia took care of most of the pesky memories, and he had a memory blocker installed. But now that he knows, the old software does little good, and there's already cracks starting to leak through the blockade. It's like a dam has suddenly broken in his mind and he's assaulted by an ocean of memories.
Suddenly 🥺 he remembers the warmth of his carrier's love. Remembers a huge, gentle hand on his face, a voice speaking in a language that's now extinct on modern day Cybertron, calling him a name that's achingly familiar. He remembers being held close and warm to a giant spark, pulsing so intensely he could feel it thrumming through his whole body, washing him with waves of endless love and affection. He remembers... strange people, suddenly storming into the mineshaft where his mother worked. He remembers stun batons and electric prods and screaming, so much screaming. Remembers seeing blood spill as his mother tore someone's helm clean off their body, roaring at them to get their hands off his sparkling. He remembers being grabbed and thrown into a cage of some sort, a turbohound kennel for transport, crying and holding the bars, rattling them with his tiny chubby hands and braying hysterically for his mother. He remembers seeing his carrier fall, stunned unconscious, and being hauled away despite his pleas.
He remembers all of this while his body is in the clutches of an intense panic attack, the memories overwhelming and threatening to consume him. He lays there in the dark of his apartment, all lights off and curled up in the corner as if he could hide from the war going on inside his helm, crying brokenly into his arms. His spark aches in his chassis, throbbing as it expands and contracts in a desperate bid for another. How long has it been? When did that happen? When did they take him? Why did they take him? If he's not cold constructed why did they pretend he was, why put him in boot camp and make him an autobot prime? Questions swirl around his mind faster than even Blurr could speak, and he's honestly not surprised when he suddenly crashes
Optimus wakes up on the floor of his apartment hours later, in the dead of night, when everything is still and silent and so, so dark. Sitting there staring at the ceiling, he can feel panic already gnawing on him again, but he stubbornly tries to push it away. He needs to figure out what to do.

Ather Energy IPO listing: On the NSE, Ather Energy share price on listing was ₹328, a premium of 2.18%. Meanwhile, on the BSE, the stock debuted at 1.57% premium. The listing was lower than what the grey market signalled, as ahead of the stock market debut, Ather Energy IPO GMP today was ₹14.

Ather Energy IPO listing: Ather Energy, the first mainboard initial public offering of the financial year 2025-26 (FY26), witnessed a lukewarm debut in the Indian stock market on Tuesday, May 6, as it listed at just a 2% premium over its issue price of ₹321.
On the NSE, Ather Energy share price on listing was ₹328, a premium of 2.18%. Meanwhile, on the BSE, Ather Energy shares debuted at ₹326.05, up 1.57%.
The listing was lower than what the grey market signalled, as ahead of the stock market debut, Ather Energy IPO GMP today was ₹14. This indicates that in the grey market, Ather Energy shares were trading at ₹335 apiece, a premium of 4.36%.
Ather Energy shares, meanwhile, reversed listing gains and traded in the red around 10.20 am. On the NSE, Ather Energy share price was down 1.33% from its listing price at ₹323.65, while on the BSE, the stock dipped 0.8% to ₹323.45.
Ather Energy IPO Details
Ather Energy IPO, which was open for subscription from April 28 to April 30, witnessed a modest demand for its issue. The IPO of the electric vehicle (EV) manufacturer was subscribed 1.50 times at the end of the three-day bidding period, amid strong buying demand from retail investors and qualified institutional buyers. Meanwhile, the non-institutional investor portion wasn’t fully booked.
The QIB portion was subscribed 1.76 times, the NII portion 0.69 times and the retail investor portion 1.89 times. The employee portion was booked 5.43 times as of April 30.
The company raised ₹2,981.06 crore at the upper end of the price band of ₹321 apiece. The IPO was a mix of fresh share sale of ₹2,626.30 crore and an offer for sale by promoters and other selling shareholders of ₹354.76 crore.
Ather Energy plans to use the funds raised from the IPO’s fresh issue for various purposes like capex for the establishment of an E2W factory in Maharashtra, repayment of certain corporate borrowings availed by the company, investment in R&D and for marketing initiatives or other general corporate purposes.

Ather Energy is a pure-play EV company that sells E2Ws and the associated product ecosystem, comprised of its software, charging infrastructure and smart accessories.
The company was founded in 2013 by Tarun Sanjay Mehta and Swapnil Babanlal Jain. It has a market share of 11.5% as of the financial year 2024 (FY24) and is the third-largest player by volume.
However, despite being a prominent brand in the EV two-wheeler market, the company has consistently incurred losses since its inception.
Ather, in its RHP, said that it has incurred losses since its incorporation and had stagnant revenue growth in FY24. “There is no assurance that we will be cost-effective in our operations or achieve profitability in the future,” according to the company’s RHP.
In FY24, Ather’s loss before taxes amounted to ₹1059.7 crore, significantly higher than ₹864.5 crore in FY23 and ₹344.1 crore in FY22. It also had stagnant revenue growth in FY24 as it posted a revenue of ₹1753.8 crore compared with ₹1780.9 crore in FY23.
