Nathaniel Taylor (March 31, 1938 – February 27, 2019) was a television and film actor known for portraying Rollo Lawson on Sanford and Son, Grady, and Sanford.

He acted in several movies and TV shows and created a performing arts studio. Some of the major shows where he acted are The Redd Foxx Show, Police Story, and What’s Happening!!. He was in the films Trouble Man and Willie Dynamite.

He was working as an electrician at the Performing Arts Society of Los Angeles. His mentor, Larry Clark, suggested he try out for a part. Clark had him read a few lines to him and sent him down to Redd Foxx’s room. He played Rerun’s brother–in–law, Ike, in the sitcom What’s Happening!!. He guest-starred in episodes of The Bill Cosby Show, Adam 12, and Police Story.

He was in As Above, So Below. He starred in The Hunter. He was in the short film Auditioning for Nathaniel.

BlueLine Classics, LLC bought the original 1951 Ford F1 used in Sanford and Son. The owners, Jeff Canter, and Tim Franko loved the idea of restoring the Ford. After it was restored, in October 2015, they decided to reunite a cast member with the truck they preserved. Canter searched for him on Facebook and could not find him. He found him the old-fashioned way and contacted him. He called Canter and agreed to sign autographs with the restored Ford truck in October 2015. He was asked to sign autographs at the Hard Rock Rocksino Northfield Park with the 1951 Ford F1 ‘Sanford and Son Salvage truck.

He was married to Loretta until his death. Together they had two children. He had five children from a previous marriage to Bernice Gordon-Taylor. #africanhistory365 #africanexcellence

“Paul Admits Two Counts,” Windsor Star. November 28, 1939. Page 10. ---- Four Dresden Men Face Charges in Lambton Crime Spree --- From the Sarnia Bureau of The Windsor Star. SARNIA, Nov. 28. - Four Dresden men faced charges in magistrate’s court today as a sequel of a provincial police investigation into a South Lambton crime spree which included breaking and entering and theft.

PLEAD NOT GUILTY WALTER TURNER and Gordon Hodgson, both of Dresden, who were apprehended at Listowel late Sunday night by Provincial Constable Oldield Chief C. F. Rocher and Constable Herbert Jobb, of Listowel, were charged with burglary of the Melvin Taylor store at Bradford, South Lambton, on Saturday. Both pleaded not guilty and were remanded December 6 for trial.

The pair was arrested by Listowel police when they received a report that the men were acting in a suspicious manner in the district. They were taken to Stratford, and brought to Sarnia late yesterday by Provincial Constable R. J. Whiting and Andy Grant.

Turner and Hodgson were charged today with breaking into the Taylor store and taking away a safe containing $80 along with other merchandise, and breaking a lock on a gasoline pump and stealing 10 gallons of gasoline and three quarts of oil.

SENTENCE DELAYED Two additional charges were read to Hodgson and he pleaded guilty to both. He admitted stealing a quantity of lightning road wire from barns owned by Earl Haris and Robert Lofer, of Sombra Township. Hodgson will be sentenced on these charges after he has his trails on the burglary counts.

Two other Dresden youths were also charged with theft of wire from the Harris and Loter barns. These were David Hyatt, 18, and Wilfred Christener, 17.

Both pleaded guilty and were given suspended sentence on condition that they pay court costs of $20 each.

‘These boys didn’t steal anything,’ Hodgson told the court. ‘It was I. They were just working for me.’

TWO EMPLOYES Crown Attorney Harry M. Taylor explained that Hodgson, Dresden electrician, drove his car to the Harris and Lofer premises, and that Hyatt and Christener, his employes, accompanied him.

‘The boys were present and had knowledge of the theft of the wire, but they received no benefit,’ Mr. Taylor said. ‘The Hodgson car was parked up to each barn, the end of the wire was attached to the vehicle, and it was pulled off the barn by the car.’

Both farms are unoccupied and damage at each place was estimated at $20.

Provincial Constable R. J. Whiting of Sarnia had been seeking Turner and Hodgson since the Bradshaw store was broken into early last Saturday morning. There a quantity of cigarettes and other merchandise was gathered up and the safe carted away.

Police searched Hodgson’s rooms in Listowel and it is alleged part of the stolen goods was recovered. The second charge of theft of wire against Hodgson is the outcome of disappearance of copper wire in Sombra Township. On charge of theft of this wire David Hyatt and Wilfred Christner of Dresden are now held in jail here. Hodgson will be jointly charged with them in this theft.

Here is is understood Elgin police have charges against both Turner and Hodgson but local officers have no definite word on where these charges will be faced. BAD CHEQUE CHARGES ST. THOMAS, Ont., Nov. 28 - The arrest at Listowell of Gordon Hodgson and Walter Turner, both former residents of Dresden, is said by police to clear up a small epidemic of bogus cheques that occurred on Nov. 18 in West Lorne and Dutton. The two men have been taken to Sarnia by Chief Constable Whiting, and the local charges will be sent there.

Provincial Constable Frank Kelly said Turner was employed during the summer in the Eagle. West Lorne District by John Doub, a tobacco farmer. He went under the name of Walter McMIllan, police said.

On Nov. 18, McMillan or Turner is alleged to have attempted to pass a forged cheque under the name of Harold Hand, at Reeve Earl Lemon’s store in West Lorne. Hodgson is said to have identified himself as Charlie Rand. When Reeve Lemon saw the cheque, he suspected something was wrong and began to make some inquiries. The two men fled to Dutton where police claim Hodgson succeeded in passing two cheques for a total of $28.

The episode was used by the county council at an argument for distribution of the provincial police to centres east and west of St. Thomas.

At around ten o'clock in the evening of July 6th 1988 the Piper Alpha oil platform in the North Sea was rocked by a huge explosion.

The 30th anniversary of the disaster will be remembered at a special memorial service tonight in Aberdeen at the Piper Alpha Memorial Garden in Hazlehead Park. The names of all 167 men who lost their lives on July 6 1988 will be read out during the ceremony to be attended by their relatives, friends and representatives from the oil and gas sector.

The vast human tragedy of that day sent shockwaves around the world and forced the industry to take a painstaking look at its practices. On that night, there were more than 220 men on board Piper Alpha, with most in the accommodation section and more than 60 working on the night shift.

After a gas leak on the North Sea platform a series of explosions followed and, minutes later, it was engulfed in a fireball. By the time the rescue helicopters arrived, flames were reaching 300ft and could be seen from 70 miles away. The smoke and fire made evacuation by helicopter or lifeboat impossible, and many people gathered in the accommodation area. Remaining there meant certain death. With the platform ablaze and exploding, some men jumped off from 175ft above the North Sea. Others plunged from lower levels or clambered down ropes and hoses before plummeting into the water. There were only 62 survivors that night in what remains the world’s worst offshore disaster. An inquiry led by Lord Cullen opened in Aberdeen in January 1989, ended in February the following year, and published its report of several hundred pages nine months after that. It led to North Sea safety being shifted from the Department of Energy to the Health and Safety Executive, and meant that automatic shut-down valves were made mandatory on rigs to starve a fire of fuel.

Hello and welcome to the latest edition of Up Close & Personal!  It’s fair to say that we have a bit of glamour with us today, but behind the beauty is a steely lady with a passion for business.  It’s not all male and stale here at Renegades you’ll be pleased to know.  So, from my point of view this lady is an inspiration. Hailing originally from South Africa. . . It must be something about the climate there that breeds these entrepreneur types, because this is the second straight talking South African person that I’ve interviewed for this magazine. This lady was introduced to me about 6 months ago and I’m proud to say that she’s a member of my Mastermind Group, and a valid member of the Oak Group to say the least. She has an awesome back story that I hope she’ll touch on today, which saw her starting a business after being very successful in real estate; and quite honestly has been pretty successful at everything she’s ever put her mind to. She built her business herself with a lot of help from her fantastic husband, Alex. And not only catered for and supplied most of the BMW dealerships in South Africa, but then tendered for and won the catering contract for the South African defence force, which saw her feeding over 27,000 troops a day. At its hay day she built her business to 360 staff and over a 100 million rand per year. After the collapse of the rand and with the government in disarray, this saw her come to the shores of England, which is our gain obviously. She now runs CICS, a specialist industrial and commercial cleaning solutions business, which proudly claims to save 1 million people a month from infections like MRSA. She has specialist cleaned more than 10 thousand police cells and says she has even cleaned things from Gordon Ramsey’s kitchen to the crane that built the Olympic Stadium.  And so, I’m very honoured to introduce the Duchess of Dust, the Queen of Clean. . . Shayne Warden! Shayne, how are you today?

Shayne Warden:  I’m very well thank you.  How are you Steve?

Steve Matthews:  You’ve got to live up to the intro now.

SW:  I certainly do, don’t I.

SM:  Everybody says, “oh no, I’ve got to live up to that now”. Obviously, there’s so much in there that we could talk about, but I said something about this back story of yours.  We need to fill in gaps, I think.  Where are you from originally? How did you get this fantastic work ethic, that I know you’ve got, and is it true that you worked in a clothes shop when you were 7 years old?

SW:  I did indeed. I was only 7.  I worked for my parents. The building actually belonged to my Grandfather and parents rented a shop off him selling men’s, ladies and children’s wear. My mother would drop me off at school in the morning, I’d go to school, she’d pick me up, have my food cooking on a gas stove in the back, I’d do my homework and then be out the front selling.

SM:  Never. You told me a great story before about you taking your own takings.

SW:  Yes, I did. Unbeknown to my Mum, I took a draw which I turned into a till and I landed up taking more than my Mother did for the day.  She was angry and flabbergasted at the same time.  Telling me, “Don’t you ever do that again”.

SM:  So, obviously you had that entrepreneurial spirit from a very young age. Is it fair to say that?

SW:  I’d say so, yes. . . Growing up with entrepreneurs around me.

SM:  I don’t know what the education system is like in South Africa, but did you go to college or did you get into work as soon as you left school?

SW:  Steve, do you really want to know the truth?

SM:  Yes, go on.

SW:  I left school in Standard 6, nobody knows that, not even my children. My husband does but not my children.

SM:  So, Standard 6, how old was that?

SW:  Before you go to senior school here in the UK.

SM:  Never!

SW:  Yes, so I never finished my schooling, I obviously went into the business, I ran shops of my own.  I then left and I landed up doing my Matric, which is your final year via correspondence through Damelin College.

SM:  So, you’d have left school at about 12 years old?

SW:  I was 12 or 13, yes.  So, I got my Matric and then went on to get my MBA.

SM:  I think there’s such an emphasis, especially in this country now, these kids are put under so much pressure.  My son has just finished his GCSE’s and it was very difficult for me as a parent. I know exams are important and education is important, of course it is, but it all depends what you want to do. If you want to be a lawyer or a doctor, then it’s massively important.  But if you want to be a plumber or an electrician, it’s important that you get hands on and earn your stripes as early as you can. I always love to see when people buck the trend of saying that you’ve got to have all this education and qualifications, but you did it after school, which is amazing. So, you did working in the shops. Where did you go from there then? Obviously, I guess you then wanted to branch out on your own, did you?

SW:  I did.  I left home at a pretty young age.  I lived a very sheltered life, I must admit. I landed up meeting a man who I married and had 2 children with. The marriage was a disaster to be quite honest. I actually went to secretarial college and I learnt to become a secretary. This was prior to my MBA, and so I got my ground in this.  I got a lot of temp jobs for Kelly Personnel and Drake, and I worked with lots of inspirational people. I then got myself a full-time job with a company called Lazarus and Associates and I was Kenny Verhague’s PA.  Kenny obviously saw that I had something unique, and I used to handle a lot of the divorce matters and senior matters for him. I used to actually take the clients off to counsel on my own. He was going to be putting me through an actual law degree, and the husband that I had at the time thought I was having an affair. This was because he had a 450 Merc, he used to drive me home and bring me back.  But there was nothing of that there at all, absolutely nothing.  Anyway, that job came to an end, then I carried on working, I worked for Long Thomas & Anglo and quite a few other jobs. I always chased the money where I could earn extra. I then moved to a completely different area and I managed to get the man I was married to a better job. I went with my Mum into the centre of Johannesburg one day, she didn’t say a word to me, but took me up to the top floor of a building and paid a fee over. She then said, “just sign this piece of paper”, so, I just signed it as I was told. When we came out of the building, she said to me, “right, you’re an estate agent now, how do you feel?” I thought, “God Mum, no different to what I was 2 minutes ago”. She said, “Right “now go and get yourself a job in real estate”.  My Mother was doing exceptionally well in real estate, she really was. So, I got myself a job and I did very well in real estate.  Obviously, I’d met Alex. He was my ex-husbands boss. He was after me for about a whole year and eventually we got together. Alex had a caravan and I’d take this caravan and park it in a prominent position. . . Remember there was no internet in those days or anything like that. I am probably BC… Before computers.

SM: BC, I like that.

SW:  I negotiated a deal with the owner of the garage and parked the caravan there every single weekend. What I did was, I took pictures of every single house that there was in the area and I put them onto large display boards.  Inside the caravan I’d have tea, coffee, champagne, beer and wine. And while Alex was entertaining them, I was driving them around showing them houses and taking the offers in. What can I say, I was actually the queen of real estate. I really was.

SM:  Funnily enough, we’ve done a Strengths Scope exercise earlier this week which identifies your strengths, and one of yours was creativity, wasn’t it (I’ll tell everybody later on who ‘we’ are).  But I bet nobody else was doing that were they?

SW:  No, nobody else was doing it.

SM:  Sometimes we do things without thinking about it don’t we, but when you think about that, it was a kind of disruptive advertising wasn’t it. So, you were putting those houses in front of people when they weren’t even looking. You were proactive, as opposed to most estate agents who just sit behind a desk, but you were actually putting it right out there.

SW:  Yes, I was.  I never thought of it as disruptive marketing, but you’re probably quite correct.

SM:  You’ve got so many names for it now, you’ve got disruptive, direct response, but literally you were just creative in a way that you were trying to do that.

SW:  I did very well at it I must admit, but I then lost my edge because my Mother could see what was happening.  So, she said for me to go along and work for her in her business, but when you’re getting 50% of nothing as opposed to 50% of a decent commission it makes a big difference. So, of course the income wasn’t quite there. Also, I changed from the area I was in, to a more affluent area and obviously I wasn’t known in that area. I landed up having to get myself a job thereafter and I got myself a job working with DHL.

SM:  The courier yea?

SW:  Yep, and so I got a job as a senior sales consultant who only looked after the blue chip clients.  Then I was poached by TNT Sky Pack, I worked for them for quite a long while.  I did my Sales Marketing Diploma with them and I won a trip to the UK.  What I’d actually done was, I’d sold pre-paid flyers, which is basically just an envelope. So, I sold a client pre-paid flyers at a reduced rate for 2 years and obviously I exceeded quite a few of my targets there. I had a very, very lucrative area and did exceptionally well with them. They had quite a lot of management change, people coming in from Bahrain etc, so I then decided that I should go home and look after the children. So, I went home and looked after the kids and that lasted all of 2 weeks of my life. And then Alex said that they were looking for someone to do catering at the Working Man’s Club at ESKOM, Rosherville, so I took that on. From there I started doing cricket functions, soccer functions, masonic functions. . . .

On Inauguration Day, Washington offers portrait of a polarized America

WASHINGTON--”We all want the same thing,” President Donald Trump said Friday to members of Congress and other dignitaries. “We’re all good people, whether you’re a Republican or Democrat, it doesn’t make any difference. We’re going to get along.”

President Trump’s message of goodwill at the traditional post-inaugural congressional luncheon seemed more an expression of hope over reality, in a political system that has grown increasingly polarized over the years.

And as violence broke out on the streets of Washington Friday--away from the inaugural festivities but aimed at marring an otherwise orderly transfer of presidential power--it was clear that words alone will not be enough to heal the nation’s divisions.

Protesters threw rocks, smashed windows, and lit small fires; police deployed tear gas and flash bangs. Six officers were injured, and 217 protesters were arrested. The last time there was large-scale unrest at an inauguration was in 1969, when antiwar protests led to dozens of arrests.

In all, it made for moments of anger and frustration, but violence didn’t typify the day. Groups of people wearing “Make America Great Again” caps walked by anti-Trump groups wearing pink knitted hats--the headgear of choice for Saturday’s big women’s march--and seemed to largely ignore each other.

Inauguration Day, of course, brings many who wish to celebrate and support the man they sent to Washington. Theirs were expressions of joy on a day meant to celebrate a hallmark of American democracy--the peaceful transfer of power.

The Graham family--mom, dad, and college student son--drove in overnight from Bristol, Tenn., to show their support for the new president, waving Trump flags and wearing Trump hats and T-shirts.

None had ever attended an inauguration before. So why now?

“Because I’m a huge supporter of Donald Trump, and I think he’ll make America great again,” said Steve Graham, an electrician.

How? Mr. Graham has a ready list: fixing the economy, securing the border, strengthening the military. “I think he’s a man of his word, and he’ll hold true to it.”

His wife, Darlene Graham, a realtor, says her No. 1 reason for supporting Trump is “his stand with Jesus Christ and his support for the state of Israel.”

Mr. Graham expects quick action, and quick results. Ms. Graham gives Trump a year to improve the nation. And son Justin says he’ll assess Trump’s performance by the midterm elections in 2018.

Everybody, it seemed, was eager to express their opinions--with both supporters and detractors expressing outsize views about the man and what he can accomplish.

Mary Moga did not vote for Trump. Nor did she vote for Hillary Clinton. And yet, standing before the festooned Capitol as the seated inaugural audience began to break up, she described the experience as “electric” and “surreal.” She came, she said, because “it’s about the US.”

But she also came to march. Ms. Moga, who is from Seattle, and her cousin, Debby Burger of San Diego, both plan to take part in the Women’s March on Washington Saturday. Ms. Burger campaigned for Hillary Clinton.

Just as a reporter asked what they thought of the speech, Moga’s daughter--one of five children she’s raised--passed by answering, “It was a joke.”

Cousin Burger chimed in. “He’s promising all these things he never could do.”

“I just hope and pray he surrounds himself with quality people,” added Moga.

Chad Suenram, standing rows away from where Donald Trump had just given his inauguration speech, came away feeling completely the opposite.

He says he was “blown away.” What he really liked was Trump’s message about “the positivity of the US prospering, of everyone growing together and just bringing back America.”

The promise of prosperity was the main reason Mr. Suenram, who has four kids, voted for Trump.

The Kansan, wearing an “All Lives Matter” button on his sweatshirt, says he came from “a struggle,” growing up in a trailer park. He started his own business in landscaping and has combined it with a foreclosure business. Through that, he’s seen a lot of families get kicked out of their homes.

“Like Barack Obama said, ‘It’s time for change,’ “ Suenram grinned. The businessman, who jumped on a plane at the last minute to get to Washington, echoed much of what Trump said in his inaugural speech. His greatest hope for the years ahead is that America prosper, “and for the wealth to come back to the common people.”

For Gordon Swanson, a retired Boeing employee from Everett, Wash., who flew in two days ago to celebrate, the joy of watching Trump came with a bitter note. He hadn’t put on his crisp, red “Make America Great Again” cap until he arrived at Union Station that morning, when inauguration revelers began to arrive.

“I knew I potentially would be challenged by somebody” who didn’t agree with Trump, he said. “It didn’t used to be this way,” he lamented, saying that the country had turned too far to the left under President Obama, whom he described as “negligent.”

This day was about the future, he said.

“I hope his nominee for the Supreme Court will have a big effect. I’m not so worried about myself, but I’ve got three grandkids,” he said, perched on a stool beside an eatery at Union Station, Washington’s main train station.

Outside the secure inauguration area, the scene was dramatically different. By early afternoon, thousands of protesters walked down I Street toward Franklin Square waving posters for Black Lives Matter, Dakota Access Pipeline resistance, and lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual rights.

The march seemed orderly enough--thousands of people sticking to the streets while pedestrians took pictures from the sidewalks, some of them wearing “Make America Great Again” hats. But an undercurrent of hostility eventually broke through.

A nearby Starbucks and Bank of America ATM station had their glass windows shattered by protesters. Armed guards stood nearby to prevent looting, and stores put up makeshift “closed” signs--though customers were still inside.

Pro- and anti-Trump chants sprang up, with one protester telling a young man in a red hat, “Join us. We are doing this for you, too.”

Eventually, some of the demonstrators began throwing rocks and bottles at police officers. Newspaper vending machines outside The Washington Post were tipped over and set on fire. At other locations around the city, protesters tried to block access to various inaugural events, though there were no other reports of violence.
