Human Research, Robotic Refueling, Crystallography and More Headed to Orbiting Lab

New science is headed to the International Space Station aboard the SpaceX Dragon.

Investigations on this flight include a test of robotic technology for refueling spacecraft, a project to map the world’s forests and two student studies inspired by Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” series.

The Global Ecosystem Dynamics Investigation (GEDI) is an instrument to measure and map Earth’s tropical and temperate forests in 3D.

The Jedi knights may help protect a galaxy far, far away, but our GEDI will help us study and understand forest changes right here on Earth.

Robotic refueling in space

What’s cooler than cool? Cryogenic propellants, or ice-cold spacecraft fuel! Our Robotic Refueling Mission 3 (RRM3) will demonstrate technologies for storing and transferring these special liquids. By establishing ways to replenish this fuel supply in space, RRM3 could help spacecraft live longer and journey farther.

The mission’s techniques could even be applied to potential lunar gas stations at the Moon, or refueling rockets departing from Mars.

Staying strong in space

The Molecular Muscle investigation examines the molecular causes of muscle abnormalities from spaceflight in C. elgans, a roundworm and model organism.

This study could give researchers a better understanding of why muscles deteriorate in microgravity so they can improve methods to help crew members maintain their strength in space.

Investigation studies space-grown crystals for protection against radiation

Perfect Crystals is a study to learn more about an antioxidant protein called manganese superoxide dismutase that protects the body from the effects of radiation and some harmful chemicals.

The station’s microgravity environment allows researchers to grow more perfectly ordered crystals of the proteins. These crystals are brought back to Earth and studied in detail to learn more about how the manganese superoxide dismutase works. Understanding how this protein functions may aid researchers in developing techniques to reduce the threat of radiation exposure to astronauts as well as prevent and treat some kinds of cancers on Earth.

Satellite deployment reaching new heights with SlingShot

SlingShot is a new, cost-effective commercial satellite deployment system that will be tested for the first time.

SlingShot hardware, two small CubeSats, and a hosted payload will be carried to the station inside SpaceX’s Dragon capsule and installed on a Cygnus spacecraft already docked to the orbiting laboratory. Later, Cygnus will depart station and fly to a pre-determined altitude to release the satellites and interact with the hosted payload.

Investigation studies accelerated aging in microgravity

Spaceflight appears to accelerate aging in both humans and mice. Rodent Research-8 (RR-8) is a study to understand the physiology of aging and the role it plays on the progression of disease in humans. This investigation could provide a better understanding of how aging changes the body, which may lead to new therapies for related conditions experienced by astronauts in space and people on Earth.

Guardians of the space station: Student contest flies to orbiting lab

The MARVEL ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ Space Station Challenge is a joint project between the U.S. National Laboratory and Marvel Entertainment featuring two winning experiments from a contest for American teenage students. For the contest, students were asked to submit microgravity experiment concepts that related to the Rocket and Groot characters from Marvel’s “Guardians of the Galaxy” comic book series.

Team Rocket: Staying Healthy in Space

If an astronaut suffers a broken tooth or lost filling in space, they need a reliable and easy way to fix it. This experiment investigates how well a dental glue activated by ultraviolet light would work in microgravity. Researchers will evaluate the use of the glue by treating simulated broken teeth and testing them aboard the station.

Team Groot: Aeroponic Farming in Microgravity

This experiment explores an alternative method for watering plants in the absence of gravity using a misting device to deliver water to the plant roots and an air pump to blow excess water away. Results from this experiment may enable humans to grow fruits and vegetables in microgravity, and eliminate a major obstacle for long-term spaceflight.

Well it went under readmore, but I have a few little things to say. Like an impressum or an index. What every spot means. Last four are NSFW headcanon based.

Name - The muses name, can be given name and last name, sometimes only given name.

Fandom - Which fandom are they in, they can also be in other fandoms. But this one is the main fandom. Where their originally are meant to be in.

Age - The muses age.

Zodiac - Their zodiac sign

Gender - Their gender, that is what they are born with or identify as. Example for Diran, he identifies as male more than as female. Maron is born female but disguises herself as male.

Sexuality - What sexuality the muses have. This is specific for sexual relations and not specifically romantic relations. More like what sex/gender they prefer for having sex with.

Romantic Interest - Their interest in romantic relations, this can differ from their sexuality. Some muses would sleep with any sex/gender but only have a romantic relation with a specific one. Example: Etienne, open for sex with anyone but is only interested in guys when it comes to some thing romantic.

Sex Drive - How willing they are to have sex or nsfw content. Those with high (sex drive) are more open, average/medium sex drive are open but noit as eager. Muses with low sex drive need a bit of coaxing. Those with no sex drive are never availble for sexual content. Example: Drealav, Maron, Sethius (although it can vary with him, he is always eager with muses he is in a romantic relationship with), Quentius, Danny.

Shipping - What type of shipping their are open with. Example: Multiship, the muse is available for any type of ship. Singleship - The muse has a canon ship in their main verse which will not change - Sethius with Narya, Madadh with Nyx and Renius with Vivia. No Ship - The muse is not available for shipping.

Height - The muses height

Weight - The muses weight.

Face Claim - What the muse looks like, or in the mass effect characters point, what they would look like as human.

Voice Claim - What the muse sounds like in their original form.

Occupation - What is the muse doing for a living.

Race - The muses race (human, dwarf, elf, qunari, turian, salarian, krogan, asari, quarian, god)

Class - Their specific class (mage, rogue, warrior, infiltrator, soldier, engineer)

Nationality/P.O.B. - POB = Place of birth, the nationality of the muse. Where the muse comes from.

Which production that had the biggest impact on you?

I’m useless at having to choose one, so I’m not going to try! The musicals that my parents (Eleri Cwyfan and Gareth Glyn) wrote for children when I was really young, like Seren Newydd, were a huge influence, the Magdalen that Dad did with Glanaethwy. I have a lot of memories of musicals from Theatr Fach and Theatr Gwynedd and the Eisteddfod when I was younger – I remember something with Cefin Roberts in drag, with a wall being built across the middle of the stage, and the audience split in two, with each half watching the other half disappear – it all made me think what is ‘allowed’ to be done on stage.

That’s the theme that has the biggest impression: the things that project / extend / lengthen. Off the top of my head; Mr Burns by Anne Washburn in the Almeida had an amazingly cool structure, Eraritjaritjaka by Heiner Goebbels in the EIF (it started with a dollhouse on stage, and slowly, amongst other things a man, robots, camera crew, more robots, an orchestra, and a full-sized house emerged); Sam Mendes’ Cabaret in New York (the back of the stage demolishes at the end of the show and it breaks your heart!) and so on. Recently, I saw 24-Decade History of Popular Music by Taylor Mac in the Barbican, if you get a chance to see this, blimey, it’s brilliant: passionate, funny, crazy drag; that re-tells American history from the perspective of sub-cultures and rebels, using a mixture of lectures, drag, a noson lawen type evening and a game show. Flipping brilliant.

Anyway, one of those I suppose.

When creating / writing new content or a new production, what inspires you?

Anything can. Shows like I’ve mentioned. A good story. I really enjoy dealing with irony and the absurd, and the times when what we say is the total opposite of what we really think. So any news or story that brings out that narrative works for me.

I like to couple up the regular world with the highest levels of fantasy as well, so I love playing video games. Myths is something we created to make sense of the mundane, so why not bring both of them together again.

Also, you get the best costumes when you do that.

When I write I have to find something at its core that makes me uncomfortable: so I fight it alongside the characters. If I don’t do that, I find it hard to connect with the characters and the theme; I don’t think it’s possible; it all stay in the abstract and is soulless.

Like my next show, Milky Peaks, that will open after Covid-19, i started with the question of Welushness. I was raised as a Welsh Nationalist and Eisteddfotwr, to protect our ways no matter what, in a totally uncomplicated way. But then, I found out that Nick Griffin, the Holocoust denier and leader of the BNP at the time had moved to Wales and brought his children up speaking Welsh to avoid ‘Multi-cultural Britain’, because he identified with our fight of ‘us against the outsiders’. That hurt. So writing Milky Peaks was a process to try and work out the poison in the system out, by dealing with it.

I should also mention that this show is a load of fun! All singing-all-dancing, glitter-coming-out-of-the-toilet, a fun night out. Working the poison out can be a riot!

Do you have anything exciting coming up? Be in the near future or when our theatres re-open?

So, as mentioned Milky Peaks will open in Theatr Clwyd and will tour Wales as soon as we can which is brilliant (we were about to open when the lockdown came!)

I have a few exciting things coming up as well, to me at least!

I’ve just finished writing a short show that is completely bonkers during lockdown, to be released online by HOME in Manchester and Lime Pictures called ActualQuest, which is a fantasy game that you play on your phone, inspired by fantasy games like Knightmare by ITV in the 90s, and brilliantly naff VHS board games like Atmosfear.

I’m working on a sexy, fierce and passionate version of Branwen as a musical with Cwmni’r Frân Wen, Hanna Jarman and Elgan Rhys that’s going to be ace, and still developing a drag show about the Orsedd, the Eisteddfod and Iolo Morgannwg, Corn Gwlad, with Elgan and Gethin Evans and the National Eisteddfod. We performed a version with a stunningcast in the Llanrwst Eisteddfod last year.

I’m also writing a musical with the actor and playwright Maxine Peake for the Royal Exchange in Manchester, which is a load of fun.

What would your advice be for young people who wish to work in the industry?

Try and be flexible, and try things. Even if it’s just to find that it’s not for you, you know through experience. Create, even if you think it’s crap, and share: you’ll learn something about yourself. There are more opportunities in the world if you can create your own opportunities, and the less you sit by the phone (or the modern equivalent ... sit by the internet?) waiting for someone to choose you, the better.

It’s bloody frustrating advice, I know, but don’t wait for permission – it’ll come late if it ever does come – find out what you want to do and how to get it accross. Learn from every experience. I did loads of cabaret before making my first show: you had to survive on stage for a night when you hadn’t prepared enough, and the audience is pissed and wants to be entertained, so you have to pull something out of the bag; it teaches you – you either succeed or don’t!

In the same way, filling grant forms or writing a marketing copy for your show, teaches you how to difine yourself and your voice. They’re never fun, but they’re worthwhile. And having a pint with someone who has an expertise in the industry that you don’t is always beneficial; playwright, musican, artist, marketeer... you’ll see things from a different perspective.

Keep open-minded; an honest, bright reaction to the world is a lot more interesting than an inward thinking opinion.

Help eachother; there are forces in society that have a way of making life harder for some than for others, it’s important that we do everything to undo those forces.

Oh, and where possible, don’t agree to work for somebody for free when they have the money. They shouldn’t get away with it.

Neath Rugby Club was once the domestic power in Wales.

They dominated the amateur domestic game in the late 1980s and provided more than half of the Wales team for a match against the Barbarians in 1990.

Now the club’s trading company, Neath Rugby Limited, is facing a winding-up petition in court on 26 November.

So the famous Welsh All Blacks – one of Wales’ oldest and famed clubs – face an uncertain future.

They are among a number of the former great Welsh rugby clubs who have run into trouble in the 23 years since the game became professional.

On the field, Swansea and Llanelli are struggling in the Principality Premiership, where Neath are bottom of the table.

Off the field, Pontypool, long-since relegated from the Premiership, are looking for a new permanent home ground.

History has shown no respect for reputation since regional rugby took over the professional arm of the domestic game in 2003.

But behind the news headline is a sporting tradition.

If you want to measure the importance of Neath Rugby Club in the history of the game in Wales then a quick roll-call of former players provides the answer.

Roy John, Courtenay Meredith, Brian Thomas, Dai Morris, Elgan Rees, Jonathan Davies, Scott Gibbs, Adam Jones and Shane Williams all broke into the mainstream wearing the famous black shirt and Maltese cross.

Billy Boston, the most famous of rugby league wings, played some of his few games in top-flight rugby union for Neath.

This is a small sample. There are many more.

On the field they were the first winners of the Welsh Cup in 1971-72, beating Llanelli in the final.

In the decade leading up to the game becoming professional in 1995 a Neath squad built by Brian Thomas and Ron Waldron was among the most powerful in the land.

They won the Welsh championship in 1987, 1988 and 1990.

A packed Gnoll shook to its foundations to the familiar roar of “Neath, Neath, Neath” as they swept domestic opposition aside gave serious frights to New Zealand in 1989 and South Africa in 1994.

The club always revelled in its role as the outsider, if not always the underdog.

The Welsh Rugby Union was born in a Neath Hotel but Neath RFC were not among the founder members.

They were outside the ranks of Welsh rugby’s big four – Cardiff, Llanelli, Newport and Swansea – and enjoyed knocking them off their perceived pedestals.

So here are three highlights from the history of one of Wales’ great clubs.

Neath claimed the first WRU Challenge Cup crown when they beat Llanelli 15-9 at Cardiff Arms Park.

The Scarlets went on to dominate the Cup, and it was 17 years before the Welsh All Blacks won the trophy again.

That day they edged the Scarlets 14-13 and were back again a year later to beat Bridgend 16-10.

Bath were the top English club of their day while Neath, under Brian Thomas, were a rising power in Wales.

Fly-half Jonathan Davies announced himself to the world outside Wales with a mesmerising display culminating in an outstanding individual try shown repeatedly on national television.

That followed an Elgan Rees interception try – reward for a player who had stuck by the club through difficult times.

A bouncing home crowd left happy that their team had lifted a dull day with some scintillating play.

Neath were involved in three titanic battles with touring teams between 1989 and 1994.

First the All Blacks came to the Gnoll as world champions and were given a run for their money before pulling away to win 26-15 in front of a packed Gnoll.

In 1992 Australia had taken over as world champions and were also pushed hard before emerging 16-8 winners amid accusation by their coach Bob Dwyer of underhand tactics by the home team.

There was no love lost either when South Africa – soon-to-be world champions – were 16-13 winners in 1994 of a match later labelled the “Battle of the Gnoll”.

In the professional era, several players would have seen red. In the amateur era, no one did.

How times change.

With rehearsals for our new show Mags starting on Monday (!), we have been busy preparing with our amazing team – Elgan Rhys (Pluen co-Artistic Director) as dramaturg, Cadi Lane designing, original music & sound by CASI and Eddy Bailhache and Ceri James lighting… as well as questioning and developing story and form with our incredibly skilled mentors Cai Tomos and Hannah McPake.

Rehearsals will bring us back together with our performers – Anna ap Robert, Matteo Marfoglia and Seren Vickers to share the story of a woman called Mags and her relationship to her community and family.

The team are inspiring and dynamic, our development period in 2017 was one of the most vibrant, energized and committed rehearsal rooms I have been lucky enough to be in. I cannot wait to be back in that room!

As well as this team, Mags has been developed with a whole community of inspiring artists – individuals who responded to an open call out for discussion and through working with our partners DadsCan, CAIN & TransForm Cymru.

The exchanges have been joyful, harrowing, inspiring, truthful and we have collectively explored questions on society - what is it to be part of a community? A family? To be part of something greater than ourselves? Which tribes do we find ourselves a part of – whether we want to be or not? How does this affect who we are and the choices we make?

The show our audiences will see is a fusion of movement, bilingual text and live music as we follow Mags’ story - her past, present and future in the small Welsh village she both loves and loathes. Her story is inspired by the people we have met.

Mags and her world does not exist without every cup of tea, biscuit, pint, interview and workshop (including many an amazing lunch – from a café in Cathays with Trans*Form to a picnic on the Menai Strait with CAIN). She is a product of the World she was formed in, like any one of us is.  So, as we head into the next phase of this process, I would like to extend an enormous thank you to the community who has made Mags so far. We had visited the acropolis with our older boys in 2016 and were keen to return with the triplets on our 2018 holiday to Greece. Staying in Vouliagmeni, in our cousin’s holiday apartment, for the week was a perfect opportunity. May half term was very hot by English standards and the triplets at 14 were not best pleased with the suggestion of a sweaty bus ride followed by hiking up some ancient ruins. However part of the deal was that the holiday would be more than just sitting on a beach plugged into WiFi and so we had a truce. To all our delight we found a tourist bus service with open top buses running across the coast road where we were staying and up to Athens.

    Our bus line terminated at the acropolis and covered a very pleasant 40 minutes with the wind in our hair on the top deck . There were free personal headsets for everyone with Greek music and a tour guide in 7 languages. We tuned into the English and found the journey very informative. We realised the stretch of coast we were staying in was developed as an upmarket holiday resort from the 1960s which explains the hotels, apartments, tavernas, shops and harbours with magnificent boats.

We also passed a ww2 cemetery beautifully maintained with foreign, unnamed graves, many of whom are believed to have been English. This may help explain why the Greeks are welcoming to the English.

The final stretch inland to the centre of Athens is busy with traffic, horns, heat and typical city scenes of shops and cafes.

Finally we reach our destination and prepare for a trek up the acropolis. I have been many times but the sight never fails to impress. Even in the heat of the day it is worth every step. We noticed the queues to pay for tickets were much less than in July, when we last visited, but May is early summer season Greece. Kids go free which is always a bonus with triplets. Students are also free with a valid student card and OAPs have a reduced rate but again you need ID, even my 82 year old Mother in Law needed to prove she was over 65! As we climbed, the kids took in their surroundings and began to take photos and selfies, a sure sign they were secretly impressed.

Even though virtually everything has been or is being restored, it still gives a huge sense of history. Replicas of the Elgan Marbles were in place, the originals were pinched by the Brits and our in our National History Museum! Hopefully one day we might return them. The size and scale is immense and how it was originally constructed is still a mystery with the lack of machinery available. We enjoyed a good hour looking round from every angle and out at the vast sprawl of Athens below.

By the time we reached the bottom we were all in need of a drink and a rest and sort out a pretty relaxing lunch spot.

Re-fulled, we headed back towards our tour bus, but not before Clio and I were taken in by a lovely Greek making named jewellery in Greek letters. Clio and I couldn’t resist a necklace each. This is her name in Greek. 

The streets up to the acropolis are beautiful bordered with tall buildings, trees and flowers.

We sunk into our open top seats to enjoy the return journey and a late visit to the beach. Apparently site seeing isn’t so bad after all! 

Recent Events

I can’t end this post without a mention for those effected by the tragedy there earlier this week. The fires were round the coast from where we were staying and my heart goes out to all affected. Our own family are safe but so many are not, a disaster this wonderful country should never have experienced.

How Smart Glass Can Eliminate Window Coverings

Smart windows are made with a special high-tech glass that can quickly change from clear to tinted or that can selectively block heat, light or glare. Smart glass is also sometimes called dynamic glass or switchable glass.

  Eventually glass will get really smart, functioning as a computer screen with the touch of a button. But that won’t happen for 10 years or so. For now the next big thing is smart glass that replaces shades, blinds and curtains. Residential smart glass is expected to cost about twice as much as conventional glass, but it can cut heating and cooling costs, so you can theoretically recoup the added expense.

          Research on smart glass makes the promise of new technologies clear. The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in California, for example, has been working with the Institute for the Science of Materials in Spain to embed a special formulation with tin oxide nanocrystals into new smart glass. It’s complicated stuff, but the bottom line of their research is that smart glass can one day be less expensive — possibly as low as $100 per square foot — because the glass can be made at relatively low temperatures.

The result is a glass than can block heat and light independently of each other — for example, it can block the heat but let sunshine in.

Turn a dial to apply a small amount of electricity to the glass, and it will absorb infrared light, greatly reducing the heat from the sunlight coming through the glass. Turn another dial, and the glass will go dark. Both heat and light can be adjusted to your preference, each turned all the way up or down.

Researchers have formed a California startup, called Heliotrope, to further develop and market the technology.

          One of the largest makers of smart glass is a company called SageGlass, which makes electronically tintable glass, used mostly in commercial buildings so far. The company claims its smart glass enables architects to use fewer sun-control devices, which ultimately increases the amount of glass a building can have.

  SageGlass’ product works via a ceramic coating that darkens when very low-voltage electricity is applied. When the coating darkens, both light and heat are greatly reduced. The glass is typically used for windows, skylights and curtain walls.

      Another smart-glass company to watch is View, which is a startup backed by glass giant Corning. In addition to being able to change automatically based on the light coming through the window, View’s Dynamic Glass product is also controllable from either a wall switch or a smart-phone app.

  There’s no question that smart-glass technology can bring down the costs of heating and cooling, and is improving the options for controlling light and heat not with shades, blinds and curtains but with changes in the glass itself.

 The future of home windows looks very bright. Or dark. It’s up to you.

Whole Foods employees to strike tomorrow; we should also boycott

My wife, Amira, shopped at Whole Foods today and was shocked to see how cavalier the store seemed to be about social distancing and other anti-coronavirus measures. They allowed the store to be very crowded, and employees weren’t wearing face masks, gloves or other protective gear. They’re also not offering hand sanitizer for shoppers.

It appears like Whole Foods is just functioning as a willful spreader of the coronavirus.

Employees agree, apparently, and plan to strike tomorrow (they’ll call in sick) to protest their lack of protection by the company.

Instacart workers are striking today for the same reason.

Should we all boycott Whole Foods until they take action to stop using their stores to spread the coronavirus?

Is Google's artificial intelligence making you artificially stupid?

Everything from factory work to farming is being automated. But what will be the impact of automated writing tools?

Google is way ahead on this front. It’s Duplex, AI-based grammar checkers, Smart Compose and its new Recorder transcription features are doing more and more of the writing for us.

Here’s my fear. Just as digital devices have made the public less capable of physically writing with a pen or pencil (kids coming into school can barely even form letters), writing tools may degrade our ability to form coherent sentences and build large vocabularies.

The problem is that sentences and vocabularies are what we use for thinking.
