Album of the Day: Binker Golding and Elliot Galvin “Ex Nihilo” (Byrd Out)
Revisiting this sligtly slept-on album from last year that sees acclaimed young saxophonist Binker Golding, particularly famed for his duo with drummer Moses Boyd, in a duo setting with pianist Elliot Galvin, a prolific musician and composer known for his trio and solo performances and releases with the likes of Edition Records, alongside performing with Dinosaur and Emma-Jean Thackray’s Walrus.  Recorded live at Dalston’s Vortex, it was released by the fearless Byrd Out label.
What initially caught my attention on this release, was to hear two musicians who are prolific within London’s recent jazz boom, which has tended to draw more from fusion, hard bop and so-called “spiritual jazz”, veering so strongly together towards the free improvisation of elder statesmen such as Evan Parker. Though it follows Parker’s own appearances alongside Binker & Moses, and Galvin’s work with drummer Mark Sanders. The album title, “Ex Nihilo”, is Latin for “out of nothing” could well refer to how these pieces were fully improvised in the moment.
Kicking off in typical improv fashion on “Aeturnum Vale” (Goodbye Forever), Galvin’s scratchy prepared piano techniques battle with Binker’s squelching saxophone. “2ram Quod Es, Eros Quod Sum” (I was what you are, you will be what I am) takes a more atmospheric approach.  ”Ad Usum Proprium” (For Your Own Use) is the first major standout, as Binker repeats a motif throughout the piece in an astonishing feat, supposedly using circular breathing techniques, whilst Galvin’s sparing accompaniment heightens the tension.
A second highlight comes with “Aliquid Stat Pro Aliquot” (Something Stands for Something Else). An improvised conversation develops a rhythmic swing, Galvin’s repeated minimalist motif sustaining a pace under Binker’s riffing, punctuated by Galvin’s key stabbing. The record ends on a sublime high with the beautiful “Non Plus Ultra” (Peak of Perfection).  Binker’s solo introduction leads into interplay between himself and Galvin on piano. It’s understated, brooding, melancholic yet uplifting. Whilst it’s arguably the most straightforward piece on the album it is exquisite nonetheless.
For jazz fans, especially newer or younger, “Ex Nihilo” serves as an excellent introduction to the more challenging territory of improv, and will hopefully lead to a renewal and increase in live audiences for this music, where it’s vivacity and impact can be truly enjoyed. But as a recording it’s immediately more engaging than many other documents of the free or improv realm, which, lacking the live face-to-face impact, can lose some of their energy. Post lockdown, I look forward to seizing the chance to witness this special duo in the flesh, and further recordings to come.
Ex Nihilo by Binker Golding and Elliot Galvin

Gordon Elliott wants Cheltenham Gold Cup bid for Conflated | Racing News
Gordon Elliott is hoping he might get his way and persuade Michael O’Leary to run Conflated in the Boodles Cheltenham Gold Cup rather than the Ryanair Chase. O’Leary stated on Sunday he expected the surprise Irish Gold Cup winner would drop back on a trip at the Cheltenham Festival, in preference to trying him over three and a quarter miles against stablemate Galvin in the blue riband. However,…

I was shocked to see this on my Facebook feed about anything like this happening to Quinton. He's a sweet, joyful guy from my highschool and he and his mother don't deserve to be going threw something like this. Below is a copy-paste from the youcaring (I'll add a readmore when I'm on a computer). TW for mental illness and police brutality. Donate if you can, share if you can't. --- We are asking our community to help support Ayisha Elliott and Quinton Richardson-Brown with funds for Ayisha’s court fees and in her appeal regarding their case against the Eugene Police Department for Excessive Force. Please consider making a donation to help these friends and community members through this difficult time. We will be hosting a community conversation about race, justice, and mental health in the next several weeks so we can all work together to heal and consider how to support friends and community members like Quinton, Ayisha and their families when they need help most. Time/Place TBA. -Shelly Galvin The Story In February of 2014, the lives of my dear friend Ayisha and her son Quinton changed forever. Quinton sustained a severe head injury that led to his first mental health crisis later in April. During this time Quinton was hospitalized. He was peaceful, but confused and scared. On July 15, 2015, Quinton's invisible disability flared up. This time he was denied by the hospital, and sent back home. The episode got worse and Ayisha called Cahoots to help to safely transfer Quinton to the hospital as per their training. Instead, she was surprised when officers from Eugene Police Department arrived on the scene. After seeing Quinton, an officer remarked, “he’s huge.” They immediately handcuffed Quinton and in an attempt to “calm him down,” tried to taser him. This was a mental health call. Everything was escalating and going horribly wrong. Ayisha was terrified. Ayisha attempted to shield Quinton from being physically harmed after the first tasering- it was already a scary and fragile mental health crisis- by covering him with her own body and demanding the police officer leave the property. Instead the officer called for back up. When backup arrived, Quinton was tasered and punched in the face, tackled and tasered again. Ayisha was thrown to the ground by an officer outweighing her by 100 lbs with 40 additional pounds of equipment, restrained with a knee to her back and her head was slammed into the ground every time she cried out for her Quinton- her head hit the ground 3 times that she can remember. One of the officers on the scene has previously lost a case for excessive force. Ayisha was arrested and jailed for ten hours, with no news of what had happened to Quinton- she wasn’t informed of whether or not he was brought to the hospital for the help she was trying so desperately to get those many hours before. 10 hours of worry and reliving the trauma, with no news to ease her mind. Later, charges against Ayisha were dropped. Ayisha sustained a MAJOR concussion, which she is still undergoing treatment for over two years later. She suffers from sustaining nerve damage. Ayisha sued the Eugene Police Dept. for Excessive Force. It was an all white jury. The case was lost on September 29th. In Ayisha’s words “We are all in disbelief. Each of my providers stood behind me, my lawyers, coworkers and friends saw me go through this devastating path, and supported me. I am appealing this decision. I need your help. The financial loss and strain this has taken on us is enormous. However, the fight can’t be stopped due to financial strain. Truth, Awareness, Integrity, and Justice are in the balance and I need your help. I’m asking for assistance to fund raise the cost of the appeal. Please consider the awareness to Mental health, and archaic practices our police force believe they are justified in using when dealing with our family members in need. Please consider any donation to help continue the fight."

CRAWFORD: (SAT) SENS TAKE PACK IN OT
Tumblr media

BY: Bob Crawford, Hartford Wolf Pack Hartford, CT, March 30, 2019 – Chase Balisy scored with 48 seconds left in overtime Saturday night at the XL Center, to give the Belleville Senators 3-2 win over the Hartford Wolf Pack. The Wolf Pack had leads of 1-0 and 2-1, on power-play goals by Gabriel Fontaine and Tim Gettinger, but Jordan Murray tied the score on a Senator man advantage with just over five minutes remaining in the third period. “The difference maker in the game was in the second period,” Wolf Pack head coach Keith McCambridge said.  “I didn’t feel we had the puck very much, which gave them some momentum, but we got ourselves in some penalty trouble in the third.” The Wolf Pack scored on the game’s first power play for the only goal of the first period. With Joseph LaBate off for high-sticking, Fontaine scored his tenth goal of the season at 8:24.  Fontaine worked a give-and-go with Ryan Dmowski, and Fontaine moved to the middle from the left side before firing a close-in shot past Senator goaltender Marcus Hogberg (26 saves). Belleville tied the score at 5:31 of the second period, on the first goal in a Senator uniform for Austin Fyten.  A shot from the left side by Erik Burgdoerfer was blocked wide of the Wolf Pack net by Josh Wesley, but the puck caromed off the end boards to the right side, and Fyten was able to backhand it past the short side of Hartford netminder Adam Huska (31 saves). The Wolf Pack power play struck again to regain the lead, with only 45.6 seconds left in the period.  After Murray was called for delay-of-game at 19:04, Gettinger deflected a shot by Sean Day past Hogberg on the stick side. “We hadn’t seen Belleville in a long time,” said McCambridge, “so we made some adjustments to our power play on how we felt we could create some opportunities.” It was the Senators who spent much of the third frame on the power play, though, as the Wolf Pack would be shorthanded four times. Hartford killed the first three, including a two-man advantage of 1:19, after Brandon Crawley was called for cross-checking at 5:50 and Nick Jones for tripping at 6:31. Belleville finally capitalized at 14:55, though, after Fontaine was sent off for high-sticking at 13:52.  Drake Batherson fed the puck from the left-wing boards to Murray at the top of the slot, and he slung a wrist shot that went through a screen set by Vitaly Abramov and eluded Huska. “Adam’s game was strong,” McCambridge said of Huska.  “The 5-on-3 kill was really good for us. He came up with some key saves for us during the game, and that’s all you can ask your goaltender to do.” The Senators controlled the overtime session, however, outshooting the Wolf Pack 6-0.  Huska held the visitors off until former Wolf Pack Adam Tambellini deflected the rebound of a Stefan Elliott try to Balisy, and he easily buried the puck from the left side of the slot. The Wolf Pack are next in action this Wednesday night, April 3, when they travel to Springfield to take on the Thunderbirds.  Faceoff is 7:05, and all of the action can be heard live on News Radio 1410 AM, and 100.9 FM, WPOP, and online at newsradio1410.com and iHeartRadio.  Video streaming is available at theahl.com/AHLTV. The next home game for the Wolf Pack is next Saturday night, April 6, a 7:00 PM contest vs. the Utica Comets.  Tickets for all 2018-19 Wolf Pack home games are on sale now at the Agera Energy Ticket Office at the XL Center, online at hartfordwolfpack.com and by phone at (877) 522-8499.  Tickets purchased in advance for kids 12 or younger start at just $13 each, and all tickets will have a $3 day-of-game increase.
