So you've just received the bad news: your Porsche engine needs to be rebuilt—or worse, replaced. Whether you drive a Boxster, Cayman, or 911, this is a major moment in your Porsche ownership journey. Option 1: Buying a Used Porsche Engine
A used engine might seem like the most cost-effective solution at first glance. But there’s more to consider than just the sticker price.
Here’s what you must do before purchasing a used engine:

Request leak-down and compression test numbers
Inspect the sump and oil filter for debris
Check for signs of bore scoring, especially on engines known to suffer from it
