More Horizons: Looking Back at Earthworks 48 Years Later
Tumblr media
The Cell Phone Tower (30″ x 40″) by Jesse Aldana, oil painting
If you row far enough on Lake Cayuga, past Taughannock Falls State Park, you’ll see a tall white structure emitting a white smoke into the sky that is the spitting image of a lit cigarette.
It would be self-serving to suggest the smokestack is political statement, naïve to suggest it is an art installation, and misinformed to suggest it is the remainder of the famous 1969 Earthworks exhibition in Ithaca, New York.
Tumblr media
Artists from the 1969 Earthworks exhibition at Andrew Dickson White Museum of Art in Ithaca, NY
But, whether pressured by Ithaca, New York’s historical fraternity with environmentally conscious art or the nearing 48th anniversary of the earthworks exhibition held by Cornell University, I cannot help but read into the smokestack.
The connection between the smokestack, pollution, and landscape, puts up a strong argument for lasting triumph of the 60’s earthwork artists and suggests that their work nearly 50 years ago has colonized a patch of consciousness of the contemporary mind.
In reflecting on Earthworks and the current environment, contemporary artists are adapting the ecological commentary to interconnected scope of today's world. Two UGallery artists, Eric Vanasse and Jesse Aldana, propagate and transform the environmental energies of early Earthworks through their figurative oil paintings.
Tumblr media
Eric Vanasse photographed with his work
Eric Vanasse, an oil painter from Canada, paints scenes that highlight the beauty of nature with subtle undertones of its fragility. He works within the theme of environmental art. The relationship between his work and that of Earthworks is salient in the way that it ignores its anti-gallery impulse while foregrounding its ecological impulse.
Tumblr media
Tropical Flamingos (18“x 24“) by Eric Vanasse, oil painting
Earthwork's movement out-of-doors, perceived as an “anti-gallery” and “anti-museum” campaign, was inherently controversial in the art world. By using natural materials and amplifying work to an epic scale, artists flouted the confinement and commodification of traditional art forums. While this is undoubtedly bold, it corners artwork into a limited position whose controversy is difficult to sustain without shock factor.
On the other hand, the second prominent impulse behind the Earthworks seems to only have increased in relevance. The onset of the movement coincided with the ecology movement in 1960 that combated increasing eco-menaces such as litter, urban sprawl, and pollution in general and has proven to have longevity.
Eric Vanasse’s work highlights the shortcomings of the "anti-gallery" sentiment, while foregrounding the continued interest in the ecological factors.
Because a painting is an imagined ecosystem, made of paint, contained by canvas, and unbound by place, it can push into a realm of speculation and hypothesis that the real world and Earthworks' scale cannot.
Painting allows Eric to project imagined or unlikely scenes into the visual world that awakens chilling realizations about the current climate. For example, in his series, “Losing Paradise,” he creates work that centers on wild animals losing their natural environments.
Tumblr media
Losing Eden (24” x 36”) by Eric Vanasse, oil painting
In Losing Eden, he perches a polar bear on a rock distinctly outside of the arctic. The thrashing, dirty waves and angry sky tinge the painting with an impending doom. By mixing elements of realism and imagination, he simulates a vision, heightens the anxiety and uncertainty, and consequently, compels emotion.
Tumblr media
Jesse Aldana photographed with his work
Jesse often portrays stark oppositions throughout his paintings such as sky and street, concrete and air, and building and clouds. These junctures between the natural world and the manmade world are a reminder of mankind’s chilling grip on the landscape, and vise versa.
Tumblr media
The Beverly Hilton (30″ x 40″) by Jesse Aldana, oil painting
Jesse often portrays stark oppositions throughout his paintings such as sky and street, concrete and air, and building and clouds. These junctures between the natural world and the manmade world are a reminder of mankind’s chilling grip on the landscape, and vise versa.
While the work of these artists diverges from earthworks in its relationship to medium and site, they imbue the theme of ecology with a multiplicity of perspective, vision, and potential.
These new perspectives suggest that when a work of art is so inextricably bound to its place, it is profoundly limited to its own situation. So as these ecological statements translate into a post-earthworks world, the most innovative aspect of Earthworks in the 1960s becomes its most limiting aspect in 2017.
Tumblr media
Carson Refinery (30″ x 40″) by Jesse Aldana, oil painting
By innovating with sight, rather than site, artists such as Eric Vanasse and Jesse Aldana, guide viewers to a visual agility and elastic perspective. Their freedom as painters can present different versions of the world that break beyond one rock face, or lakeside horizon line, or city in upstate New York.

anybody wanna read the plot synopsis for my proposed Frankenstein adaptation for Uni? you can do so below the cut, yo
Cutler, on the North-East Coast of the US and close to the Canadian border, is a small, quiet fishing village. Or at least, it was, until one day somebody finds a body washed up on the shore. The local police department treats it as an open-and-shut case: The victim, most likely a fisher from Canada, slipped on his boat, hit his head and, probably as a cause of his head injury, tripped a second time and went overboard, where he drowned and the current then dragged him towards the coast. But to Lieutenant Sarah Greenhouse (Karine Vanasse), a young member of the local Cutler Police Department eager to prove herself to her superiors, some things about the case don’t add up. The victim showed bruises on the arms and the neck – a sign to the Lieutenant for a struggle. She begins to investigate the case further and finds out that the victim in fact wasn’t a small fisher, but a crew member on an exploring ship, with a direct route between Canada and Greenland.
Things get strange when an anthropologist (Sam Spruell) by the name of Robert Walton shows up in Cutler, claiming to know who killed the sailor, but not where to find the actual murderer. Walton’s story of young Victor Frankenstein (Owen Roth) and his creation (Aldan Adair), a seemingly life-like android, who has made it his life’s purpose to make the life of his creator a living hell, brings the FBI into the scene, specifically Agent Christopher Johnson (Eric Hicks). Cutler P.D. is ordered to stand down and let the FBI handle the case.
Neither Walton nor Greenhouse are willing to let the case go, so when a now older Victor (Stephen Huszar) shows up in Nova Scotia, the Lieutenant and the anthropologist race against time to get to Victor before the FBI and, hopefully, find the Creature as well. While Greenhouse risks her career to prove Victor’s innocence in the murder of the sailor, the public finds out about Frankenstein and what he did. Switzerland demands for his extradition, while the US-American government insists that he should stand trial in one of their own courthouses, as well as be brought before a scientific committee. Walton, Greenhouse and Frankenstein find themselves in the middle of a manhunt for a crime Victor didn’t commit. And then there’s also the Creature, who is single-mindedly on his path to Victor’s destruction.

‘Anne with an E,’ ‘Cardinal’ lead Canadian Screen Awards with 7 wins each

TORONTO — TV dramas and debut features by women scored big at Sunday’s Canadian Screen Awards as the hostless show moved along at a brisk pace with comedy bits from some of the country’s biggest stars.
The CBC series Anne with an E and CTV detective drama Cardinal: Blackfly Season won two awards each during the CBC broadcast from Toronto’s Sony Centre of Performing Arts, putting them atop the TV pack with a total of seven trophies apiece after a week of galas.
Anne with an E, which is inspired by Lucy Maud Montgomery’s classic novel “Anne of Green Gables,” won best drama series and an acting nod for lead actress Amybeth McNulty. That added to five trophies acquired on Wednesday for a season that expanded upon the source material to include more diverse characters.
McNulty, 17, used her acceptance speech to encourage “every young person out there who doubts their voice, their mind, their power.”
“We are strong, capable and willing to fight for our world,” she said.
Meanwhile, Cardinal took top acting nods for stars Billy Campbell and Karine Vanasse during the show, adding to its five trophies from Wednesday.
In a tearful speech, Virginia-born Campbell thanked Vanasse and the local cast and crew of northern Ontario, where the show is filmed.
“I’m a Yank and I’m particularly grateful for Canada being Canada these days,” he said.
Best comedy series went to Schitt’s Creek, resulting in a total of four awards for the week, including an acting nod for Catherine O’Hara’s portrayal of eccentric matriarch Moira.
“In Schitt’s Creek we are writing a world that examines the transformational effects of love when the threat of hate and intolerance has been removed from the equation,” said co-creator and showrunner Daniel Levy.
“And while that’s not a reality for many, our goal is to shine a light out there that asks the question, ‘What if it was? Wouldn’t we all be happier if we were able to love out loud?”‘
The CBC riches-to-rags show, which recently announced its next season will be its last, had tied with Anne with an E with a leading 15 Canadian Screen Award nominations going into this year’s ceremonies.
On the film side, best picture went to Genevieve Dulude-De Celles’ debut feature, the Quebec coming-of-age drama A Colony. It got three awards in total, including best first feature and best actress for Emilie Bierre’s portrayal of an insecure high school student who bonds with an Indigenous boy.
“This is a dream, guys,” said Bierre, 14, noting she’s been acting since she was five.
Barrie, Ont.-raised Jasmin Mozaffari won best director for her critically acclaimed debut feature, Firecrackers, about two young women longing to escape their small town. The Ontario-shot drama also won an editing award earlier in the day.
“Really did not expect to win this, honest to God,” Mozaffari said onstage, noting it was “a micro-budget” feature that she made “especially for women about living in a patriarchal world.
“I think I’m one of the few women to win this award. I don’t think I’ll be the last.”
Overall, the leading film winner was Maxime Giroux’s allegorical drama The Great Darkened Days with five awards, including best cinematography for Sara Mishara and best supporting actress for Sarah Gadon. Martin Dubreuil stars in the surreal wartime story as a Quebecois draft dodger and Charlie Chaplin impersonator in the American West.
It was also a big night for Crave’s small-town sitcom Letterkenny, which walked away with a nod for writing and one for acting for creator Jared Keeso, bringing its grand award total to five for the week.
Other top acting nods went to Kim Coates for the City mafia series Bad Blood and Theodore Pellerin for the crime drama film Family First.
The Cogeco Fund Audience Choice Award went to actress Dominique Provost-Chalkley of the supernatural Western horror series Wynonna Earp.
The show on CBC and its Gem streaming service capped off a week of ceremonies in which the bulk of the trophies were handed out.
The Academy of Canadian Cinema & Television administers the awards, which honour Canadian talent in film, television and digital media in 135 categories.
Organizers chose not to have a host this year in a bid to experiment with the awards-show format.
The broadcast kicked off in quippy Canuck style, with a skit on homegrown celebrities involving the cast of “Baroness von Sketch Show,” singer Jann Arden and actor Jerry O’Connell.
Comedy star Mary Walsh received the Earle Grey Award for her body of work, while Deepa Mehta got the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Will & Grace star Eric McCormack presented the Kids in the Hall comedy troupe with the Academy Icon Award, and actor Stephan James received the inaugural Radius Award, which goes to a Canadian making waves globally.
“When I was coming up in Scarborough with my brother, we hadn’t seen too many black actors who were doing incredible things abroad … people who had come from Toronto and Canada,” James said backstage.
“We’ve always wanted that, we’ve always yearned for that, and to look around and realize that you may be that person for some young girl or some young boy, it’s an incredible feeling.”
