#Evan's cat: cubby

once again thinking about Evan’s cat Cubby. Cubby violently hating Mike, and then Evan dies. And Cubby will stay in Evan's room, grieving him and wondering when Evan will come back. And Mike will slink into Evan’s room, grieving that Ev will never play with his toys again or sleep in his bed and knowing it's all his fault and wishing it wasn't.

And for a long time Cubby will scratch Mike if he gets too close while they're both in Evan’s room (Mike always lets it happen because he thinks he doesn't deserve to be in Ev's room, but can't stop going in anyway), or Cubby will leave the room entirely.

William tries locking Evan’s bedroom door to keep them both out. When Cubby won't stop scratching at Evan’s bedroom door begging to be let in, Will tries killing the cat.

Mike just barely manages to save Cubby by opening a window or door and letting her get out.

Mike cries when she leaves. Another piece of Evan, gone.

When she comes back, Mike has to ask one of the friends he hasn't talked to in months to take care of her so William won't kill her.

One day when Mike was laying in Evan’s cold, empty bed, sobbing his eyes out, Cubby jumped up on the bed. Mike didn't even notice until Cubby curled up next to him.

Cubby is lonely and sad, too, and Mike's the only one around.

After a good long while of laying curled up next to each other on Evan's bed, Cubby starts licking at Mike's arms.

Mike cries harder.

Mike apologizes to Cubby for what happened over and over and over, in the way he wishes he could but cannot apologize to his brother for what happened.

Love & Other Detours by Jenna Evans Welch

One of my closest friends gave me her copy of Love & Other Detours to read over Christmas break. This book ended up being the first one I read in 2023.

Love & Gelato Review

I enjoyed this book. Was it the best book I ever read ? no. will it be in my top ten books of 2023 ? only if I read ten books. it wasn't a bad or even ok book by any means I liked it and it was a fun read. I would recommend it as a teenage beach read. I preferred Love & Luck but the relationship between Lina and Howard was so heart warming. The found family trope between a father and daughter figure was so lovely.

Ian is a music journalist i LOVE

as you can see I am very eloquent in my text exchanges. But Love & Luck felt more relatable to me personally. I love journalism and want to pursue it in college so seeing another person my age pursuing a similar dream to mine was so fun. Ian and Addie's relationship was so incredibly similar to the relationship I have with my younger sisters (yes I have brothers but they are 4 and 6 so we haven't spent much time together). If I discover that Jenna is an only child then we should give her an award for portraying sibling relationships so accurately. I think road trip stories hold a special place in my heart because pack-up-and-go is my favorite way of life.

Love & Olives Pre-review

I haven't read the third book yet but while talking to my friend she gave me a gist and I decided there are so many ways to fix a book that again I haven't read. Here is our text convo:

004. what is there to say about the US that hasn’t already been said? so we’ll skip that and talk about how the city I live in, Portland, is the hipster capital of the nation. we put birds on everything, if you’ve ever seen Portlandia it’s not even a joke anymore that’s exactly what it’s like here, people will queue for hours in the rain just to get some doughnuts, and the public transit in the city is great but in the suburbs I think they personally hate me because they never run to time. vegan/vegetarian restaurants are plentiful, there are actually trees everywhere, and while I gripe about it to plenty of people, it’s actually a pretty good city to live in.

005.  favourite color: dark red, although really it’s a tie with like 4 other colors / fruit: mango / season: fall/autumn

006. favourite books + writer whose writing style you admire the most: Hunchback of Notre Dame, Frankenstein, Dracula, Dante’s Divine Comedy, Lord of the Rings... basically classics for days. I love Tolkien’s writing, but more his world building. That world building game thooo.

007. what kinda music do you listen to + any fave bands / musicians: mostly classical/instrumental, but I love a lot of different genres. pop, punk, rock, metal, jazz, honestly just about anything. my fave bands are probably Panic! At the Disco and Imagine Dragons, love me some Lady Gaga... seriously I could just keep going.

008. what are you doing for a living / what are you studying?: I studied theater in college, hoping to act professionally. sadly, almost a year ago I got hit with a major illness and had to leave work, so I’ve been unemployed, but I’m trying to get back on my feet. 👍

009. what’s your dream occupation?: acting fo sho, especially if I can move away from theater and do film. I’d also love to be a full-time writer/novelist and artist.

010. relationship status: single 5eva

011. coffee, tea or hot chocolate?: all of them, but I basically run on coffee so mostly that.

012. dream holiday destination?: I’d actually love to do a tour of Europe at some point, that would be so cool.

013. the thing you’re most proud about yourself: I did a year of study abroad in England my 3rd year of uni, and was alone with no one else from my school for half that time. it was a big adjustment but it was also the best year of my life.

014. tell us a bit about your family!: they’re wild. I’m the baby of the family by 15+ years (big accident). I have siblings but I basically grew up an only child? so that’s been interesting lol. my sisters both have kids who are now in their teens and it’s bizarre for me. my dad and my stepmom are pretty crunchy-granola people but they’re awesome and very supportive.

015. how long have you known your closest friend?: good grief it’s been like... 5 years? almost 6? if you’re only counting how long we’ve actually been friends. the first time we met was like 7-8 years ago, but we didn’t spend a lot of time together until we were roommates senior year of college. and then we just became inseparable. she’s my platonic soulmate. <3

016. superpower you’d like to have?: flying for sure, it would make the fact that I can’t drive to save my life a lot more bearable XD

017. celebrity you’d like to meet?: basically anyone from the MCU, especially Chis Evans, he seems like an awesome human being.

018. guilty pleasures: I don’t really have any anymore, at some point I just stopped caring if other people thought the stuff I liked was weird. I suppose I do feel a little guilty that even though my Netflix watch list is full of stuff I’ve never seen, I just keep rewatching The Good Place over and over lol.

019. pet peeves: chewing with your mouth open drives me insane in like less than 2 seconds. anything repetitive. you know how on mac computers the icons at the bottom of the screen will jump repeatedly? that makes me see red, idk why exactly it just does.

020. do you have any hobbies?: video gaming and writing are the big ones these days. I hate how adult life makes it hard to focus on reading, but I’m hoping I can pick that up again.

021. where would you like to live in the future?: a big house in the highlands of scotland, far away from all the nearest neighbors, with a room dedicated to a custom pipe organ that I’ll just play randomly at 3am so people in the closest village awaken to Phantom of the Opera in the cold night and wonder what the hell is happening. #liveyourextralife lmao

022. tell us a story about a thing that recently happened to you!: I think I mentioned this, but I was getting ready to leave the house on Christmas and fell down the stairs. my foot just went right out from under me and I landed hard on my butt. the bruise was the size of a hand and super dark for days. also ended up breaking a little cubby our cats like to hide in. so that was fun XD

Mermaid Beach Residence, Australia, by B.E. Architecture

The living room of Mermaid Beach Residence in Queensland's Gold Coast region is a study in clever material use, with its concrete surfaces and timber flooring.

The monolithic built-in wooden shelving that fills one wall creates a decorative grid-effect on top of the concrete. It rests on a stone slab above wooden storage units at floor level.

Artist's studio, Russia, by Ruetemple

Architecture studio Ruetemple looked to "drawing and architecture" when designing this artist's studio in Moscow, which is dominated by a large plywood partition that incorporates both furniture and shelving.

As well as separating the lounge area from a workspace, the partition works as both storage space and furniture. It has a built-in sofa, shelving, and a set of steps that lead up to a suspended sleeping platform.

Spear Building Loft, US, by Ravi Raj and Evan Watts

This former factory in New York was renovated to create a bright, open living space. In the living room, simple built-in shelves were painted in a creamy pastel-yellow hue that harmonises with the white storage units and the fireplace.

Rather than building the shelves into a separate wall panel, they have been attached to the white wall on one side, which creates an airy feel and helps open up the room.

Sierra Negra, Mexico, by Hemaa

Two built-in shelves with wooden panelling serve a decorative function in this Mexico City living room, which has matching wooden floorboards and wood-clad walls.

Its minimalist interior and simple colour palette, which blends beige, brown and grey hues, means the books in the shelves stand out as a splash of colour. The shelves also hold speakers and picture frames, helping to keep the rest of the room free from clutter.

Sausalito Outlook, USA, by Feldman Architecture

In the living room of this hillside home in Sausalito, California, Feldman Architecture added plenty of storage space for the owners' book collection, while the white panelling in the middle hides the TV from sight.

The walls and kitchen space next to the storage wall have been painted a matching glossy white, complemented by more natural hues such as a beige rug and brown Ligne Roset Togo seating.

Mayfair apartment, UK, by MWAI

In small apartments, built-in shelving can be the perfect space-saving solution. For MWAI's design of a 37-square-metre home in London's Mayfair area, it covered one wall of the open-plan kitchen and living area in a pale-wood storage unit that also includes a desk.

Colours were kept neutral to reinforce the studio's idea to look at the design as that of a hotel room where "all functions are carefully and discreetly planned to provide a functional response."

Kew Residence, Australia, by John Wardle

Architect John Wardle renovated his own Kew Residence home to make its wood-lined first-floor study the focal point of the house. Built-in shelves hold books and bric-a-brac on one side of the room and the architect's art collection on another.

Neutral wood colours were used for the shelves and the built-in reading nook in the room, where the architect said he spends "just about all his daylight hours."

House for Booklovers and Cats, USA, by BFDO Architects

The built-in storage in this colourful home lives up to the project name – it doesn't just have space for books and art, but also for the owners' two cats to hide away from visitors.

The custom-made shelf has dozens of cubby holes while projecting shelves form a staircase for the cats to ascend to the ledge at the top, where they can sit and observe the goings-on below.

The Hide Out, US, by Dan Brunn Architecture

Dan Brunn Architecture renovated The Hide Out, which was originally designed by Frank Gehry in the 1970s, to pay homage to its initial simple material palette.

In this living room and bedroom overlooking a meditation garden, the lush walnut seating nook is complemented by a built-in white bookshelf that also hides a fold-out bed.

Fin House, UK, by RA Projects

The blue steel staircase in the middle of the living space in this home designed for fashion designer Roksanda Ilincic was designed to look "like a sculpture in a gallery."

As well as a staircase, the piece functions as a shelving system with multiple shelves in different sizes. Its back wall is broken up rather than solid, which lets light pass through and stops the colourful piece from feeling too solid.

You can see a caterpillar toy in Evan's fnaf 4 room and i just KNOW it's the kind with wheels and a string that you're meant to tug around the house with you, and he uses it to play with his cat Cubby bc she'll chase after the caterpillar as it trails behind him while he's running all over the house

i was gonna make a post about whether Cubby would be scared of Mike when he's a rotting corpse after being scooped. Then i realized this means Cubby would have been left alone with Ennard.

cubby is prob one of those strays who comes up to you and meows pitifully and insistently and rubs against your ankles and tries climbing up ur legs and begs to be pet and held tbh. That's how Evan found cubby.

Mike and Cubby never liked each other very much, and then Evan dies and they both miss him so very much and they literally both do not have anyone else they can get comfort from. They spend months sneaking into Evan’s room and always avoiding the other when they find the other in there too. Then Mike is crying on Evan’s bed and Cubby slowly curls up beside him and Mike starts crying harder. Mike apologizes to Cubby for everything because he knows he can never apologize to Evan or make up for what he did. Mike has to protect Cubby all the times that William tries getting rid of her after Evan dies. Mike grows up and he keeps Evan's cat safe the way he never kept Evan safe.
