How To Be an Explorer of the World, Exploration #16
“Survey: Create a simple survey of at least five questions. Give it to a sampling of people. Document the answers in a way that is interesting and readable (for instance, as a graph, spreadsheet, or pictogram)” (Keri Smith).
My survey, as shared on Instagram and Facebook:
Describe yourself in only three words (or pictures or dance moves).
What's your favorite quirk about yourself?
What do you wish more people understood (and / or appreciated) about you?
What's something that delights you lately?
What's something that worries you lately?
* Bonus: Tell me a secret.
And a few more responses that came in after the fact:
Describe yourself in only 3 words.- Creative, dramatic, caring
What is your favorite quirk about yourself?- My odd sense of humor. I feel like people either think I’m strange or hilarious…and honestly I’m fine either way! haha
What do you wish people understood and/or appreciated about you?- I wish people could understand how much I genuinely care.
What’s something that delights you lately- Going on frequent night walks to clear my mind.
What’s something that worries you lately?- I know it’s cliché but I’m worried about my future. There is so much uncertainty and it keeps me up at night.
And:
Stubborn or passionate, kind and genuine.
I always try to see people in the best light possible. I'm not always perfect at it. Sometimes preconceived notions happen.
I wish people would understand that I mean well. Sometimes I do something that might feel a bit awkward. Or they read what I'm doing as bad to only shortly realize I was just helping.
Work is finally going somewhere good. Possibly career good.
The state of the world worry's me.

How To Be an Explorer of the World, Exploration #15
“Cosumer: Record everything you consume or everything you purchase in one day / week.” - Keri Smith
Source: Kate Bingaman - Burt
I chose to track everything I consumed in a day. I defined consuming as anything the body takes on (soaps, lotions, etc) or in (food, beverage) and chose not include use of disposable materials.

“FIFTY THINGS. Write down (or document) fifty things about one of the following: a trip to the library, a trip to the grocery store, a walk in your neighborhood.” - Keri Smith

“Collect multiples of one thing (such as leaves, stones, shells, seeds, etc.). Lay them out in front of you. Observe them in detail. [...] List the differences you see. Try to document at least twenty-five things.” - Keri Smith
Not 25. But something.
Coins, Noted Differences: Heft, shape, size, thickness, material, value (sentimental / economical / collectable), font, color, image, use, relevance, monetary system, language, year, wear, nicks, sound, personal connection, appeal, origin, history.

“Instant Sculpture: Consider that everything around is a source for sculpture. Try making quick pieces using whatever you have around you in the moment” (Keri Smith).
Tried to create my way out of a depressed mood. Spoiler alert: It didn’t work. Both the creation part and the crawling out of a bad mood. I think it’s safe to say I botched this exploration. Might revisit later.

"Sit in a location for one hour. Document all the sounds you can hear and the times you heard them. Mark the approximate location of the sounds in relation to you."
Full confession: I was about ten minutes shy of a full hour.

“Map out pavement cracks in your neighborhood.”
Honestly? Pavement cracks hold no interest for me. So I mapped out the lines on my palm instead. Palm readers, enjoy.

“Collect objects only on your way to work every day. (Try to collect thirty.)”
Ongoing exploration, modified to include objects collected on walks in general. Featuring finds within the past two weeks or so. To be continued throughout the year.

“One thing: Choose an everyday object. This can be something you find on the street or something you have. Look the top half of the object for fifteen minutes. Record everything you see there in detail. Then do the same for the bottom half. The longer you look the more you will see” (Keri Smith).
I was surprised at how much of an affect this exercise had on me. I spent fifteen minutes studying a vase of daffodils (there wasn’t really a top or a bottom half to it). Those minutes felt like reverie, like mediation, like prayer. Not a moment I wanted to rush away from.

Alphabet typography hunt. Downtown. 7.1.20. Lighting is poor and the cropping is awkward. The perfectionist in me wants to tackle the project fresh. But you know what, this was a really enjoyable night, out with someone who’s company I love, using a camera I haven’t for some time. So for now, I’ll take the flaws and imperfections because they remind me how good life is.

“Start a collection based on the first found object you see on your walk, whatever that is. You decide what the connection between the objects is (can be based on shape, color, size, etc.).”
Started with a basketball hoop. And because I was lacking in creative energy, moved on to other things that begin with “b.”
Needing a little boost in creative energy.
But for now: bible / bucket / blade / books / burner / banister / buttresses / blinds
