It Happened One Night: Chapter 2
The country house Mycroft had introduced them to was a little smaller than the nobles’ mansions they’d been to thus far, but it was an elegant villa, one which exuded a sense of history.
Its exterior was built in the Gothic style, with stone foundations. Planted in the vast gardens was a sea of flora in exquisite colour schemes, delighting the eye of any onlooker. [1]
Of course, the interior didn’t disappoint either: it was richly decorated, with intricately crafted furniture in every room; and hanging from the walls were portraits of the mansion’s owners, as well as landscapes painted by renowned artists. As Sherlock and company were here as guests, they were restricted in the number of rooms allowed for use, but the sheer number of luxury items that greeted them was still far greater than what any ordinary person could ever hope to obtain.
Their lives had literally been turned around.
Turned around…… and yet.
“——Booored……”
In the room he had picked himself, Sherlock looked out the window, gazing at the tranquil garden flooded with gentle sunlight.
It had been three days since they’d moved in, and Sherlock had already grown weary of this lavish lifestyle.
He only took care of the plants in the garden insomuch that they wouldn’t wither, but otherwise he had no interest in the flowers themselves. Moreover, he had already tired of gazing upon the decorations and furniture and paintings in the house. The underground wine cellar aroused some interest, but as an invited guest, helping himself to the liquor as he pleased was evidently a breach of etiquette.
In the end, there wasn’t much to do in this mansion.
As John had suggested, requests from clients were reaching him by mail in the meantime, but they had all been simple cases, solvable just by reading the letters. Couldn’t one difficult case come in sometime? Sherlock sighed heavily as he wrote down the solutions in his replies.
His boredom was plain as day. John, who was seated across him, spoke up in a soft voice.
“Sherlock. We just got tangled up in a big incident a while back, so isn’t it a good thing to take a break for once?”
“Y’know, John, just one day of rest is enough for me. If I don’t get the right level of stimulation, my brain will get all mouldy.”
“What an absurd……”
Just then, the door opened.
“Sherlock, John-kun, I’ve made some tea.”
Miss Hudson walked in bearing a silver tray. On top of it were some nicely baked biscuits, and black tea in teacups with simple designs. As they’d been given permission to use the kitchens, she had been devoting her spare time to baking.
“Thank you, Miss Hudson.”
“Thanks—”
The two of them each took a biscuit from the tray on the table, and munched on it.
“How is it? I’m quite proud of them myself,” she asked.
John nodded in satisfaction.
“It’s very delicious. Right, Sherlock?”
“Oh, it’s good, yeah,” he replied, deadpan.
Miss Hudson shook her head sadly.
“……Well now. If you’re this bored, why don’t you head down to one of the nearby villages? Seeing as there’s such fine weather too.”
Sherlock sent his gaze out the window yet again.
“That’s true……. And if an interesting case pops up, it would be just my luck.”
“Don’t say something so troubling — we’ve worked hard for this peace and quiet.”
John was familiar with Sherlock’s character, but this level of addiction to his work was nothing short of astounding. Miss Hudson, clearly worried by the detective’s words, placed a hand on John’s shoulder.
“John-kun, with Sherlock in this state, I’m worried he’ll get up to no good. Just in case, could you tag along with him?”
“Certainly; leave it to me. It’ll also be a perfect opportunity to get some exercise.”
“What’re you both taking me for……?” Sherlock grumbled — he’d been half-joking, and was surprised to find his words being taken seriously.
Then, with Miss Hudson taking care of the house, the two men set off.
✦ ✦ ✦ ✦
The Cotswolds was a region 200 kilometres west of London, renowned for its rustic charm, with its rolling hills carpeted in verdant grass.
From where they were, they could see flocks of white sheep and tiny villages dotting the vast green landscape. The village buildings were constructed from limestone: in the northeast of the Cotswolds, it was the colour of honey; in the central region, it was golden-yellow; in the southwest, it turned white instead.
Walking along a path which cut through some pastures, Sherlock and John arrived at the village nearest to the mansion.
A small stream meandered through the village, and built along it was a series of stone houses. It looked right out of a picture book.
Their hearts healed by the idyllic scene before them, the two men headed to the centre of the village, in a bid to find some boredom-busting information. There, they found a two-storey inn. When he noticed that a section of the first floor had been converted into a pub, Sherlock broke into a grin.
“Oi, John. Let’s have a pint to pass the time.”
John shot him a dubious look.
“Sherlock. Drinking during the day isn’t something I approve of.”
“It’ll be fine. It’s been a long time since we’ve had a vacation anyway — why not let loose for a bit?”
“And who was it who said he’d had enough of resting just now……?”
This was a fine example of what it meant to do an about-turn.
But it wasn’t the first time Sherlock had done something on a whim. John reluctantly followed him into the inn.
As expected for a country pub in the daytime, there were only a handful of customers seated quietly inside — it was nothing like the bustle of the city. At the counter was a tall man, who looked like he was running the business alone.
The two men sat at the bar. Sherlock ordered beer, while John chose some light snacks. As their orders were served up, Sherlock took a swig, then directed a question to the owner.
“Hey. Isn’t there anything interesting going on around here?”
At this vague question, the pub owner rubbed his chin.
“Anything interesting, huh. Well there is, but it’s a family matter. Are you two tourists?”
John spoke up. “No, it’s complicated…… For various reasons, we’re staying in the residence of a nearby landowner for the time being.”
“Hmm, so you’re a close friend of this noble?”
“That’s not it either…… This man here is the detective Sherlock Holmes, and I’m his assistant.”
“Ah, I’ve heard of you. So you’re that Holmes. Must’ve been tough comin’ all the way out here.”
It seemed he had little interest in celebrities: hearing Sherlock’s name didn’t stir up much of a reaction.
Sherlock stared into his beer glass.
“By the way, you said something just now about a ‘family matter’?”
It seemed he had remembered what the owner said earlier, about there being something interesting. Then, the owner’s voice turned slightly cheery.
“Actually, my daughter’s in London now, and she’s getting married. She’s bringing her fiancé here the evening after tomorrow. I’ve met him just once before, but he’s a solid chap. I was kinda worried she’d get on with some weird fellow, so I’m relieved.”
“Congratulations — you must be proud.”
At John’s words, the owner rubbed the back of his head in embarrassment.
“Thanks. I’m also planning a wedding celebration that night, with some friends from the nearby villages.”
Sherlock hummed in reply. It wasn’t clear if he was interested or not.
“But the second floor is used as an inn, right? Wouldn’t the noise invite complaints?”
“Not to worry: there’s only one person staying upstairs now, and I’ve already gotten his agreement. Anyway, it’s pretty rare for outsiders to come to a small village like this. I still run the inn for formality’s sake, but most of my income comes from this pub.”
“But there is one person here.”
“Yeah, a guy who just arrived a while ago. It seems he’s an obscure painter; he said he wanted a quiet place to concentrate on his art and stimulate his creativity, so he’s rented a room for around ten days.”
That number startled John.
“That’s quite a long stay.”
“The rooms are all empty anyway, so I don’t mind at all. Also, instead of an atelier, well…… can you see it from here?”
The owner pointed at something beyond the window. A little ways from the inn, at the end of a patch of exposed, blackened earth, stood a small shed.
When the two men caught sight of the shed and nodded, the pub owner continued.
“It was originally a stable, but got remodelled into a storage shed. This guy said it was easy to concentrate there, so he moved lots of bulky luggage into the shed via carriage, and now he spends most of his day cooped up inside.”
“Something seems off. What happened to his original belongings?”
“There weren’t many to begin with, so now they’ve been moved to an empty room on the second floor. The others in the village don’t really like him, but he pays his bills on time, so I’ve nothing to say to that. And there weren’t many things in the shed in the first place, so he’s not causing me any trouble.”
Just as the owner finished speaking, the shed door opened, and they saw a man walk out alone.
Sherlock spoke up.
“Is, that the artist?”
“Yeah, his name is Rheos. I think he’s from around France.” [2]
Rheos was a pale, lanky young man dressed in awfully shabby clothes: he truly looked like an artist detached from reality. His shoulder-length hair hid most of his features, but his quick steps revealed the strength in his legs. He was carrying a large, dirty case under his arm.
“…………”
Sherlock stared with inscrutable eyes as he tried to figure out where Rheos was going, but quickly turned back to the barkeep.
“So, is he using this place as a base, and travelling around the area to paint landscapes?”
The owner shook his head.
“I thought so too at first, but apparently he practises by referencing works from famous artists.”
“Hmm, you said earlier that he always coops himself up in that shed. I thought he’d go out during the day if he’s painting scenery.”
“He’s an odd one, that’s for sure. But anyway, I’m the one who took him in, and he hasn’t caused any problems so far. I say it’s up to him where and how he wants to paint. ——By the way, Mr Detective—”
He leaned over to Sherlock a little.
“What is it?”
“From your detective work, I’m sure you’ve seen many strange cases, now haven’t you? If you’re willing, why not tell us about one or two at the dinner party?”
The owner broke into a wide grin, but on the contrary, Sherlock’s face twitched. To be honest, it was simply awkward to attend a complete stranger’s wedding party. Hence he decided to gently turn down the offer.
“……Umm, thank you for the invitation, but——”
“——Hmm? How about it? It’s my precious daughter’s wedding, y’know. I’ll do anything to make things even a little more exciting.”
However, contrary to his expectations, the pub owner seemed adamant that Sherlock regale the guests with stories from his detective work. The strength of his insistence had flustered Sherlock for a moment, but eventually, he clapped his partner’s shoulder beside him.
“In that case, John here can go. After all, he’s witnessed many of the strange things I’ve encountered up close.”
“Huh? What’re you saying, Sherlock!?”
Realising that he was being offered up instead, John panicked. As much as he wanted to congratulate the happy couple on their marriage, he didn’t want to be sent out to speak before a whole bunch of strangers.
“You’re always complaining about this and that — only now do you appreciate me? It’s not fair!”
“No need to be humble. I can personally guarantee your ability as a storyteller.”
“No, hold on just a——”
“——Oh, so you’ll be speaking in place of him, eh?”
Unfortunately for John, the owner had now set his sights on him.
“U-Uh, I……”
John put both hands before him in an effort to convey that he wouldn’t be joining the party, but in the face of the pub owner’s blinding smile, he realised all resistance would only be futile.
“Alright. I shall attend……”
“Thank you. As a further token of my thanks, have some slightly more expensive beer on the house.”
Now in a great mood, the owner took two bottles of beer from the shelves behind him.
Having been forced into speaking in public about their cases — a fine mess indeed — John was downright depressed. Sherlock patted him on the shoulder.
“Sorry. If I were to talk instead, it would just sound like I’m bragging. Do you want to get some practice in while you can?” suggested Sherlock, with a half-smile.
“You’re enjoying this, aren’t you?”
John shot him a reproachful glare.
Footnotes:
[1] To give you a sense of how the house might look like, here are some examples of Victorian Gothic houses: The Guardian
[2] Rheos (pronounced ray-oh-s) is honestly my best guess at his name… (In the book it’s written as レオス). Rheos is also a real name!

The $21 Million Achille Salvagni-Designed Miami Beach Mansion
It’s no stretch to picture Don Johnson, playing his Sonny Crockett character in Miami Vice, all white linen suit and turquoise tee, lounging by the pool of this spectacular Miami Beach mini-mansion. Or climbing the home’s majestic bronze-finished staircase to kick back on the mezzanine floor’s soft-pink sofa, gazing out over the palm-fringed waterfront. It’s definitely camera-ready.
The credit for this sleek, retro-cool architectural jewel, just a short speed boat ride to downtown Miami, goes to acclaimed Italian genius Achille Salvagni. The Rome-based 50-year-old is well known for his designs for super-luxury homes and yachts, together with his exquisite, bespoke furniture and lighting creations.
According to listing agent Oren Alexander of Douglas Elliman, Salvagni was commissioned by an overseas client to design both the exterior and interior of the home. With the Covid-19 pandemic restricting travel, coupled with the booming market for upscale homes in Miami Beach, the owner has decided to sell. The asking price: a cool $21 million.
Completed just weeks ago, this almost 8,000-square-foot, gleaming white residence is squeezed onto a third-of-an-acre lot on Lakeview Drive, in the less frenetic west side of fun-loving Miami Beach.
Boaters will love the 110 feet of waterfront on the Surprise inlet from Biscayne Bay that leads into Surprise Lake. But forget about docking your superyacht here; fixed, low bridges restrict access to smaller vessels. Sonny Crockett’s 38-foot Scarab however, would fit just fine.
Salvagni designed the exterior of the two-story home with curvilinear walls, towering floor-to-ceiling windows and sweeping roof lines. Dark wood accents on the entryway contrast with the stark white paint and white pavers.
Sliding steel gates lead from quiet Lakeview Drive into a small motorcourt and entrance to the house. A grand foyer opens to a double-height living room and dining room with views out to the pool.
Throughout the home, the furniture is all bespoke from the Achille Salvagni Atelier Collection—he has studios in New York, London and Rome—and includes some truly exquisite items. Add to these a number of curated antique pieces from his native Italy.
The kitchen enters the realm of museum quality with custom cabinetry detailed in 24-karat gold leaf, a surfboard-like island and glossy Belgium Black marble flooring. The appliances are all high-end Wolf and Sub-Zero.
In the living room, it’s hard to miss the quartet of funky, retro-style yellow armchairs, the shiny blue lacquer column and an additional grouping of curvy sofas and armchairs.
And pre-empting the inevitable question; yes, every stick of furniture (even those designed by Salvagni), every piece of art, and every light fixture in the home can be included in the sale for an additional $1.2 million over the asking price.
Climb that bronze staircase to the second level and here you’ll find the expansive primary suite with its private deck overlooking the pool, a spacious bathroom, custom walk-in closets and desk area.
Four additional bedrooms reside on this floor, along with an open seating area featuring those funky pink chairs and sofa. Back down on the first floor are two more bedrooms, a yoga room, steam room and access to the garage.
Huge sliding glass doors open from the living area out to the white limestone terrace and 90-foot infinity pool. Here there’s also a cabana with outdoor kitchen.
But don’t expect breathtaking water views from the deck; the home sits on a narrow stretch of canal and looks straight into the far-from-attractive Ritz-Carlton Residences condo building. Hence the multitude of palm trees and shrubbery by the water’s edge to provide some privacy.
Even with that lofty $21 million asking price, Douglas Elliman’s Alexander is confident the home will sell quickly. Inventory for luxury, waterfront, single-family homes on Miami Beach has almost dried up, with demand far exceeding supply. Add to that the Achille Salvagni factor.
“This property is beyond comparison to any other Miami Beach home available right now. The depth and detail of the artistry and craftsmanship has to be seen to be understood,” he says.

THE 6 BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN EUROPE IN 2021
Anticipating how travel will glance in 2021 is a waste of time. However, what's without a doubt is that this year has hit the delight business hard: the meaningful ventures, the mother and-pop organizations, individuals doing things right. So going in 2021 will not simply be an opportunity to reconnect with ourselves and feel the buzz of showing up in another spot and another headspace, alive to additional opportunities. As it were, it will be our opportunity to decide in favor of the sort of world we need to live in: one of maintainable organizations, environments and networks, instead of people gazing into the seductively empty bereft of a cell phone screen. It will likewise be an opportunity for a considerable lot of us to recall that we live in a mainland that is one of the extraordinary interwoven designs mankind and topography. Here's the place where we'll be going in Europe in 2021, and it feels progressively basic that we as a whole get out and do likewise – and make a decision in favor of euphoria. For more future motivation, look at our manual for the best occasion objections for 2021 and the best UK objections to visit in 2021.
6. THE AZORES
With the conceivable exemption of Iceland, no place in Europe does land dramatization very like the Azores – the Hawaii of the mid-Atlantic, with thickly forested islands bordered by rough precipices that appear to emerge from the nothingness like goliath green knees from an early stage shower. The archipelago, 950 miles from the bank of parent country Portugal, is a position of volcanic cavities, sulphuric natural aquifers, penetrating whales and surf breaks ignored by epic stacks. The archipelago of biospheres and marine stores has likewise been a calm paragon of practical the travel industry, a kind of European response to Costa Rica.
There are ships and little planes to islands like Faial, Pico and São Jorge, yet the majority of the activity occurs on Sao Miguel, which is all around loaded with great spots to remain. The exemplary twofold header is to put in a couple of evenings each at two sister inns: the Azor, with fresh mod-store calculation and a roof pool ignoring the harbor in the principle town of Ponta Delgada; and the Furnas Boutique Hotel up in the mud-percolating volcanic focal point of the island, where the superstar is the dark stone, Japanese-style warm pool.
In Vila Franca do Campo, the whale-watching and plunging area of interest thirty minutes along the south coast from Ponta Delgada, Convento de São Francisco is a 10-room shop in an exquisitely stark seventeenth century religious circle. Different features incorporate the Sete Cidades Lake Lodge, a progression of wood lodges on a kayak prepared lake in the wild north-west; and the Santa Bárbara Eco-Beach resort , a position of low-threw substantial innovation ignoring a long surf sea shore on the north coast.
By need, the food is consistently locavore, from the islands' popular cheeses to uncommon however delightful fish, for example, wreckfish and blue-mouth rockfish, and cozido das Furnas, a seven-meat stew slow-prepared in Furnas' volcanic earth. This is an immortal kind of spot; a profound nature escape, which feels about directly in 2021.
5. DUBROVNIK AND ITS SURROUNDS, CROATIA
Dubrovnik might be a little overwhelmed with Game Of Thrones sightseers, yet there's constantly been a sure wizardry to this limestone fortification on the Adriatic. Also, what's regularly neglected is the thing that an extraordinary beginning stage it is intended for a legitimate experience. Toward the south, it's not exactly an hour's drive past the languid harbor towns of the Dubrovnik Riviera to Montenegro – a country which has step by step been rediscovering its post-war magic, particularly with the impending appearance of a biophilic-innovator inn from Janu, Aman's new more youthful sister brand. Toward the north, it's under three hours to Mostar, an impeccable Bosnian town of fairylit millhouse cafés and Ottoman stone scaffolds, not a long way from the Kravice cascades, with a turquoise swimmable tidal pond encompassed by Niagara-like falls.
Yet, the alternate approach is offshore, towards the vehicle free, tumbledown Elaphiti islands of Koločep, Sipan and Lopud, handily came to by neighborhood ships. The one to visit in 2021 is Lopud, an island of Renaissance-time stone houses, outlandish gardens and demolished fortifications. Its Franciscan religious community is presently open as the five-suite Lopud 1483, following a meticulous 20-year redesign by Swiss workmanship supporter and donor Francesca Thyssen-Bornemisza. She and her family have filled the 5,000-square-meter religious community with Renaissance and contemporary workmanship, a Franciscan drug store and a reflection garden planned by an Arctic shaman, while protecting the unpleasant plasterwork and patina of the antiquated cloister.
4. SKÅNE, SWEDEN
Sweden's southernmost region infrequently gets the inclusion it merits – in huge part in light of the fact that such a lot of buzz is drawn across the Øresund Bridge from Malmö to Copenhagen. Yet, Skåne is certainly worth investigating, from the interwoven appeal of the city to the lakes, wineries and Nantucket-esque clapboard waterfront towns of the rich open country, frequently alluded to as Sweden's larder.
Malmö has large numbers of the things making it work that have put Copenhagen and Amsterdam on each most-liveable rundown going: youthful, bikeable, streaked with trenches and substantial espresso joints, yet additionally home to a wonderfully saved Dutch-Renaissance old town. However it stays more blended than the disobediently elegant Danish city across the water, particularly in regions like Möllevången, a refined, multicultural piece of town referred to local people as Falafel City. Furthermore, Sweden's generally loosened up Covid-19 guidelines have implied that hip locavore frequents, for example, Bastard, Vollmers and the Höganäs Saluhall food corridor, just as zero-squander lunch most loved Restaurang Spill, have clutched their magic heading into 2021.
A sample of Skåne produce is a decent antecedent to an excursion to the open country: regardless of whether south to the sea shore hovels and marram-grass rises of the Skanör-Falsterbo promontory, or north to the clapboard coastline town of Mölle, where the Grand Hôtel Mölle remarkably investigates the stone sea shore and the wild Kullaberg Nature Reserve, with its porpoises and beacon climbs. Past Mölle, Båstad is another exemplary coastline town, with a customary kallbadhus (cold washing house) spa toward the finish of a wooden dock, having a place with the legacy splashed Hotel Skansen. All over the area, which is by and large calmer than the Stockholm archipelago, there's a relaxed feeling of provenance at spots, for example, at the zero-squander Hörte Brygga in the south-west, with its superb water-side nursery in the mid year. Like an European response to New England, this is the most polished of breaks.
3. SALENTO, ITALY
For a genuine Italian break in 2021, we'll head right to the lower part of its heel. Habitually under-staffed as the nation's response to Cornwall, on its own hot recurrence, the Salento district offers an unpleasant cut rendition of the best of Italy – from the nearly Caribbean west coast to the plunging bluffs of the west coast; from Brindisi down to southernmost Santa Maria di Leuca through the florid dream of Lecce, all beasts and limestone sections. This is a dry, ochre-toned place where there is olive forests and precipice hopping kids, too drowsy to even consider having a very remarkable scene. The cucina povera will in general be plain and unfussy: take the shockingly awesome gnummareddi, or sheep offal rolls, served in the walled garden at A Casa Tu Martinu in Taviano; or the barbecued bream at Lo Scalo, incorporated into the bluffs at Marina di Novaglie, and run by the Longo family for 50 years.
In any case, a progression of little savvy stays have increased the game here as of late. For example, the nine-room Palazzo Daniele in Gagliano del Capo, a nineteenth century apartment given a rich mod-devout makeover by hotelier Gabriele Salini – where travel disruptor Thierry Teyssier dispatched his 700,000 Heures 'fleeting inn' idea. Or on the other hand Masseria Canali, a low-threw, seven-room estate of curves and collectibles west of Brindisi, which opened for takeovers this late spring with a pool deserving of A Bigger Splash.
2. TIMIȘOARA, ROMANIA
This western Romanian city is regularly alluded to as Little Vienna, with its stupendous Habsburg Secessionist structures and roundabout downtown area. In truth, it's not as glossily refined as the Austrian capital, however that is the point. Indeed, even in its stupendous focus, the primary spot in Europe to have electric streetlamps, Timișoara doesn't feel like a scam. Also, as other Romanian urban communities, including Cluj-Napoca and Sibiu, there's a discernible feeling of energetic good faith in this understudy town. A large number of the city's foundations have the vibe of somebody's parlor – like Scârț Loc Lejer, a bric-a-brac bar possessed by a craftsman's group, with a congested nursery, a bordering theater and a gallery of Communist commercialization in the cellar. Somewhere else, there are hopping club evenings at underground Database and practices at the graffiti'd Aethernativ Café, with faint echoes of early Noughties Berlin.
There are celebrations in Timișoara for everything from world music to film, Romany workmanship and jazz, the last of which has consistently been enormous here, in any event, when Ceaușescu pushed it underground. The National Opera House has drama and expressive dance works of art, with tickets at the cost of an IPA in London, and the craftsmanship goes from a road workmanship display in a street passage to the Muzeul de Arta's assortment of wry pictures by Corneliu Baba. All of which drove it to be named European Capital of Culture for 2021, an assignment which might get pushed back a couple of years in the wake of Covid-19. Name or not, this is a legitimate city of culture, and definitely worth a city break.
1. CHANIA, CRETE, GREECE
While its Ottoman-affected harbor and spaghetti bowl of cobble-stoned roads are gently delightful, Chania is sneaking up all of a sudden with regards to its food. From basic ocean side bistros to lovely Cretan high end food, this city on the north-west shore of the Greek island has a select yet rapidly growing scene that is tricking in master palates.

Detail of a painted limestone statue of Queen Meryetamun, the fourth daughter of King Ramesses II (reigned from circa 1279 to 1213 BCE during the 19th Dynasty). Her name means 'Beloved of Amun'. She was promoted to the position of Great Royal Wife to become her father's consort sometime after the death of her mother, Queen Nefertari. This fine sculpture (JE 31413) is now in the Egyptian Museum, Cairo, Egypt. Photo: Tyldesly, Joyce, Chronicle of the Queens of Egypt, Thames & Hudson Ltd, London, UK, 2006. The exquisite workmanship in addition to the gentle smile and graceful presence make this work one of the most beautiful statues of the Ramesside period. Meryetamun's ornate wig is held in place by a double band that supports two royal serpents wearing the crowns of Upper and Lower Egypt. A circular base rests upon the queen's head, decorated with multiple uraei with sun-disks; this base would have once supported the large disk and double plumes, which are typical of queenly headdresses during that period. Ramesses II took at least three of his daughters, including Meryetamun, as queen consorts following their mothers' deaths. Scholars, however, have debated whether this was through consummated marriage or they were consorts in name only. Meryetamun died during her father's long reign and was buried in the Valley of the Queens. #egyptpassion #iregipto #thegiftsofmindfulness #ashleymariemoderndayalchemist #alchemistofunconditionallove #egyptpassion_ #pyramids #spiritualconnection https://www.instagram.com/p/BuUBzG7hzlm/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=180z0j5yxtmuj

While they are unmistakably engaging, there is much discussion concerning how these celebrations came to fruition. Some trust that it started from the West African Prince known as John Canoe. This is likewise as far as anyone knows how the Bahamas Junkanoo celebration got its name. Other’s trust it has French starting points. The most prevalent thinking is that it has to do with the followers in the eighteenth century giving the slaves three days off a year. The slaves would celebrate and move around on those days, which may have brought forth this celebration.
So what is Junkanoo? It is fundamentally the Bahamas adaptation of Carnival! While a lot littler in scale than progressively popular jubilees like that of the Rio De Janeiro Carnival, what Junkanoo needs in the esteem it without a doubt compensates for in credibility and closeness.
Racks of arena seating line the fundamental road like Bay Street, in downtown Nassau. It is a ticketed occasion.

Consequently, ensure you purchase tickets from the Junkanoo Ticket Office at least days ahead of time.

Kitchen and Dining Room Renovation
Sometimes we live in the perfect house, in the perfect neighborhood, but with the wrong kitchen. Does this sounds familiar? It does to many people! The years go by and the more we look at our cabinets and the kitchen layout, the more we wish we could tear it all down and start all over again. With interiors by Amy Tausk of Swoon Interiors and with cabinet and architectural design by Stephanie Frees of Plain and Posh, this home’s owners finally had all of their wishes come true! Their old kitchen felt too traditional with an odd layout and the tile flooring was terrible – it was hard to keep it clean with their deep grout lines. A nightmare for any cook!
Here, Stephanie Frees explains more about the configuration of the space: “When I was brought in to the project, the homeowners wanted to be able to get more light in to the space. It faces East and North and there is a covered patio outside the large north windows that blocks most of that light. As the space was so large, we opted to open up two doorways from the kitchen into the dining room to allow the south facing window light to stream in to the kitchen.”
Take notes on the sources shared by the designer and get ready to pin! I am sure you will feel inspired by this kitchen and dining room renovation.

The Haunting Beauty of a Hut-to-Hut Hike in the Dolomites
With travel restrictions in place worldwide, we’ve launched a new series, The World Through a Lens, in which photojournalists help transport you, virtually, to some of our planet’s most beautiful and intriguing places. This week, Mónica R. Goya shares a series of photographs taken on an extended hike through the Dolomites.
Last August, long before the coronavirus pandemic descended across Italy, I set off on a hike following the Alta Via 1, a long-distance footpath that traverses the Dolomites from north to south.
A monumental mountain range in northeastern Italy, the Dolomites — a World Heritage Site since 2009 — are home to some of the world’s most majestic scenery: colossal vertical limestone walls, gloriously green valleys. There are several Alta Via routes, but the AV1, with fewer exposed sections, is ideal for less experienced hikers.
The trail runs south from Lago di Braies, a chilly Alpine lake in South Tyrol, to Belluno, a town in Italy’s Veneto region. The first few miles include both a ferocious ascent up a slope covered in scree and broad views of a vast plateau — a fitting preview of the striking contrasts to come.
The trail’s northern terminus lies less than 20 miles from the Austrian border, and many villages in its vicinity have both an Italian and an Austrian name — a reminder of the region’s linguistic peculiarities. (In addition to speaking Italian and German, many residents of the Dolomites also speak a language called Ladin.)
Over the course of my nine-day hike, the trail — mostly well marked — snaked its way up jagged bare peaks in picturesque formations: pinnacles, spires, towers. It also wound through lush Alpine grazing lands and valley floors carpeted with pine and fir trees. Largely because of the beauty of the pale dolomitic limestone, panoramic vistas were a constant.
Idyllic mountain huts, called rifugios, are spaced at day-hike intervals along the trail; there are about 30 altogether. (The 75-mile trek typically takes about 10 days to complete.) The trail reaches a maximum elevation of over 9,000 feet and includes a total elevation gain of more than 20,000 feet — which means that arriving early at the rifugios and catching up on rest often feels more like a necessity than a luxury.
Once, while traversing a stretch of trail on my way to a stunning rock formation called the Cinque Torri, I found myself enraptured by the lofty views of Lago di Lagazuoi, a small mountain lake. But my wonderment didn’t last long: Soon after I sat down, apple in hand, the skies went dark with storm clouds.
Rifugio Lagazuoi, my destination for the night, was visible in the distance and appeared close at hand — less than two miles away as the crow flies. But, finding it separated from me by a very steep descent on switchback paths, plus one last backbreaking ascent, I panicked slightly, realizing there was no way to reach shelter before the storm would break. I pulled out my rain gear and soldiered on.
This mountainous heart of Europe, its trails now evoking sublime grandeur, was once the scene of one of the most treacherous battles of World War I — which is now commemorated at the Open Air Museum of Mount Lagazuoi. Andrea, a re-enactor dressed in a historical Tyrolean Rifle Regiment uniform, led us on a guided tour through various trenches and tunnels, describing how the Italian and Austro-Hungarian armies had turned the mountain into a fortress.
Down in Rifugio Città di Fiume, and back at tree-line level, after leaving behind the picture-perfect Alpine meadows of Cinque Torri, with its scattered sheep, cattle and marmots, the air was heavy with the refreshing scent of pine trees. There, gazing at the dramatic peak of Monte Civetta, I first experienced what a local hiker called “enrosadira,” an exquisite glow that happens at sunrise and sunset, when the dolomitic limestone is bathed in gorgeous peachy-pink hues.
Rifugios come in all shapes and forms, from spartan rustic buildings with cracking wooden floors to charming Alpine mountain lodges. But there are common threads among them — in particular the affable service and the chance to experience camaraderie with fellow backpackers from around the world. Facilities are basic, but most of them have a drying room and a coin-operated hot shower — which runs for two or three minutes, to prevent waste. And, yes, there’s Wi-Fi.
The rifugios are normally open from June to September — and they remain open this year, in spite of the coronavirus. But, since some are now operating at reduced capacity, advanced booking is mandatory. New regulations also require visitors to bring their own sleeping bags, slippers and masks. (In normal circumstances, only a sleeping bag liner is required, as blankets are provided.) And be prepared to have your temperature taken before checking in; hut wardens can deny access if your temperature is too high.
Nearly 150 years have passed since Amelia Edwards, an accomplished English journalist, wrote about being haunted by the Dolomites’ “strange outlines and still stranger colouring.” Much has changed since then — but much has endured, too.
The rhythm of a long-distance trek here — the exhaustion, the challenging simplicity of the routine — washes away mundane worries. Visitors are dwarfed by the ever-changing and imposing surroundings. And, all these years later, the splendor of these unique mountains still enchants, and haunts, those who take to its paths.

Blissful Antigua & Barbuda in 7 days!
They say “Life is a beach” and in the Caribbean, this saying couldn’t be truer. Undeterred by their colonial heritage, Antigua and Barbuda are quintessentially Caribbean. Compassionate locals boasting about being able to hit a new beach each day throughout a year, the “Land of 365 beaches” has entrenched itself as a destination of class and preference among families, travellers, honeymooners, and even the most pre-eminent of celebrities, long for luxury holidays in this mere island.
With the ample number of beaches, there’s a lot of water-based activities to engage in Antigua escalating from swimming with stingrays to a romantic sunset catamaran tour or an enthralling jet-ski adventure. Once you etch the periphery of Antigua’s palpable artistic appeal, surely, you’ll stagger upon more alluring traits. Here you’ll be able to witness the prime breeding and nesting colony of the Magnificent Frigate Bird in the world. Reef-fringed Barbuda is one of the outclassed ecological secrets in the West Indies. Her rugged landscapes, splendid serene shores, salted lagoons and abundant wildlife may be a resource as treasured as its fisheries.
The land-lubbers can tour through St. John’s city (the capital of Antigua and Barbuda) and the UNESCO World Heritage site in English harbour along with a fascinating off-road safari to yield an incredible experience. A zip through the rainforest or an adorable heart-warming horseback ride would please your mind.
Fact: Located in the heart of the West Indian colony, about 1000 miles east of Jamaica and approximately 4090 miles from London, averages an eight-hour fifty-two-minute direct flight journey to the V.C Bird International Airport, Osbourn, Antigua. Antigua has an area of 108 square miles and the sister island Barbuda with 62 square miles.
Your 7-day odyssey!
Day 1 – Say hello to Paradise
What about lounging under the lush palm trees relishing the spark of the pinkie white stretches of silky sand, snorkelling under the turquoise blue waters with assured twilights and ravishing milieus? Any idea of savouring fresh lobsters at the beach bar while sipping rum cocktails nearby a pool? Spend your 1st day in the most emphatic way; tranquillizing your muscles and tanning your backs accompanied by world-class amenities at the Royalton Antigua resort & spa 5* multi-centre holiday destination. Just a 13km drive from the V.C Bird International airport, brace yourselves to feast in with the hotels’ exquisite Antiguan buffet and their delectable cocktails.
Day 2 – Discover the Nelson’s Dockyard and party at Shirley Heights
The island is ripe for the venture, though, and it would be a shame to spend the wholeness of your getaway under a sun umbrella. Equip up to take in the history at Nelson’s Dockyard. From the old cannon-topped frigates of the colonial British forces in the 1700s to the glittering silvery yachts that puff down from Freeman’s Bay today has been fluttering down the waters of Nelsons Dockyard. You can see the aged naval capstans lining the water’s edge with a huge anchor left over from the great English naval warships. Track along the hiking traces which consents you to enjoy the park’s natural beauty.
Tip: Nelson’s Dockyard is also home to the fabulous Seafood Friday’s event. Not to be missed for any discerning foodie!
Head onto Shirley heights, a restored military lookout, standing at 490ft gives you the best view in Antigua. No trip to Antigua is complete without a night watching the nightfall over the historic English Harbour whilst dancing to steel drum music, dining BBQ and drinking Cinnamon spiced rum. The Antiguans are the most content people you could ever walk in to, so tag along with a local and enlighten your nightlife.
Day 3- Legacy of the Devil’s Bridge
Self-possessed by limestone rock, the rugged terrain of Devil’s Bridge is the result of millions of years of erosion by the continuous onslaught of the Atlantic Ocean waves on the east coast of Antigua and is famed for the craggy appearance and dramatical swelling of waves. The Devils Bridge has many blowholes in the surrounding rocks erupting like geysers. No, don’t ask me how the bridge got her name, I’m leaving that for you to find out. The spot is also immersed in a lengthy haunting history, so the horror enthusiasts got something I guess.!
Day 4 – Go sweet at Betty’s Hope!
Being one of the primitive sugar plantations dating back to 1651, well-known as Betty’s hope, has the most impeccable fertile soil in Antigua. This stands as a reminder of the deep record of slave ownership by the Englishmen on the island. At present, one of the two sugar mill towers have been restored completely with sails. An on-site visitor’s centre showcases a collection of original tools used in the production process back then. Now I’ve got a slight feeling that you know this heritage landmark is well worth a visit, isn’t it?
Day 5 – Find new friends at Stingray city
Continually rated as one of the top things to do in Antigua, Stingray City will be the highlight of your vacation. Experience swimming and interacting with the rays while feeding and snorkelling with them. Be free enough to click some cuddly snaps featuring your newly found companions *wink*. A short speedboat ride whisks you to a shallow pool with a white sand bottom surrounded by some gorgeous coral reefs, which will surely make your camera tiring.
Day 6 – A day with the “man-o-war” birds
A short boat trip through the sluggish Codrington Lagoon on untrodden Barbuda to reach the prime spot for seeking out the curious red-throated fliers that bellow and bulge with their weird and wonderful mating displays. This is the largest Frigate bird colony in the western hemisphere including a vast reserve of lush mangrove, mud swamps, brackish bayous and waterways. A comprehensive number of pelicans and sea birds are present here while the sublime landscapes mark the far end of the Codrington Lagoon National park.
Day 7- A shopping vibe before take-off
Distancing just 7km from the Royalton Antigua Resort and Spa 5*, Heritage Quay is the place to be when visiting Antigua’s capital city of St. John’s. Offering two floors of shopping, also known as the shopper’s paradise, provides an array of tax- and duty-free merchandise for you to cash in on amazing values and savings from retail prices of the UK.  Electronics, local music, cigars, liquors, fine crystals & china, designer clothing & footwear, swimwear, sporting equipment’s, fragrances, skincare cosmetics, fine jewellery, high-end watches and other souvenir items are just samples of the goods available.
Nibble, Sip & be jolly
From grilled barbecues and tamarind balls at the beach bar to the finest fish exclusively at the Royalton Resort and Spa 5*. Hang out at the resort and bite away from your all-inclusive breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets. Antigua and Barbuda aren’t just handsome tourist destinations, they are a melting pot of persuasion drawing people from all over the world. The Antiguan cuisine is mainly found on the spicy side. The locals often whirl around fresh seafood including red snapper, conch, mahi-mahi, shrimp and lobster, also you’ll also be able to sample French, Italian home-cooked, and American dishes alongside Caribbean fare, including the traditional fungi and pepper pot for which the island is famed.
Tip: Make sure you check out the tasty fare served by street vendors on your way too.

These Are the Most Luxurious Airport Lounges in Asia
Airport lounges are no longer just a place to while away your time in transit. The best airport lounges have become a five-star escape from the masses: spacious, stylish sanctuaries with their own restaurants and à la carte dining, a well-stocked bar plus creature comforts ranging from a day spa to private rooms.
Wind down and relax with a hand-picked list of seven havens for business travelers journeying to and through Asia.

The Pier First Class Lounge, Hong Kong (Cathay Pacific)
Cathay Pacific’s flagship lounge is best described as being “like an apartment owned by a friend, if that friend was far richer than you and had much better taste than you.” However, it’s not your mythical friend’s exquisite taste which makes The Pier First Class Lounge such a stunner.
Credit for that goes to London-based design doyen Ilse Crawford, who developed Cathay’s luxurious new-look lounges along residential rather than commercial lines. The Pier oozes understated elegance, thanks in part to Crawford’s choice of warm, tactile and timeless materials such as onyx, limestone and bronze.

After gliding down the escalator from the cavernous airport terminal to this cozy haven of a lounge, most travelers peel left to visit the dining room or try their luck requesting a foot massage (bad news, there’s almost always an hours-long waiting list). On long layovers, the private day suites provide a relaxing contemplative space while the sizable shower suites with Aesop amenities leave you feeling not only refreshed but recharged.
The large bar is another standout, as is the curated music playlist which seamlessly shifts its vibe to suit the time of day. (We should make mention of the nearby The Pier Business Class lounge, which has a similarly elegant design, great showers plus a Noodle Bar and tended bar of its own — we’d rate this as among the world’s best business class lounges.)

Who gets in
First-class passengers on Cathay Pacific and other Oneworld member airlines flying out of Hong Kong (such as British Airways), along with top-tier frequent flyers across the Oneworld alliance (such as Oneworld Emerald, Marco Polo Diamond and Diamond Plus, British Airways Executive Club Gold, and Qantas Frequent Flyer Platinum and Platinum One).
Centurion Dining Room, Hong Kong (American Express)
What is arguably Hong Kong’s most exclusive restaurant isn’t found behind imposing doors at Admiralty or bathed in the bright lights of Kowloon. It’s tucked away on the upper level of Hong Kong airport, inside the American Express Centurion Lounge.
The restaurant is the AMEX Centurion Dining Room, and the menu is crafted by Lau Yiu Fai, Executive Chef of the InterContinental Hong Kong’s two-Michelin-starred Yan Toh Heen restaurant. A highlight of the all-day menu include Oscietra caviar served atop a mix of Dungeness crab meat and crème fraîche, but served on locally-inspired seaweed crackers rather than blinis.
Well-heeled travellers can also sup on pan-fried sea bass and Hokkaido scallop, with a ratatouille emulsion and a basil lobster sauce; and beef short rib pot-au-feu, adorned by vegetables and shaved truffles atop a small bed of noodles. Add a glass of G.H. Mumm Grand Cordon Champagne and your flight is off to a wonderful start before you even leave the ground.
Who gets in
Passengers whose names are laser-etched onto the invitation-only titanium American Express Centurion card.
Royal Orchid Spa, Bangkok (Thai Airways)
(Source: Luxe Traveller)
This isn’t a lounge per se, but it’s an adjunct to the Royal First Class lounge at Thai’s home hub with offers indulgently hour-long free massages. This is perhaps the major drawcard for first-class flyers, as Thai’s first-class lounge itself can’t hold a scented candle to the best of its competitors.
The serenely quiet treatment rooms are decked out like that of any upscale Thai spa with warm woods and a separate shower area.
Travellers can relax before or between flights with a full body massage incorporating acupressure techniques to relax the muscles, relieve stress and stimulate blood circulation. Additional herbal steam and sauna treatment “ease the aches out of your travel-weary body”, the airline promises. After your session, soothing tea is served in a sitting room while tranquil music plays in the background.
Who gets in
First-class passengers on Thai Airways (however, business class and Royal Orchid Plus Platinum status frequent flyers qualify for a free neck and shoulder or foot massage).
The Private Room, Singapore (Singapore Airlines)
“The Private Room”. Even the name has a certain patina of exclusivity. And Singapore Airlines chose that name well, as the only way you’ll get into The Private Room is to have a boarding pass for Singapore Airlines’ first-class suites.
The emphasis is on not only privacy but calm serenity, a world away from the clatter of the nearby business lounge which is almost always bursting at the seams. That said, The Private Room isn’t a lush oasis of luxury: it’s a little old-world and perhaps even worn around the edges, which is why Singapore Airlines is embarking on a 50 million Singapore dollar ($36 million) upgrade of The Private Room and its other flagship Changi Terminal 3 lounges across the next two years.
The dining room is certain to remain a centerpiece of The Private Room’s appeal. With its parquetry floor, wide plushly-padded leather lounge chairs and wall panelling, discrete lighting and dusky tones the dining room channels the spirit of an English club. The Private Lounge’s dining room menus are changed seasonally, although several favorites of the frequent first class flyers remain as a culinary north star, including wok-friend lobster, chirashizushi and, of course, satay. Piper Heidsieck Rare Millesime and Charles Heidsieck Champagne headline the drinks menu.
Who gets in
The Private Room is exclusively for first class passengers on Singapore Airlines.
Japan Airlines First Class Lounge, Tokyo Narita
(Source: Lajollamom.com)
Japan is a food-lover’s paradise, and the nation’s dueling flag-carriers ANA and JAL (Japan Airlines) both take pride in the meals they serve in flight and on the ground. Japan Airlines has, for the time being, wrested that crown with the dining room of its newly-renovated first-class lounge at Tokyo’s Narita Airport.
Two sushi chefs serve freshly-prepared sushi and sashimi, with the menu changing weekly so that regular travellers don’t tire of the same fare.
There’s also a ramen counter, a champagne bar where the choice between Taittinger and Laurent-Perrier could involve a glass of each, and, as you’d expect, a premium sake selection. Other creature comforts available at the JAL’s flagship first class lounge include a shoe-shine service.
Who gets in
First-class passengers on Japan Airlines and other Oneworld member airlines flying out of Tokyo/Narita, along with top-tier frequent flyers across the Oneworld alliance (such as Oneworld Emerald, JAL Diamond and Premier, and Cathay Pacific Marco Polo Diamond and Diamond Plus).
Qantas Lounge, Hong Kong
(Source: Qantas)
This unassuming Asian outpost of iconic Aussie airline Qantas eclipses most business class lounges when it comes to pre-flight bites. Instead of bland “international” or predictable Western food, travelers have a last chance to enjoy authentic Hong Kong meals.
No wonder there’s often a queue at the BBQ Pork Bar for some Cantonese-style char siu, or a frisson of foodie excitement when the yum cha trolley tray trundles around with dim sum and custard egg tarts.
Complement this with a cocktail or two from the bar and you’ll soon appreciate why the Qantas lounge is a hit with business class passengers and frequent flyers alike.
Who gets in
Business-class passengers on Qantas and other Oneworld member airlines jetting out of Hong Kong, along with frequent flyers holding Oneworld Emerald and Oneworld Sapphire status (equivalent to Qantas Platinum and Gold, British Airways Gold and Silver, and Cathay Diamond and Gold).
Qatar Airways Premium Lounge, Bangkok
(LoyaltyLobby.com)
Qatar Airways has barely a half-dozen lounges in its network, but they’re all classy affairs.
The Premium Lounge at Bangkok’s Suvarnabhumi Airport opened earlier this year, with this business class lounge winning instant popularity for its à la carte dining room – a sight more common in first-class lounges.
The Bangkok lounge is a compact version of Qatar’s highly-regarded Premium Lounge at London Heathrow Terminal 4, so travellers can expect the same quality of furnishings plus a dress code which keeps things respectable among the hoi polloi (even if you consider shorts suitable for Bangkok weather).
Who gets in
Business-class and first-class passengers on Qatar Airways and other Oneworld member airlines flying out of Bangkok (a long roster which includes British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Japan Airlines and Malaysia Airlines).

Hate That Brick Fireplace? 12 Ways to Make It Look Better
Your brick fireplace is a dependable source of heat and, if it’s wood-burning, also helps keep your heating costs low. But the outdated design may have become an eyesore, and years of soot can make it look even worse. We found several ways to make your brick fireplace look better – much, much better.

Taco quartz tile
One way to update your fireplace is by covering it with tile. “Because tile requires a smooth surface, though, and brick is anything but, you will need to use a cement backer board,” advises J.B. Sassano, president of Mr. Handyman. “This handy invention allows you to skip the torturous task of adding layers of mortar to create a level surface on which the tile can attach,” he tells Freshome. “Instead, you attach the tile to the board and the board to the fireplace.”

Shayla Copas of Shayla Copas Interiors in Little Rock, AK tells Freshome that floor-to-ceiling, large, textured tile surrounding a fireplace wall is trending. The design brings the outdoors inside.

Mike Nutter of Ply Gem recommends adding a stone veneer to your fireplace. Some stone veneer products have an interlocking system that doesn’t require mortar. Also, he says stone veneer is lighter and less expensive. “When compared to real stone, stone veneer is up to half the weight, creating an easier installation process.” Regarding cost, Nutter explains, “Stone veneer can vary in price from $6 to $9 per square foot, compared to natural stone cladding, which can cost $15 to $30 per square foot.”

This light-colored stone fireplace contrasts the deep grey color on the adjacent walls and ties all of the other grey tones together. Stone slabs like this one are available in marble, granite, limestone, marble, quartz, quartzite and onyx.

Stacked stone/stacked stone veneer
Nothing beats the look of a stacked stone fireplace, but a stacked stone veneer is easy to install and less expensive. And it’s hard to tell the difference between the two.

Kiss your brick fireplace goodbye with this Ecosmart fireplace that uses bioethanol and is environmentally friendly. It produces no smoke and does not need a vent. Cleaning involves wiping it down with a damp cloth.

Concrete
A concrete fireplace surround fits well in this contemporary home. In addition to being a composite material, concrete can also add color. Concrete fireplaces are available in colors including limestone, taupe, pewter, graphite, dusk, charcoal and white linen.

In this contemporary design, the hot-rolled steel fireplace with black steel rivets creates an industrial vibe and makes a dramatic statement.

Issabel Williams, a crew member at Fantastic Services in London, recommends paint and art to update your fireplace. “You can give your plain brick fireplace a modern rustic makeover if you paint it white,” she tells Freshome. Williams also recommends using the space above the fireplace to hang a painting.
The wood mantel and small tiles help to update this fireplace: Image: Julia Ryan

“A wood mantel and substantial corbels can add a sense of warmth and provide visual separation between the fireplace’s front and the upper wall,” Williams says.
Add architectural details to your fireplace with an extended mantel. Image: Exquisite Kitchen Design

Williams also recommends extending the woodwork up to the ceiling. The black and white contrast works well in the photo above.

Mixed materials
Can’t choose just one material? You don’t have to with this fireplace that combines stone, tile and stainless steel, which work well against the warm, natural colors in the room.

In this modern home, polished concrete is used for the main fireplace hearth. The wall panel mantel is made of polished concrete strips, with wood above and below the fireplace.
What are some of your favorite modern fireplace ideas? We’d love to hear about them in the comments below!
