2022 was the year I discovered fanfiction that I enjoyed reading, and I thought I'd share my mountain of fics that really stood out to me!

Jeeves and Wooster

Green Ice - Jeeves and Wooster & Lord Peter Wimsey

I'm hesitant to explain why I like this fic so much. It was 'spoiled' for me before I read it, and I wonder what the experience would have been like if I hadn't known where it was going ahead of time. So, perhaps I'll just say that it uses Bertie Wooster's position as possible unreliable narrator to add a really interesting dimension to his character and explore an aspect of note about the Jeeves and Wooster universe, and does so within a rip-roaring mystery which feels very authentic. AND Peter Wimsey is in it!

The War of the Worlds and All That - Jeeves and Wooster

In which Jeeves and Wooster thwart an alien invasion. Which is an utterly bonkers idea, somehow pulled off because said invasion hinges around the exact kind of dilemma which is entirely commonplace in Bertie Wooster's life. I was absolutely hooting with laughter throughout this whole thing.

Sherlock Holmes

The Craven Hive - Meticulously researched and textually deep historical pastiche with some absolutely beautiful character moments. Dr Watson returns from his war service and decides to assist in the treatment of shellshocked soliders. Of course when danger is at hand, he has to call in his old friend...

The Unsinkable Ship - Another meticulously researched piece. Holmes and Watson end up on board the Titanic. Much of the work is the pair going around exploring the ship, talking to each other and their fellow passengers (often real people), and dealing with navigating retirement together. They have such an old married couple vibe in this. Oh, and then the ship gets struck by an iceberg.

The Afterlife of Dr John H Watson - Good grief thing thing is absolute exquisite torture and I've read it I don't know how many times. Has entirely changed how I read 'The Blanched Soldier' and 'The Lion's Mane'. I get very very bored at 'kissy stuff' in stories, but the pivotal kiss in this GOT ME BAD.

The Taste of Truth - Delicious dark fantasy. If Neil Gaiman had written it, it would have won a Nebula.

Grit in the Sensor - Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century - Ok ok just hear me out on this one.... Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century is a very fun but silly Saturday Morning Cartoon which had a wealth of absolutely dynamite sci-fi concepts bubbling below the surface which it didn't ever address. One of these is that there is a robot who appears to have gained sentience by reading Watson's work. This fic unpacks that concept in a beautiful heartfelt way. It's narrated from Robot Watson's point of view, which leads to a delightful mixture of 19th century patois with machine logic.

Fullmetal Alchemist

Of Skulls and Secrets - I really enjoy it when people bring in the very bonkers real life history of alchemy into FMA stories, and this piece honestly feels like it could have been an extra chapter or OVA.

FMA Beyond - I don't know what to tell you. It's like Hiromu Arakawa wrote and illustrated more Fullmetal Alchemist. I got tingles when I started reading it. It gets Al right, which is always important to me :D

What makes Book of Farside a science fantasy?

Science fantasy is a pretty grey category, in my opinion, something I attribute largely to mainstream publishing being a big chicken. So, I wanna explain what I mean by science fantasy in Farside. Because, at first glance, you might go "but wait, the technology is 19th century, surely it's not science fantasy?"

So, the easiest way to start this is comp titles:

Netflix/League of Legend's Arcane

the Green Bone Saga by Fonda Lee

and the How to Train Your Dragon movies

Those stories, and Farside, share a common element: the use of the magical and mysterious in combination with science and engineering.

In the Farside universe, in the world of Lumira, there are a lot of types of magic. Specifically, there's: Caster, Farside, Berserker, and Mistling. All of these magics are restricted to specific people under specific circumstances.

And all of them have people actively working toward removing those biological and otherwise specific restrictions and making all of those magics usable to all people, not just a few. This is seen in dangerous street drugs, such as Rage, which simulate Berserker magic. It is also seen in technology - many specialized technologies and tools used in Topside are powered and shaped by Casting Stones. This is seen as a step in removing the restriction, as the casting stone tech, known as ArTech, is usable by anyone.

However, this isn't the only way people combine science and technology. Dragon riders use ancient magic and modern tactics, including weaponry and strategy. Casters are just as likely to run into gunslingers than anything else.

Ship engines are strengthened by stones carved with Wind and Fire. The spinning stones, some of bone and some of wood and some of jewels and minerals, act as the cores to a great deal of tech.

And then, of course, there are those looking to create casting stones anyone can throw, and not just those with caster blood.

Then, we get into prostheses. Advanced prostheses. Fancier than FMA prostheses, prostheses. They've got nerve connections. They've got temperature sensors. They give strong feedback. How? Magic metal. When casting stones are made of a billion different materials because of their ability to channel magic, sometimes those materials have magical properties all on their own.

There's a lot more to this. But this is where I'm starting. I'll reblog this and add more as I get better at articulating.

First off, a big sahkdjgsdkjghjksd at Al calling out his brother for being too emo. Now more importantly: Al being in the armor means he can hide his emotions much better, but even then I’d still say Ed is the naturally more emotional one. I notice a lot that Al often just stands and watches Ed be upset and act out (and even as kids he seemed to just let whatever mood Ed is in run its course, and I think this is actually what Ed usually wants/needs when he’s in emotional distress, to just be left to feel what he needs to feel without interference) and only interferes when he’s trying to get Ed back on track. When Ed ‘sulks’ too long (even after something extremely traumatic for both of them--Al is definitely just as upset, but he’s processing it differently), Al tries to get him to move forward rather than dwell on the bad stuff. He’s optimistic and avoidant of emotional conflict and I bet he just doesn’t want to think about the things that bother him, and doesn’t want to watch Ed think about it either. 

[Mustang:]There’s a reason you became a state alchemist, right, Ed? Can you really afford to get distracted by every lost cause?

And when Mustang says this to Ed, the camera is on Al looking down. Internalizing his words. He probably decided Mustang is right. So he decides to keep his brother focused, remind him why they’re here and what they’re doing.  

But overall, I find it extremely interesting that ED is the more emotional of the two brothers, when by character archetypes you’d expect Al to be. But Al is in general much more detached from his own emotions, and while the armor exacerbates this since he can’t express himself the same, he really was always like that. Ed is inclined to instantly react emotionally to upsetting things while Al is more inclined to absorb info (aka upsetting/traumatic experiences) and ruminate about them for a long time before before reaching a conclusion/deciding on a course of action. Then there’s Ed who is ALL about taking action and thinking later. 

MBTI personality analysis rant below

mbti--to me this feels like a difference between an ESFP and INFJ, which is what I believe they are anyway. Both have their F functions as second, so in general they aren’t primarily led by emotions or values--Ed is more led by the physical here and now and how to make the most of it, and Al is more led by gathering as much information as he can and analyzing it before reaching a definitive conclusion or vision leading him to finally act on it. Both are very single-minded, but Ed is actually much more easily sidetracked and willing to improvise in achieving his goal, while Al is pretty one-track minded and thus keeps Ed focused. That’s because of their different Se and Ni positions. But in terms of emotions and values/beliefs, Ed’s begin with himself, using himself as a reference point, like a Fi user. While Al uses others as a reference point. Yeah Al is the more “moralistic” of the two brothers, which by tropes indicate he’s a Fi user, but most of his values appear Fe-based. As in, he sees an objective standard of values that everyone shares, and is able to understand how different people have different values but also be frustrated when that Standard Set of Values is ignored because society has rules dammit. He also is more easily able to detach from how he feels to consider different perspectives, which is something a Fe user, especially an aux-Fe user since their primary function is inclined to collect information before judging it, is able to do. which a Fi user can’t do, and is something Ed can’t do when he feels strongly. Ed’s is still a Se-dom and so collecting info and taking a while to judge it is how he operates as well, but in situations like this episode, he HAS reached that judgement and his Fi can’t get past how he feels. Meanwhile Al, even though he probably is just as upset as Ed, is more able to detach and analyze those feelings in private and hide them in order to not burden others, and keep his eyes on their goal.

Real or Dream?

Woke up earlier because of some pinching cramps in my tummy.

I went to bed after being kinda hungry? Family decided oily take-out was the way to go for dinner. I was held up doing stuff so I got to the food late--meaning reheated leftover pickings for me. There wasn't really much on the plate so I was actually still mildly hungry after dinner, but at that point it was late and I wanted to get some sleep before working later today and all that.

I woke up around 8:30AM thinking "WTF am I up so early?" I've got a PM/closing shift today so I was definitely planning on sleeping until noon.

I was about to go back to sleep when I felt a gurgle in my guts--felt more than heard it. An air pocket or something was shifting in my intestines..and it hurt.

I spent a few minutes rubbing at my tummy, pushing on it, trying to get the gas bubbles or whatever it was to stop making me feel like something too big was tearing up my insides on its way wherever.

I'm sure it was gas or something built up from the super-oily take-out. I didn't get to burp or otherwise release whatever it was...but eventually my rubs managed to dissipate whatever it was enough for me to go back to sleep. I had some extremely weird dreams though.

In my dreams there was apparently some monster that we were on ambiguous-friendly terms with. Like...think Envy's huge lizard form from FMA. In the dream I woke up in my own house and somehow everyone else congregated in the master-suite in the house and that thing decided that it wanted to play seeker in a game of hide-n-seek. I remember quietly dashing through the house with the low-key fear that it would eat those that it found. I grabbed a book and my music player and decided holing up in the car in the garage was a good place to hide. Better than being eaten if I were found behind a couch or something...and the garage was the furthest part of the house from the starting point...also, if it came to it I'd maybe just drive and run away--license be damned and all that.

I got to the garage to find the door halfway open and the place completely empty. Basically, our vehicles had been stolen, apparently. Like anyone else with a garage door running on electricity and such, my family's always a bit paranoid about whether or not the thing actually shuts. If the door or sensors decide that the door hit something on the way down, the door goes back up. We've seen it happen in reality when someone leaves a bike too close to the sensors or maybe the wind blows a leaf into the path of the sensors as the door is coming down.

I saw the missing cars in my dream and immediately abandoned the game of hide-'n-seek to inform my family that our cars were gone. The "Envy" monster was somehow no longer a part of the dream. Welp, cue the usual fury and panic over having been robbed and such and everyone accusing everyone else of not being careful. Demands for whom was the last to come into the house via the garage and which one of us, if any, did the usual lock-up procedure before bed (checking all the doors and windows are locked before going upstairs). One family member chimes in that they did the lock-up procedure, but they didn't open the door to get eyes on whether or not the garage was actually closed. Cue me "remembering" that I did get eyes on it and that it was definitely down all the way before I headed up to bed.

I pulled out my fitness/activity tracker on my phone and went digging, seeing if it would have recorded the 2 minute walk-around I did checking all the doors and windows before I went to bed the night before to prove I did it and give us a timestamp. Apparently, the activity tracker caught my early morning tummy rubs and such (again, in-dream)...so...that made it into my dream? It had recorded activity as "Tummy rubs" and somehow had a video of the thing? Way to spy on me, phone?

Weird dreams for sure. The fact that the tummy ache and rubs made it into my dreams makes me wonder if the ache and rubs was a dream or if it was real or what? I'm positive the ache and rubs were real because I set my alarm for noon when I woke up at 8:30AM...and I only woke up at that time because my tummy was hurting. Yeah...blurring the lines between fiction and reality first thing in the morning. I'm just happy I got to dream about tummy aches and rubs ^^ My regret is that even in the dream it was me rubbing my own tummy...if I was gonna dream a tum-scenario I'd have hoped that my 2D crushes or whatever would be there to administer the rubs...or maybe be a bit sadistic with my guts and lay hands on it to make the ache worse rather than soothe.
