The Luka Trade.

There are plenty of ways to build a contender in the league. You can do what OKC did: Draft well, develop 3 MVP level talents, cash your chips at the right time, build up a war chest of draft picks and over the course of a few years, with smart drafting and trading, use those picks to build back better. You could do what the spurs did: Suck for a while and then win the draft lottery and build around your generational rookie and hope he stays. You can trade for a superstar to get you over the hump like Toronto did in 2019, Build up two superstar talents and then trade for a deep roster like Boston did.

Or you know. You could just be the fucking Lakers. Terrible mismanagement in the front office? No problem. One of the greatest players of all time wants to play for you. Because you're the lakers. Draft poorly? It's fine, use those to get Anthony Davis and win a chip. Because you're the Lakers. Worried about who your franchise superstar is gonna be after LeBron retires and AD leaves? Dallas calls YOU and says we want to trade our top 3 player in the world Luka Doncic for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a First Round pick. Two birds with one stone. Because. You're. The. Fucking. Lakers.

We talk about teams getting fleeced a LOT. I have never seen a team basically ask another team to fleece them like that. Because this trade only benefits LA. It's crazy.

Because LA walks away with all their young talent and their draft picks still intact and a top 5 player in the league who will inevitably be their franchise superstar for the next decade.

Dallas is trying to spin this as putting themselves in a win now situation and say that AD is now their franchise talent. AD is 31. Turning 32 in march. Luka is 25. You've traded for someone six years older and does not have the offensive capability of Luka Doncic. Yes, AD makes you better defensively, but it still gives Kyrie and Klay and the rest of the mavs a harder workload on offense.

It honestly seems like a short-sighted and stupid decision by the Mavericks to trade away a young top 3 player for an older top 5 player. Not to mention, even if we're gonna go with the idea that Mavs front office had their heart set on trading luka. Did you really not approach anybody else first? You think the rockets wouldn't trade away a great center in Sengun, maybe Jalen Green? Some good role players like FVV and Dillon Brooks and oh i don't know a billion draft picks? You had to trade him to LA for AD, Max Christie and a First Round Pick? What the fuck?

You're not putting yourself in a win now scenario and you're not setting yourself up for success in the next few years since from now to 2031, you only have, what? 3 first round draft picks? That's definitely not enough to build up a contender.
