Memes.

Meme Definition:
1. an element of a culture or system of behavior passed from one individual to another by imitation or other non-genetic means.
2. An image, video, piece of text, etc., typically humorous in nature, that is copied and spread rapidly by internet users, often with slight variations.
Cultural Memes: memes are cultural terms, ideas or behaviours that are generally thought to be ‘transmitted by repetition’ (Dictionary.com)
Around the mid 1990s meme clips where shared on Usenet forums. In 2005 video memes became popular on YouTube. Video memes such as ‘Rickrolling’, ‘Harlem Shake’ and ‘Turn Down for What’.
“Memes are “loaded” on variouse vehicles: images, texts, artifacts, or rituals...memes are idea complexes and meme vehicles are their tangible experssions” (Ibid). Social media sites such as Twitter and Facebook made it easier for people to share GIFs and image macros. Image Macro is a digital edit featuring a picture or artwork, superimposed with some form of text. Most common form of internet memes.

Internet memes can stay the same or evolve over time. They spread rapidly and can reach worldwide popularity within a few days. Memes usually are formed from some social interaction, pop culture references or situations people often find themselves in. Some companies use internet memes in viral marketing to help sell their products.
“Memes propagate themselves in the meme pool by leaping from brain to brain via a process which, in the broad sense, can be called imitation’ - Dawkins 1976
When scrolling through Facebook nowadays all i see are memes. Mostly gaming memes as i do follow a lot of gaming pages on Facebook. I think the majority of my own profile is made of up gaming memes. A good example of Dawkins theory is one of the most recent video games viral meme is from Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas.

Fans have imitated the meme by evolving it and creating their own versions.

Some fans went even further and photo shopped the image.

Some theorists challenge this view of how virality works, as being too simplistic.
“Our use of “spreadable media” avoids the metaphors of “infection” and “contamination” which overestimate the power of media companies and underestimate the agency of audiences.” - Jenkins, et al. 2013. 20-22
Metatext:
Metatext is a text that reflects or comments on another text. I would say a good example of this is the way people use memes. Facebook users commenting on other peoples statues with memes and GIFs.
Why do we make memes?
“Three positions regarding the nature of memes: Mentalist driven, behavior driven, and inclusive (Shifman 2000)
An article i found from online lists 7 reasons why we would ever create an cultural meme...(LifeWire)
1. For the challenge of it
2. To make a political statement
3. To promote awareness of current events and issues
4. To make money through advertising and syndication
5. To spread pro- or anti-religion messages
6. To poke fun at your personal friends.
7. Because you’re angry that other people can make unremarkable photos famous.
But why do we enjoy memes so much?
The majority of memes are saved and share due to the fact they are relatable and relevant. Shiftman wrote an article about why people share memes. As part of his research he analysed 30 video memes. This was his outcome.
“Yielding six common features: focus on ordinary people, flawed masculinity, humor, simplicity, repetition, and whimsical content. Each of these attributes marks the video as incomplete or flawed, thereby invoking further creative dialogue”
In September 2018, Vice posted an article about why memes make us so happy.
Dr Kanan Khatau Chikhal believes they make us feel less alone.
“Human beings need three things: Love, self-esteem, and security. In our journey of seeking security, belongingness plays a very important role....That’s why people relate to memes-because they resonate with them, which creates a sense of identification. We form groups, and this identification with the meme culture is largely perceived with a feeling of ‘I’m not alone’“.
Dr Chikhal also states that memes help us bond with others online. If the meme didn’t have an impact on you, you wouldn’t have touched that forward button. Memes also impact and change the way we think and help us connect with our deeper selves.
