With @inktober just around, let us take a walk down memory lane. It is the year 2014 and a young niece Tannie was ready to BE AN ILLUSTRATOR. (Read in super hero voice)...or so she thought. . Turns out when you spend over ten years making logos you forget how to draw. So I knew I needed to take some time getting the rust off and regain some of those lost skills. I heard about this #inktoberchallenge and thought it would be a fun way to get the wheels moving again. Unfortunately I was a little too ambitious! . I initially had the goal of making a comic. No I had no prior experience with creating comics and don’t even really read them 🤪, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me! Well I got about 4 panels in and lost interest. Cuz it turns out comics are hard, and I still couldn’t really draw yet. So the rest of my Inktober fell into a random mix of whatever I felt like drawing 🤷🏻‍♀️ BUT! I did come up with Frank, our favorite shark (see a few posts back) and I did learn a lot about working with ink. So good job 2014 Tannie. 2020 Tannie thanks you. You can make this: FAILED BDAY GIFT Well yes, this happened I have failed a project big time. This idea started like many others on YouTube. I have watched and video where they use hardwood to edge band plywood, and it looked relatively easy to do. So I wanted to surprise my girlfriend for her birthday and build here a makeup shelves during the Covid-19 pandemic. The planning of this project was done so bad I ended up over complicating everything big time, and in the end, there was no turning back and no way of fixing it. The project ended up in my woodshop and, it looks ok and it does the job.  Lucky for me I did three projects in parallel for her birthday so se did end up getting her presents but not all of them. So what I have learned from this: - Always plan before you cut. - Do your research. - And if it looks complicated, it is usually the wrong way. It’s friiidaay! 🥳 After a long week of work I feel just as deflated as this toilet paper prototype that never made it anywhere but the bottom of my failed projects box. The point is that sometimes we are our own worst critics that are too harsh on ourselves but it’s also important that we are strict and push ourselves to perform the best we can. I’m counting down the hours till the end of the business week and looking forward to an online meeting with British Polymer Clay Guild’s Scottish Branch as it feels like it’s been forever since we all chatted. 02.05.17 | I think it's time to celebrate projects that didn't see the light. #Gourmade is a very close project to my heart for many reasons including collaborating with my two best friends on research, conceptualization and design. The restaurant will launch at some point yet with a different shell. I believe in the the value of design projects that failed or rejected by clients. They allow you to investigate and question the industry as well as your own understanding of the brief. As perfectly put by Jon Sueda: "What happens when graphic designers extend the boundaries of their discipline and initiate creative explorations built on risk and uncertain ground?" Piece of advice: don't settle for mainstream standards. Aim to raise the design caliber. This may not be the perfect example. But it's one of the #failedprojects that taught me a lot in so many different aspects. #Respect to every piece of rejection that fuels us to become better.
