Having seen the major tourist sights in Agra on my early trips to India – and witnessed a fair amount of the over-tourism and hassle, I wasn’t really in any hurry to return. It’s not for nothing that Agra has something of a bad reputation among tourists to India for the number of touts and scams that prevail(ed) here.

The most popular (and best weather-wise) time to visit Agra is between late October and early March. Two weeks in Sri Lanka, I thought, would allow me to acclimatise to the month I had before me in India…I was wrong. But sometimes, ignorance really is bliss.

Wide-eyed and gob-smacked, nothing could have prepared me for this country of 1.33 billion. But, don’t get me wrong, I would do it all again… that sensory-overloaded adventure in one of the largest countries on earth.

We began our journey on India’s western coastline, picking the well-known tourist town of Goa. Hammocks, beach parties and markets play homage to the historical hippie’s movement from the 70s. It felt safe enough for two Australian girls in their mid-20s to relax in before heading north.

Beginning the journey

I used Booking.com to find a one-week stay, close to the cafes and beach. Getting from the airport to Goa was a one-hour drive and we booked a private shuttle safely in the airport.

While Goa is known for its fish curries, we decided to go vegetarian for the month. It was easier than I thought. India does vegetarian well and, if you’re like me, you won’t feel a lack in your diet. Be careful of cocktails though. I’d suggest sticking to beer because the server opens it in front of you.

When in India, it’s best to lean on the side of precaution.

Should you do a tour?

Seasoned-travellers (and having lived in SE Asia for over six months), we felt confident once we were at our destinations. But, we didn’t want to risk taking overnight trains alone or trying to navigate cities like New Delhi. We also knew many of the spots that were on our list, weren’t easy to get to.

After much deliberating between “should we do it ourselves” and “we’re two young girls in India”, we decided on a 15-day tour with Gap Adventures.

In hindsight, some of my favourite memories happened in villages I would have never visited. We were treated like royalty, on a camel ride through a town called Tordi. The locals welcomed us with smiles and waves – an unspoken dialogue that helped me understand the beauty of their culture.

Wrapping up in New Delhi

The tour we chose wrapped around New Delhi, including Jaipur, the pink city, into the desert, and over to Agra, home to the majestic Taj Mahal. The quintessential holy city, Varanasi, where millions of Hindus go to cremate their loved ones on the River Ganges, was the last stop on the two-week trek.

Advice for first-time visitors

I still think of many of these colourful memories, nearly three years on. For first-time visitors to India, I suggest following a similar path as we did. Those rare moments of solitude are essential on a trip to India and being with a group offers you (and your family back home) peace of mind.

You can still pick moments to explore autonomously. But, you can do it with the safety of a group knowing where you are at all times. Trust me, India isn’t the place for big egos. Accept the help and enjoy making new friends in unfamiliar lands.

But before the forts, cows, spices & curries…

It’s a good idea to explore in a group, Swarn Jayanti Dwar, Pathankot.

Prepare yourself!

When it comes to India, you can’t overprepare. Okay, maybe, but recognise this is going to be unlike any other place you’ve ever been. It’ll push you to the limits, but there are beautiful lessons to unravel.

Visas & onward flights

Before you book your flight (and your tour), apply for a visa. Every traveller requires a visa, so don’t assume you can get this once you arrive – here’s the official website.

The same goes for your onward flight. We missed our first flight from Sri Lanka to India because we didn’t have proof of a flight out of the country. Again, we assumed we could do this there. They won’t let you on the flight, so have it printed out as you board.

Vaccinations & travel insurance

As I was living in Bali at the time, all my vaccinations were up to date. I recommend visiting your doctor before you leave to find out what you need to be covered for. World Nomads.

Clothes & daily supplies

Expect to be uncomfortably hot, a lot of the time. But, you’re in India, so respect cultural norms when it comes to clothes. T-shirts are better than singlets. Long, flowy skirts are favoured over shorts. It’s important to follow cultural customs, especially in religious areas. You can’t expose your legs at the Taj Mahal. You’ll discover ‘rules’ like this, along your journey. Pack accordingly.

Be conscious of what you wear, particularly in religious areas.

Money & belongings

Don’t assume in a country of billions, ATMs are readily available. If you’re on a tour, your guide will be able to show you the safe places to get money out. I would take out lots of $200 at a time, leaving most of it in the hotel safe, and bringing $20-30 out with me. Unless we were visiting major attractions with entrance fees, $25 per day is more than enough.

Decompressing after your trip

Whether you’re returning home or flying to another country, give yourself a couple of days to decompress after India. Trust me, you’re going to need it… physically, emotionally and mentally.

For every pungent smell and chaotic, in-humane sight you’ll see, there are many more heart-opening, spiritually-awakening moments that’ll change you.

Get ready for a full mind, body and soul adventure.

The Trip: Ashley is leading three upcoming retreats, starting with “A Tribe Called Tibet” (May 25 to June 1), a week of yin and yang, movement and meditation, luxury and social change on the Tibetan Plateau. The trip will include a transformative day with Educating Girls of Rural China, a nonprofit dedicated to providing higher education to impoverished young women. To Tour or Not to Tour

A Travel Journal Series

When I consider the aspects of travel that I most enjoy, reasons why I get on a plane as often as I can and transport myself to places unfamiliar, I conclude that my motives are threefold: First, I enjoy breaking away from the daily grind and crave new experiences. Second, I learn so much! One of the best things about traveling is how it changes your point of view and expands your perception of the world. Finally, and most true to form, I have wanderlust.

My usual means to satisfy wanderlust is to simply go somewhere—anywhere—and quite literally stroll around, exploring at my whim and leisure. So when my friend, Virginia, had the idea of going on a trip to India, a place I’ve wanted to see for sometime, I said yes before we worked out any of the details. Then she told me she had already looked into tours. Having never gone on a tour, and given my MO when it comes to traveling, I was a bit uncertain if that was the way to go. We discussed itineraries and, ultimately, concluded it was the perfect method of travel for two females whose goal was to see as much of the country as possible in a couple of weeks.

Upon arriving in Mumbai, it becomes apparent to me at once that there will be no easing into the place, no dipping my toe in the waters to test its temperature before diving in. Rather, I’m pulled straight into the vortex that is India and its 1.3-billion populous.

Broken down, the country is comprised of warm people, vibrant colors, aromas of varying appeal, confronting poverty, hypnotic architecture, a vast history, and captivating spirituality. India, it seemed to me, was bursting at the seams. It’s too much, all at once, when you’re not used to it. But, as it turns out, it would be a good initiation for the days to come. It was time to leave on our first organized excursion, and this frenetic energy would carry over to the tour itself — a tour that I dubbed the Fast & Furious Tour of India.

It takes us to six different cities and a national park where we go on safari. After Mumbai, we travel to Udaipur, Jaipur, Agra, Panna National Park, Varanasi, and Dehli. In each city we visit the sights that draw the usual masses; museums, palaces, forts, places of worship, parks, and in Agra, the most famous of monuments: The Taj Mahal. Incredible! We take three flights, two long coach rides, and a train ride. We arrange wake-up calls, keep our bags organized and ready to go, and seem to have a strictly regimented timeframe at each locale. The tour is, well, fast and furious, as I’ve said.

When at last I reach my hotel, I take a few minutes to decompress before joining Virginia on the pool deck for a cocktail. One last respite before we set out on our journey. The next day we meet our guide and fellow travel companions and then set off on a city tour, where even a simple bus ride turns into an epic adventure. Driving on the streets of India is an art form, and not for the faint of heart.

We see the contrast between the affluent and the needy throughout our tour—you can’t miss it—from the slums and Dhobi Ghat to South Mumbai’s multi-million dollar properties. Disparity abounds. As always, the architecture draws me in. My favorite was the spectacular Gothic beauty Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus (formerly known as Victoria Train Station), with its stone domes, turrets, and multiple decorative arches.

We visit the Prince of Wales Museum and then Mani Bhawan, a guesthouse turned museum, dedicated to the life and works of Gandhi. The next day it is a boat trip to Elephanta Island, the carved rock archeological site constructed in the mid-5th century and into the 6th. Then we’re off to the state of Rajasthan and the picturesque city of Udaipur.

We putt along Lake Pichola to our accommodation, the gorgeous Lake Palace Hotel, which is situated in the center of the man-made fresh water lake. The rulers of the day used this palace as their summer home. I fell in love with it at first sight: its marble architecture, lush courtyards and fountains, and scenic view over Udaipur. What a place!

The next day we tour the City Palace, built by Maharana Udai Singh and his successor Maharanas over the next 400 years.

On our last day in gorgeous Udaipur we visit two temples, Eklingji, dedicated to Shiva, and the deserted temple called Nagda, constructed in honor of Lord Vishnu.

Our whirlwind travel itinerary speeds along to the state capital, the famous pink city, Jaipur. Here we tour two sections of the City Palace: the Mubarak Malal, which displays a good collection of textiles, including costumes worn by the royal family as well as Kashmiri pashminas and silk saris, and then Hawa Mahal, know as Palace of the Winds.

Built next to the women’s chambers in the City Palace, this unique 5-storey sandstone structure, with its 953 windows patterned with intricate lattice work, was built to allow the royal ladies to view the streets below without being noticed.

After, we’re whisked off to Amber Fort and the gardens at Amber Fort. The reddish-pink sandstone structure, adorned with intricate doors and windows, is laid out on four levels, each with its own courtyard. It was built on the hill above the town of Amer, just outside of Jaipur, and served as home for the Rajput Maharajas and their families. It’s a gorgeous view up here and an interesting site to visit.

The next morning we leave Jaipur and spend the day driving to the most celebrated symbol of love in the world, the Taj Mahal. Now, I’m not one of those women who fall over themselves upon hearing a story about undying affection, but this one is rather special and even I can appreciate the sentiment behind it. As always, though, it’s the architecture that has me most intrigued; the four pillars at each corner of the structure, the marble arches, the perfectly round central dome, topped with the sacred Hindu pinnacle, and the marble inlay ornamentation. It’s beautiful!

Lighting is everything, we’re told. In keeping with that theory, we make our first visit to the site in late afternoon as the sun is setting over Agra. The ivory-white marble glistens under the sun. I expect that some of the glints of light come from the 28 different kinds of rare stones and metals used in the inlay details of this stunning monument. We make our second and final visit to the Taj Mahal at sunrise the next morning. The verdict: it’s just as beautiful as it was at sunset.

Our last item on the agenda is a visit to the Agra Fort before catching our train the following morning and setting off to our next destination, Jhansi and into the Panna National Park. We board a coach and are given fair warning that the ride will be a rough one; the monsoons have washed out a stretch of the road, turning our luxury coach trip into a long amusement park ride. We arrive and check into our remote wilderness accommodations, a little green around the gills but otherwise intact.

The next morning, after a good night’s sleep and a hearty breakfast over excited chatter about the day to come, we eagerly head out on safari in hopes to spot the forest’s top predator, the Bengal Tiger. Despite Panna National Park being declared as one of the tiger reserves of India in 1994 and it falling under a National Protection Act entitled Project Tiger, by 2009 the entire tiger population had been wiped out by poachers, and it had been done with the collusion of the very forest department officials hired to watch over them. In the years since, efforts have been made to replace the population by relocating tigers from other reserves around the country. Altogether, four tigers (two male and two female) were relocated, established their territory, and bore cubs, bringing the population to 14 in total.

After a couple of hours on safari, we have seen a number of animals, including the Sambar and Spotted Deer, gazelle, the small jungle cat known as the Caracal, vultures, and a number of exotic bird species. As the day comes to an end, it’s becoming less likely we will see a tiger. By sunset all safari jeeps must leave the national park. With just under an hour to go, and despite their low numbers and elusive nature, we get word of a tiger sighting from another jeep. The naturalists communicate its whereabouts to one another. We race across the forest over dirt trails. Several jeeps converge on the cliff’s edge. Everyone jumps out. The naturalist points to the valley below, and then we all squint in the direction of his index finger. Way down, in the gorge beneath us, the tiger lies on a rock by the river, his half eaten meal of what may have been a deer spread on the ground next to him. It’s a long, long way and only those with a better camera lens get a proper photo. We stay for 30 minutes and then it’s time to go. I’m happy to have seen him in spite of the distance.

Next, we travel onto Varanasi and this is where things get rough for me. I actually thought about wrapping up this travel story without ever mentioning what happened at the tail end of my trip, but since its impact affects me to this day, it seemed insincere to omit such a significant event.

As the trip was coming to an end—we had four days left—I abruptly became ill. On the River Ganges I suddenly felt flushed and woozy. I was quick to chalk it up as my reaction to the highly sensitive funeral rituals that were going on around me, but upon my return to the hotel my fever only got worse. Over the next four days, including on a flight from Varanasi to Dehli, I continued to fight a severe fever and nausea. I was lucky to have had travel companions on our tour who were nurses and worked to get my fever down. In Dehli, I saw a doctor who prescribed medication.

When my fever finally broke, I had a short window of time in which I felt just well enough to fly home. After 20 hours of traveling, with my pal, Virginia, who had changed her flight to accompany me, we arrived in Vancouver. I was exhausted and feeling worse than ever so I went into the hospital. After much testing and several weeks back at home and in bed I was diagnosed with a viral tropical fever known as Chikungunya.

Today, six weeks later, I am recovering and well enough to two-finger type this travel story. For my friends, my getting sick seems to have outshone the whole trip. The first thing they want to know is: “Do I regret going to India?”

When I think about all the places we visited, all the sights where we left our footprints, albeit sometimes at a breakneck pace, I’m left with fond memories of the country, its people, and the group that I traveled with on this journey. So when they ask me if I regret having gone, the answer is no. For me, India was an adventure I’m glad I undertook.

I must admit, at times it struck me as strange way to travel, tailing our guide from one locale to the next. But, in the end, I concluded the following: For Virginia and me, an organized tour was the best way to see India. Fitting in all the cities and attractions that we visited in a 16-day period is miraculous, and we could never have achieved that on our own. However, I don’t see myself taking a tour like this again. The pace was too feverish-no pun intended-and the tour too structured. It left no room for spontaneity. In spite of all we did, all we saw and experienced, at my core, traveling to me still means to simply wander. Ah, freedom!

Country #68 - India

The Taj Mahal

Today was quite the whirlwind but it was absolutely incredible! I landed in New Delhi around 4am after sleeping for maybe two hours on the plane. Going through the immigration eVisa line was a breeze and the immigration officer was very welcoming. Though I’m not sure if being wished good luck for taking on India on my own was encouraging or concerning. Upon exiting the terminal I called an Uber and went to my hotel, the Suncourt Hotel Yatri. I had about an hour to drop off my bags and make it to the train station.

I somehow made it with about ten minutes to spare! I found my seat in the EC (Executive Class) part of the train, which was less than five dollars more than a regular ticket and to me at least it was totally worth it when traveling in India. It included a bigger seat as well as water and a meal. The train ride itself took about two hours and before I knew it I was in Agra. After extensively researching the best way to visit Agra by myself I was left with no other option than to hire a private guide: there were no group tour options and it didn’t seem like the safest option to do it all on my own. Plus, at the last minute, I lucked out and found a highly rated guide for only $30 for the day.

I met Happy, my guide, as I stepped off of the train. He walked me to the car where I met my driver for the day who was also the owner of the tour company. They were both very kind and it was really interesting to talk with them and spend the day with them. We drove to our first stop and all I have to say was that the roads were a sight all on their own. There were animals everywhere (cows, monkeys, dogs, cats, water buffalo, goats) as well as tons of people and cars. Also, the smog in India is a really real thing and it will make you sneeze and there is nothing you can do about it except for hope not to get sick from it.

The first stop for the day was the Baby Taj. In many ways, it is a miniature version of the Taj Mahal (hence the name) but it’s definitely not exactly the same. I enjoyed learning about the history from Happy and then spending time walking through and around the Baby Taj on my own. After I finished walking around we headed back to the car where we then drove to the obvious main attraction, the Taj Mahal.

When we got to the Taj there were separate security lines for males and females as well as for tourists versus locals. There were lines everywhere, but thankfully mine only took about twenty minutes to get through. The lines for the locals were so long! I met Happy after security and we walked along to the entrance and then there it was! As massive and stunning as you might imagine. From the distance at first glance it did not even look real.

Our first task was to take tons of pictures, and Happy was an obvious professional at this. He knew all of the spots and angles to take pictures from and we got many great shots in a short amount of time. As we were taking pictures we also started the informational part of the tour, which was quite interesting. As there were no informational plaques or audio guide options having a guide proved to be essential to actually learning about the history of the Taj Mahal.

When we got close to the Taj I walked around the Mosque area to the side for a bit, and then afterwards we went inside. One of my favorite parts was seeing and learning about the marble and the work involved to adorn it with the semi-precious stones. All of the precious stones were stolen by the British, of course. It was crazy to imagine just how much more immaculate the Taj must have looked before everything of value was stolen. The stones that were there, though, were really quite cool, especially the two local stones: the Black Star and the Star Ruby. It was really cool to see how the Star Ruby would look like fire when light was shined on it. Walking through was quick but really very cool to see.

After we finished we sat for a short break before heading back to the car. It was still a bit early for lunch so we headed to a local shop where I bought a tiny version of the Black Star and also bought my mom a gift. For lunch I had Indian, of course, and the chicken that I had (along with the cheese naan) was quite tasty. After lunch, we stopped by a marble shop where there were demonstrations of how they actually would make it in the Taj. I know it was touristy, but I bought a small trinket anyways.

Our last official stop of the day, then, was the Agra Fort. It did not take a long time to see but it was really cool and you should definitely visit when making the trip to Agra. The architecture was really stunning especially in just the detail that was put into everything. There was tons of history to learn about here as well! After learning a lot and taking plenty of pictures we headed back to the car. I still had an hour and a half until I needed to be at the train station so we went to my driver’s house to visit his family, as he lived right by the train station and we were out of things to see in Agra.

It was really cool to meet his family! They didn’t speak English apart from his son, but I really enjoyed getting to meet them and talking with them. We talked about travel, obviously, as well as just India in general and it was a very enjoyable conversation. My favorite part for sure, though, came when I mentioned how interesting it was for me to see all of the animals on the street. His son then nonchalantly mentioned that, ya know, they have a pet goat on their roof. And not just any pet goat, but a three-month-old baby pet goat! I was asked if I wanted to meet him and I think my response is pretty obvious. He was adorable and it was quite the highlight of my day to have a surprise meeting with a baby goat.

After an hour I said goodbye to everyone and headed to the train station. The train back was about an hour and a half and I was served a meal again. Everything was going great until I struggled to find an Uber to take me back to my hotel. There were plenty of Ubers available but three times in a row the drivers canceled on me. I finally found my last driver and headed to the hotel in tons of traffic. It took about an hour to get there, and once I did I was so tired. A big thanks to Suncourt Hotel Yatri for a great room in the heart of New Delhi. I literally collapsed within minutes of entering my room.

It was incredible and I’m so glad to have been able to visit one of the seven wonders of the world. It is honestly no surprise that the Taj is such a famous landmark as seeing it in person you realize just how grand and immaculate it really is. It is unlike any structure I have ever seen before or will ever see in the future, and I definitely recommend a visit if you ever have the opportunity. It was a rushed visit to India but I had a great day and I’m so glad I spent it visiting the Taj Mahal!
