“Alex Winter and I would have two-bass jams when we made Bill & Ted – I won’t say there wasn’t any weed involved…” Keanu Reeves recalls his Wyld bass duels with his excellent co-star
By Michael Astley-Brown
Bill & Ted may have been guitar shredders, but Reeves and Winter are bassists in real life. And their off-set jams sounded like a lot of fun
With the return of his long-dormant alt-rock outfit Dogstar last year, Hollywood legend Keanu Reeves reminded the world that he’s more than just one of the most famous action heroes on the planet; he’s a bass player, too.
In a world-exclusive interview, Bass Player sat down with the John Wick actor to talk everything bass: what drew him to the instrument in the first place, the evolution of his rig and his all-star jams.
One highlight of our conversation centered around (of course) Bill & Ted. But while its stars – played by Alex Winter and Reeves, respectively – are known for their hair-metal guitar antics onscreen with Wyld Stallyns, off-camera the pair played bass. And they played it together – inspired by each others’ licks and, er, other things...
“Alex and I would have bass jams,” Reeves laughs. “It would be like two-bass jams. And that was wacky, good fun.
“Someone would start a central riff, and the other person would move around whatever that riff was… At the time, I won’t say that there wasn’t any weed involved!”
Naturally, the duo needed to distinguish from each other tonally during their low-end wigouts. And Reeves had just the thing.
“And then I might throw in maybe some distortion,” he recalls. “Once in a while when I played by myself, I would put the old distortion pedal through it.
“The jam space at my house in the ’90s had a Marshall amp, and sometimes I played the bass through the Marshall head and played with the distortion there, which I thought was cool.”
Sadly, he also revealed that making William ‘Bill’ S. Preston Esq. and Ted ‘Theodore’ Logan bass players in the movies was never on the cards – although the series’ own bass hero, Death, would later showcase his own low-end skills in 1991’s Bill & Ted’s Bogus Journey.
One of a number of Hollywood actors who are also bass players, Reeves recently partnered with Fender for a short film called Don’t Quit Your Day Dream, during which he described the purchase of his first bass as “like a bass drug deal”. That video has now received almost two-million views in two months.
Stay tuned to Guitar World for the full interview with Keanu Reeves, where he explains why he doesn’t consider himself worthy of a Fender signature model, what he really learned from his bass lesson with Flea, and reveals the answer to the age-old question: what bass would Neo play?

idk if anyone else has said this but the fender series press release specifically says “Player II Sessions, featuring performances and interviews with the four campaign artists, Julien Baker, DIIV, Wallows and April Kae, each showcasing an original performance.” and the press release then links to a (currently unlisted on youtube) wallows video that does have them doing an interview interspersed with a performance of their own song. so like could be completely delusional here, but….seems like we should be getting video of julien doing a little interview + performance of one of her own songs, not just the cover they all did for the promo video.

Did I already said you numbers? If not 3,9 and 11!
You didn't so thank you!!!
3. What’s your favorite fic that you’ve written?
Oooohhhhh that's hard. I think probably in terms of what I've already written it might be One Step Out of Time. I just had a lot of fun writing it and it just sort of ... happened.
Oo no I changed my mind mid sentence but I'm keeping the first thoughts there. It's the Jamie Babysitter series. I love Jamie Phoebe interactions!
9. Do you write every day? If you wrote today, share a sentence of what you’ve written!
Shared the answer to this previously but I'll give you another bit I have written today from The Richmond Job Ch3
Ted wasn't big on soccer but he knew how big it was on this island. Death threats against a player should be big news but everyone involved seemed to be dedicated to pretending this had never happened. Maybe Roy had found them a good job after all ... not that Ted would admit it out loud. “Isn’t AFC Richmond Rupert’s club?” Keeley asked, turning to stare at Rebecca. Rebecca had been silent throughout and her face was a carefully crafted mask.
11. Do you have specific playlists for writing fics?
No specific playlist but I do have vibe songs for certain fics. So I'm currently listening to my "sad emo" playlist for writing Karma and ATRDM which has like a lot of Sam Fender, Yungblud, Noah Kahan, All Time Low, Machine Gun Kelly that sort of stuff

Just arrived a 1965 Candy Apple Red Fender Jaguar in its original black tolex hard shell case! 🍎🏎 - Link in our profile. - This is a nice all original example and generally nicely preserved. It has the expected 1965 features, with the added bonus of a Pre-CBS style "green" nitrocellulose pickguard, something the Jaguar held onto longer than some other Fenders but still a late fitting to find on a mid-'65 guitar. Other period details include an unbound rosewood fingerboard with pearl dot inlay and a transitional gold logo on the matching headstock. The finish is a beautiful deep Candy Apple Red lacquer. The neckplate carries a late "L" series number, The neck is stamped June '65 and the pots are dated to the 19th week of that year. This guitar is an excellent player and complete except the flip-up mute plate is present but not functional-the foam is long since turned to stone. i am sick of the "player series" tarnishing the good name of the fender jaguar. give us all the switches, complexity be damned. if people get confused then they can get a jazzmaster

dec 2022 update!
happy new year! this is going to be long and hopefully none of this is too much information to share but i also don’t care. anyways, i think i’m finally sorting everything out after these fuzzy couple of months. i went from being unsure on how to achieve my goals and feeling so discouraged after having my entire life plan stripped away… to rerouting everything i have ever known. but it’ll be fine because i’ll still be able to achieve my dreams and goals, regardless. here are my updates since december 2022!
1. made the decision that i am testing out of high school to graduate early this spring! i also start on campus community college this january to start my general education credits and finish sooner (also saving some money of course), then transfer into a uc. this is a very drastic change from the entire 21c situation but aw come on… if the traditional standard high school to college route doesn’t work for me, then there’s always other ways!
2. i’m finally getting my own bedroom! i’ve shared one with my younger sister for so long; however, i actually do enjoy sharing with her so i’m pretty upset to not share a room with her anymore. on the bright side though: more space, can decorate it as a desire and i can play my guitar and music as loud as i want :’)
3. i got my first job and a plus since it’s at a boba shop. i can finally live 2018 lynn’s boba shop dreams <3 (tbh i’m just finishing all my little side quests at this point, but hey i want to do what makes me happy so it’s okay)
4. got a new electric guitar! AND it’s a fender (the player series, still good regardless) but oh my god.. huge upgrade from my old electric guitar from the swap meet…
5. saw darlene this winter break! she stayed with our family for like two days in our hotel.. i miss her so much. it was super fun too. we skated, hung out, ate, shopped, stayed up.. i cannot wait to see her again!
6. finally passed my permit test at 16 years old and 11 months... LOL. i definitely do not want to talk about it! but a lot of medical reasons was holding me back from being able to drive but whatever we have (sort of) moved past that. now i estimate around august ish i can get my license hmm.
currently consuming in media… singles inferno s2, yerin baek’s FRANK, valorant, cult’s static, operation: true love, seasons of blossom & reads on the educational system and societal standards.
