★ This Week That Year: How Salman Khan made a ‘commitment’ for a lifetime with Boney Kapoor's Wanted!
Sep 18, 2020
Salman (Khan) was keen to work with Prabhudheva and we were developing a script with him in a triple role of a dude father, his son who’s an introvert and Salman Khan, the star, who arrives where the duo is living for a film shoot,” reminisces Boney Kapoor, admitting that while on paper the comedy seemed like a great idea, it wasn’t turning out the way they had envisioned. Meanwhile, Prabhudheva had started filming Pokkiri, the Tamil version of Mahesh Babu’s 2006 Telugu blockbuster, Pokiri. Two actors from the Hindi film industry had seen the original and passed it over, but Prabhudheva believed it was the perfect film to bring Salman back into the action genre and urged Boney to see it before his Pokkiri released and someone else evinced interest in a Hindi remake. “So, one day, around midnight, Sri (his late actress-wife Sridevi), and I sat down to watch it together. We loved it, and with the then recently released Casino Royale showing James Bond engaged in hand-tohand combats, we believed it wouldn’t be long before the masala movies of yore, with lots of maar-dhaad, would return to the mainstream. Hoping to be one step ahead of the competition,
I coaxed Salman to see Pokiri,” the producer recounts. To their delight, the actor was equally impressed and Boney immediately air-dashed to Hyderabad to buy the rights from the Telugu film’s producer-director Puri Jagannadh. And Wanted happened! He is, however, quick to add that they had toyed with a number of titles before fixing onWanted, then, realised it was already registered with Firoz Nadiadwala. “So, we started looking for options, but ended up coming back toWanted. At one point, I had decided to call it Wanted: Dead or Alive. Fortunately, Firoz gave me what I wanted,” Boney chuckles. To play Salman’s leading lady several actresses, including two A-listers, were approached, but things didn’t work out. Ayesha Takia had impressed in Socha Na Tha and Boney had her in mind for a film he was planning with Salman and Saif Ali Khan on the lines of Alfred Hitchcock’s 1940 psychological thriller, Rebecca, with Nikkhil Advani. “Nikkhil got busy with Salaam-E-Ishq and that film didn’t happen, but I then signed Ayesha for Wanted,” he narrates. The film also introduced a new villain to Bollywood, Prakash Raj, who was already a big name in Tamil and Telugu cinema. He had done only a couple of Hindi films, including Boney’s Shakti: The Power, before this. So, Wanted was his big break. “I had approached some of the conventional villains, but they had issues with a particular scene where watching Salman decimate his entire army, Ghani Bhai wets his pants. We conveyed the ‘accident’ through sound, but they still objected to the scene. I pointed out that we used terms like ‘you will s**t in your pants’ or ‘p** in your pants’ in everyday conversation, but they were unconvinced. That scene got the maximum taalis in the theatres after the film’s release,” Boney beams, adding that they filmed Prakash Raj’s introduction and a few other scenes in Thailand. The song “Dil Leke” was shot in Greece. On the second day, Prabhudheva got the news that his son, who it was believed had recovered from cancer, had gone into remission and had to rush back to Chennai. His brother Raju Sundaram finished the song with Prabhudheva’s signature step. He also choreographed “Jalwa” while Vaibhavi Merchant did “Le Le Mazaa Le”. The film was shot over 208 days with Salman himself filming for around 165 days, in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Surve Farms near Pune and Binny Mills in Chennai. It released on September 18, 2009, and was applauded not just by the aam janta but also the critics. I remember, during an interview with Boney, both his phones were ringing non-stop, with distributors from across the country sharing box-office figures. Single screen theatres that had been on the verge of shutting shop got a new lease of life, with many exhibitors having to get new ‘Houseful’ boards to proudly display outside their cinemas. “I just wish we had got a ‘U/A’ instead of an ‘A’ certificate. Then, the business would have been double. I know many families went to see Wanted, then, on learning they couldn’t see it with their kids, bought tickets for Dil Bole Hadippa!, which opened on the same Friday,” Boney shares. Eleven years have passed, but Salman’s “Ek baar jo maine commitment kar di, toh main apne aap ki bhi nahin sunta” still resonates. “The script of No EntryMein Entry and the idea for a Wanted sequel are locked. Aur mera yeh commitment hai that I will make both films soon,” promises Boney.

a business proposal
Llinos initially met Salil - or Sal as he liked to be called - through what should have been a simple business transaction.  He represented his father’s business, a trade wide in the range of goods and services it offered.  His father, Firoz Durand, hailed from Thavnair but owned businesses in many places – Thanalan and La Noscea were among his Eorzean bases of operation.  It was accurate to call him a merchant prince.  He sold mercenaries, access to goods on his properties or through his alliances.  Most pertinent to their meeting were the goods and access valuable to alchemy.  Firoz got his start in alchemy and became well known for his quality associations with all things connected, after all he hailed from the land that birthed the art, but most importantly it provided him the means to extend his business.  He wasn’t content to be just a man who peddled wares, he sold connections, access, acting at times in the role of a banker which allowed him influence.  He was a man to know and get close to, regardless of the rumors that surrounded his family in their rise to power.  One couldn’t afford to pass up the opportunity for his acquaintance.  If he felt snubbed, he would ensure you experienced the same with contacts you used to have.  He could create such a knot in one’s relationships it would ruin you to untangle them. Firoz heard of Llinos’s fruitless visits to various alchemists in Ul’dah that she was in need.  Indeed, Llinos had taken leave from her work to address her increased fatigue from her aether sickness only to find little to alleviate the symptoms apart from extended rest.  Ever since the assassination attempt, wherein her guard Quintos had to use magicks to bring her back from the brink, she’d found herself easily enervated, making work difficult.  She was looking for a way to increase her tolerance or to decrease the fatigue or even nullify the symptoms altogether.  But nothing seemed to work and no one had leads.   She was nearly exhausting herself and her options.  She hardly expected to draw the notice of Firoz, but it wasn’t unwelcome.  It was a new avenue.  If any route were to provide new ideas, it would be through Firoz Durand.
He sent his son to negotiate terms for her, that she might make use of his connections and access.  Initially, Llinos thought nothing more of it.  Rumors were Firoz was unwell and as this was a minor business transaction he would have been unlikely to attend himself in any case.   The Dowager also told her of Sal.  He was a widower in his thirties and Firoz’s bastard son, and while he was favored, he was not an heir.  Sal was likely to get a nice inheritance and probably had his own foothold in his father’s business, but without his father’s name all the power would shift to someone else when Firoz died, probably a distant cousin. Firoz’s time was nearing an end, rumors told that his age was catching up with him and it was only a matter of time. There was no looking at Sal as a prospect.  The negotiations were to be carried on normally in one of the manse’s man vast rooms.  The Dowager took her seat at the head of the table to oversee, but it was Llinos that negotiated her own terms as she was accustomed.  It seemed to surprise Sal, he expected her to have someone else do it for her.  He had brought with him an adviser for his own part, though he hardly needed him.  Sal was sent to the finest schools where he focused in business and swordplay, but understandably he wasn’t knowledgeable in all the fields his father’s business covered, hence the assistant. “Well, Sal, I daresay my job is simpler than yours, I have fewer resources than you to offer but I know them well enough to know what value they possess.  Besides, this way I alone am accountable for my promises and so they are likely to mean more, wouldn’t you say?”  Llinos gave the man a coy, little grin, meant to disarm by appearing playful. She liked to see how seriously her opponents would take her. Sal returned her smile with a light chuckle.  “An honest businesswoman? How rare in nobility.  A rose in the dunes, as we would say back home.”  Sal preferred everyone to see him as Thavnairian, Llinos noted, true to the rumors spoken of him.  No one knew for sure the origin of his mother and he preferred it that way.  He stood out among others, with sandy waves of hair that fell to his shoulders, sun-kissed skin and sky-hued eyes.   His features were his mother’s mostly, but he tried to style himself like his father so that people only associated him with that, he even sported a beard like his father, albeit more neatly trimmed.  “I merely meant that most ladies I know have no interest in business and much prefer to be doing other things,” he continued, gently correcting his earlier surprise.  “I would not want to bore you upon first meeting you…no, I would much rather leave a more favorable impression on you, my lady.  You increasingly make it a challenge to live up to yours.” Llinos gave an indulgent giggle as she leaned forward on her elbows, resting her chin over laced fingers.  She held her impish smirk, eyelashes fluttering demurely.  “Give me a good deal and I’ll think the world of you.  I’m not so different from other ladies in that I love a good deal, but who doesn’t really?  But I like getting more involved because you really get to know a person by seeing how they negotiate.  It’s like dancing, isn’t it?  Will we step on each other’s toes or will be keep step with each other, Sal?”  She narrowed her eyes with the faint spark of a challenge.  “Will you leave me breathless by the end?”  She gave another soft giggle and sat up, resting her hands now on the parchment in front of her on the table.  “But enough banter, I do not wish to waste your time.  Your terms, please.” Sal continued to grin at her in that light, congenial amusement of his as he signaled for his man to place his written terms on the table.  Together they began the dance.   When Sal’s assistant started to speak up too frequently, Sal stepped forward as if to signal he alone would dance with Llinos in the negotiations.  Each time he would raise the price, Llinos would counter with a different offer.  He would ask for additional offerings, she would firmly hold her ground or counter again as she measured his steps, his willingness and stubbornness.  Part of negotiations was learning what each side had to offer, trying to tilt your hand the least, neither side gave up much while at the same times showing surprising resourcefulness.  Llinos knew when to offer something she hadn’t before and he knew when to do the same.  Carefully, they were inching towards middle ground. “I feel like you are holding back, Lady Llinos,” he grinned at her, his turn now to be coy, as he leaned his hands on the table.  He tried to spy what she was writing on her parchment, but she quickly shielded her notes, tossing him teasing look as she playfully held them to her chest. “I feel you are holding back, Sal.  I wish you wouldn’t.  I do so greatly admire a man who can fearlessly put all his cards on the table.  It shows a certain boldness and honesty.” “You would, it would make it easier for you to hold them all!”  He laughed. “You want to coax me?  Then tempt me.  I cannot pay for something you are not giving me.  We are willing to give you three quarters of what you ask but I cannot go higher.  There is precious little information out there for what I seek, so I must be careful about what I’m investing in.  You offer a few sources, if I’ll only have to invest more for extra later on then I need to be thrifty about it.  If this is all you have to offer, I’m being more than generous.” Sal stepped back from the table, pacing and running his hand over his beard as he took pause to mull a thought.  “You know…you’re right.  I am holding back.”  He sighed and turned to face her, hand now resting over his breast as he bowed.  “I have an offer in which you would not have to pay me at all…save what would be in your dowry.” Llinos felt her smile freeze in its place as she gaped widely, disoriented by his words.  Had she misheard?  Was he telling a joke?   She couldn’t tell. Thankfully, the Dowager stepped in so she needn’t embarrass herself or Sal. “Young ser, I do not think that an appropriate offer.  The Lady Llinos is entertaining many proposals and to dash all of that without proper consideration would be improper.  Not to mention, this is a matter that would require your own father’s blessing would it not, considering you are waging his business for your marriage?” “I realize this may seem unexpected and I understand your hesitation, Dowager, I am well aware my station provides certain…complications.   However, what if I were to tell you it might not be so…with your granddaughter’s hand?  She and I could both obtain what we want and it would please my father if such a thing occurred?” Llinos found herself exchanging glances with the Dowager, both women equally stunned silent and hesitant. Sal continued, “Lady Llinos, this is not the proper place to discuss such matters.  You’ve only just met me and I would hate for such a thing to be discussed over a business table.  May I have your permission to speak with you in a more appropriate setting…not as business, but as…a man trying to appeal to the heart of a remarkable woman?”  He looked apologetic along with hopeful as he awaited her reply. Llinos stole another look at the Dowager as if expecting the woman to answer for her, but she remained silent, letting Llinos speak for herself now.  Despite Sal saying otherwise, it was still a matter of business and seeing as the commodity now was herself it was even more pertinent that she hold the reins of such negotiation.  She took a breath to collect herself, dipping her gaze to look appropriately flattered as she gave her answer.  “You may.  It would be my honor to host you in our rose garden.  I shall have a lunch prepared and we may speak then.” Sal smiled and she returned it, hers more gentle and soft to his eager and optimistic grin.  She was trying, for all intents and purposes, to look pleasantly surprised and demure.  But Sal was watching her carefully, even if that smile never left his lips.  “You have nothing clever to quip, my lady?  After all our banter before, you’re not going to give me taunt about offering you something worthy?” She gave a weak laugh, trying to relent to his good nature.  “I’m afraid I must admit you’ve caught the upper hand one me.  I was not expecting this sort of proposal.” “Let us leave that intrigue where it is then, I’ve managed a small victory and that is enough.  Until our next meeting, Lady Llinos.”  He gave another refined bow, his assistant following suit, before leaving. The closing of the door behind them left such a heavy silence in the room after.  Her smile fell and a heavy, cold dread weighed in the pit of her stomach, keeping her seated.  It had been a pleasant while since she’d had to consider such an arrangement, she’d nearly forgotten the sensation.  The Dowager did not move either. “You don’t have to, Llinos.”  The lalafellan woman said quietly, not looking at her as she spoke but at the table instead. “He is the favored of Firoz, grandmama.  I must entertain all his offers.  He cannot make me take his hand if he cannot fulfill the arrangement to the full order it would require.  It’s like you said, Firoz has to approve of such a transaction.  I will discover whether he’s simply trying to make a power play or if this truly has Firoz’s blessing.  If it’s a bad deal, I counter offer and make him accept my terms.  If all Firoz wants is the opportunity for trade and nothing more, I need do no more.  No matter what Sal says, it’s still a business negotiation.” “What if Firoz did send him here for this proposal?” “Then,” Llinos paused, letting the words and their implication settle in.  She felt heavy from their weight but the gravity of it kept her thoughts in order.  There was simply no other way to look at it.  “It would be a viable option I cannot ignore.  Firoz Durand has connections that are very desirable, wealth, and a good deal of men at his disposal…”  Each word dug deep, they may as well have been nails hammered into a casket.  Each one sealing her in, locking her tightly. There was another pause shared between the women, then the Dowager slid off her chair and walked towards the door.  “Then may Nald’thal smile on your negotiations…and Menphina protect you.”

International payments provider Payza announced a partnership today with digital currency provider Dash that will integrate the cryptocurrency as a way for merchants and customers to send and receive payments.
Aside from local currencies, Payza until today only allowed users to exchange bitcoin, the world's most popular cryptocurrency at a market cap of $139 billion. As Bitcoin's popularity has fueled an interest in digital currencies, Payza added bitcoin payments in May and now the company is branching out into that market.
Dash started out as a project developed to allow instant and private transactions for the purposes of being a digital currency. Although its current name, Dash, is a portmanteau of -Digital Cash," its former name is Darkcoin. According to CoinMarketCap, Dash currently sees a daily trading volume of about $97.5 million and has a market cap approaching $3.3 billion.
Payza is headquartered in the U.K. but primarily serves Asia, the Middle East, Europe and South America with its focus on individuals and merchants underserved by central banking systems. By using mobile devices and a payment network built to provide rapid transactions and a wallet system, the company aims to deliver an alternative payment method.
The company serves more than 13 million users in 190 countries and offers access to more than 10,000 e-commerce retailers. Customers can exchange Bitcoin and Dash into 25 different local currencies as well.
-Payza is supporting underbanked populations in nearly 200 countries, and the Dash network's low-cost instant transactions are ideal attributes for meeting these customers' needs," said Ryan Taylor, chief executive of Dash. -Payza is also well-regarded in the industry, with literally millions of users, and they've thus far refrained from integrating other coins across their platform."
Firoz Patel, Payza's CEO, said that over the past few months, the company has seen a significant increase in demand for Dash. He cited Dash's low fees and the currency's own focus on helping underbanked communities.
Payza has been slow to approach and integrate cryptocurrencies into its platform. Although bitcoin is the most popular one in the world and has been touted as a potential way to assist communities underserved by central banks, such as Africa or Mexico, technical hurdles persist.
In the blockchain and cryptocurrency industry, unbanked customer audiences have long been a focus of businesses attempting to build into that niche. That includes efforts by financial services company Humaniq, which raised $5.2 million in a token crowdsale; Philippines-based remittance firm Coins.ph, which raised $5 million in venture capital; and cryptocurrency startup Bitt Inc. This is a very small list of companies that over the years have sought to build alternative payment networks for local and international use.
Customer understanding of the underlying currency could make or break its adoption at large and Payza said it wanted to focus on choosing currencies that would impact the lives of its users.
-There are several reasons that we chose Dash to be the second cryptocurrency integrated into our platform, after Bitcoin," said Patel. -Dash boasts low network fees and fast transactions, two features that users look for in a cryptocurrency. Dash also has a vibrant and active community, especially in the developing world, which appeals to us as a company that also focuses on empowering underbanked populations. Finally, Dash is user-friendly and has a roadmap in place to further improve usability."
To celebrate the launch of Dash, Payza has begun a limited-time promotion for users who fill their wallets with Dash using local currencies or Bitcoin. Users who buy Dash will get an extra 10 percent when they buy up to 1 Dash - which is currently priced at around $413 - and an extra 5 percent for purchases above that, up to 5 Dash.
The integration was made possible through infrastructure work done by blockchain web services provider BlockCypher Inc. The company builds blockchain-agnostic solutions designed to make it easier for businesses to adopt cryptocurrencies into their already existing networks.
Through Payza's partnership with BlockCypher, the company expects that it will be slowly integrating other popular cryptocurrencies. On Payza's blog, a company spokesperson said customers can expect announcements about full support for Litecoin and Ethereum, and the company is exploring other currencies as well.
