Discover Panchakarma: The Ancient Art of Ayurvedic Detoxification
In a world filled with daily stressors, environmental pollutants, and lifestyle imbalances, our bodies accumulate toxins—known in Ayurveda as Ama. Panchakarma, a time-honored Ayurvedic detoxification process, offers a holistic approach to cleansing the body and mind. Rooted in centuries-old wisdom, this therapy aims to restore harmony to the body’s vital energies—Vata, Pitta, and Kapha.
What is Panchakarma? The word Panchakarma translates to "Five Actions" in Sanskrit. These five actions are a set of therapeutic procedures designed to eliminate toxins and bring balance to the body’s internal systems. More than just a physical cleanse, Panchakarma nurtures mental clarity and emotional well-being, making it a comprehensive health rejuvenation method.
The Process Panchakarma is not a one-size-fits-all solution. It involves a series of personalized therapies based on an individual’s unique constitution and health condition. These therapies may include:
Abhyanga (therapeutic oil massage)
Shirodhara (oil pouring on the forehead)
Nasya (nasal cleansing)
Virechana (purgation)
Basti (medicated enema)
Each step works in synergy to cleanse, nourish, and balance the body and mind. The process typically begins with preparatory treatments to loosen toxins, followed by the main detoxification therapies, and concludes with rejuvenation practices to restore vitality.
The Purpose The ultimate goal of Panchakarma is holistic well-being. Its benefits include:
Improved digestion and metabolism
Elimination of toxins from tissues
Strengthened immune system
Rejuvenated energy levels
Enhanced mental clarity and emotional stability

Visiting a Graphic Design Studio
03/01/19
Today I went into Utrecht to visit my aunt and uncle in their graphic design studio. They rent a small office in an old converted school, where they run their business from. They showed me a project they’ve recently finished from its beginning stages to today, when it is officially being completed. My uncle Tiemen explained to me the debriefing process they go through with clients to discuss what they’re looking for. He told me how they discuss every aspect of the designs to gauge what direction they want to go in, and what it is they need. This includes detailed discussion on typography, concepts, colours (warm versus cold etc.), themes and keywords. Over the course of several meetings the themes are narrowed down to fit the specific needs of the client. Karina (my aunt) explained that they make lots of different things, including PowerPoint presentations, posters, banners, leaflets, business cards, typefaces, logos and wall displays, which all adds up to build a corporate identity. They also showed me paper and colour samples that they use for reference.
After speaking to them I feel really enthusiastic about graphic design, and it seems like something I could be good at. Additionally, graphic design allows for a lot more freedom than, say, illustration, because lots of mediums are available to you. This is something to consider since one of my concerns about illustration is that it might be quite limiting. The only issue is that it is largely computer based, so that would be something I might struggle with.

"Art Matters"

“Art Matters” Written by Neil Gaiman and Illustrated by Chris Riddel
“Without libraries we have no future and no past”
I asked for “Art Matters” for Christmas. It’s a collection of four short essays by Neil Gaiman on the topic of ideas, libraries, and art. Each page has an illustration by Chris Riddell that is based on or pertains to something in the text on that page. The combination of text and imagery really makes the essays more powerful, and accessible. The images are sketchy and loose- they look as though they’ve been done in pencil- and are quite messy with overlapping lines. This gives the impression that these drawings were done spontaneously and without practising beforehand
The final essay deals with the issue of “making good art”- and how to make art a career. This one elicits the biggest response from me, as I have a huge lack of confidence in my work.

Pallant House
07/12/18
After attending the open day at West Dean College, we went into Chichester to go to Pallant House Gallery. I was immediately really interested in Cathie Pilkington’s humanoid sculptures; they were grey, with wobbly limbs and extra faces on the backs of their heads. I liked how unsettling they were, and the way they were displayed- two rooms full of little doll-like sculptures, with interesting and subtle details, almost hidden unless you looked closely (for example, eyes sewn into the bed sheets).
The “Map of the Inner World” lithograph by Andrew Rae also attracted me. I liked it for its illustrative quality, and how full of personality it was. The main exhibition on at Pallant House was on Julian Trevelyan; the story of his life told through a selection of his work. I was especially charmed by an imaginary map he drew at the age of eight; it made me think of the things I used to do and took me back to my childhood.
I thought Trevelyan was amazing. Every piece was engaging for a different reason as the style varied so widely. The think my favourite was the oil painting “The Potteries, from 1938. I also like the suitcase full of paper scraps that he used to take with him to make collages outdoors.
I feel very inspired by the gallery visit, and I feel excited to go and make artwork, which I think is the ideal response to having visited an art gallery.

Petworth House
03/12/18
Today I visited Petworth House with mum, to see their Georgian Christmas exhibition (and to get me out of the house). I really enjoyed learning about the history of the place, and the house is really amazing, especially from outside. I really love going to places with so much history, and thinking about the people who have been there before me that I’ll never know anything about. We also saw a double rainbow as we left- the first one I’ve ever seen.
