November 27, 1923 The First Snow Is Nigh! [ Song Accompanist ]
Greetings, Albion, and welcome to the Sunday edition of the Albion Gazette! In the wake of Samhain, preparations for winter are being made in earnest throughout the valley.
A reading of tea leaves performed by the Greenhand Society portends a long winter, and first snowfall as early as midweek.
Ed. note. As a reminder, the valley pass will close once the ground is covered in snow and will not reopen until the spring thaw. Those with trade outside the valley ought to make plans this week to complete their business.
Inside the valley, here is what you ought to know:
Margam Books is hosting a workshop on leather-binding. Should you have a grimoire in need of tending, this evening workshop will be instrumental in the safe removal and replacement of leather covers. Tuesday, 7pm.
Due to the creeping aches in Mrs. Delaney Flory’s hands, Flory’s Bakery will be permanently shutting its doors after Yuletide. Inquiries for Yule cakes are accepted until December 15!
A group, led by Mr. Whitacre Gatlin and Mr. Roger Howell, will journey to the Northwood to hold the annual Lord of the Northwood contest -- and harvest firewood. Interested participants should contact M. Gatlin or M. Howell no later than Thursday. Spectators are enthusiastically welcome!
Albey’s Café has changed their menu. Handpies are now Cranberry-Orange and Gingerspice. The traveling cart was last seen at the corner of Abbott and Elm Street just after 8pm on Friday.
The cinema has been re-located to the blue barn at the crossroads of the South Road and Ramsey Lane. The Hunchback of Notre Dame will play at 7pm and 9:30pm on Friday & Saturday.
Spade had her kittens! Two calico, one mottled tortoiseshell, and two black little gems. They will be available for adoption after Midwinter Day. Visitors to the diner may see them in the side-room!
The Path of Stars will be holding a meeting at midnight of the first snowfall, in the cedar grove north of Albion proper. They ask for offerings of sugar-dust cookies and sage bundles to be brought by those interested in taking part.
Six bolts of cobalt corduroy were mistakenly delivered to Wolgemuth’s. Able hands are requested to turn the bolts into coats for Albion’s schoolchildren. A sewing circle will be taking place at Wolgemuth Hall later this week.
Mr. Andersson, the magistrate, would like to remind all to collect holly branches for your hearths. Red berries chained in garland bring good luck!
We will be back in two weeks to celebrate Midwinter Day, and the festival of Alban Arthan. Remember to brush out your white-wool coat!

London At Christmas TWENTY6 things to do and buy this festive season......
Tumblr media
London was the home of Dickens, so while in celebration of the birth of a baby some distance away (Bethlehem) many of the traditions we now enjoy were invented and entrenched in 19th Century London. Mr Scrooge awoke on Christmas morning to discover the joys of Christmas so join us on our London journey and let’s “Party like it’s 1899!!!” NOT TO MISS …… on every Wednesday on the run up to Christmas Columbia Road Flower Market opens up for mulled wine and Carols …  all the independent shops are open late and mulled wine is available on every corner.  Follow the old Joanna (piano) on the barrow up the street and sing-along with the Christmas Carols lead by local Vicar Adam Atkinson, raising money for local charities whilst offering up a real slice of the old East End.  What a Cockney “knees up” “ding-dong sing along”……. “All that glitters is not gold” but for the most brilliant festive glitter head to Marks and Spencers and grab a bottle of their Clementine Gin Snow Globe. Twenty6 Christmas Cocktail Recipe” ….. 20% Clementine Gin, 10% Grand Marnier, 50% Prosecco, 20% Soda Water Sparkle and luxury can be found in the fabulous Burlington Arcade. It’s the perfect Christmas cut-through from Bond Street to Piccadilly. Perfectly placed between Cartier and Fortnum & Mason, this has so much glamour. Celebrating its 200th Anniversary, having opened in March 1819, luxury leather goods, cashmere, new and antique jewelry, this is real old time elegance, and do drop into Laduree for your macaroons, a hair cut at  Atkinsons or a shoe shine. Enter one end and pop out the other polished, buffed and groomed. “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” and other Carols ….  Enjoy a service in one of the historical Abbey’s or Cathedrals this Christmas. Many hold services to raise funds for homeless charities.  Check with each one to see what and when their services are. Visit the Antiques Market at the historic Spitalfields’ Market.  Held every Thursday during the year, there remains a very 19th Century feel to this market. Find something totally unique; everything from an 18th Century teapot from Andrew Coram or pre-owned Dior Earrings….. it’s a wonderful place to wander and soak up the atmosphere whilst “hooking a bargain”. Take time to write to those you see seldom, an actual card cannot be replaced by any digital alternative, spend an afternoon catching up with old friends, its so worth the investment, any post these days that’s not a bill is such a pleasure. Charity cards available widely from many outlets. “We Three Kings of Orient Are”; we don’t expect you travel to the Orient but the Kings Road hosts its own Christmas Bazaar on the 7th December, horse carriage rides and chestnuts roasting bring festive cheer to this very glamorous corner of town. Afternoon tea is a tradition not to be forgotten at this time of year, a real treat, all the fine hotels do fabulous afternoon teas; The Ritz,  Claridge’s  and if you need a venue where doggy friends are welcome, book the wonderful drawing room at The Lanesborough, ….. for afternoon tea  (or champagne), assorted sandwiches and an irresistible selection of cakes, the diet starts in January …….
Is Santa coming down your Chimney? We love Santa visiting, but also it’s fabulous to make sure he visits your nearest and dearest. Scented candles that make your home feel luxurious, “Jo Loves’ Christmas Candle” is the very essence of Christmas, with fresh pine, wood smoke and a hint of plum pudding. YUM. Oh and don’t forget to re-purpose the holder next year into a bulb holder for your Christmas hyacinths. The White Company has also captured the scent of Christmas, try either the Old Fashioned with a smooth mix of zest of orange and amber whiskey, warm and familiar; or their Classic Winter Warmer with spices of cinnamon, clove and orange. It’s like Santa just left the room…… Personalised presents are always extra special. It’s fabulous to get your bedding all up close and personal with Stranos Linen of London, pillow cases or full sets, pure luxury just for the ones you love, rest your head everyday on love and luxury. Something not just for the 12 days of Christmas but 365 days of the year.
We love stationery, “Thank you notes” (always so handy to write to say thank you for your wonderful Christmas prezzies) personalised notelets, or for the most traditional among us a set of writing paper and envelopes.  Useful, beautiful and personal. Win win win. Check out Smythson or Wren Press . Everyone wants to smell nice……. So many options but so very personal, it’s a minefield choosing fragrances.  I personally love the joyful experience of entering and inhaling the perfumed interior of Floris in Jermyn Street, W1, with its gorgeous interior as exhibited at the 1851 Exhibition.  Santa Maria Novella, 117 Walton Street, SW3, or the Piccadilly Arcade  it’s like shopping in the 19th Century, huge range of scents and lotions, the pomegranate terracotta room diffuser, literally lasts for years…. Pure class. Make your own Christmas wreath. I’m never one to take work away from a good florist, but a wreath making course with a few chums is a real hoot and you take away something to show off to your neighbours;  a really fun few hours and once you know how it’s a gift that comes in handy year on year……. There are courses at Fortnum and Masons, Petersham Nurseries and Columbia Creative. Prices from £50 I am a huge fan of the Christmas Shopping Trip. A genuine trip to shop and not just clicking and collecting. This gives you the chance to enjoy the festive lights and experience a wander, make this Christmas old fashioned and take a day to shop with your best friend(s). Our Historic Christmas route to take in the lights, smells and tastes of Christmas. Stroll around St Christophers Place, South Molton Street, Old Bond Street, Burlington Arcade, Piccadilly Arcade. You will cover everything from Selfridges, Fortnum and Mason, the perfumers mentioned above, plus many more… For the perfect pit-stop and refuel, try Franco’s in Jermyn Street. It’s perfectly placed in the epicenter of the shopping district. Literally the best lasagna in London. Its classical elegance is like a step back in time; it’s the perfect spot on your Christmas shopping day out, perfect for lunch, early supper or a night out (BOOK!) 13th December is “Save the Children Christmas Jumper Day”. Wear your jumper with pride and give generously click here! Pantos and HO HO HO…. There are many options of live shows, Sandi Toksvig is hosting a Carol Sing A-long at the Globe theatre;  the Christmas Tree in St Paul’s Cathedral, is illuminated on the 22nd December, and for the off beat check out Wiltons Music Hall, or the Hackney Empire for their festive fare. Check on line what’s on. Chelsea Christmas Lights Switch on is the 23rd of November, Christmas with illuminated Sloane Square, Sloane Street and Duke of York’s Square. Celebrations start at 2pm in Sloane Square with Carols and entertainment, with the lights to be turned on at 5pm. Christmas Candlelit suppers... Petersham Nurseries are running a number of lovely evenings,  6th, 12th, 19th and 20th December.  Reservations on 0208 332 8665. Amazing atmosphere and wonderful food. Also take a peek at the Christmas decorations…… Don’t break a leg, but take a spin around the skating rinks that pop up, Somerset House, The Natural History Museum, Hampton Court Palace,  wonderful surrounds…. Have go or just have a drink and watch. Its My Birthday - just saying……… Have a wonderful Festive Season, eat drink and be Merry……. And in the famous last lines of “Twas the Night Before Christmas” ….. “But I heard him exclaim as he drove out of sight”, “Happy to Christmas to All and to All a good night”. Words by Andrew Downs

Eight Cheese Trends to Watch in 2019
Let’s be clear: The most important trend for 2019 (and always) is eating delicious cheese, whenever and however you darn well please.
But if you’re craving cheesy inspiration for the year ahead, we’re here for you. Behold, the eight biggest cheese trends of 2019.
Hot Cheese
The hottest cheese trend of 2019? Hot, melty cheese! You’ve seen the raclette videos on social media. Now it’s time to take the melt one step further. Look for khachapuri, the Georgian bread boat filled with melted cheese, at Georgian restaurants and recipe blogs. And have you tried aligot, the dreamy, cheesy potatoes from central France?
NYC is home to several stellar Georgian restaurants. If you can’t find khachapuri or aligot near you, why not make your own hot cheesy goodness? The new book “Melt, Stretch, & Sizzle” will get you there in no time.
Clothbound Cheddars
Cheddar isn’t just the orange stuff that you melt on nachos, friends! A major cheese trend to look for in 2019 is clothbounds, the big guns of the cheddar family.
Clothbound cheddars are made in a slower, more traditional way, and their cloth rind allows the wheels to age for longer, gaining complexity as they go. U.K. versions like Mrs. Quicke’s, Montgomery’s, or Isle of Mull are beefier and more horseradishy, whereas America-made Shelburne Farms Clothbound, Fiscalini Bandage Wrapped, or Flory’s Truckle tend to be more nutty and chicken brothy. The cloth rind is usually adhered to the cheese with a bit of butter or lard; Caputo’s, a label from Utah, uses duck fat on its clothbound.

Marinated Fresh Cheese
Not only does marinated cheese look gorgeous in a colorful bowl on your cheese plate, it also offers zippy freshness that will delight even your pickiest guests. Aussies have been enjoying marinated feta for years — and, luckily, their incredible Meredith Dairy Feta is available stateside.
There are excellent American-made versions as well. California’s iconic goat cheese maker Laura Chenel has a line of Marinated Cabecou, including spicy and truffled options. The new Chevoo, also out of California, has a lovely lineup including dill pollen and garlic, Urfa chili and lemon, and, yes, an Italian black truffle flavor as well. Or, you can choose your own combinations when you make it yourself at home!

I Can’t Believe it’s Brie
In the U.S., we’re used to Brie and Brie-style cheeses tasting like butter and white mushrooms. But what about broccoli and garlic? Or mustard and sautéed wild mushrooms?
There’s nothing wrong with your basic buttery Brie, but trends are moving toward French preferences for bloomy rind cheeses with more personality. Look for Brie Fermier from Ferme de Jouvence, Harbison from Jasper Hill, or Weybridge from Scholten Farm. Serve with charcuterie and crusty bread and never look back.
And if any of your friends question your new, funkier choices, just give them a withering look and say, “This is how the French prefer their Brie.”
Gruyère and Her Sisters
We all know and love Gruyère, but why stop there? Gruyère is just one of what cheese people call “Alpine Style” cheeses, which have firm rinds, smooth pastes, and signature nuttiness. Impress your cheesemonger and delight your palate by trying one of Gruyère’s cooler cousins. Better still, they all melt like a dream.
Comté is a balanced and classic French cheese made in the Jura. L’Etivaz is only made in the summertime in Switzerland, when cows can feast upon mountain pastures, resulting in a beautiful and bonkers array of flavors. The fruity and stunning Pleasant Ridge Reserve is made in Wisconsin and is the most-award-winning cheese in American history.

Gjetost
Pronounced: “Yeh-Toast” Flavors: Caramel, butterscotch, and more caramel Eat: Right now, and forevermore.
Rather than throwing out the leftover whey from cheesemaking, those genius Norwegians reduce it down until it becomes this wonderful sticky treat. Gjetost, which just means “goat cheese,” is in the “brunost” or “brown cheese” family, which is typically served in thin slices at breakfast with coffee, or during the December holidays with spiced fruit cake. We like it on a brunch cheese board, especially paired with apple slices.
If you’re still not convinced, you should probably know that the inventor of modern-day gjetost won the Norwegian Medal of Honor for her creation. Yeah. It’s that good.

Unconventional Pairings
We’re never going to tell you that pairing cheese with your favorite wine and some water crackers is wrong. But some pairings that you may have thought were frowned upon are not only right, but real trendy right now.
Why not use chocolate as a cracker for your aged gouda instead of boring old baked grains? Potato chips are surprisingly wonderful to dip into your favorite gooey cheese, and gummy peach rings go weirdly well with fresh chèvre. Use your imagination!
Butter is the Best Cheese
O.K., so this one isn’t technically cheese, but while you’re serving your handpicked cheeses and fresh baguette, why not up your dairy game with some cultured butter? By “cultured,” we mean butter with cheese cultures added, which lend a light zip and beautiful layered richness. Look for anything from Ploughgate, Vermont Creamery, or the classic Rodolphe le Meunier.
Warning: Once you’ve tried butters like these, you’ll never go back to your old spread.

The Royal Floris Cakes  / A királyi FLORIS torták - God Save the King !
The FLORIS family living in London are the only ones who, as Hungarians, have ever received the Royal Warrant, the title of official supplier of the British Royal family, and were able to use the "Royal Arms" or the royal coat of arms during their business activities. The FLORIS family, both from the Queen Mother (George VI's wife, the Duchess of York) and the reigning II. He received the Royal Warrant from Queen Elizabeth. The royal coats of arms were also used on the exterior of the Floris confectionery and bakery at 24 Brewer, London. In addition to these, the FLORIS company made the birthday cakes of Prime Minister Winston Churchill and his family for nearly twenty years. Erzsébet királynőtől megkapta a Királyi Végzést. A londoni Brewer 24. szám alatti Floris cukrászda és pékség külső megjelenésén használták is a királyi címereket. Ezeken túl a FLORIS cég készítette közel húsz éven keresztül Winston Churchill miniszterelnök és családja születésnapi tortáit. - - - 🇬🇧 🇭🇺 More FLORIS stories here / További FLORIS történetek itt: the BOOK of  FLORIS – Haszon Gábor© Kutatási-Napló® #bonbonnerie #LoveLondon #soho #IIICharlesKing #IIIKároly #Florisbonbon #Florisbakery #Florischocolate #FlorisChocolat #FlorisLondon #KingCharlesIII #TheHouseofFloris #Budapest #londonhistory #FlorisBudapest #Budapest #London #Berlin #FlorisBook #FLORIS #TheBookofFloris #TheCoronationofKingCharlesIII

when there is no line between fantasy and reality.
“April 3rd. All Cary Street is burnt, and Main Street is on fire, it is spreading rapidly; almost every minute that Flory and I run out to the gate to see if the Yankees are coming…” was written by Frances Calderon de la Barca Hunt on her diary during the American Civil War in 1865 in Richmond, Virginia. Nothing can describe the depth of her sadness to become an eyewitness to such catastrophic event… she was just fourteen years old. Many children encountered hardships and violence that forced them to grow up quickly amidst a nation at war itself –– “I was ten years old today, I didn’t wish to have a birthday cake,” mourned by Carrie Berry, “I just hoped to have peace in our land.” Her childhood had apparently slipped away. A few sentences from her had included an overstepped experience that general children at this age would never be able to understand profoundly. Did violence make children mentally stronger? The answer is worth thinking about. It is true that some children were ready to fight, ready to help people, ready to grow up, and ready to face the truth, but some were not. “The world is built by thought,” said by Rudolf Steiner who was an Austrian philosopher. He claimed that children experience things as a living and create a form of life based on what they think and question. Nevertheless, children are still children, even though some of their minds grow faster than they should, reality and fantasy are still too difficult to differentiate for them. Dolls during the war were happened not to mainly entertain but to distract children from the violent conflicts. A medium that allows children to learn how to love, to care, and to have feelings. According to Jean Piaget, a Swiss psychologist, children may behave toward dolls as if they were real persons; set up scenarios and entertained themselves. Unawarely, children used them to make sense of the world around them, used doll-play scenario as a narrative device to piece “real” information through “imaginative” screens. The behavior of adults, the surrounding emotions, words, images, are integrated into doll-play which reflects the adult world. It reminded me of when I was in the elementary school; I cannot remember the exact age, but what I always remember is I did not like my teachers so much. They hit me with rulers when I answered their questions wrong. But really, did this solve the problem? I was not brave enough to tell my parents what happened but instead, I set up a classroom in my bedroom, all my dolls were students, and I hit them just like the way teachers hit me. I didn’t tell my parents the truth, never asked my teachers why, and by ignoring the unacceptable punishment, it didn’t mean I was strong, but fear and incomprehensibility controlled me to reflect my emotions and thoughts into the form of doll-play scenarios which made my parents thought that I just had fun playing around. “Josephine and her dolls,” a book which was written by Mrs. H.C. Cradock from 1916, was the first book for children to address war from a child’s perspective. The character Josephine was very innocent and raised during the World War I. All friends she had were a bunch of dolls to play with. She named one of them Sunny Jim who needed to go off to the war for protecting his family. She hid Jim in the closet as he left his family to serve and she didn’t plan to bring him out of the closet. Then she started to cry along with the other dolls. Who knows? Jim may be her father who had gone for military and never come back to see her face again. Dolls are more than what adults think. They are innocent, belong to children. Dolls are their friends, are a part of their families. Dolls are the “connection” between fantasy and reality. Dolls are something “alive,” which give children motivation, inspiration, and accessibility to understand the world.

INTRODUCING LOCATIONS IN + AROUND ALBION → PART ONE
FLORY'S BAKERY Step inside the lattice door of Flory's Bakery and be immediately greeted by cardamom, cinnamon, and chocolate. Each day, Delaney Flory posts a list of the day's specials, from apple-baked handpies to marzipan and honey petit fours, each cake and treat is baked with heart. When medicine and wishing just won't do, try Flory's for all of your intention-setting needs.
ANDERSSON BOATHOUSE Several miles south of Albion proper, Andersson Boathouse is a creaky, old building resting along the banks of the Macinbride River. It houses several canoes, rowboats, and fishing boats and up to five sailboats annually. Though time has aged the boathouse considerably, it is still the most reputable place to anchor. At night, the winding banks of the river are lit up in greens and golds, to help even the most hapless of sailors find their way.
MARGAM BOOKS CO. Through an arched doorway, one is immediately greeted with the scent of paper and ink. Margam Books Company offers books for reading -- and for writing. Through the printing press upon their second floor, they are also a limited-run publisher -- and the print house for the Albion Gazette -- out twice a month! Should you wish to find the Howell Family Apple Library, or a copy of Heathcote's Grimoire, Margam Books Company is the place to start.
