Daniel Dunlevy’s second album comes six years after the first, which was entitled “But That’s the Thing.” In 2023, Dan describes his naïve debut as having been rife with inflated expectations. Now, he’s a little older, a little wiser, and a touch more cynical.

“Hoping For A Pyramid” is the new album that just hit Spotify on the 10th of February. The name alludes to the lofty goals of youth – and the inevitable disappointments that succeed them.

When Daniel recruited me to create the cover art, he had a vision. He supplied me with a photo of a sculpture that exists in Fort Lauderdale, Florida: The original statue by Daniel Popper is called “Thrive” and depicts the torso and bust of a woman holding her chest cavity open, with ferns hanging inside and moss growing on parts of the outside. Since there are many cracks on the sculpture’s concrete exterior, Dunlevy chose to use this image to represent the album’s theme of imperfection. He asked me to isolate the statue, remove the greenery, and, if possible, portray a beam of light emitting from the chest to represent the honest voice of Dunlevy’s songs.

I used Adobe Photoshop to trace the silhouette and delete the background. The particular photograph we were authorised to use was cropped, so I had to visualise extensions to the left, right and top, and create those additions. I used the clone stamp tool and others to create a lock of hair, the edges of the shoulder and upper arm on the left side (left of the image, which would be the stone woman’s right), and the hand on the other. Hands are notoriously difficult to draw, but in this case, the texture of the stone seemed easier to emulate than flesh. I was quite pleased with what I was able to produce, but then, of course, the next step obscured my handiwork. I found a starburst png that could be manipulated to fit in the space and match the musician’s vision for the projection of light. I separated the sculpture into layers based on depth and placed the partial-opacity lightburst between them; in this way, the side of the chest cavity closest to the viewer would occlude the light source while the beams shot out in front of the other side.

After the core image was edited and approved by Daniel, I used Adobe Illustrator to design several options for the final cover art. Daniel Dunlevy, his band, his manager, and a few close friends were polled on their favourite iterations. The end design for the album cover of “Hoping For A Pyramid” features the meticulously adjusted female statue with split beams of white-gold light erupting from the heart, laid in the foreground over a monochromatic star-riddled galactic sky, with the album title and artist’s name at the top centre and bottom right, respectively.

I was in Fort Lauderdale this Monday and came across this beautiful sculpture that caught my attention. It was in a unique spot as it was not really in a busy area more of quiet non busy area. Upon research I discovered the name of this sculpture is "Thrive" and artist who sculpted it was Daniel Popper. His message behind this sculpting was to be a symbol of hope, transformation and women empowerment. The sculpture is of a women with her chest open which is inspiring transformation within women and the community because the city in which it is built in values gender diversity. This speaks to which values and morals as they deem women empowerment important because they chose to let the artist turn his dream sculpture into a reality. The subject of the sculpture is to inspire change and hope within women as well as empower them. The morals the sculpture hoped to inspire is, establishing gender equality, influence social change, and promote women's self worth. The sculptures explicit purpose is to inspire hope, the women is holding on to her chest while exposing her heart, she is made with tough rock solid material on the outside but the passage way inside reveals that on the inside she is made up of a green interior garden. This symbolizes women empowerment because it shows that women as society defines, can be the more "emotional" or "kind hearted" gender but women are hard and just as tough or equipped and strong as men doesn't matter the gender roles society has put on women.

For dinner, my partner and I began our meal with the Ahi Tuna Tartare as well as a Crab & Lobster cake. Both items were melt-in-your-mouth delicious. The tuna especially was so fresh and was accompanied by a citrus-ginger soy sauce with house-made potato chips. The entrees were just as special. The Seafood Risotto was creamy and perfectly cooked, served with lobster, scallops, and shrimp. It is a bit heavy so I would recommend sharing this dish with a guest. The Cedar Plank Salmon was a favorite, served with a Vermont maple syrup-soy glaze, stir-fried grains, sweet peas, and corn.

For those seeking relaxation, the Pelican Grand offers a full-service spa where guests can indulge in a range of rejuvenating treatments. The oceanfront pool provides a refreshing oasis, surrounded by lush landscaping and comfortable loungers. Our knowledgeable and friendly guide led us on a two-hour tour of Wilton Manors, snaking us through mangroves on the Middle River. Although we chose to kayak, the company offers paddleboards as well as private lessons for those who may not have tried paddleboarding. It is a fun alternative to kayaking and a great core workout.

After your tour, head to The House on the River for a wonderful riverside dinner. Start your meal with an order of Crispy Brussels Sprouts prepared with avocado honey and balsamic. This was one of my favorite takes on Brussels sprouts I have ever had. Needless to say, the plate was wiped clean. For our entrees, we ordered the Snapper Filet and Shrimp & Crab Squid Ink Tagliatelle. Both items were prepared beautifully, although I did favor the snapper over the pasta. The House on the River is located just off downtown Fort Lauderdale’s famed Las Olas Boulevard and within walking distance of the Broward Performing Arts Center, so it is the perfect place to catch dinner before a show.

Fort Lauderdale never disappoints. The destination offers something for everyone. Whether you are looking for some fun in the sun or reveling in LGBTQ nightlife in nearby Wilton Manors, Fort Lauderdale has it all.

"Thrive" by  Daniel Popper a Cape Town Africa artist. A fiberglass reinforced concrete sculpture that stands at a 27' tall and weighing around 14 tons and was completed in 2020. The piece which is in Fort Lauderdale depicts a female opening her chest at heart level revealing her green inside. The sculpture is round in that it depicts a female form and it brings out the volume and the density of the meaning of the piece. It does a great job of portraying an image of her internal bodily awareness as related to surrounding space and how it is grounded in earth surrounding her.

I believe that the piece is meant to symbolize a torn down soul who's heart aches for Mother Earth and for her people who have endured a great deal of struggle. Just as the Corona Virus pandemic changed all of our lives forever and Environmental concerns have been raised in politics this peace reminds her visitors to look within her and remember that life thrives from within. The surface of the sculpture appears to be worn by the elements and shattered by many bad times. This piece does a good job in showing a truth to the medium or material and looks natural. Although this piece is in a public place it adds a lot of feeling to the space and serves as a focal point where there wouldn't have been one before. "Thrive" stands in solidarity with all of us in that she is worn down but reminds us all by bearing her thriving insides; that there is hope for our Earth and all of her inhabitants.

A giant phallus may be coming to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and if that happens, we’ll have Jesus and an atheist to thank.

A couple of months ago, the city hosted a Christmas tree lighting ceremony as well as a Menorah Lighting Celebration.  Those were religious celebrations promoted by government officials, suggesting that the public square was open to anyone who wanted to host a similar event.

Enter Chaz Stevens, a local activist known for seeing an opening and driving a monster truck through it. He asked the city earlier this month for permission to host an event of his own on April 2 in honor of Kanamara Matsuri, the Shinto “Festival of the Steel Phallus.”

The centerpiece of that event would be a 300-pound, six-foot-tall pink penis.

Aujourd’hui, c’était le grand jour: le nouveau climatiseur a enfin été livré et installé, et nous allons enfin pouvoir dormir confortablement. Enfin, pour deux nuits puisque les 24 et 25 décembre s’annoncent plutôt frisquets; le climatiseur ne sera probablement plus nécessaire pour quelques temps. Puisqu’une présence était nécessaire au condo pendant l’installation, papa est demeuré sur place pendant que maman et moi avons passé la journée dans les environs en parcourant une partie de Fort Lauderdale à pied. Nous avons descendu le boulevard Las Olas en explorant les rues et canaux des innombrables îles de cette Venise américaine, admirant les maisons de grand luxe que l’on trouve de part et d’autre. Ici, les palmiers se trouvent en nombre incalculable, et chaque maison semble être associée à un bateau de luxe (photos 1 à 6). Nous avons également croisé une impressionnante sculpture de Daniel Popper, intitulée Thrive, tout juste installée en 2020 (photo 7). Nous nous sommes arrêtés pour le lunch près de la plage sur la terrasse d’un restaurant; on nous a dit que c’était le “Happy Hour” et que les cocktails étaient offerts à deux pour un. Maman a choisi le margarita, et j’ai opté pour la sangria. Ceux-ci sont arrivés rapidement: deux IMMENSES verres qui devaient contenir entre un et deux litres de cocktail chacun!!! Nous avons bien rigolé devant la taille démesurée de nos verres. Je précise que nous n’avons pas tout bu… :) Enfin, on a terminé la journée le long de l’immense plage (photos 8 à 10).

Daniel Popper, a Cape Town-based artist, is well-known for his towering culptures of human beings covered with or perforated by dense canopies of flora. His most recent work, Thrive, is approximately 30 feet tall and is made of 14 tonnes of glass fibre reinforced concrete. The artwork was just inaugurated at Society Las Olas, a Fort Lauderdale residential development, and will serve as a permanent public art project on the bottom level. This public art work gave me the impression that the sculpture was alive and vibrant. The use of women as the sculpture's protagonist reminds me of the notion of "Mother Earth," in which the environment is tolerant and the land is compassionate. I'm considering the spiritual meaning of public art, which may be tolerant and can soften concrete.
