The fight to keep invasive mussels from damaging B.C. lakes and waterways got some financial support this week, but it falls short of what’s needed, officials say.

On Tuesday it was announced that BC Hydro is supporting the province’s Invasive Mussel Defence Program with a new five-year commitment of annual funding of $900,000 beginning in 2024.

The BC Wildlife Federation, Pacific Salmon Foundation and Habitat Conservation Trust Foundation are also providing a collective contribution of $150,000.

These investments join the province’s core funding and the ongoing contributions provided by the program’s founding partners, which include the Columbia Basin Trust, Columbia Power and FortisBC. [...]

The fossil fuel industry has long understood the power of the school system in shaping perceptions around climate change

Last fall, a seven-year-old elementary-school student in British Columbia brought a worksheet on physical and chemical matter home from class. His mother was shocked when she saw it. The worksheet came from a lesson plan created by FortisBC, a utility company that delivers natural gas and electricity to much of the province. Since 2017, the company has made ready-to-use lesson plans like this one—about climate change, energy conservation, natural-gas safety—freely available to teachers in the province to use in their classrooms. According to the company, as of 2020, more than 2,000 teachers had downloaded lesson materials from the company’s educational-program website.

Tax increases are expected in April, making it more expensive to fill up vehicles and pay for alcohol in BC. The carbon tax will increase by three cents per litre of gasoline, bringing the total to 14.31 cents.

People in Vancouver already pay 38 cents per liter in provincial taxes, which will increase due to the upcoming increase. This means that every liter of gas will rise by 3 cents for every $15 per tonne increase each year until it reaches $170 in 2030.

Canadians will pay slightly more for liquor due to an annual excise tax adjustment due to inflation. This year's increase is only to the tax itself, not the entire cost of the product.

FortisBC has received approval from the BC Utilities Commission to decrease the cost of gas rate for all customers as of April 1, 2023, from 5.159 per gigajoule to 4.159.

BC Hydro customers could receive a decrease of 2% pending Commission approval, providing extra cash to offset global inflation. The upcoming BC Affordability Credit payment in April will provide as much as $164 per adult and $41 per child, or approximately $410 for a family with two children.

85% of British Columbians will receive an additional full or partial payment as early as April 5, 2023, similar to January’s BC Affordability Credit.

British Columbians eligible for the credit will receive it automatically.
