Friedrich Cerha – Eine Art Chansons, CD, Kairos (Austria)

A collection of short, elliptical and ironical songs by Austrian composer Friedrich Cerha, born 1926, known for his uncomprising avantgarde instrumental music, especially the Spiegel I–VIII cycle (1972) and for completing a performable version of Alban Berg's Lulu opera in 1961.

Consisting of between 30s to 2mn-long songs with a few instrumental interludes, Eine Art Chansons, completed in 1988, is an homage to The Vienna Group (HC Hartmann, Konrad Bayer, Gerhard Rühm, Oswald Wiener), an Austrian avantgarde collective active between 1954-1960 doing concrete poetry, collages, DADA theater, Fluxus performances – among which the "Literarisches Cabaret" (1958-59) was a direct influence on Cerha who attended some of these events. Most texts in Eine Art Chansons come from Vienna Group members Gerhard Rühm and Ernst Jandl, and are written for a minimalist ensemble of voice, marimba, piano and double bass.

The malleable voice of Austrian composer/singer HK Gruber –influenced by Hanns Eisler and Ernst Busch songs, Austrian Possenlied and cabaret song– is a perfect match to the reading, sprechgesang and vocal acrobatics devised by Cerha for the concrete poetry, onomatopeia, Vienna slang and general nonsense written by Jandl and Rühm.
