I can’t get over how much I just absolutely adore the casting choice of Fukujūrō Katayama as adult Daisuke. All the aged-up Adventure voices are good. I don’t think there are any I dislike. But Daisuke is a character I have a lot of strong feelings for, and he’s hands down the character I was set to be most picky about, but Katayama? Just totally, absolutely fucking nails his performance. He sounds exactly like you’d expect an adult Daisuke to sound, and not just incidentally. Not just because his voice suits. Listening to his take on the character, you can tell he intentionally copies Kiuchi Reiko’s original performance, and it makes me so giddy especially when listening to Daisuke’s character songs side by side.

to Fukujūrō Katayama’s “Running Man”

There’s no way Katayama didn’t listen to Kiuchi’s performance and intentionally replicate her. It’s the wide-spread vowels; the high-pitched sort of nasal whines they both do. And it’s not just while singing either. Kiuchi gave Daisuke his voice, with all its quirks and charm, and the role wasn’t going to be a legacy easily carried. Honestly, I was ready for the new actor to fall short. 

But then they released the names of the 02 cast. I saw Katayama’s ridiculously short list or roles. I watched him as Peco in Ping Pong the Animation (which is amazing, btw) and thought “Holy crap, he could work”. He already had the base, but he added those little characteristics, those vocal flavors from Kiuchi, and he blew it out of the water. 

It just... makes me so happy.

Everybody sounds great, but I fall more and more in love with Fukujuurou Katayama as Daisuke every time I hear him. (Kiuchi Reiko is a tough act to follow, but he’s doing it and damn well!)
