So my partner and I are long-distance and I'm waiting for her to get back to her collage dorm before mailing her Christmas gift because one of the things I bought hasn't shipped yet. That being said, I got really bored and wanted to do something funny/stupid

Monday, September 16 - Bakawari Island, Autonomous region of Bougainville, PNG

Happy Papua New Guinea Independence Day (their 49th)! We had a great morning on Bakawari Island, which is just off the bigger island of Bougainville. Although they are an "autonomous" region, and there have been recent rumblings of trying to break from PNG, they were still celebrating.
The small village we visited had a lot of visitors from the mainland for the cultural performance of singing, dancing, and playing the pan pipes, which are more typical of the Solomon Islands. We were on one of the earlier Zodiacs, and had about an hour to kill before the performance, so went off birding with Joe. It was so nice to be in the shade and see so many new species (for us), that we decided we had seen enough dancing, etc., and continued to just hang out wandering around the forest edge. We could hear the performance, which sounded similar to previous, and finally headed down to the beach to do some snorkeling before everyone else arrived.
While I was snorkeling, Russ befriended some of the local kids - showing them how to use binoculars, and emphasizing staying in school. I talked at length to one of the local ladies who was helping out near the snorkel site, and she said she was a bit sad that her children have left their town on Bougainville, but that all four of her children have gotten college degrees in technical fields and are doing well. Once again, the mothers seem to be behind the kids getting a good education.
Although I had low expectations for the snorkeling, since it was from a beach near a village, it was surprisingly good. I saw a group of about fifteen squid interacting with one another, and a very interesting sponge (I know -what could be interesting about a sponge, but it looked like a little volcano), and what are called Christmas tree worms. Lots of fish, too, and the time went too fast, as usual.
We were all back on the ship by 12:30, as it will take the afternoon and tomorrow morning before we reach Honiara. We were greeted in our suite with a "Zipline" in the bathroom (there was also a sign) - Nolly, our suite host, has been extremely creative!
We spent the afternoon having a tour of the bridge (open hours, so it was just us up there), and then the first "name that tune" contest of our voyage so far. We didn't win, but we came close enough not to disgrace ourselves. We had our second "hosted" table in a row at dinner - we wound up sitting with one of our kayak guides and several people we had already met, but were hoping to have dinner with at some time, so it was a fun evening.
We also had an edition of Liars Club, with several new "liars". It was especially funny since Isaac, from the expedition team, told elaborate stories with lots of puns before getting to his definitions. I actually knew two of the words, but unfortunately so did everyone else.
Notes on some of the pictures. The larger buildings are the school - it is extremely neat here, and they are proud of their sanitation and water systems. The clearing around the school was also great for birding. The pattern in the sand may come from leaves that were on the beach, or from something else - I don't know, but found it beautiful and unexpected. The two little boys were playing with the piece of Styrofoam, using it as a boat, a kickboard, and in general having a great time. Even at a very young age the kids are naturals in the water.
Tomorrow we return to Honiara around noon, and have a tour of WWII sites in the afternoon. We only walked around near the port the last time we were here, so this will get us out into the countryside a bit. The weather, which was sunny and hot today, is supposed to continue, so that should be good.
