Decorative Sunday

This Sunday we feature woodcuts, photogravure, and specimens from legendary American papermaker Dard Hunter’s A Papermaking Pilgrimage to Japan, Korea and China, published in 1936 in New York by Pynson Printers in a limited edition of 350. Each edition is signed by Hunter and the founder of Pynson Printers, typographer and book designer Elmer Adler. The woodcuts were cut by J. J. Lankes and the photogravure plates were printed by Photogravure & Color Co. of New York. The book was bound by master binder Gerhard Gerlach, a student of lauded German bookbinder Ignatz Wiemeler. The book includes original specimens collected by Hunter.

The first photogravure above (image #2), the frontispience for the book, is a kakemono by an unknown Japanese artist memorializing “Three Gods of Papermaking.” Depicted are Cai Lun, traditionally attributed as the Chinese inventor of paper in the early second century and Damjing (Donchō in Japan), the Korean Buddhist monk that is often credited with introducing paper to Japan in 610. They are shown alongside Seibei Mochizuki, who in 1572 brought papermaking to Nishijima, a mountainous region of Yamanashi Prefecture.

This book is the generous gift of the trusts of Hazel O. Metzner and Delia G. Ovitz, local sisters who worked as Librarians at UWM’s predecessor institution, the Milwaukee State Normal School.

It's been a while since I did a watch countdown - so here's a new one!

From the deep vacuum of space to the harsh cold of the lunar surface - these are 10 space watches for any collector.

At #10 the G Gerlach Kosmonauta.

This is a reissue of the watch worn by the first and only Polish Kosmonaut, General Miroslaw Hermaszewski.

For his trip on Soyuz 30 in 1978, Hermaszewski was fitted with the very first Polish digital watch - a cutting-edge Unitra Warel LED. It was made in Poland and used components developed in conjunction with Japanese tech company Sanyo.

The Kosmonauta is a modern take on this watch. It's a reasonably-sized 40mm watch that features a sapphire crystal, and 100-meters of water-resistance. It has two manually-activated functions on the 2 o’clock pusher: press once for time, twice for date. Time-setting is also the same as the original and runs through the recessed crown at 4. G. Gerlach uses its own LED Module-001GG movement and it features a 2-year battery life.

Overall it's a great little slice of 70's culture and a unique space watch reissue that's hard to pass up.

Gerlach make a collection of watches that cover almost every modern era in look and feel, commonly using modern Seiko automatics or mech-quartz movements. There’s 1970’s divers, there’s vintage pilot style watches, and even ones that attempt the dual-crown compressor case look. Here, we have a fantastic love-letter to the early days of aviation. Let me explain…

In 1918, Poland broke free from almost a hundred years of partition, having been divided up among the Russians, Germans, and Austria-Hungary. It emerged as an independent country. There’s a lot of things that a scrappy young nation needs to do to survive, especially emulating the trappings of other countries: immigration, citizenship, defense, budget, debt, economy.

In 1918, the world was fresh out of The Great War, the war to end all wars (before the next one), and the landscape of Europe was quite literally scarred with the gashes of trench warfare cut through fields, stained with the blood of the youth. This war was fought not just with guns and the impersonal nature of a modern air war, but in man to man combat, with close arms. It was a brutal, gory war.

It was the first war that tanks took part in. They were big, lumbering things, that were vulnerable from the top side – and the solution was to put a net on the top surface to catch any hand grenades that were lobbed up there and allow them to roll off the back of the tank.

It was also the first war fought with airplanes. Today, we think of airplanes as impersonal – they move fast enough and have far enough weapons range that you don’t see the face of your enemy. Back then, in a dogfight, you very likely could.

Remember, airplanes were still new. The first flight was in 1903, and here we were, as little as 11 years later, using them with bombs and machine guns aboard. From a small field outside of Dayton, Ohio, to the European theatre, changes happened fast. 1912, the first machine gun fired from an airplane. 1913 saw the first enclosed fuselage. 1915, the first use of ailerons instead of wing warping.

In Poland, Central Aviation Works was founded as the state-owned aviation company in December of 1918. By 1921, a second factory was added, and in ’28, the Central Aviation Works was reorganized into the Państwowe Zakłady Lotnicze (State Aviation Works) in Warsaw.

PZL started making bombers in the early 30s: the P23 Karaś was a classic light bomber plane, as was the The PZL.37 Łoś, a twin-engine medium bomber.

The P23 was presented at Paris Air Show 1936 and gained attention. More then 50 P23 were exported to Bulgaria.

The plane became a victim of rapid advance of the airplane technology, and became obsolete when WWII started. Still, the fact that Poland became a country again only in 1918 and was able to create it and produce over 250pcs over a relative short period of 1937-1939 is pretty amazing.

Over time, it was fitted with more powerful engines. During the Invasion of Poland (1939) it remained Poland’s primary light bomber and reconnaissance aircraft. PZL P23 Karaś gained the distinction of being the first airplane that bombed German Third Reich – September 2nd 1939, a single plane dropped a bomb on factory at Ohlau.

Remaining airplanes served for the whole war in Bulgaria and Romania, only to be removed from service in 1946. No planes remain today.So how is this about wristwatches? Gerlach (remember Gerlach? It’s a post about Gerlach.) has made a classic pilot-styled chronograph that doesn’t feel out of place alongside the 100+ year history of human flight.

Housed in a 43 mm case, Gerlach kept the vibes of the pioneering aviation years using a coin edge bezel. WR100M makes it a fully secure for a harsh, daily usage. A hand-wound ST1901 movement adds some old-fasioned taste. The watch comes delivered with a military styled, solid leather strap. The P23 is available now for PLN2049/$530 USD, from gerlach.org.pl
