Devout ice skating fans might recognize Algirde Pipikaite as a former Lithuanian champion skater, but over the last 15 years, she’s also distinguished herself in cybersecurity, summoning legal, technical and business knowledge combined with prudent and pragmatic risk-taking to tackle complex issues and influence the advancement of cybersecurity in both the private and the public sectors. 
Perhaps it is her fluency in chess – she’s a champion in that as well – that makes Pipikaite a successful and respected strategist in the security sector. As project lead of governance and policy at the Centre for Cybersecurity at the World Economic Forum, Pipikaite works closely with investors – bringing together leaders from the likes of S&P Global and Moody’s – to tease out new market incentives that will help make security a priority in technological innovation. By pushing for security to be backed into software, resulting in less vulnerable offerings, Pipikaite strives to shrink the cyberspace attack surface.
She came to the World Economic Forum from CyberSponse, Inc., where she was the vice president of information risk. Her journey to cybersecurity started with work on a variety of international development and security projects that included the launch of a community-driven group for incident responders.

Rosa Smothers senior VP, cyber operations, KnowBe4
As a cyber threat analyst who supported cyber operations in the Central Intelligence Agency for more than a decade and a veteran of the Iraq war, Rosa Smothers has built up a portfolio of skills and experience – much of which can’t be disclosed for national security reasons, though one supporter said her CIA work qualified her as “an all-out badass” – that make her an influential player in the cybersecurity industry.
At KnowBe4, where she’s senior vice president of cyber operations, Smothers conducts internal investigations that bring her research and forensics experience to bear – and showcases her ability to work with external subject matter experts in coordinated efforts to determine attack attribution.
Her extensive research into FedRAMP and contract-specific work shaped KnowBe4’s plan to become the first, and what is currently the only, security and awareness training platform in the FedRAMP marketplace. Exemplary of her influence is her work with two lobbying firms in Washington to help boost federal cybersecurity legislation.
Smothers puts in considerable time with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to develop cybersecurity working groups and caucuses aimed at tackling cybersecurity issues and has provided input to various committees across different industries that touch on cybersecurity. Her efforts have paid off and she’s lauded for increasing lawmakers’ understanding of the importance of security awareness training and simulated phishing to help mitigate cyber threats.
She is generous with her time in helping women understand their value and improve their status within the cybersecurity industry and cultivating the tools and confidence for them to develop persuasive and assertive skills. She has mentored countless women and was tapped as a designated mentor during her tenure at the CIA. Smothers also is a member of Women in Defense, aimed

How a Rebellious Streak Can Help You Excel in the Workplace

What do people like Harry Houdini, Napoleon Bonaparte, the movie director Ava DuVernay, and the famous pilot Chesley Sullenberger have in common?
No, the answer is not “really cool names.” As Harvard Business School professor Francesca Gino shows in her new book, “Rebel Talent: Why It Pays to Break the Rules at Work and in Life,” those people achieved success in large part because of their willingness to break the mold. As Gino puts it, they are “deviants, but in a positive and constructive way.” She admiringly calls such people rebels, and she has spent a large part of her career as a social scientist showing how we can positively transform our working lives if we learn from their examples.
While Gino naturally devotes a lot of attention to the high-level strategies of CEOs, at its core, the book is about how to be a better employee.
I took away five main lessons from “Rebel Talent” that can help the average worker become more effective, and happier, in the workplace.
Be Authentic
Most of us are motivated to present the most idealized version of ourselves to others at all times. We want our employers to think of us as being good at everything and willing to take on any task. Or, if we’re job hunting, we want potential employers to know that we were always highly successful in our previous roles. This sort of thinking makes a lot of intuitive sense.
“Rebel Talent” encourages you to challenge those notions. Gino shows that we’re better off when we’re true to ourselves, even if that means admitting to mistakes and failures.
One fascinating way she illustrates this point is by writing about a study she designed involving an “elevator pitch” contest. In this Shark Tank-style competition, business school students were competing in front of judges to see who had the best startup idea.
After making their pitches, Gino had the entrepreneurs fill out a survey that aimed to find out how authentic they were. It asked things like “to what extent do you feel you were being genuine during the pitch?”
Those who felt they were being their true selves while making their pitch were three times as likely to make it to the final round. Similarly, those who admitted in their pitches to having made mistakes in the past also had a much higher likelihood of advancing in the competition. The judges valued honesty and authenticity, even though such behavior can make us feel vulnerable.
In my experience, this makes a ton of sense. When people try to sell me something at my job, I can tell almost immediately whether they actually care about what they’re selling or not. And I’m much more likely to do business with those who are genuine about it.
Remember That Everyone Struggles
We live in a culture that emphasizes how great our most prominent business leaders are. People like Mark Zuckerberg, Jeff Bezos, and Elon Musk are often described with words like “genius” and “prodigy.” According to Gino, it can be easy to forget that they all made tons of mistakes along the way. When we understand that people who have more experience than us are fallible, it can have tremendous benefits.
Gino points to a study that found firefighters got a boost to their performance after reading case studies about experienced firefighters who committed errors on the job.
Similarly, Gino analyzed hospital data over a 10-year period, and found that heart surgeons who were committed to learning from the mistakes of other doctors had significantly better patient outcomes.
I find that it’s easy to notice all of my own shortcomings, but a lot harder to recognize that highly successful people I admire make just as many mistakes. Gino emphasizes that we need to make ourselves aware of all the ways that others have failed so that we’ll have the courage and tenacity to push through tough times when they arise. Doing so goes against the grain, but it pays off.
Play to Your Strengths
We’re often told that we should focus on improving our weaknesses at our jobs. For instance, if you’re great at doing research but weak at giving presentations to a team, you might be advised to work on your public speaking abilities.
Gino flips this thinking on its head. In her research, she writes, “One predictor of job performance stood out above all others: playing to strengths.”
Rather than working on our weaknesses, we should focus on using our strengths as much as possible. Doing so makes us happier, for one thing. Gino notes that “people who use their strengths daily are six times more likely to get satisfaction out of their job and report less stress and anxiety.”
Furthermore, research has shown that when managers focus on nurturing an employee’s strengths as opposed to working on their weaknesses, their performance improves by 63%.
Amazingly, playing to your strengths helps us even if all we do is think about what we’re good at. In one study, a select group of new employees at a large IT company were instructed to spend 30 minutes thinking about their strengths on their first day. In a follow-up seven months later, those people reported being more committed to their jobs, and were performing at higher levels, than those who didn’t spend the initial 30 minutes focusing on their best abilities.
This was the single most tangible takeaway from the book, from my perspective. I’ve always thought that I should be working as hard as I can to improve in my weaker areas. While that’s not a bad thing, it’s also not optimal. There are people at my company who are good at things I’m bad at, so why not let them handle that stuff? From now on, I’m going to do a better job of being even better in the areas where I already excel.
Be Curious
Gino has found in her research that “curious people often end up being star performers in their organizations.” She lays out a few different reasons as to why this is the case.
For one thing, curious people are more likely to learn new information by reaching out to their colleagues. Not every employee gets the best training, so those who are willing to ask questions and seek help tend to rise through the ranks.
Curious employees are also more likely to be happy at work, even when they’re doing seemingly mundane jobs. A study of workers in a call center showed that those who were curious saw the job less as an assembly line and more as a puzzle to be solved. This change of mindset, so subtle yet so powerful, was a fantastic predictor of who would become the highest performers. It’s a switch we can all make with a little effort.
When Gino surveyed over 3,000 employees from different industries about the power of curiosity, the results were striking. Nine out of 10 respondents (92%) “credited curious people with bringing new ideas into teams and viewed curiosity as a catalyst to job satisfaction innovation, and high performance.”
Even though some of us might be less curious by nature, “Rebel Talent” shows that fostering what curiosity you do have can have a huge payoff.
But: Use Common Sense
My only gripe with “Rebel Talent” is that instead of offering nudges or baby steps, the overall theme is that you should jump into rebelliousness head first. I can almost hear professor Gino in my head as I walk around my office: “Take chances! Tell your boss what’s really on your mind! Come on, Drew, be a rebel!”
While she has proven it can be very effective to adopt a rebel mindset, I think Gino glosses over the downsides to rebelliousness. Every workplace has its own unique dynamics, and not every employee is in a position to challenge the existing way of doing things. When Gino says things like “breaking rules enriches every aspect of our lives,” I feel the need to throw in some caveats.
For many of us, it would be bad form to start asking a bunch of pointed questions during our next conference call, or to challenge our boss repeatedly during our next one-on-one meeting. Asking too many questions can make you come across as needy, a show-off, or an annoyance. I’ve seen it happen.
It’s great to have a rebel spirit, but make sure your timing is right.
Summing Up
If you’ve been waiting for a sign that you should be more assertive and confident in the workplace, this is the book for you. Gino does a great job of showing how people who are willing to blaze their own trail tend to be happier and more productive employees. If you’re authentic, curious, willing to learn from your mishaps, and focused on what you’re good at, your career should be far more rewarding.
Just remember that you exist in the real world, not inside of a social science study, so common sense should always rule .

Eli Manning Helped Matt Luke find New Ole Miss O-line Coach
One of the first objectives for Ole Miss interim coach Matt Luke was finding a new offensive line coach. Luke, who had been the offensive line coach before moving into the interim role, didn’t have to look far for help, receiving a tip from a familiar name around the Ole Miss family.
New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning reached out to Luke and suggested Jack Bicknell Jr., who was hired last week. Ole Miss Spirit reported that Manning heaped praise on Bicknell, a former Giants assistant.
Bicknell also has worked as an NFL assistant for Pittsburgh, Kansas City and Miami. He was an assistant at Boston College, his alma mater, and served as head coach at Louisiana Tech from 1999-2006.
“We were fortunate to get a coach of that caliber this late in the ballgame,” Luke said Wednesday during his pre-camp news conference.

Ole Miss Coach Matt Luke Wants To Put The Focus Back On Rebels’ Players

It has been a tumultuous offseason for the Ole Miss Rebels, to say the least.
From the surprise scandal and subsequent resignation of coach Hugh Freeze to the lawsuit from former coach Houston Nutt, there have been plenty of negative headlines off the field in Oxford.
Now that the 2017 season is only a month away, though, interim coach Matt Luke wants to make sure the focus is put back on the Rebels’ players, telling ESPN’s Paul Finebaum that it’s time for his players to show what they can do on the field.

Ole Miss Student-Athletes Participate in Training Program
This summer, several Ole Miss student-athletes got the chance to earn real world experience by participating in the Ole Miss Athletics “Training Program”, which paired student- athletes with local businesses in their desired fields to gain invaluable hands-on experience.
The Ole Miss Athletics Training Program was designed to operate concurrently with the University of Mississippi summer school course schedule. Each student-athlete selected for the program met outlined eligibility requirements to be considered for the training program and were required to spend 20 hours a week at their training site. Additionally, participants attended a weekly professional development meeting and were required to complete a presentation on their experience.
The goals of The Training Program are to provide opportunities for student-athletes to engage in high impact practices and professional development opportunities while enrolled at the University of Mississippi and also to foster positive working relationships with local companies in the Lafayette, Oxford and University communities. At the end of the program student-athletes had a better understanding of customs and practices in the professional environment, participated as a team in a professional environment, applied knowledge obtained while in the professional environment to a task and acquired on-site training that can be applied to future potential employment.
“It has been rewarding to see how our student-athletes have grown from this experiential learning opportunity,” said Jennifer Saxon, assistant athletics director for student-athlete development.
“Following their presentations, it was clear that they each have a better understanding of what is expected of professionals in their respective career fields. We believe that this is just the start of additional opportunities for our department and the ultimate success of our student-athletes post-graduation.”
Student-athletes participating in the program included: Javon Patterson (Football) – Data Analytics at Promatura Group LLC, Alex Schneider (Softball) – Marketing Department at Chick-fil-A, Caroline Adams (Volleyball) – Speech-Learning Pathology Department at Baptist Memorial Hospital, Jack Raborn (Football) – Economic Development Foundation/Oxford-Lafayette County Chamber of Commerce, Mercedes Mattix (Track and Field) – Nursing Department at North Mississippi Regional Center and Brady Feigl (Baseball) – Oxford-University Bank.
The student-athletes and their employers both gained valuable lessons and experiences throughout the program. Adams, a communications sciences and disorders major, had a great experience during her time at the Speech-Learning Pathology Department at Baptist Memorial Hospital.
“I was able to learn so much about Speech-Language Pathology and what a career as a speech-language pathologist looks like throughout the summer training program,” said Adams. “Working in an outpatient hospital setting, I got to observe therapy on a wide variety of individuals and was able to determine my specific area of interest. I am so thankful for Life Skills and Baptist Memorial Hospital as they provided me with such a valuable learning experience as an undergraduate!”
The student-athletes weren’t the only ones who saw the program as beneficial. Shelley Williams, vice president of communications & general counsel of the Promatura Group LLC, thought the program was equally rewarding from the employer standpoint.
“ProMatura was extremely fortunate to have been selected to be part of the Ole Miss Athletics Training Program,” said Williams. “The company benefited greatly from having a high-caliber student athlete like Javon Patterson join our Market Feasibility team. We’re hopeful that we can continue our relationship with the athletic department next summer as well.”
Patterson, who spent his time working with Williams at Promatura Group LLC, found the challenge of the training program rewarding.
“The month of July was interesting not knowing what you’re getting into,” said Patterson. “But as I dove into the work with expertise, things began to clear up and I began to have some fun. The Training Program is a great opportunity to further your experience in a field you’re interested in. I really enjoyed data analytics and want to pursue it after athletics.”

When GRIT Goes Wrong & What to Do Instead

As a researcher and instructor at elite universities in the US, I watch with interest each year as parents and their children celebrate students’ admission to big-name schools with single-digit acceptance rates. I can attest that Ivy League schools and their competitors offer truly excellent educations. But if I could offer one piece of advice to incoming freshman, it would be to learn to take care of themselves—because they are about to be surrounded by people who often have the misconception that racking up achievements and accolades is more important than leading a happy, healthy, and fulfilling life.
This skewed view of reality can do major damage to a young person, not just during their time in school, but further down the line. I understand the danger because I’ve gone down this rabbit hole myself.
When I first moved from France to the US to attend an Ivy League school at age 17, I was shocked by the way my fellow students worked. They weren’t just studying hard for class—they were serving as presidents of multiple on-campus organizations, doing community service, launching start-ups, and writing a book on the side. Nothing was ever enough.
Even when it came to working out, my classmates were on top of their game. Growing up in France, I hadn’t seen many people exercising; now I was surrounded by joggers. Of course, exercise is a wonderful thing (and Americans are way healthier than French people that way). Yet I couldn’t help but wonder: Where was everyone running to?
Soon enough, I got caught up in the overachiever culture: I would burn the candles at both ends, sleeping less, eating haphazardly, and leaving myself with little downtime. In return, people told me that I was “successful,” which of course gave me a high. So I kept going—and that’s when my health started to break down. I developed anxiety, and I stopped being able to sleep. Soon I realized that this was happening to many of my friends as well. Yet elite university cultures, as well as high-pressure workplaces, often reward us for pushing ourselves past our limits.
I later learned that the quality I was observing was a form of grit: The ability to keep going, no matter what, in the name of achievement. But we had not understood how to apply it properly. Angela Duckworth, a professor of psychology at the University of Pennsylvania, wrote thebest-selling book on Grit and has conducted groundbreaking research on the topic. Grit is a phenomenal predictor of professional success (pdf) and an often-admirable quality to boot. Whether you’re a corporate employee facing a big deadline, a Marine struggling through strenuous training and deployments, or a stay-at-home mom persevering after yet another sleepless night, grit is your friend, your ally, your strength.
As Duckworth herself has observed, the real lesson of grit is the importance of working hard at a sustainable pace, without any expectation of immediate payoff. Yet often, students in highly competitive environments miss this message, viewing any grade less than an A as absolutely devastating. As the problems of persistent stress and anxiety in such schools shows, it is possible to push yourself too much.
But as I found while researching my book The Happiness Track, all of the traits that people need to be successful are dependent upon learning self-care. For example, creativity is the number-one attribute that CEOs look for in employees. And yet creativity cannot come from a mind that is stressed and overworked. Creativity does not emerge when you’re sitting at your computer for 12 hours a day. Creativity emerges when the mind is at rest, daydreaming, or spacing out.
Similarly, when we overextend ourselves—skipping lunch, racing from meeting to meeting, and relying on endless cups of coffee to stay awake writing a presentation deep into the night—we break our bodies down, day by day. Stress impacts both our physical health, including our immune function, and our attention and memory—all vital functions for a successful career. Ironically, the more we push ourselves, the quicker we burn out, and the less we can achieve over time.
Should we encourage our children to work hard? Absolutely. But young people need to learn that grit is only effective when coupled with restorative activities like sufficient sleep, exercise, a well-balanced diet, meditation, walks in nature, and time off. Research shows that these basic yet essential self-care habits result in greater focus and productivity, not to mention increased creativity, better decision-making, and stronger emotional intelligence.
Today, programs like Yale’s Emotional Intelligence Project are working to help students understand that success doesn’t have to come at the price of their health and happiness. Sometimes, self-compassion means choosing to cut back on extracurriculars or drop a class. Accepting your limits is an essential part of grit—and so is knowing that, no matter what your fellow high-achieving students might think, getting a B on a test is not the end of the world.
I wrote The Happiness Track to show hard-working and burned out students and professionals what the data really says: If you take care of yourself, you will do better, think more clearly, make better decisions and be more emotionally intelligent. You will attain your full potential – without the burnout.
